Who wants more storage? Everybody, that's who. What's the best way to get it? Just swap out the hard drive because Sony lets you Mod your PS3! One tweaker built this external enclosure for an additional 500GB of storage. While we admire the execution complete with shiny, matching plastic and the official PlayStation font, it sorta looks like the PS3 got jealous and swallowed a Wii. And a side of fries. And maybe one of those pies. Damn that gluttonous PS3 is making us hungry.
UPDATE: The creator wrote us about the project. We pasted his note after the jump:
Make your PS3 even Bigger [Geek Pulp] Thanks Jason!
Hi.I'm the guy that did that PS3 hard disk thing and seen as how I can't get the comments to work, I thought I'd tell you.
Firstly, thanks for putting it up there, I had no idea it would be up on websites that people actually look at :)
Secondly, I'd like to justify why I made it.
As I'm sure you know 3.5" hard disks are a lot cheaper than 2.5" hard disks, in fact the 500GB one in there only cost me £60; External hard disks don't allow you to save demos/games/updates etc. and I needed something to do for my school technology project.Also, it isn't really a mod as the unit is a standalone thing that just sits on top. I have pics of it by itself if you want to see. Also, while it does stick out a little, you've got to agree that I got the style right.
I know this probably isn't that big a deal to you, but people seem to have misunderstood my baby and it's a little frustrating hearing people say that there was no point and that it was just a big chunk of fail or whatever the quote was.

That is the ugliest PS3 I have ever seen.
That is the dumbest thing I have ever seen! They do know that the PS3 supports USB external staorage devices.... don't they?
It would be awesome if it actually did eat the wii...
With the mentioned swap out of the HDD, 160 GB of space is still far more than plentiful for my needs. I used to connect an external 500 GB HDD via USB, but that didn't allow me to download in the background, which turned out to be useless. For this design, I don't dig it at all with the extra pounds its packing on.
@Mr.SithNinja: If they are smart enough to do something like that my answer is ....
no.
It's like the Rosie O'Donnell of video game consoles...
I love the PS3, but good god why that font, why.
Does SONY not have the money to employ someone who took typography in college or something?
"it sorta looks like the PS3 got jealous and swallowed a Wii." LOL classic
While I love my ps3...it's bulky as it is now....this just makes it fugly.
"it sorta looks like the PS3 got jealous and swallowed a Wii. And a side of fries. And maybe one of those pies." that made me LOL XD...
Mods for the sake of modding....Sony already made it easy enough, why make it harder?
"it sorta looks like the PS3 got jealous and swallowed a Wii."
Best quote I've seen on here in a long time.
That is awful.
10/10 for effort.
1/10 for aesthetics.
@mescalineeyes:
Thank You!
I'm starting to see that font in the inserts of Blu-Ray discs now. It's incredibly disgusting.
I would put a Wii in there. Try to trick people into thinking I'm playing Wii games on the PS3. Tehehe
think it needs a spoiler on the back or a metal handle in front of it.
that would be an awsome mod
uuuhhh....yea *turns around and walks away not aknowlegding that thing exist*
250 GB HDD will do me fine. i will be ordering mine this summer. i have crapload of anime and movies on my 60GB right now.
@mescalineeyes: its that stupid spiderman movie font. what can we do about it?nothin *_*
OMG that looks like it is about to terrorize small European mountain villages. Even Frankenstein thinks that went too far.
It is large, but I honestly don't think it looks that bad.
@Dakobah: Don't forget the stripes.
And yeah, looking at my PS3 now, this makes me glad I don't have the know-how to make something that awful-looking.
Maybe if I took a sledgehammer and... no... I couldn't.
why would you ruin the undeniable sexiness of the PS3 with this... 500GB wart? The system supports external storage...
@Jnas: ROFL, yep...complete with her looks as well
@zanzibarlegend: oh I know what font it is, but I sincerely hope that everyone who can tell serif from sans serif is violated by it's mere existence in their living room.
see, I dont have to keep spiderman related stuff around, my ps3 however is essential. and it's not like I can cover it with a blanket.
@mescalineeyes:"I love the PS3, but good god why that font, why. Does SONY not have the money to employ someone who took typography in college or something?"
They do and they did. The font was created for the Spiderman movies. Evidently it cost so much, Sony decided to re-use.
and my response to your post mark wilson is.
L-M-A-O
the ugliest PS3 I have ever seen in my life
@Mr.SithNinja:
For real, so I can plug in my usb external drive and is going to add up with teh internal one, so in total i'm going to have 60(PS3)+ 20(USBHD) = 80(TOTAL) or it doenst work like that. I have never tried it thats why I'm asking.
I think a plain old external case hidden somewhere in the entertainment center would've been a cheaper better and less ugly alternative.
PStumor
@mescalineeyes: You could stick some black paper tape on the side to cover it up
Hmm, makes me wonder since my 20GB (now with 120GB drive) doesn't have Wifi or card readers, I wonder if I could fit a 3.5 drive in the case? Time to break out the screwdrivers!
No uglier than a normal PS3.
Which by normal standards is...pretty damn ugly.
@z357x: can't afford black tape. all my money went to purchase the ps3.
@mescalineeyes: i mean you could but that would be considered "smothering" :D
seriously , it is the whackest sans serif type-face, pre and post spiderman.
the ps3 in the pic above looks like Kit from Knight Rider had a baby.
lol wtf?
question: does that thing stand vertically or just fall over?
I'm gonna just say, that while I think this is stupid, this guy didn't want to do all the other alternatives, such as external USB Storage, or just replace the harddrive. I'm hoping that this is a guy that likes to open shit and mod the crap out of it. The type of person that would mod an NES to make Hot Pockets when he enters the Contra code. As useless as it is, he wants to do it for the hell of it.
@NotNormal23224: That's exactly what I was just thinking, also are people aware that you can gat a 2.5" HDD? Yes they're expensive but who needs that much in there PS3, just stream it all from your network.
Can anyone tell me why Sony decided to make you have to set your computer up as a media server? I want to be able to just browse my network and play what a I need a lá XBox Media Center
Some one call Benjamin J Heckendorn and quickly!!!!
Should've just made the damn HDD case look like a mini PS3 that would look sweet.
Looks like a cash register with built in printer
Ho ho...
Looks like a Sega Genesis at the end of its cycle.
Damn thing looks like a wood chipper. Reminds me of the end of Fargo.
Looks like the PS3 has a parasitic twin. A very ugly one at that.
@CanaryWundaboy:
When the first shots of the PS3 came out, I thought it looked really good. Then I saw just how BIG it was in a store demo.
Yet, for all it's BIGness, the fact that it was big enough to disperse heat as opposed to the 360s slim PC structure and I actually prefer it.
Functionality > aesthetics any day.
PS300lbs
@Ex_EA_Slave: all this could've been avoided if they would've gotten some hackjob wannabe designer to shell out 50 dollars for a license of good old Helvetica.
bland? yeah.
ugly? no.
@Mr.SithNinja:
@chacho:
Not hard drives in my experience, just little flash drives. I tried a 120GB iomega and it didn't even see it.
bleh. The post is misleading though. I thought they crossed out that section because sony doesn't let you upgrade your own hard drive. But they do!! They even let you upgrade it with any hard drive you want, as long as its the right size to fit into the bay.
I'm the guy who made this and while it's nice to know I have everyone's support (...) I would just like to justify the reasoning behind this. 3.5" drives are a shitload cheaper than 2.5" drives, infact the one in there only cost be £60. I didn't want to use an external one because you can't use it to store games/updates/savedata and at the end of the day, I needed something to do for my school technology project.
And while I agree that it... stands out a little... You've got agree that at least the style is there. Also, as some people have ,ade this mistake before, it is not actually attached. It is a separate unit that just sits on top.
