For a game that rides on artistic chops as much as Okami, this is a pretty bad F-up. Several of you mentioned that there is an IGN watermark on the box art picture. More or less, the background under the wolf was formed by a hi-res shot lifted from IGN's site.
Several readers tipped us, including Riven, who supplied images from NeoGAF. And Crecente just emailed to say, yup, it's on his box, too. Pictures after the jump.
I'm wondering if the designer Capcom hired couldn't get the hi-res originals from his own client, and googled them off of IGN? No idea, but this is some real stank on Capcom, at least for insiders.
Here is the cover. The IGN watermark is next to the dog's mouth. You have to squint.

Here's a blowup pointing it out.

And here is the picture apparently used to create the background.

Oopsie!

mmm..nothing like the smell of plagiarism in the morning.
Shame really, it's an excellent piece of box art otherwise.
Some graphic designer's going to be looking for a job in the very near future.
Someone needs to be fired for this.
haha, thats hilarious, although, really, maybe he just eats ign logo shaped scooby snacks, rooby rooby roo
I didn't believe it (and couldn't even see it, really) until I grabbed my own copy. Sure enough, it's there. Funny thing is they could've placed that damn PLAY circle over the top of it if they had noticed in time.
I have a feeling Capcom will notice this fast, redo the artwork, and all the boxes w/ the IGN logo will become a rare collector's item...
...then again, I'm just hoping I have a rare collector's item...
Maybe they shoulda have beta tested the box too?
Somebody's getting fiiiiiirrred. Somebody's getting fiiiiiiired.
@Pikadrew: Plagiarism? It's Capcom's art in the first place!
Pft. It's not a big deal, and it's getting Okami Wii in the news again. They'll get a slap on the wrist, tops, unless we've slipped into an alternate universe where IGN would sue Capcom.
Haha. This is pretty funny actually.
Odd for an artsy game like that.
That was obviously a bad move. But honestly before looking at there arrow picture I couldn't find it even when I was looking for it. So it's not a big deal.
You guys have obviously missed the point. The dog is going to eat the IGN logo. This is clearly a warning.
Capcom+IGN merger rumors GO!
I can't see it.
My eyes kinda hurt from staring, but I think I saw the ign logo
Wait, no, there is is.
Sorta.
I find it amazing that someone looks at the cover closely enough to notice that.
Wow. How lazy can they get?
that is really unfortunate that such a beautiful game is marred by incompetance!
What are we supposed to be seeing? These 3D pictures always give me headaches.
@Pikadrew: Er, aren't they plagiarising from the game's own art? Not sure which definition of plagiarism that is.
It's pretty hard to see above (I can make it out, just not obvious). Maybe it stands out more on the printed version, my copy of the game hasn't reached me yet.
If it's not more obvious then I don't think anyone should be stressing about it... call it an easter egg :)
@ParaParaKing: Um, NO. Who are you going to fire anyway? The designer who forgot to replace their placeholder with a proper hi-res image, or the several people who approved proofs before it went to print? This is pretty much the most minor of fuck-ups: the game doesn't need to be recalled or anything. Maybe they will redo the cover if there's a second print run - big deal.
IMO 'someone' needs to get a sense of perspective and realise that a person's livelihood shouldn't be put at risk just because they made a minor mistake with no particularly bad consequences for the company that employs them. It's not like they did it on purpose.
Or maybe you've never made any kind of minor mistake at work?
I don't know what kind of impact video games really have on people - do they encourage violence, or does it not really make a difference - but based on comments here, I think any future research should begin from the possibility that video games destroy a person's capability for sympathy...
That's pretty weak.
Sloppy. A pity because otherwise I think the art is pretty good.
Next, we'll start seeing ingame videos ripped from YouTube, as the porting companies couldn't get their hands on the original.
It's a sail boat.
Being a Creative Director myself (and in this business since '91), there's no excuse for that. ...looks like the work of a junior designer.
@somarix:
Hahaha, yeah. We're going to be seeing watermarks on a lot of new titles.
Get it before it's fixed and then it's going to be worth lots someday like upsidedown stamps! Maybe. I dunno. Probably not.
All I can say is wow, someone's losing their job.
reality check time, does it screw up the game itself? Does it cause some massive read error that erases the memory and bricks the wii?
Didn't think so, its a mistake, thats all. Calm down and take a sip of reality. Nobody needs to get fired from this, they learned their lesson I bet, I mean we're only human.
~Peace~
Why's this a big deal? I'm always disappointed when people in comment sections or forums call for workers' heads over very human errors. We're lucky most of our work isn't consumed by a network of thousands that relishes mistakes.
From an easter egg angle, it's definitely no 'U R MR GAY.'
@Twisk:
a junior designer with a senior designer working over him that missed it too.
a trained eye shoulda been able to see it clear as day.
@somarix:
Although such a thing sounds rediculous today, there was a time when the company that ported a game did not get anything at all. No code, no graphics, no sound, nothing. In case of an arcade port (which it usually was during those days) the porters just had to buy an arcade machine and get so good at it that they would know enough about the game to be able reproduce it. Donkey Kong for Atari machines is an example. Google it, it's a great story.
Someone needs to fire that art intern...
Though the picture was originally Capcom's assets right? So beyond the fact it makes them look like idiots it isnt really a problem.
Couldn't this just be a ester egg "thank you" to IGN (specifically Mat (Cassamasina?)) for shamelessly and relentlessly promoting this game? LOL... he even went as far as telling people to buy this game to support more games like this to come on the Wii even though the studio that made the original has long been closed and the porting of this game to the Wii was less then romantic.
I do agree that Okami is still a pretty game and may even be the prettiest thing on the Wii at the moment. One can only hope that games flowing with this much artistic vision will continue to be made.
Okay yea that's a pretty big eff-up... And I didn't notice it on my copy until now. But am I the only one who has a huge red and white circle with "9.5 out of 10 -Play" just clipping Amaterasu's shoulder? This kind of bullcrap really pisses me off. Its such great artwork, why ruin it with self-promotion?!?! (I guess it doesn't matter much now that I can see her puking up the IGN logo.)
LOL, oh my god.
The box I saw live in retail had a big red circle with whatever rating IGN gave the Wii version inside. Could this perhaps be related to the borrowed covert art?
"Our frothing demand for this game increases." - indeed.
@ocha: Then why fire someone????
I'm gonna quit reading this comment section, its bugging me.
~Peace~
Quite funny, but not really a big deal imo.
It looks nice, and it's really their art anyway even if it's on IGN.
Edit: Oh was it Play? :(
Debunked.
Way to go. How do mistakes like this happen?
This is pretty funny though.
Plagiarism people? Even if it was plagiarism, I doubt that IGN would get mad about free advertising of their site through viral means.
I am sure that the editors at IGN think the whole situation is hilarious. :D
Should I pick this game up for ps3?
Cool, I love stuff like this!
I guess I didn't notice because I've been too busy staring at the ridiculously placed Wii-mote on the back cover. Does anyone else find that kind of funny?
@AnonymousNoob: Its kinda weird. On the actual box art, it's Play, but on the cellophane wrapper, there was a sticker covering it up that said "A -1UP.com"
Wow that's the most random thing I've seen all week. This game doesn't need bad press. Actually any and all press might be good, anything to put it in Wii owners head, hopefully the will buy it.
For some reason I find this really funny.
Well since Clover closed down and Okami didn't do that well in the first place, I'm sure no one would have thought of keeping the original artwork around.
@Pikadrew: Its not really plagiarism, the image is owned by Capcom.
@eastx: It's a sailboat!
@Schoolimangooli: Sure! As a PS2 game though but it doesn't look as good as the Wii version as that has sauced-up colors and textures.
What the heck ... and I was already upset with my box art ... did you guys have a red circle on yours with the "9.5 out of 10 - Play" on yours? I don't mind when they do that with stickers on the plastic wrap, but on the actual cover? Totally screws up the look ... I hate it.
@Green-clad Gamer Dude:
That is true since the developer that was in charge of the port had to go through the old computers of Clover and what not to find and acquire all of the material possible to rebuild the game for the Wii.
At least its not as bad as this:
[photoshopdisasters.blogspot.com]
I wouldn't put full blame on the artist. This could have been one of those times when the artist wasn't given but 30 minutes to "polish a turd."
@Pikadrew:
It's Capcom's art to begin with so you're wrong and that is also why it's stupid of Capcom to do that. THey should have the art on hand.
Dude, using the healing brush in photoshop next time.
I saw this on /v/ yesterday. Pretty hilarious.
I don't see it.
Man I can never see these things. Everyone else sees the sailboat but I just cant do it.
[ecx.images-amazon.com]
Why is the cover art different on Amazon's website? Has this already been addressed by Capcom?
