Stick a fork in it, this beta's almost done. Konami have just issued a statement on the Metal Gear Online site, which reads:
...we regret to inform you that due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected. As a temporary measure, we will be deferring the start of the US public beta test until we are able to stabilize our server. We would like to apologize for all inconveniences as well as confusion caused. As a result, the beta's start date - which was meant to be today - has been postponed, with an announcement on a new date expected on Tuesday (Europe: "we will be suspending the European public beta test and restart it once we stabilize our server"). To compensate for this, the beta will be run for another week, and is now due to end on the 11th of May, rather than the 6th. Good thing Konami are doing all this now, such a loooooong time before the game's due for release, because if they left it to the last minute (like, a month and a half before release, say), people might start to worry!

But Luke, it is only a month and ... oh.
Woah, that sucks =\...
I was really anticapated to play beta now another delay konami sure knows how to torture people.
What about the EU? Not to hopeful..
It's not too bad. Many people gave up trying for now willingly, I'm sure. They'll be better prepared for the traffic next time.
"You maniacs! You blew it up!"
Enough movie references.
Seriously though, holy jesus. How could they not expect this level of users? They know tons of people love Metal Gear Online. Were they just...underestimating? What happened?
i say let them take a little bit of time, but deliver heaven at the end, just like in the first mgo, that was a good run
its pretty much the same thing that happened with the halo 3 beta. If those of you don't remember, it wasn't showing up in the Crackdown Version of the beta, so Bungie extended it by a little bit as most crackdown users (myself included) were not able to hop on.
@John-irl: No EU beta :(
I guess this beta was actually a beta then, and not just a promo. Oh well it's not really that important, at least they're being proactive about it.
Seems very reasonable. Nothing o whine about, we get another extra week.
*looks at the story picture*
Somebody better tell Icarus to stay away from the sun.
Konami now has a a little less than two months to upgrade servers. Good Luck.
But...but...I want my awesome MAN-CANNON now!
Actually that picture got me thinking: does anyone know for sure that the cannon will be featured in the beta? I'm assuming "no" right now...
So...Konami...now looks like a good time to be crawling to PSN for this one. Don't ya think?
man oh man, the only thing worse than having this long-awaited beta delayed is snarky potshots and shit-talking from the haters that aren't in it to begin with, so uh, im out of this one.
I blame the people trying to get in through back doors. They always crash things. Stupid people that want to get in backdoor way. It's your fault.
@Lyrai: i think they did just that... "underestimate" . well we yanks showed them how to shut down a party early!
Say kids its time to play the Blame Game. I'm looking at you Europe. Konami dont think you are getting out of this one.
@Witzbold: lol! seriously i think when the beta begins there will literally be a line for the manapult. i expect no kills for least a couple of hours:D
@Black-Dog-Howls: Its open in EU, Japan
@tajash: I blame the backdoor loving Americans
@Rockwallaby: Ok it didn't sound that bad in my head
lol ohwell I can wait the 9 weeks until it comes out. Iam buying MGS4 to play MGS4 not MGO, MGO is just an added bonus to an already awesome game.
@John-irl: Japanese MGO site has the same headline.
@zanzibarlegend: Why hasn't it been done before?
@cornunderscore2x: Yeah I know, ah well, hopefully it'll be up this week so we can get that extra time.
@Witzbold:
Another winning comment!
What about the rest of the world. This PR only states US... :D
Man, this is why they have a beta, it's to see wtf was going on and to make sure the launch date of MGS4 isn't this messed up. So while it's pretty freaking chaotic at this point, Konami is hopefully going to have this stuff sorted before the real she-bang happens.
@zanzibarlegend:
lmao Now that would be a sight to see, especially as I'm waiting for my turn.
I'm expecting places like MGS: TUS to have blown the fuck up about 20 minutes ago with news like this. It's very surprising that Konami didn't anticipate this kind of turn-out, but not much can be done now except wait and see what happens.
I wonder how many folks will not pick up MGS4 because of this (myself not included; it'll take an act of God to keep me away *knocks on wood*)...
If anything, this just proves Konami should've found a way to work with Sony to get the servers handled that way.
...I can't help but think that, y'know, USING THE PLAYSTATION NETWORK might have helped too...ah well, I can wait a few days. I was hoping to play tomorrow though.
Even though I have no chance of being in the beta, I was really hoping it would start today, so we can finally see some good footage and rounds of how its going to play etc...
W/e they just underestimated the load i bet, they will get their shit together for the big day, have patience everyone!
@John-irl: I still blame the backdoorers. Trying to get into the EU and JP betas despite not being in either region. Then the people constantly whining like this was something they bought. Oh, and don't forget the snarky assholes that conveniently forget that most betas don't start off flawlessly.
Look at it this way. This is a good thing! Unless people want the servers to crash June 12.
Damn this sucks I got to play the MGS 4 demo at tokyo game show but I never tried the Online mode I really was waiting for this.
This ticks me off because I waited 3 hours for the update to complete then Konami Id conks out on me...
Could be worse, they could start working on it AFTER it comes out *cough* brawl *cough*
@Rockwallaby: LOL!!! Oh yeah, i thought it. Thanks for the laugh.
oh well i guess it keeps me from not playing City Of
EPIC FAIL!
It's still coming very soon. It's a disappointment, but we'll be playing it this week for sure.
Just think, we'll have Grand Theft Auto IV next week and Metal Gear Solid 4 in two months. This is what it's all about, people.
What? So the Japanese beta is off for a week too??
anyone notice that the playstation forums are down, maybe they expected a backlash on the site too...
fuck.
It seems to me that this beta postponing and extention just reinforces the idea that the beta process has just become a part of marketing.
While it does suck that I currently can't play the beta - I do say, score huge for Konami in general as this is a damned good (overwhelming) sign that this game will sell. Good things come to those who wait.
This was your chance to convince me MGO, because there was no way I would be willing to buy an entire game just for the multiplayer portion of another game. Now the beta will likely start around the 29th. Good thing I won't be doing anything else that day...
Seeing as how this went over their expectations... Kojima is probably sitting back in his comfy chair and just smiling.
Oh well, no biggie. I've been feeling like crap anyway and didn't feel like playing this yet.
I can't say this surprises me at all, after spending 2 days trying to finally get registered for an ID and most of today getting things downloaded and patched and ready to go. It was so painfully slow I figured today would be a disaster on the servers. I think in the long run it's a good thing at Konami agrees and they're going to order an extra server or two (... hundred) to be sure the REAL game launch goes much smoother than this mess of a beta.
Wow, if the comments on the interwebs are anything like what Metal Gear Solid Online's future audience will be, then I may have to cancel the order that I made for that bluetooth headset...
It's a scientific fact: the amount of bitching that people do based on a beta, directly corresponds with the amount of times I will need to mute my microphone whenever I play a random online match once the retail version is released.
