Sony's long-rumored, rarely officially talked about video download service is coming to PlayStation 3s this summer, according to a report from the LA Times. Hints that Sony would be capitalizing on the Sony Pictures and Sony Home Entertainment library have been tossed about by the Financial Times and Wall Street Journal with Peter Dille—SVP of marketing for SCEA—dropping semi-official word on the unnamed service on the official PlayStation.blog last week.
Details are still incredibly scarce on the movie and television download service that was shown to publishers earlier this year at Destination PlayStation, but Dille teases that Sony will "be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you've seen or used." The LA Times sources anonymous film execs who say that video downloads could... yes, could be transmitting via PlayStation 3 connections this summer.
Clear some space on your calendars, folks!
Sony to launch online video service for PlayStation 3 [LA Times]

Meh....
I can get digital movies from Amazon, netflix, comcast, torrent sites, my 360, etc....
I still rather just take little drive to local blockbuster and pick up a movie if I need to see something. Really with they spent more time working on game related content rather than a video service.
Seinfeld? I'm sold.
Its the only logical thing to do, that I am surprised it took so long.
I wonder if they will take the "buy" instead of "rental" service route. As much as its nice to have the feature, I don't think I will ever use the XBLM to purchase movies. And saying TV shows ain't reached canada yet, doubt I ever will.
If they SOLD the movie in HD, even if it was 2/3 the Bluray price, I would most likely buy...
@Kyle81:
thx friendly troll...
I really don't like when people dance around their comments. Stop saying "others you've seen or used" and just come out and say Xbox Live.
Can't wait.
@steliosco: Care to discuss something I said in specific or just going to call people out for no reason?
Come on, lets talk digital distribution if you feel so offended by someone not caring for the idea.
Will they have a half decent library and a subscription system as opposed to the Xbox's iffy library and non subscription rental scheme (I know Im dreaming when I even hope that this could happen :( )? If not then I will just keep waiting for Netflix to put in there own download system via disk. :D
I'm really happy that this is finally happening. I hope they offer things at competitive rates rather then trying to achieve parity with XBox Video Marketplace. There seriously needs to be competition in this market space. Part of me still wonders if their is price fixing going on from the content providers because when Apple TV download service was announced, it didn't seem much different from Microsoft.
I wish they partnered with Netflix or Blockbuster instead. That would get the mainstream consumer's attention more than releasing a standalone video store.
Considering how much space I have to use on my PS3 HD just to install games, I doubt I'll be wasting space on it for movies.
@PaulHunter: microsoft is hardly the only company offering video downloads... there's itunes, xbox live, netflix...
@Scazza: The whole digital rent thing always bugs me. I used it with Amazon a couple times and it just kinda sucked, as they put strict time limit on when you can watch something. Physical rentals at least usually allow you to hold on to the media till you have had enough time to go through it.
@Kyle81:
you do not care about dd,but indeed you stated you prefer your movies from a handful of places of dd including your 360 and "torrentz".If you don't want to use a Sony service,because everyone will offer dd it seems,then state a serious reason for a service that isn't out yes except from the "there are others that i use and is sony... :|
I love how out of nowhere -- LA Times -- reports on the gaming news before a gaming site.
@okenny :):
Well,if you can actually keep your download and upload to your psp,I think that should be satisfactory.I know I would like something like that.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: It's not like Netflix hasn't been trying and it's still not a uncertainity.
About franking time.
@Kyle81: Remember rule 13 of the Internet. Just ignore it :P

@Al2x:
I sent this over this morning and Nextgen biz had picked it up from the LA times. I think they probably get sick of me sending Sony stuff through the tip line.;)
@Kyle81: LOL, you should know by now that if it hurts (someone) deep down inside, the first reaction human beings have is that a troll did it. It's just like in the witch hunting days or during the Dark Ages. Those were bad times and people didn't live so well so it's no surprise things were blamed on mythical creatures. This tradition is just being kept alive on blog comment sections to honor history.
So next time someone calls you a troll for stating your opinion, don't feel bad, just know you done your part to uphold a historical tradition.
You're doing gods work :)
Can't be a bad thing.
it will never come to Australia
This is awesome. I don't care what you say but the mere fact they are hand-picking the Sony Pictures and Sony Home Entertainment library is going to kick ass.
@Kyle81: good call on the torrent sites... PIRATE!
@enewtabie: Actually I was under the impression it is like a Netflix or XBL type service. Am I confused here? :\ *reads story for the third time*
@N15PCA: I think you mean "fucking" not "franking"
@okenny :): Heh, you earned your star on that one!
@Rockwallaby: we... you could technically use them interchangeably depending on context ;)
@okenny :):
I think it'll be a lot like Amazon Unbox. With unbox, there's the ability to take your rental portable to an MP3 player, or TIVO. You can also purchase the movie.
With Sony's service you can rent a video and watch it either on your TV, on your PSP, or on your computer.
@NitrousO: don't ignore them. THOSE ARE HOLY!!! THEY ARE THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF THE INTERNET.
I've never rented anything from Microsoft's service, but I'm interested if it includes a subscription model. More so if it's in partnership with one of the major rental services and/or I can transfer copies to PSP.
Can't imagine how long it would take to download a HD or near HD film considering how long it takes for new firmware.
@okenny :):
I think the being different that what you've used before is the key.You'll be able to transfer to PSP,etc.I'm just trying to figure out when this is going to get squeezed in.Summer through Fall is going to be rough.In between the 2.4 and Home release..I dunno about that.
For not having cable and being a YouTube addict, and watching all my favorite shows on the internet instead of TV, THIS is something I have been anticipating and to include all of the Sony Home Entertainment is just too much for words. Couch Potato Level Up!
I would think if they want to steal some thunder offering a free ad supported service in a similar vein to www.hulu.com would totally blow away the 360 (or at least until MS caught up). Also add an ability to tag and download shows/movies while idle or in standby, for Tivo like experience.
On top of the free service you can also offer a regular subscription, rental or buy store for more recent and perhaps HD content.
So glad I started pricing bigger hard drives today.
Awesome, can't wait. I hope it comes out early summer rather than late summer.
I downloaded about 6 movies on the 360, just for the hell of it, but I prefer downloading the TV shows because those are not rentals.
I'm curious to see how PSN will handle it.
I'll buy that for a dollar.
But not more.
The problem with this, as i see it, is that they probably won't put full-HD content on the video store in order to avoid cannibalizing their blu-ray markets (also because that would require massive storage and bandwidth).
@underscore: Not true: Sony released a study that the consumer will be downloading 90% of all media by 2018. They, like always, stick their foot into the future first.
@MushroomSquid: Excuse me, wow: I meant we will be buy 90% of all games online by 2018, so, I got little ahead of myself.
@underscore:
Whether they sell it on a download or BDR does it really matter as long as "they" are getting a cut. They certainly aren't fighting a format war on that front anymore.
An attractive media service could push a lot more people over to the PS3 than the 360. I guess the question is, is Sony going to aggressively push such a service or is it just adding to a feature list?
I like, but I use Netflix, BUT if they somehow made a partnership, and included Netflix in this service, I'll be in.
This is much different than other services because Sony will reap huge rewards. They get to completely bypass Sony's studio costs to distribute the movies. That right there is a plus.
@mescalineeyes: Nah, just watch the Seinfeld re-runs. No need to buy it :P
But yeah, I can't wait for this. I wonder how it will impact the sales of Blu-Ray.
DivX coming to a PSP near you.
"Unlike closed networks such as Apple's, Sony plans to embrace open standards that would make its offering compatible with a range of computers and hand-held devices, including its PlayStation Portable."
I'm not a fan of offering movies or TV shows to download (they're very visibly compressed, and they take forever to download) but if I can download something that I can watch in more than one place... well, now my interest is piqued.
@Kyle81:
conservative, I feel the same about digital distribution.
I know it's been said that digital downloads are the way of the future but I don't think I'll ever accept it.
@steliosco: Sounded more like he was listi
