Let's Compare Okami Wii and PS2

Whether it's on the PS2 or the Wii, damn, this is a pretty game.

(We keep getting emails about either the game disc being wonk or the game being wonk. Any of you having issues?)

  • Yeah, I have to rebuy this for the Wii. Never got into it on the PS2. MUST.

  • Ugh, the color on the PS2 version isn't that bad. GT fucked up with this video.

  • Could the difference be due to using composite for the PS2 and component for the Wii?

  • The PS2 version pales in comparison.

    Oh yeah, I went there.

  • To me it looks like the PS2 is better.

But then again, GT never tweaks anything for their TV or for the console, so it's never running at maximum performance.

  • @Jim Reilly: I agree, it was like they intentionally screwed up the color on the PS2 to make the Wii look better than what it is.

It's not to say there wasn't a couple other differences, but I declare shenanigans.

  • @Jim Reilly: I hope so. Gears of War looks more colorful than the PS2 version.

  • Alright. I had to stop writing a paper to comment on this. First of all, I have a very nice high definition set. I use the Wii component cables ONLY to play games. The Wii version of this game looks so crappy. It's so blurry, that I have contemplated selling it after only having it for less than 24 hours. When I say blurry, I mean honestly, it's almost unplayable. If the Wii version looked anything like it did in that video I wouldn't have a problem with it.

  • This video is pretty much a load. PS2 version does NOT look that bad.

  • @skitzogreg: Well your first problem is you're expecting sharp graphics from a 480p signal on a big HDTV

  • Wow, the PS2 version looks way better.

  • @skitzogreg: I have had troubles with some Wii games on my HD set too. its a Wii problem and not the game problem?

on this video the Wii version looks a lot richer but both look good.

  • @skitzogreg: Might as well ask the dumb question - did you got to the options menu and adjust it to match your TV?

While I'm posting, I can't get past the bit where you have to draw five circles as the elder dances. Anyone have any tips on how to trick the crappy hit detection into recognizing circles more often? The circles I'm drawing look fine to me, and I can't figure out why it won't accept them.

  • The brightness of the PS2 version really adds a certain style to it that I can't really put my finger on. Yet, the Wii version is just more colorful and vibrant. Both equally beautiful.

Either way, getting the Wii version.

  • So for those that have the game, are the controls for the Wii as wonky as I've been hearing? Or are they decent, and people are making a big deal out of nothing?

  • @skitzogreg: Okami is made to have live water color-like flowing graphics, hence the "blur" that you were referring to. While I do agree it is blurry, others are correct in also mentioning that 480p signals are quite inferior in sharness to higher resolutions.

  • @JoRo1986: Big deal out of nothing! It's not anymore enjoyable on the Wii than the PlayStation 2 though..

  • @RTW:

Um, yeah it does. It's more desaturated and so it looks more papery. Why the hell would GameTrailers fake this? "OH LOL LET'S MAKE AN OKAMI COMPARISON AND TOTALLY SCREW IT UP FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES". Where has the logic gone?

  • no my consoles better

Actually, having worked at a store where we had the GC, PS2 and Xbox1 all lined up on demo kiosks, I can vouch for the PS2 version of games on 2 or all three of the systems usually looks more washed out/pale than the other systems. That was despite the arguably nicer LCD screen on the PS2 unit, compared to the 19inch tube screens on the others. Madden, Enter The Matrix, NBA Live, any games where the game was a straight port and you could see both scenes, the PS2 version looks like this.

I haven't played this game on either PS2 or Wii yet, so I can't speak to either version in person, but I thought in some ways it looked sharper on the PS2 side, so I don't see how the Wii video is much better, the gamma is just different basically. Positives and negatives to both, probably.

Other than skitzogreg, who obviously didn't care for it, how do others feel about the Wii port? If its that bad I'll consider just getting this game for PS2 when I have a spare moment to play it ;)

  • @mr_dimsum: @Zerozaki Ishiki:

First of all, asking if my settings are correct on my Wii and TV is a good question. To answer that, yes they are. I do understand that the 480p signal is slightly distorted by HDTV's, but my other Wii games don't look this bad. I just really expected a little more, but I guess I can't be too picky.

  • I think the PS2 one looks better, and considering the fact that they're probably using different connections, the reality is that they're almost just the same.

  • @DaiMacculate:
It's not the gameplay that I don't care for, it's the blurriness. The game is great except for the fact objects blur into each other and create some confusion.

  • @JoRo1986: Straight lines are frustrating till you scour the manual and discover the well hidden secret of the Z button, which lets you draw straight lines. Not mentioned in game.
Everything else works just fine; I've never had any problems drawing what I want to.
Any problems with hit detection seem to be in the PS2 version as well; reading around, most people sail right past the sequence I mentioned upthread, but there are people who simply can't get through it on both systems. While it is easy to blame it on the Wiimote, on closer inspection it does not appear to be related.

  • @mr_dimsum: @Zerozaki Ishiki: I see, thanks guys. Well I guess since I never played the PS2 version, I might get the Wii one. I guess it doesn't really matter, though.

  • I have two problems with the controls. The "fleetfoot" move is mapped to the direction you swing the nunchuck and it's only accurate about 50 percent of the time. The other is drawing straight lines, a common gripe in most reviews. What a lot reviews fail to mention though is that you can use the Z button to force a straight line. Those two issues aside, I think the controls are fine and the game still looks good on an HDTV.

  • so you're telling me not to pick up my pre order?

  • I'm not having any issues here. I'm about half way through the game, just got through the Emperor's portion of Sei An City.

The only possible thing I can see people disliking isn't so much the disc as it is the controls. Getting combos with the waggle is a bit difficult until you get used to the timing.

  • @mowh: The port for the Wii took away much of the 'rice paper' effect in the game, which is one reason why the colors are more vibrant in that video.

  • Lovingly rendered wolf buttholes FTW. Honestly, Capcom, I really didn't need to see what Amaterasu had for lunch everytime I enter a boss fight.

  • I've had the game crash on me twice so far. And it glitched where Ammie had no head and during a cutscene everything between the scrolls gave me a shattered glass effect like the ones seen with Metroid Prime 3. But they went away and came back as the scene shifted.

  • Also, this game kicks ass and is full of win. But I have it on PS2 and have beaten it 100% already. I may still get it for the Wii.

    Maybe.

  • @DaiMacculate: Umm, you do know that LCDs, by their very nature, do not reproduce colors as well as CRTs, right? That would be why right there.

  • @skitzogreg: My answer is not dependent on whether your hi-def screen has your settings correct or not. I thought that was obvious enough, seeing that you own one and was contesting the visual quality of the game. The Wii can also, only output in 480p.. Why bother?

But alas, the game is actually made to be that way. I do feel the blur takes away from the game a bit.. Not that easy on the eyes when you have a 40+ screen sitting a couple feet away from you. Than again, the game is pretty solid and the lore/story is just amazing.

  • more colors =/= better

Clover intended this game to look a tad washed out, like a Japanese ukiyo-e print.

Wii version is missing the liquid ink effect as well.

  • I never finished this on the PS2. I probably need to do that at some point...

Hell, I don't even remember why I stopped playing it.

I played the PS2 version and I own the Wii version, and the video is about right in my opinion.

Remember, the original Okami had a filter to make the whole thing look like it was on parchment, giving it a slightly washed out look on purpose -- it looked fantastic.

They were unable to do the same thing on the Wii giving it much brighter colors, but losing that cool effect.

They look different primarily because of the filter -- otherwise, it's the same.

  • @GwennBlackfeather: Yes, you must.

  • to me, these just seem like slightly different "looks" of the same kick-ass game... I don't think the ps2 is lacking anything colour wise, so much as it's just visually trying to be more trippy/dream-like... The wii version looks awesome, but seems to kind of lack this quality... played through the ps2, but would definitely still check out the wii incarnation... bummer about the discs tho...

  • Wow...I've been listening to the soundtrack all day at work. This game still gives me the shivers.

It looks about the same on both systems, and I hope to eventually own it on both, but I already have it on PS2.

The most important point to remember is this: It doesn't matter which system you have. This game is a must-have. Pick the system you want it on and get it.

  • jayntampa, I wish i just given my post one more minute! lol

  • The colors on the wii are far better, in the ps2 version looks like an old whashed out paint...

  • WII wins hands down...

  • @kylo4:

Explain to me how that makes sense?

I can plug in a game using composite cables, looks the same color wise. I can plug it in again with component, and yes it's sharper, but it's still the same color wise.

How does "LAWL HE HAS IT HOOKED UP BY COMPONENT AND COMPOSITE" mean anything? There isn't a drastic color difference from using the two outputs, and what if he's using composite or component on both?

I doubt GameTrailers capture card would screw up a color-signal that much. Besides, the PS2 version DID look like that. You're probably just colorblind :P lol

@Deviation59: Yeah then why did Enter The Matrix and GTA:VC (and SA for that matter) look just as "washed out" on my buddy's 27inch CRT on the PS2?

I know the difference, trust me, I have 2 LCDs, 4 CRT monitors, 2 CRT TVs (one 13, one 21 in), and a Samsung DLP.

Its why I don't complain about Wii games on the DLP, I'm aware of why they look better on screens with a 480p native mode.

I also said the LCD was better because to test it, we put several DVDs in the Xbox and PS2. The DVDs looked better than the games in question. It also wasn't all the PS2 games, but it was more obvious when you compared games that were so comparable.

I owned all 3 systems, so I'm not hating on the PS2, but yeah it just seemed like a general weakness. Heck the DC had richer colors on many games IMO.

  • @Deviation59:

And yet, GameTrailers isn't using an LCD. They're using a capture card, most likely the BlackMagic.

Also, if you paid more than $500 for your LCD TV, chances are there's little to no color difference with a CRT. In fact, it's customizable. My Sony Bravia XBR4 is an amazing LCD. Absolutely love it.

  • Eh, the PS2 version looks better.

  • @DaiMacculate:

Are you saying Kingdom Hearts/2 looked washed out?

  • Why is it so many games recently are having disc read problems? Brawl, Mario Kart, now Okami...is this a recent problem or has this always happened and I'm just now hearing about it?

  • First of all, I want to apologize if I came across as negative in my first post. I just really feel as though I paid for a game that doesn't work well with my setup. I've had fun doing some of the quests, but I'm struggling with the fighting a little, lol. I just think people should be warned that the Wii version of Okami does not work well with some High Def sets.

  • My disk works fine, I just finished playing the first hour of it and came over here. I love how it looks, although I switched tvs in between the PS2 and wii versions. It's very pretty on LCD.

  • @skitzogreg: really? That bad? I'm not seeing that at all on mine.
