Castlevania Judgment Coming...Sometime

dreadjudge.jpgSpotted in the US Patent and Trademark database, Castlevania Judgment will probably be among the next Castlevania games we see. While its platform was unspecified, given that Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia was recently leaked as the next DS title, we're assuming this game will be for one of the other various platforms. Any guesses? Oh, who are we kidding, we don't care what platform you think it's on. We're sticking with our "Eye of Judgment" expansion theory. We're also going to keep wearing this tin foil on our head...just in case.

Place judgment on another Castlevania trademark

I hope it's on the consoles. Last one we had was Curse of Darkness. I'm hoping for a PS3/360 title.

  • Stop. Please stop making Castlevania games. Please.

It's one of my favorite series' but I'm so unbelievably sequel fatigued.

@Sailorcancer: Unless it's for a home console. I can get behind that.

  • PS3/360 would be nice. I could really go for a whip swinging, free exploring, powerup getting metroidvania game.

  • Well, the "leaked" screenshots of Order of Ecclesia do show "Wii" in the menu indicating some sort of Wii-DS connectivity.

  • @Sailorcancer: Consoles would be good, except that I have yet to hear of a good 3d castlevania. Maybe they should get Retro on the case. They know how to bring a series into 3d, and ever since SotN they've been fairly similar anyway.

  • Maybe it will be the name of the long overdue "1999" game, since that's when they finally seal Dracula's Castle in an eclipse (as stated in the intro from Aria of Sorrow).

Possibly "Judgement Day" could be another name for the 1999 event. Or it will be just wishful thinking on my part.

Hopefully it's in a similar style to the PSP Rondo port. But, you know, much more advanced.

Or, they can go the 3D route again. One problem with that though...mediocrity. I enjoyed the 3D games, but they were nothing like the classic 2D installments. That can be a problem.

As for storyline wise, are we finally getting the epic battle when Julius Belmont and Alucard take down Dracula for good? I would hope so. It would be great to see the events that led up to the Aria/Dawn of Sorrow series.

  • 2.5 d or nothing. every castlevania in 3d has been so much garbage.

    @TheContender: Read my mind!

  • Coming "When it's done"?

  • Castlevania Judgment, coming soon for Dreamcast, Gizmondo, and Atari 2600.
    CONFIRMED!

  • Yay for more castlevania.... but please don't make it go the direction of POR, screw that piece of crap. And bring back the awesome old style of art.

  • You scared the shit out of me for a second I thought they were going to announce a Judge Dread sequel!

    Whew…carry on.

  • Castlevania with some Bionic Commando rearmed treatment and remote play..Yeah,that would work.

  • OMG! It's Judge Bled!

an eye of judgement castlevania ...

so... you get to a point in the game where you can't figure out what to do, and it turns out you have to find a red crystal and put it in front of the camera?

not that this is included with the game. You just have to go find a red crystal.

    and kneel.

  • konami should just give it to capcom to make, then they can make up for devil may cry4

The best thing I can hope for would be a 2D sidescroller off PSN. The 3D games are alright but they dont instill that same castlevania feeling like SotN or the Gameboy games continue to do today.

Dammt!!! I got excited when I saw that because I thought that there was going to be a new Judge Dredd game.

DAMN YOU KOTAAAAAKKKKKUUUU!!!! You tease me again!

  • Yeah, I always figured Judge Dredd would have gay fangs.

  • Yey! More Metroidvania!

  • IGA said if he was gonna do a console it would be on 360. That is his home console of choice.

He shot down theories of a Wii-vania a while back.

Though honestly, if Konami decides something I don't think he would be the final say.

I am a fan of the GBA/DS games, but I think a kick ass 3D-Vania could be really good, if they really try to make it a AAA title.

The problem with previous 3D Vania's was that they were mediocre and didn't seem to have the same kind of budget given to God of War and Devil May Cry.

  • Can someone link those screens for Order of Ecclesia? I did some searching but no dice.

  • 2.5D like the psp Casltevania please. I really enjoyed the fluid animation don't think I can go back to the DS castlevanias.

  • My baseless guess will be xbl and psn.

  • Dammit IGA!!! The next Castlevania game better be bout the Vampire War of 1999 and better be on a home console in high res 2d.

  • @enewtabie: took the words out of my mouth.

Of course they could charge me 10 dollars and I'd give it to them just for having once made SotN. Seriously game ruled.

  • @Lackshmana: Though I wonder what does a budget have to do in making a 3D game fun?

Personally I thought that the Castlevania games on the N64 did a better job as a full 3D Castlevania game then CV LOI and CV COD.

  • Take off the tin foil! With ideas like it being for Eye of Judgement, we want them to read your mind!

  • @Tiber: Am I one of the only people that liked Lament of Innocence?

  • Image of Aethyr Aethyr at 03:17 PM on 04/21/08 *

    @Zwei Voltage: Yup.

I'm all for more DS Castlevanias though.

  • @Zwei Voltage:

    I had fun with it.

  • I don't think the PS2 CV's were bad, necessarily. Just...repetitive and a bit dull at times. I do have to say that, like so many of you, I prefer my Castlevania in 2D. SoTN set a terrible benchmark, in a way. Those of us who loved it want more, more, more exploration and crazy random item drops and weird fun monsters to track down. I guess we'll just have to see...

  • Last post on Kotaku about a new console Castlevania stated that the creator wanted to work on the 360.

  • As much as I love my GBA and DS Castlevanias, I wish they'd concentrate on consoles rather than handhelds. I honestly don't get why they prefer the handhelds over the consoles. I hate playing games on my handhelds because my eyes are terrible and I have to deal with a smaller controller. I wish companies would develop more simpler, gameplay rich games. I am looking forward to Bionic Commando: Rearmed. It looks great, it looks like it'll play great, and it's simple. It's just testament to the fact that even though the system can do a lot, it's not always necessary to go all out and push it to its limits. A Castlevania doesn't need to be full on 3D. All iterations on the PS2/N64 were terrible. Devil May Cry is a better successor to whatever Castlevania was (following Symphony of the Night): exploration of a castle, collection of items, RPG-like character upgrades, spells, transformations, different weapons. The Castlevania series on consoles has become like the Tales or Tenchu series. You just don't want another game.

  • I didn't like the DS Castlevanias so much. Way too repetitive for their short length. The only reason I even bought PoR was because of the 'extras' it came with from GameStop.

I also bought Dracula X Chronicles for the PSP, which I had played the emulated arcade version years ago. I also didn't enjoy it. The real reason I bought it was for the updated SotN. My conclusion: keep it the old way.

I just hope Igarashi ends the thing already and stops making such awful school-based anime crap.

  • Always glad to hear of new Castlevania games in the works. I only hope that this new one is on the 360/PS3 rather than the DS again. Don't get me wrong the Gameboy/DS games have been pretty good but I gotta see a 2D/3D console Castlevania. Iga did say that the updated Rondo was sort of an experiment for a future project.

  • please as many have said above make it 2.5, dear god make it 2.5 for live and PSN...why the hell not!

  • Best P-Shop job ever. Well Done!

  • @Solarman: A bigger budget title would be more ambitious, allowing for a grander game than we got in Lament and Curse.

Money won't make a bad game good, but a larger budget can really help a decent game become a much better game.

A big problem with the latest 3D Vanias was that they had unimpressive environments and fairly underdeveloped game-play systems, but they weren't out and out bad games.

But in general my statement is more about how they should really try to make a big AAA home console Castlevania game, instead of giving a sort of average effort as they have done previously.

  • I'd give my left nut for a high-resolution, Symphony of the Night-esque Castlevania game. But I think it's a pretty safe bet at this point.

  • castlevania is turning into a bizarre self parody; soon there will be as many games as there were souls to collect in the DS games.

  • For Castlevania:

    2D > 2.5D > 3D

    Sprites are awesome.

I would prefer a castleroid with quality sprites on a home system, but that will never happen.

Also the DS game was sadly proven to be fake if I remember correctly and you are talking about this one: [kotaku.com]

  • It is interesting to see all of the factions on here. I will go for any Castlevania that I can get, but I prefer handheld versions in the Castleroid style. The DS and GBA games are some of my favorites. I have been disappointed with the direction that the artwork has been going in, towards the anime look, but the action did not suffer much in PoR.

SOTN is my all-time second favorite game, second only to Super Metroid, and even though I have basically been playing the same game for years now, I would still play any new variant that Iga puts out.

  • @H8ff0000: There ain't any screens of the game. But, on with the topic:

It would be cool if it came to the Wii... Well yeah, of course the last 3D-Castlevanias haven't been really any masterpieces, but let's make this an exception, huh? Castlevania would be cool on Wii as you could whip with the Mote and.... Well, I think that Wii can produce decent graphics too (tLoZ: TP, Galaxy) and it would be cool... And we have Order of Ecclesia coming to the DS already so a home console would be good.

Hey, it could also be a Wiiware-title, couldn't it?

...as you probably have guessed it, I do not own X0 or PS3...

  • @Tzibo: I believe the creator of Castlevania was thinking of developing one but was worried that repeatedly whipping the arm would be painful but was looking into it.
I'd like one on any console really but its been really hard for them it translate it to 3-D...if I was Konami outsourcing development I'd get Retro Studios to make it, best 2-d to 3-d translation ever with Prime
