Siren Trailer Creeps The Hell Out Of My PS3

You know what? I hate Silent Hill. But loved the first Siren (or as it's known down here, Forbidden Siren). Don't know why. Critics may tell you otherwise, but you know better than to listen to critics. So, yeah, after watching this, am I excited about the prospect of a third time around (going straight past the much less-awesome second game), with the same old siren and blood but nice new graphics and sound? You bet I am.

I'm excited too. This game looks creepy in an awesome way. Can't wait to see more footage!

I don't like being cynical but... Why is the damn trailer so dark? I couldn't even tell what was going on!

    Dammit, now I need a PS3.

As for your hatred of Silent Hill, it's okay. Everybody has faults. :p

  • Very Blair Witchy, but cool.

However, I still think Silent Hill first when I hear those sirens.

@ShaggE: I hate Silent Hill for making me so scared i just didn't want to play it anymore.

  • Never played the first one. This one does look interesting. Do they use that film grain thru out the game?

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 06:39 AM on 04/18/08 *

Really will be looking foward to this and Persona 4 in July.

  • It's a shame I hate "dark" game...I mean dark screen. I can't see shit and unfortunate that scary cames have to take place in the dark screen because this looks pretty damn good. Hmm...I would rent this game if I did rent games...but I don't.

  • If the game keeps the atmosphere of the trailer, will be some great scary stuff. Wonder if any truth to that this game is a PSN game that they plan on releasing in episodes. It was rumored in Japanese mag while ago that Sony Japan studio was doing an episodic game that would be delivered in small chunks over PSN

  • Looks interesting.

  • i wish i knew what the japanese text was saying in the trailer.

  • Where did you get this trailer? I can't find it anywhere on PSN.

  • Monsters/zombies that run fast always scare the shit out of me and that trailer looks to showcase a couple creatures like that. I remember the first time I encountered the really fast screaming/howling zombie things in Half-Life 2...oh man, I nearly wet my pants. Those things move so fast and are so freaky. That's the kind of stuff that makes me want to borrow some of Fahey's (unused) diapers.

  • WOOT the british accent is GONE!

  • Yeah, that'll do.

  • I've played a lot of horror games and have been forgiving of some pretty bad ones, but Siren was one of the few that I just outright stopped playing. It's a game that I wanted to play through, but the game's clumsy controls and borderline idiotically punishing gameplay made it something only a masochist could love.

Many of the scenarios I played were of the 'get from point A to point B' variety. But of course, while you have a map, you aren't given an indicator of your position on it, so its fairly worthless.

'Oh, I'll just turn my flashlight on and find my way, I don't need a map!' Welp can't do that either since you alert every stupid shibito on earth to your position and it's pretty much game over from there since combat is pretty much non-existant, making that approach worthless.

So what you're left with is inching blindly around an area hoping a shibito patrolling doesn't notice you (you have no realiable way to hide either), and don't go into any open areas, because somehow these goddamned ZOMBIES are expert snipers who can see you from a mile away, which is probably the game killing flaw.

I loved the style and the dreamlike way they rendered characters' faces with short clips of blended video... the story may have been interesting had I made it more than 3 or 4 scenarios in.

I can appreciate that they maybe intended to make you fear your enemy by making them more dangerous and aware than you are and making them practically unattackable at times, but the controls and movement, not to mention your options for survival in general are not suited to a game with the odds stacked so heavily against you.

HOPEFULLY they've learned how to make this game actually fun and give the player the proper means to navigate and sneak through the game without forcing them to watch a shibito slowly patrolling through their eyes (a gimmick which got old quickly, btw) for 10 minutes until they're ABSOLUTELY certain that the shibito's incredibly good vision isn't detecting them as they attempt to cross the street.

Please fix Sony, want to like. =[

  • I hate those scary dark games ):

  • Can't read Japanese... but I noticed references to the dates August 3 and July 27... what are they saying is going down on those dates? I"m guessing one of them is the release date, what's the other?

Anyway, this looks cool! Hopefully it comes out in America very shortly after Japan, I mean... it seems to be in English already!

  • @russtophiles: They did make sequels that weren't released outside of Japan, and they supposedly fixed alot of the problems of the first.

  • Image of jayntampa jayntampa at 07:27 AM on 04/18/08 *

@russtophiles: I don't disagree with your assessment at all. The game was made so that you have a specific safe path through each area, making the game basically trial and error. The problem was, the error was immediate death and a reload, which was frustrating as hell and just plain not fun ... even though everything else about the game was awesome, I thought.

I can see how some people would enjoy that sort of challenge, but, for me, it destroyed all the tension. It turned into -- ok, walk this way 5 feet. Ok, I'm spotted. Dead. Go this way 3 feet, turn right, go 10 feet. I'm spotted. Dead. Repeat, add on a little distance, die, repeat.

I'll give this one a chance, but what I'm hoping for is: 1) Multiple ways to complete a map; 2) A way to survive if you're spotted; 3)A better way to get your bearings in the game.

  • Looks good, but why do games have to be so bloody dark all the time.

  • Sold!!!

Games like this are why I got a PS3, I actually have the PS2 version but never played it.....somehow never got around to it.

  • russtophiles pretty much nailed it, that's exactly how I felt about it. I've never tried to so hard to enjoy a game that I just wasn't having any fun at all playing. It had a great scenario and great style, but the gameplay was just an exercise in frustration. I can't swallow an entire game worth of fumbly trial-and-error.

  • @Bogart Shwadchuck: The 2nd game supposedly fixed all the problems with the original siren, but we never got it in the west cause of how badly the first sold.

  • @Silverwolf:
Not in Siren 1 they didn't. Siren games use more of a VHS aesthetic. It's very Japanese horror. There are no cheap scares, it's all very thematic and psychological.

Me and a mate had to play the two Siren games tag-team.

  • Scary game trailer check list.
    -Darkness. Check.
    -Shaky Camera. Check.
    -Monotone color. Check.
    -Dirty Nurses. Check.

I don't know.... I wasn't all that creep'd out. The only thing I'm wondering is.... what/who was the nurse pushing in the chair?

  • The games have had great horror atmosphere, but I didn't like the gameplay much. I never got to try the 2nd one however, but I think this one will see a western release.

The psychological horror factor is more in line with Silent Hill 1 but more intense. For those interested, Siren is created by Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama. He left Konami for SCEI in 2000, so he never had the chance to work on Silent Hill 2.

  • You hate SILENT HILL?!? Bite your sinner's tongue!

  • Been waiting for this. First was very unforgiving, the second fixed most of the game play problems but the story was a bit pants...

Only problem I see with this one is the dumbing down of characters etc. to Americanos, which was probably the result of:

"American's won't buy our game with Japanese characters and situations - lets make them American!"

Anyhow, looking forward to it regardless. Also, the Silent Hill siren etc., most people don't seem to realise that the creator of Silent Hill moved on to create the Siren series when he was done with the first SH game.

  • While the trailer was too dark, it was sufficiently scary and it got me interested. Air raid sirens creep me out because they generally mean something epically bad is happening. And the masses usually can't see, or don't know, what the hell is going on, so all it does is instill fear and panic.
I've really only ever heard air sirens in movies/tv and video games, so that's probably why. I'm almost positive Toronto doesn't even have any air sirens so if I were to hear them one day, I'd go bat-shit crazy.

@J.A.: Well if you look at most of the ignorant comments made about the game on various sites its not suprising they decided to take this route.

  • @Soldrak: if u visit gametrailers.com on your ps3, you can download hd videos straight off the site and into your hdd! so download away buddy:D

  • @Strange Bedfellows: well the 08/03 was 07 so the july date was probably the release date.

  • I loved the first game to death. It was one of those situations where I saw it on a Blockbuster store shelf and, having heard nothing about it before, rented it to check it out.

Thankfully I didn't hear people's qualms with the game and was just allowed to fully experience it on my own - and that really helped make the game one of my best gaming experiences ever. The story was fascinating, and I was GOOD at not getting caught. It was scary and intriguing to me. Also, one of the best parts was that there was a whole series of fake websites set up for the game online that I delved into during my time with it.

I'm just so glad they decided to stick with it this long.

@Strange Bedfellows: July is the release date.

Release dates are always shown at the end.

  • Looks good. I see that it's already been affected by Bad Voiceacting Syndrome though (much like many other survival horrors).

I'm worried about SH. RE is just a shooter now, and SH is being made by a dev team that did a Buffy the Vampire Slayer game. And only the Baby Jesus knows how this Wii Fatal Frame is going to turn out. Oh lord watch it have a bunch of mini games that go around exercise -_-

    Hopefully:

    1.) America get's Siren 2
2.) The new Siren comes out in the States.

PLEASE BABY JESUS MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

  • What the hell??

I played the first one to death....unlocking every scenario of every character....and I don't remember Nathan Drake being in the game.

It looks as if they are going to be taking some HUGE liberities with this "remake." Don't know how I feel about the presense of an American film crew in my Japanese-oriented game.

    "A woman GOT stabbed."

  • See? This is why I hate focus groups. Siren 1 was FANTASTIC! People saw Siren as a Silent Hill clone, and expected the same kind of experience. When they found out it was more of a horror themed puzzle game, they shut off/gave bad reviews/etc. After hearing from these comments how Siren 2 "fixed" the problems, I'm not as interested in the sequel as I used to be. Now they have again "fixed" the game in the New Translation, I don't know if it will be the same experience as the first one was. At least the protagonist's hairdo has been replaced (along with his ethnicity...)

If you want a Silent Hill experience, then go play Silent Hill (heck, go get Resident Evil while you're at it)!

    *sob* Leave Siren ALONE!

  • @FarmboyinJapan: What do you think Nathan would after his misadventures on the island? Well off course, have a nice relaxing vacation on the Japanese countryside.

  • So the lovely game that was ruined by appalling voice dubs (in the UK it was shockingly bad cockney accents) is now ruined by an irritating American voice.

Bloody hell. They get a chance to right the wrongs, fix up the game and give it another shot, and they commit the same mistakes the second time around. Very disappointing.

  • If this doesn't come out in the US, I'm gonna import it.

  • amazed by this trailer.. i need to have this one as well!!

  • At least we get to play a demo of Siren this coming week at least judging by that first article about Siren being leaked early. I hope the demo is in english since the game had english audio already. It looks interesting.

  • Well at least we get a demo this coming week at least according to the Siren coming early article. I hope it's in English. THe game looks interesting.

  • Needs to be darker, I could almost see what was happening.

  • Sorry Luke, but in the Australian verson the cops arrive and no one gets dismembered at all.

  • personally, i'm crapping my pants waiting for this game to come out. i've been a die hard siren fan since i played the first one. sure, its not always the most responsive game, and it is REALLY REALLY hard, but thats what makes it so good.

It adds to the experience to not just be able to blow away your enemies and move on and the super dark screen (which can always be fixed with a quick adjustment of your tv if you're a wimp) makes it an even more hellish experience.

i'm sick and tired of everyone bashing the series because of the trial and error aspect or the clunky controls or simply because its too hard. if you sit down and play through it, i'll bet you'll find its a great game. i can only imagine that anything wrong with the first 2 games was fleshed out with this one. and so what if there's some american, as a black person, i always love seeing a black guy in a game thats not some sort of gun totting gangsta!

  • I'm struggling through Forbidden Siren at the moment. I do mean struggling. I like it, buy by god it's hard.
