Looks like Kojima Jr. isn't the only one disappointed with Metal Gear Solid. The latest issue of the UK's Edge magazine contains an interview with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, who expresses disappointment with the latest game in the series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It isn't so much the gameplay itself as it is the graphics.
"Game-wise, it's pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision - to my satisfaction. Now Kojima is a well-known perfectionist, but it is a bit disturbing to see him voice his dissatisfaction with what is supposed to be the masterpiece of the franchise. So where does he lay the blame for not fully realizing his vision?
"When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress. So there was certainly progress made, but not enough progress...or more specifically, not enough power for progress. Apparently the team overestimated what the PlayStation 3 was capable of.
I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see.Well there you have it, straight from the man himself. Metal Gear Solid 4 is not revolutionary. Personally I think the man is being a bit hard on himself, but that's what great minds do.
Check out the latest issue of Edge for the full story, as well as a 6/10 Mario Kart Wii review. Eep. Thanks to mescalineeyes for the scan and the info!

Them and every gamer on the planet.
*cancels preorder*
in b4 shitstorm
I always thought the textures could be better, but I'm surprised to see Mr Kojima be disappointed himself. If the game still runs at 60 frames per second though, it'll still look phenominal in my opinion.
why cant i add a comment?
he said before that the 'nowhere to hide' trailer released years ago was a hint at the full game, which was supposed to have fully destructible environments. i'm sure he was just as limited by the PS2 though so i don't see this as a bad thing, and the story and gameplay should more than make up for it.
Well guess that just means there will be a MGS5 then.
Ouch, as a PS3 fan this hurts. I really can't imagine they've managed to push the Cell to its limits though (I'm looking at unchartedwhen I say this). Are you sure you weren't just having a bad day when they interviewed you Kojima? Odd to say this before the game comes out...
lol I dont know whether to be shocked about what kojima has said or edge giving Mario Kart 6/10!! :0
Best game i've played in ages. I would like to know what Edge thinks is a good game, seems to me they are being to critical for the sake of it.
I'm surprised he mentioned the CPU. Most developers mention the GPU and RAM
I'm famous!!!!!!!!!!!
;)
"...we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered" much like everybody else.

Oh dear...
*re-reads article*
Oh my...
unless the comments section is closed immediately, this will all end badly.
And probably with fire.
Eh, I would believe the guy but look at the games that Sony is pushing out. Resistance 2, Gran Turismo prologue looking unreal. Killzone 2 looking even better than MGS4. Its just hard to believe they are utilizing "all" the power of cell. I think kojima may have to do another installment to really realize the power.
kinda sad to hear that from Kojima. :| but maybe they will be able to do more with their other games.. :s
Kojima is known as a perfectionist, and this is him probably just made he couldn't make it look like an actual film...
@streetUK: Well then here's the third shocker that fahey didn't post:
Edge said Haze pretty much rules.
This may be a bit unpopular, but I always wonder about these developers that say, with their first game for a system (that comes out fairly early in its lifespan), "Yep, we're using the CPU to 100% of its ability"... it almost is like the (urban legend?) story of the patent official in the 1800's saying "Nothing more will be invented, might as well close the patent office."
Seems like these devs should say "We're using it to its fullest as we know how today"-- as there is ALWAYS a sequel to these games, they always look/play better, as it just takes a lot of time to really get to know a system and learn how to get the best performance out of it.
I think the only time maybe a developer was right was Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast, but even then-- the DC was pulled prematurely, who knows what games would've been like had Sega been able to keep the system going for a few more years (and have it be popular enough to not just get watered down ports).
maybe their engine has to many bottlenecks and hes to proud to admit it so he blames it on the ps3's cell processor
I completely admire the guy for being upfront about his feelings. Most dev promise the world and when they don't deliver, slink away. He's admitting he promised what he couldn't deliver before the game even ships. Admirable.
I'm gonna hold my thoughts on this until the game actually comes out. Kojima IS a perfectionist. And so it's not to say that this game will be absolutely amazing, and he'll still say it's a pile of shit.
Let's just wait and see what he's talking about.
I'd rather see him knock it than claim it's the best game ever.
Oh, and obviously MGS4 will suck. Right?
@Witzbold: Good point, he actually talks about that too.
He pretty much says, if there is enough demand, there will be another Metal Gear, as for Snake, Snake is over. For good.
@itsburnsie: Nothing ends badly when fire is involved.
Is it me, or is this jerk never pleased with himself or anything he creates? I get the 'perfectionist' argument, but dear lord.
@1981suede: Don't think he means graphic wise, it sounds like he is not happy with the scope of the game cause they wanted it to be larger than what it is. Really if they wanted to get his true vision, they probably need the game to be on a PC or such.
To an impressionist, oil paint has a limitation.
But these guys have pushed the Cell to its limits, THIS I GOTTA SEE!!!
Well, he's got a year before the now-standard ______nce version of MGS4 is released.
Based on what happened in the GTA IV thread yesterday, I predict this thread will self-destruct very soon.
@streetUK: Previous MK games didn't score that high with Edge either. Actually many places haven't give MK games great or perfect ratings. They are popular and fun games, but theres always are critical problems with them.
From the gameplay footage I've seen, namely that little april fools joke, the game looks pretty revolutionary.
In the very least you've never been able to roll onto your back and crawl like you can in MGS4. So he's at least got that going for him.
Oh God, pre-EDGE spoilers! /brain implodes.
You gotta remember EDGE arrives in my country 3 to 4 weeks late... I puporsly avoid going to Next Gen online to get spoiled...
Oh well, even the PS3 can't hold the vision of a great man such as Kojima. Maybe next time, eh, Sony?
I don't really care if he's disappointed in the graphics. It still looks better than most games. Besides, I don't even know what it is he was trying to do [that the PS3 couldn't], so how can I be upset?
@mescalineeyes:
oh dear not Raiden ¬¬
Strange my copy of edge usually comes really early and I still haven't got mine
I'm still looking forward to this game, even though this does seem like a preemptive strike against potential criticisms the game could get
@guy_jin: Oh, I loled... mean, but sadly true.
you know what would be an incredibly revolutionary step for a Metal Gear game? making a story that isn't completely convoluted and actually makes sense at the end of the game
yes, that would be nice
@ndsOtaku: seriously dude?
kojima is being hard on himself. makes me wonder what he said around MGS2 and if he managed to get his vision acrossed. but in terms of revolutionary, yes the Metal Gear games have looked good, and still do, Kojima has also always, to me, been about reperesenting a new type of gameplay. Revolutionary to me was having to switch your controller port in the Psycho Mantis fight. Or having you play as Raiden in MGS2. Hopefully he paid more attention to doing things like that in MGS4 instead of making the graphics look uber-realistic.
@Kyle81: PCs don't have bluray drives just yet, which btw. are also too small now. Also, EDGE said that MGS4 is nagged by low res textures and stuff.
it's like they go out of their way to hate on the PS3 and then they say Halo 3 was the most innovative game of 2007. Can't wait to cancel my subscription.
"Personally I think the man is being a bit hard on himself, but that's what great minds do."
Very, very true. If anything this article increased my respect for Kojima.
Kojima needs to team up with the guys at Crytek to make the ultimate unplayable future game. It'll melt your hard drive and kick you in the balls, and you'll like it.
It'd be funny if he was saying this stuff to play down the hype and expectations a bit. We all know what happens to developers that overplay hype...
Kojima is way too hard on himself, can be somewhat emo, and this game is most likely going to blow us fanboys away. Kojima is a wacky one, love him to death, but he needs more cowbell and flair in his life.
@guy_jin:
Let's not put some of the best software engineers in the world on the same level as the average gamer. It happens with developers.
While there won't be a MGS5 (or will there?), there is naturally room for improvement. One look at MGS3 in comparison to MGS2 would give you an idea.
Alas, the man is perfectionist and did say that a 50GB disc isn't enough for his vision. So perhaps it's best to take it with a grain of salt.
expectations causes disappointments
Wow that's a let down. Crushing almost. The man doesn't believe in his own game anymore, his own game that should be the most epic part of the series.
I knew the graphics of MGS4 were pretty, but not incredible or photo realistic, but I always thought they had a certain feel that bumped them up a little in front of the competition. Always thought they had an ace up their sleeves. For example the jungle level that nobody has seen could look fucking amazing.
Now, I'm having doubts. Not related to whether I will buy the game or not. But to whether I will be astonished, amazed and impressed, or if I will just "like" it.
As long as you can still hide in cardboard boxes to hide from the enemy...
Bah, trolling ensues with flamebait... On a positive note: Kojima is such an ambitious man, and I'm glad to see him be so harsh on the game -- after all, he has marked a pivotal point in gaming history.
@Kyle81: I wouldn't be surprised if his vision is almost impossible to fully realise yet. The graphics etc certainly look pretty good to me so perhaps you are right.
Oh whatever.
He's been working on the game for like 4 years. he must be sick to death of looking at it.
I'm quite sure that I will not be disappointed with the final product.
And if I were Sony, a company who is banking on this release, I would want to shoot him in the face after hearing that.
