Thank goodness that the Kojima Productions team opted for a public beta test of Metal Gear Online. They've almost assuredly learned plenty from the influx of traffic from new-gen Metal Gear hungry gamers, resulting in a non-playable clusterfuck of an MGO beta. After delaying the beta to an unspecified date, the Konami folks now have their collective eyes on Friday April 25. We think it's just one minute after 11:59 PM PDT, but you can never be too sure. Keep the whole day open.
Or don't! The official Metal Gear Online news page stresses that the beta launch "may change due to unforseen [sic] circumstances." There is a tiny glimmer of good news, as the beta has been pushed on the back end, closing on May 11, instead of the fifth, as previously planned. So... Friday it is. Commence breath holding!

Comments
You mean May 11th?
@jondy1703: Nope, it closes in the past! You've Created a Time Paradox!!
I was up at midnight last night waiting for the beta. Now I'll be up at midnight on Thursday waiting for the beta...
Thanks Konami!
Nice to see it ends before it starts :)
Another error another day for Mike :p
This is great and bad. I'm happy that i might be able to play on Friday but at the same time if they push it back I'm going to be very mad. I just wish they added an extra week above the already two weeks.
If this happens during the launch of MGS4 i'm going to be a mad person. I'll have mGS4 to back track on but still i want to get my game on online with other people.
@jondy1703: Well, in all fairness considered how the beta has gone so far, maybe he does mean April 11th...
Well, I'm hoping for a close re-launch in Europe. I also think that they should really have made this thing private. For example, just allowing people who pre-ordered would have helped, like it's handled in the US. Or, make it available only to the UK. Or, just to males. Or, just to me. No wait, that won't work - unless I can stand playing against Kojima all day long :D
@Gon: Same here. It was a let down. But it's a beta, so I won't call Konami any names. Just, that, they're disappointing at the moment.
@Surlaw-the-Mai: *Pime Taradox
So the beta goes back in time and closes on the 11th of April?
Interesting!
I'm waiting on a call from EB Games about when more Beta Keys will be in so I can pick up mine, but if it's Friday I won't be able to play till Sunday night anyway.
My other favoroite thing about this whole MGO SNAFU is that when you launch the beta code from your PS3 it tells you that you need to update the software to version 1.1, but then fails to update properly and crashes out of the program.
I really hope Konami gets all of this sorted out by June and that these problem are all just related to the beta and not the final product.
mine's still awaiting to get it updated to 1.1 as well...
no peers to download from and server download doesn't work...
hopefully it gets fixed the time beta starts....
No, NEXT April 11th
not in the past, silly
First it took me 8 hours to download the client. Then it took 12 hours for the update to hit 87% at which point it crashed.
then it took another 2 days to get the update...then I find out I need to get the Konami ID.
It took 3 days for the website to start working and I finally get it done and I think im home free...
I enter my info into the game and im presented with a connection error only to find the beta has been delayed till friday.
Honestly this is by far the most botched beta I have ever been a part of.
Yes yes i know, its just a beta but they have so utterly failed its not even funny. I always expect brief hiccups, maybe some slow loading or connection issues but this is crazy. everything that could break has and we havent even hit gameplay yet!
what happens when I actually get into the game and get in a match? Will my ps3 explode? Will my ps3 send a surge through the hdmi cable and explode my tv?
My buying this game depends 100% on this beta. I've never been a MGS fan but im always willing to give it a try. Lets get the act together Konami.
Dear Konami: Now is a good time to plan on much more traffic and server activity than you can imagine.
I'm lacking in mgo info because I wasnt aware they had shields. LOL I loved using the shield on cs. Idk why people hate on the shield so much.
Friday it is. I just hope Konami gets it together by Friday or else everyone is going to retreat into their cardboard boxes and weep.
For the inevitable Beta apologists, keep in mind that Konami requires that you fork over hard cash to participate... meaning every beta player in the U.S. is already a paying customer.
@parad0x360: Dood, trust me consider yourself extremely in a very awesome shape despite of these unfortunate events.
My PS3 is broken this week, and it normally takes 2-3 weeks for the repair itself.
@Highlander Wolf: Are you putting Konami's imagination into quetion!?
Jk
Don't worry if the update crashes, when it resumes it starts at the point it left off.
Also, I found it was going too slow, so I changed the port numbers it was using for the bittorrent, and that speeded it up considerably.
@hypermog: No you don't. You only have to preorder the game to get a beta code. The money for the preorder goes towards the purchase price of the game. The beta is merely a free bonus for those who preorder.
Also this is a beta test. The whole point is test the game before release. This is NOT some exclusive demo, this is a beta. It's meant to flesh out these types of problems. It sucks for those wanting to get in, but at the same time it's good cause it's doing exactly what a beta is intended for, and thats to find the bugs.
Like a (few) said above, it's a beta, so, i'll let it slide. I stayed up, but, I know these things happen, so, I'm not mad. I had to deal with the 9 digit key, as well as the nightmare of signing up for an ID, but, again, these things happen, and as long as it DOESN'T happen when the game LAUNCHES, I won't have a problem with it. I mean, this IS a beta isn't it?
Konami set it up so that participants in their "free" beta MUST pay, in the U.S.
Yes, ***planned*** indeed. Let's hope it goes smoother.
@hypermog: @hypermog: What? I preordered a game I've been planning to buy for 4 years. I didn't pay anything extra. Anyone that wants to participate in the MGO beta is going to buy MGS4 anyway.
@hypermog: Except logic dictates that you're spending money you were already going to spend on June 12. A lot of us already had pre-orders.
@hypermog: And what is the cost of the beta in the US? Thats right, there is no cost. It's a preorder bonus, that comes with a really nice bonus dvd of MGS videos as well.
Heck if it bugs you so much, you could also you know, cancel your preorder, and the store gives you your 5 bucks back.
@Kyle81: On top of that, everybody in the US had a chance to get a free key anyways, using the Playstation Blog site. If you were THAT upset about "buying" a beta, you could have gotten one for free.
teabaggings will begin friday. to all other MGO players: JUST BRING IT!!!
This whole thing is so janky. I wish I was playing right now.
@Grimmjow Jeagerjaques: indeed! :D bringing it, i shall!
At least it gives me a chance to catch up and finish my homework before I start playing. I was getting scared I might not have time for homework this week :p
there still handing out keys, i just got one on the beta website for nothing, just made my KONAMI ID and GAME ID, (like the PSN ID isnt enough?) and the client is downloading painfully slow....
Friday it is then.
Knowing my luck, that means Saturday...
@hypermog: You really don't have a clue what you are commenting on right?
I'm in the Beta. I'm in the US. I've paid nothing to get the Beta key. STFU.
Friday, which is better than it starting on a Sunday night/Monday
im curious though, i wish they would at least let us see the controls so we can get ready.
@hypermog: Actually, you dropped a $5 deposit on MGS4. The beta/MGSaga disc is a freebie.
@zanzibarlegend: You can, click on online manual.
@kspraydad4: Congrats, you're the exception, not the rule.
@zanzibarlegend: There is an online manual for MGO which covers the game play and it's controls.
How old are these people who complain about staying up until midnight? I've got class from 9 to 6:40 and I stay up later than midnight for non-earthshattering events like playing TF2.
I know this is a beta, and I know I'm not really entitled to any MGO gameplay at all, but.. I planned my entire day around playing it yesterday. :(
Oh well. At least it'll start on a weekend and not during time I have school. Plus, this is the beta. Better get it over now than have it carry over to the final copy of the game and have to worry about it later with millions of people complaining. I just hope that this Konami ID was only for the beta to collect information about testers.
I still can't download the update patch ... hopefully, they'll get that fixed, too.
@Draco Basileus: that's the whole point of doing a beta.
I guess the Playstation Blog has also postponed Metal Gear Mondays?
@hypermog: kinda, except it's money i was already gonna spend anyway.
and uh, it was five dollars. surely the shitty dvd was worth that?
i thought it was open in europe anyway...
P2P downloading worked great for me for the update.. took about 45 minutes (or less, I walked away for a while).
The worst part really is getting the Konami ID set up...
The effort it took to get registered, the email confirmed and to finally get the 1.01 download.
What a tremendous waste of time.
This nonsense coming out only four days away from GTA IV coming out assures that I'll not be participating in the Beta on principle alone.
Kojima and Konami need to stick to the single player experience.
@EndersGame: I've actually got to agree. The Konami ID idea was almost as bad as Nintendo's Friend Codes, except the only reason I signed up for it (eventually, once I could actually get through), was just to try to play the beta for ONE game. And yes, like EndersGame said, it's just days before GTA4.
I love you Konami, but damn, what a way to screw things up.
@EndersGame:
Or perhaps that's exactly why they are doing a beta. People complaining about beta not working need to get in touch with reality, that's the goal. Fix it.
If you don't like it, don't play the beta. They work out the problems now so when you do pay for their product there are few to none.
Complaining about your chance to play what could be an excellent game for free and early is pretty petty.
@Gon: You'll be waiting awhile, then, if you stay up on Thursday night.. 2400 PDT on 04/25 is 0000 PDT on 04/26... Friday night to Saturday morning.
This is the best thing ever to happen to my academic career. thank you, konami.
@hypermog: You paid for MGS4 not the beta
Well now the executive (which's name I do not recall) that threatened the exclusivity of MGS because of the poor demand that the game would have can shove his doubts up his arse.
In your face whateveryourFkingnameis-san!
@Rockwallaby: I can't wait for the june 12th for these kids to go and actually buy MGS4 and realizing they paid 5 dollars less for it due to their pre-order and going "shit, I wish I could go and edit all my comments on kotaku about paying for the beta. now I'm forever stuck looking like a fool. A FOOL!"
@rochec: Rampant speculation on just how excellent a game is before you've even played it.
People like YOU are still playing Hellgate: London while having their heads stuck in the sand.
Beta is all about being nearly complete. Just a few minor tweaks and adjustments. The launch is less than six weeks away and they can't even roll out a straight forward registration process.
It's like they're stuck in the 1990s.
There are definitely things that can and should be overlooked during a Beta. Turning the registration process into a complete clusterfuck and blowing the launch of their Beta by a week...that's not something to be overlooked. That's a red fuckin' flag.
Being in Beta means the soup is almost done cooking and is ready to be served. Just a few seasonings that need to be added or maybe a vegetable here or there.
It's not supposed to be...
"Uh...Konami? There's a severed cat head in my soup."
and I suppose your brilliant response is;
"Relax. QQ nub-sauce. It's fine. It's Beta."
@EndersGame:
I guess you had some trouble reading my post. I never said it was a great game. I said those of us lucky enough to get into beta have a chance to play what might be a great game before it's released. That is a perk, not a burden. If you don't want to help them and find some bugs then don't waste their time eith
