You'll notice long periods of silence in this video of my play through of the Iron Man demo on the Xbox 360. Those were moments when I was genuinely enjoying myself enough that I forgot I was filming it. Despite said enjoyment, I'd have to say that if I weren't an Iron Man fan, I probably wouldn't have been moved to buy the game after a single play through. To controls take a great deal of getting used to, the bits that let you use special moves to take out vehicles and turrets are simply jarring interactive cutscenes, and I could certainly see Tony's running dialogue with his computer JARVIS (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System) growing stale quickly. You're watching my second play through here. On my third I actually took things slow, and the flight controls grew on me quite a bit. Oh, and you can upgrade a couple of the systems in the suit...just not the one I was attempting to. Not exactly overjoyed, yet not quite heartbroken either.

I think it looks nice, I will judge for myself when I play through it before I buy it
I actually just started DLing this. Glad to hear it might not be sucky. You know how the movie to game thing usually goes...
i liked it, but i like all games where i have a "giant laser" and can fly :P
The most coolest part of the movie?
The optimus prime dashboard...
As much of a fan as I am of Iron Man, compared to Spidey and Hulk, the first thing that comes to my mind is how freaking rich he is, not anything fun that he can do (for crying out loud the origin of the suit was meant to let him live on).
Still, appreciate the vid.
I'm more likely to buy a tv/movie game with its original cast than one with an imitation crew. I'm looking at you, LOST: Via Domus...
Thanks for this Mike! I really appreciate it since I don't get the chance to play it myself till it hits the PSN.
u can upgrade the 2 things that are flashing white in that upgrade screen
Where did you get that awesome old school Transformers background?
I liked the demo. Ddn't love, but I'm willing to give this game a try.
I did not like the demo, I think it was an epic fail. But they didn't give much to work with, so I can't fully dismiss it yet.
@TaggarT6: It was available in the Marketplace. I was poking around bored one day and there it was!
Hunh. Didn't know there was an AI called JARVIS in it. For a brief, shining moment I was hoping they casted Jarvis Cocker for the role. I would have been endlessly amused to hear his half-mocking sneer denigrating me for my performance, or to hear him take a puff from a cig before rambling on about some filthy sexcapade of his.
If only this was a PC game. Then I could patiently wait for some other geeky Britpop fanatic to mod it in. Sigh.
I played the demo and this is one of the worse games I have EVER played. Its just so bad.
@Mike Fahey:
I was highly entertained by that, this type of thing should occur more often.
@TaggarT6:
Well, my interwebs is acting funny, but I do know there's a Autobots Dashboard and of course, you can make your own custom ones.
Nice Demo. Thanks.
Off-topic: You guys noticed that Crecente doesn't post blogs as much anymore? What's going on? Is he moving on to better things?
In my previous comments about the game I was worried about the ground controls. Turns out they're fine, it's the flying that's shit. Or moreover, the transition between flying and ground, ie. the point of take off. I spent a lot of time flying into the ground and whatnot. Control remapping would be nice.
But like you mentioned, I did get used to it and it became a bit easier, though there was the odd time I went head first into a fence.
I also agree with you on the grapple "takedown" moves. They're pretty jarring. There seems to be a single animation for each type of enemy, which essentially equates to mashing the B button as he separates part A from part B. It got old fast.
And it's a giant open space, so of course the first thing I did was fly as high as I could. And I was disappointed to find an invisible ceiling. Would have been nice to have some sort of thruster failure at high altitudes or something. And the lack of environmental detail is forgivable because the place is huge and you're not looking at the ground anyways. Unless of course you're flying into it awkwardly.
@WhaleMenace: Last time we had a Fahey presents: Masterpiece Theater, it was on Pirates of the Carribesn and a good time was had by all.
Thanks Fahey! You da man!
Round 1 : Fahey vs Mindless AI things that shoot !!
DING DING!!
FINISH THEM!!
@HobbaHobba: Crecente and McWhertor have been out this week for...reasons. This is why I've been going insane all week long. :)
No fahey, noo! The blinking sections indicate parts you can customize!
Oh, and anyone know what Countermeasures (X) does? I couldnt figure it out.
I was expecting so much more. Well at least the movie looks class. The only crappy movie tie in game I liked was Enter the Matrix. Escape from Butcher Bay is still the benchmark though.
well, if you can't make flying fun in an iron man game, you've lost the plot.
seriously, you should be able to hover without falling and having to constantly correct your altitude. boner move, secret level!
I played through the demo about 4 times already.
Once you get used to the controls it is a very fun game.
It is one of those demos I don't delete right away, always keeping on the HD for a quick play.
Interesting enough. For some reason the jerky camera movement and stuff had me thinking "Oni".
And I know no idea why I brought that game up.
@Mike Fahey:
@Terance:
Neato! I knew about the Transformers: The Movie Themes but I had no idea they released retro "Robots in Disguise" themes. Awesome!
@ortholomeux: Actually, you can hover at without gaining altitude by only half pressing the left trigger.
Another thing to mention is that I didn't feel the aoe damage I was dealing was accurately represented by animation. The main blast chest thing that Fahey never did (right bumper) did AOE damage, but it doesn't look like it should. The rockets would blow up stuff it didn't look like they were hitting, and there's no real shockwave from ground pounds.
I had fun in this demo, shooting things and flying and the little cut scene things were fun. Might actually be good.
@Bluecell: yeah, i don't want to "half-hold" a trigger. seems silly and annoying to me.
lol "im Iron Man check me out!"
"You'll notice long periods of silence in this video of my play through of the Iron Man demo on the Xbox 360."
Not long enough.
@ortholomeux: I know. I didn't get it at first either. But I think GTA IV employs the same half-press control scheme for things... so it's something I absolutely must get used to.
It's "Far-hee", not "Fay-hee".
@ortholomeux:
Apparently, GTAIV is doing the same thing for free-aiming, which is going to be annoying if you can't change it.
The only triggers that ever felt right to hold half-way was the GCN triggers...
@TaggarT6:
I use the Decepticon one :)
It matches my DS case <_<
I think the controls are fine once you get used to them, but they are definitely disorienting at first. My problem was that the game seems like it will get old really fast. All you do is fly around holding the trigger down and let the autotarget take care of all the enemies. Hopefully there are some other aspects to the full game to mix things up.
@Marv2: o.O
Wow, this game looks like crap.
Score:
Crap movie tie-in games - 765 (+1)
Good movie tie-in games - 3
Fahey, I like how you actually talked throughout the demo, it was entertaining. All of the Kotaku staff should do it. Ya know, so we can identify with you guys more.
@Mike Fahey: ;o)
The demo looks good, although it's tricky to tell how the game will play as a whole (much more of the same could get boring quickly!).
Is it free roaming, like Hulk: Ultimate Destruction? Because if it is, I'll end up having to buy it eventually.
@JoRo1986: did you try it before jumping to conclusions?
@Marv2: Noooo, it's Fa-Hee.
Hey, Mike, do you like your tv? I was considering buying a Westinghouse, but some people said they are not very reliable. How has your experience been?
@Mike Fahey: Also the highlighted things are upgradeable in the demo. Those would be the core systems and the aux weapons.
@TheRemedy: Read article carefully before making replies.
@TheRemedy: Did none of you read what I wrote? There was writing there too. You should look at it. It's what I do. :)
Some of you guys sound like you just aren't playing the demo to its fullest extent. Anybody else think throwing a choppers rocket back at it was badass?
@Mike Fahey: Read comment replies before making comment replies.
Upgrading the Aux weapons gives you Guided Missles. Which just rock when you lock on to something. Other wise blind fire rockets do a larger area damage.
Talk about mediocre.
@GiantEnemyCrab: I like it a lot, just one thing....do not leave it on a still frame. LCD's aren't supposed to burn in, but it happens a lot to mine. If I leave it off for a good long time it fades, but if you look closely at the vid you can see it.
@GiantEnemyCrab: Westinghouse isn't a bad company. Westinghouse makes really good "my first LCD"-type tvs. Obviously if you've the money, I'd suggest dropping it on a more well-known name brand, but Westinghouse, Vizio, or Dynex ain't not bad.
I'm going to urge you guys to give it a second play through. I was very displeased with the controls at first but playing it again to try the other upgrades they started to "click".
If this game has levels/enemies more interesting than what was in this demo it could end up being fun. If not...
Robert Downey Jr's dialogue is incredibly lame, stupid, and corny, and he never shuts the fuck up.
The controls are clunky, awkward, and imprecise. The gameplay is generally boring as hell.
The game's animations are crap. The modeling work is quite nice, but the animation displays an extreme lack of talen.
I would not pay more than $10 for this game, and that is stretching it.
Tried it. Annoyed. First play-through--get used to horrible control scheme, wonder if the fact Iron Man seems drunk is intentional. 2nd--controls okay, gameplay repetitive as hell, nothing to write home about.
Here's the secret. Fly around in circles holding 'fire' until everything dies. Fly to next point, repeat.
And what are supposed to be cool cinematic cutscenes of Iron Man ripping the turrets off tanks and flinging men into the air (done by holding melee down) in fact look so hilariously stiff it's worth doing just for giggles.
Weaponary looks stupid, feels stupid. AI is non-existant. Here's a fun glitch. Look for a guy on the ground, and run right up to him--like, melee range. He'll stop and stare at you. and do nothing. Seriously, he'll just stand there.
@GiantEnemyCrab: I wholeheartedly recommend the Sharp AQOUS LCD HDTV's. I've got a 42" unit, and it's quite frankly the best television I've ever had in my life. Great features, gorgeous display, tons of different inputs, etc etc etc.
Mike Fahey has the best narrator voice ever.
Oh, the pulsating icons can be leveled.
@PapaBear434: No. It just has REALLY big levels. Which is kinda the same.
@Asper:
I enjoy my Westinghouse 32"..I keep the Samsung 50 for the other stuff,but it's a cheap decent tv.
Still downloading this now @62%
Noob.
Try upgrading the things that are HIGHLIGHTED???
