As a series, Fallout has always celebrated a dark, often humorous world punctuated by brief moments of brutality. But how do you find the balance when the series enters a 3D world? Bethesda's Peter Hines explains:
We don't want [violence] to be the focal point of the game, but it is what it is. It's a violent world, and so the combat should be violent as a result.He continues:
I think we've done it to the extent that it's not realistic. It's a bit more tongue-in-cheek. It's Quentin Tarantino. So it's not storming the beaches of Normandy in Saving Private Ryan, where it looks like it's actually happening. It's more Kill Bill. It's violence that's a bit more over the top so it's more comical than disturbing.So in other words, just take the violence knob and crank that thing up to 11. Make violence, in essence, more violent. That's how you appease the masses. That's how you make a video game. Fallout violence "tongue-in-cheek" [CVG]

Cool. I can't wait.
More head explosions please.
Gause rifles to the face please!
The Fallout fanboy in me screams WANT. Man this can't come soon enough.
So... more fountains of blood?
More like "Tongue in dirt"
I <3 esploding heads!
I can safely say that's a perspective to head popping I've never heard before.
To keep the analogies in the realm of video games, it's more like Soldier of Fortune than Brothers in Arms (I hear Hell's Highway is going to be brutally realistic).
I listened to N'Gai talking about Fallout 3 last night and I'm so jazzed
and I don't like RPGs really.I'm even more jazzed that I might get a free copy from Beth..if I beg a little more..
He also mentioned that in house QA at Beth could not tell a difference in the 360 or PS3 version..that's makes me a happy man.
Its not really a new concept is it though, over the top unrealistic violence? Its the realistic violence that really gets people wound up more.
Thank god.
I also pray this wont be region locked too.
Then again if it is the LE version lunchbox will make up for that!
Fallout practically invented the gib. More please.
@Witzbold:
ah..I almost forgot about the bobble head..It'll be the first collectors edition I ever get.
Hell yes!!! More blood & such please.
@Witzbold:
I can't WAIT to have that lunchbox.
"As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives [only] moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion to your walks."
-- Thomas Jefferson, writing to his teenaged nephew.
Hasn't that always been the case with Fallouts? The little I recall is that targets pretty much explode when shot with full automatic weapons.
I think they're doing that well. Fallout was hardly a serious game - comedy, dark and brooding as it was, was unquestionably the aim. So having "real" violence would actually be detracting. "Over the top" murder? Perfectly in place.
@Flawless101: ... no, it's not. That's why they actually reference previous work by other people... like Quentin Tarantino.
exploding heads = pre-order in my book
@ara: Not typically. But that's what the 'Bloody Mess' perk is for. :)
@ara: Depends, though with the bloody mess thingie, it even happens if you sneeze on them :D
@KuromanKuro Live and PSN: More like "Tongue in the dirt two hundred yards away from the actual body."
Mirite?
@Witzbold:
It's getting a worldwide release on the CE.
@Krackatoa:
Precisely.
I guess I'm one of the few people who does not get "Hyper-Violence". To me it's much more sickening than straight up "realistic" violence.
I've never played either of the Fallouts but I do have them somewhere in my PC section box.
Personally I really want to play a post-apocalyptic world where I can live by my wits (try to make it through without becoming Lord of the Flies-esque) rather than resort to becoming sub-human.
Booom headshot, lookin gud
How could anyone deny Kill Bill? HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW?
Heads exploding in pieces = GotY!
Well, that's what the first two were like. So I approve!
That's what it always was, that's what it always should be.
Just over the top gore, ratatatatatta upper half of body comes off.
@ara:
Sometimes.
Unless you take the Bloody Mess perk, then it's ALL the time.
Though I personally found that Bloody Mess made the more extreme death animations too common and kind of ruined their entertainment value.
It's been years since I sliced a person in half with a laser rifle.
@RPGr:
You've never seen a cartoon, then? You know, Daffy Duck + Dynamite = LOL?
My God, this must be the second thing I've heard about this entire game that makes it look like it will be true to the franchise. Good news.
@The_Foo: I've seen those types of Cartoons, doesn't mean I like'em (I actully find it boring).
Besides, there isn't any gore in Looney Tunes unlike Tarentino films so hyper-violence is not an issue in those.
I'm buy this line of reasoning more if there were groin shots...
As I've always said, "Violence never solved anything...peacefully."
fond memories of playing UT at LAN's come to mind.
@RPGr: You don't like Looney Tunes? I fear you may be some sort of philistine ;)
To this day, all of my problems in life are solved with anvils and dynamite.
"DAVIN I'M PREGNANT!" -- Anvil!
"Your grant proposal is denied." -- Dynamite!
"Front Mission 5 will never come out in the US." -- Dynamite!
@onidavin: I dunno how the violence worked on your pregnant or grant thing but it has most certainly failed in bringing over Front Mission 5 :(
Joy! Does this mean the return of Bloody Mess?
i'm glad to see that they're not taking the "avoiding silliness" idea too seriously.
Nice. This goes well with me - I played Fallout 1 with a combo of the Brotherhood of Steel's Super Sledgehammer and a full-auto shotgun as my backup. It was great either cutting someone in half with a hammer, or knocking them sliding out of the room, then wasting all their AP running back up to me to get hit again!
I vote for a optional gore filter.
@RPGr: Well, if it's done like Fallout was done, it will have both. That's what made the originals so amazing. Few games actually present a viable option for getting through it without violence, or with minimized violence.
I mostly agree. There are a lot of games I can't get through because they go too violent. Curiously, though, I don't find graphic violence to be much of a problem, it's the quantity or lack of other alternatives. But Fallout was always about the alternatives.
The problem I see with this is, for me at any rate, while a lot of the graphics were fun, what really lent charm to the violence in the Fallout games was the text descriptions, which isn't going to be there.
Bloody Mess by default... excellent.
That saves me a perk slot for something else. :)
@DARTH_TIGRIS: I vote for an obrigatory "over violent bloodsheding, arm ripping, head twisting" gore slider, wich means even more violence! :D
@RPGr: That's fallout, actually.
You can beat it without killing.
@Slatz_Grobnik:
@Grive:
Really? Might have to dig out those old CDs and give Fallout a shot then.
I really should play the games I buy...
Fallout was a great game. I played the original for hours. It is to bad it doesn't run that well on XP (dies occasionally) same goes for Fallout 2.
I'm in a debate on which version to purchase, PS3 or PC.
@goliathvv:
As long as we have options, I'm good.
Gears Of War Gore In Fallout? Im All For It!! Im Actually Glad About This Approach, Makes It Seem A Lot More Gritty And Demented Which Is The Vibe I Got From The Trailer. So Ya, Works For Me.
Must know if this will run on XP or if they're going Vista only!!
Want to get it on PC but if it is Vista I'm saying screw that and putting it on the PS3.
I prefer "hyper-violence" to normal violence.
Blood fountains are always entertaining. Personally, it's better than those moments that are pretending to be realistic. Moments in movies where there are bloody intestines getting dug from a body (looking at the original Saw) bother me a lot by comparison. It fits in certain situations, mainly horror films and "gross-out" films, but cheesiness will usually work better in a video game. Exploding heads and flying nondescript meat chunks are always more entertaining to me.
