Wondering why DC comics would seemingly sign onto a project that would let Scorpion rip Wonder Woman's head off? You know...kill a superhero? So were we. So were you. This might explain it: a former Midway employee has contacted us and said that he worked on the game, and that Mortal Kombat v DC features "no fatalities and little-to-no blood". In other words, "MK is dead". No blood, no fatalities...if this is true, why is this game called Mortal Kombat again?
Next Mortal Kombat Is...MK v DC?

Comments
being more of a dc fan than an mk fan, the lack of blood and fatalities doesn't bother me too much.
Maybe they realized Kombat isnt spelled correctly, and they accidentally corrected the family settings instead of the K.
Wait, WHAT? They're making MK vs DC? What a strange pairing.
In light of Marvel vs. Capcom, this smacks a little of 'me too' syndrome, about 10 years too late. If its fun as Marvel vs. Capcom then its all good.
Um...Why is this happening, again?
Superman would just kick everyone's arse
I always read Marvel over DC because Marvel was bloodier and more mature (to my tiny kid brain). Batman's edgiest moments were in dark rooms looking at silhouettes. Meanwhile I'm pretty sure I've seen all of Wolverine's internal organs. (for more viscera, see The Amazing X-Men issue #474!!! - Ed)
Title should read "MK v. DC is as lame as it sounds...and then some."
First they leave real fatalities out of Armageddon, now they're doing away with them completely? Mortal Kombat's main draw always was the blood and gore and violence. Why even call it Mortal Kombat if you're gonna strip it all out? Might as well just go the rest of the way and make it Hello Kitty Vs. DC.
Non-mortal kombaaaat!
Don't finish him!
So all the game have left is horrible gameplay and nonsensical guest characters?
... Meh.
Sub-Zero rips off heads, you bloody philistine. But I guess this is now a moot point!
On one hand, it sort of makes sense; Marvel and DC used to be the big rivals, so did Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.
But on the other hand; what the eternal god-christ? This is the worst idea ever. It really is. Mortal Kombat without the mortal combat? Lol?
@NinjaMarion:
Damn, now you have me dreaming. It'd be insane, Smash Brothers would lose its crown in a Sanrio VS DC cross over. Hello Kitty VS Superman, Badzt Maru vs Batman, Flash VS Keroppi, Kuromi VS Wonder Woman, Pochacco VS Green Lantern, Little Twin Stars VS Wonder Twins, Charmmy Kitty VS Batgirl..yes!!! That gme would be amazing.
Well that just ruined that game. So much excitement followed by so much disappointment.
@Abno: Minor Conflict!
Let's settle this with civil discussions and debate!
FLAWLESS VICTORY.
So it's Mortal Kombat with Batman but minus everything that people liked about Mortal Kombat?
Man, I just have to sort of scratch my head about this decision.
What? No death, no Fatalities, no deal. Why even bother?
I'll see you next time Rain.
i dont understand why they didnt just decide to make a DC fighting game. Is it really necessary to add MK to the mix to try and hype it up? I would assume that if you announced a DC fighting game on its own that that would be hype enough.
Especially when MK is known for its violence and fatalities where as DC is known for constantly retconning their entire universe every year. (ZING!)
i still want me some batman/green lantern (anyone but john stewart)/flash/aquaman
@deathbunny: DC Published Watchmen, good enough for me. :)
Renaming it Midway vs DC would be better now I think. If they're going to keep the MK vs DC title people who buy the game expecting it to be like past MK's will be upset once they find out there's no blood/fatalities in it.
It's new name shall be Moral Combat. The fight between good and evil and how good shall... ahh screw it.
You guys are so impatient, you're already posting rumors about a supposed next-gen Mortal Kombat that actually isn't officially confirmed yet.
Just wait til tomorrow when the official website reveals all, seriously. I think this whole MK v DC thing is a load of bull anyway.
We don't even know if the game is real yet, guys. Everyone chill. When/If they announce it, and let us know that the one thing that makes MK stand out against the competition is gone, the we can bitch and moan. For now all of this is just a nice pic of Sub-Zero and Batman ready to sip some tea.
@ArmyofJuan:
hell, I'd be MORE hyped up for it if it didn't have Mortal Kombat mixed in with it, personally.
If MK didn't have all the blood and fatalities, NO ONE would remember it today, it would have just faded away like all the other crummy fighting games like... well, I can't remember any of their names, but I played a ton of them in the arcade, and they all sucked!
In fairness, Mortal Kombat really hasn't been relevant in any way since MKII. Maybe something like this is what's needed to save the flagging series.
[news.mortal-kombat.org]
They point out the fact that there hasnt been specific console target [although they are going with Wii Exclusive] and that there is still a possibility that the gore-tastic MK can still be on its way to [more likely] the Ps3 and X360
@Knaaks: thats what im saying. If this was just a DC fighting game coming out i'd be way more amped up. But as of now, im on the fence even wondering if this is true.
But we'll find out this weekend
:picard:
OUT
@metahgyear:
Me too! A fan more of SF than MK to be honest (It lost its luster after MK2)
@Rockwallaby:
I was just thinking how will they do this in the game. Hell even in the comics/animated shows Supes was too overpowered to make any osrt of danger probable. Unless everyone who fights him in the game has Kyrptonite-knuckles,spears or whatever.
Wait, has this game been confirmed? If so, I am looking forward to this. Moreso because I want to fight as DS characters than MK ones.
Hmm maybe without Fatalities they'd give the gameplay more relevancy? I mean tweak and make it more fun?
@Ignorance's Enemy:
Ugh, I hope that's not the case. The Wii always gets the crappy alternatives while the 360 and PS3 get the true "next gen" title (with Sonic being an exception, as I found Secret Rings far more fun and revolutionary than the horribly broken STH 06)
Mortal Kombat doesn't need blood anymore. It may have been the case with the 2D MKs but not now; MKA would play well even if they took out the blood.
I've played a lot of Mortal Kombat in my time, but I haven't ever actually purchased one of the games. Maybe I should try and pick up Armageddon for teh cheapz.
Anyways, if I were the type to buy MK games upon launch, I don't think I would buy this one.
I disagree with the statement on the other post that "there hasn't been a decent Mortal Kombat game in over ten years." The titles for last gen (PS2, XBOX, Gamecube) were SOOOO much better than the ones for the gen before that (PS1, N64, Dreamcast?), and not just because the graphics were prettier, but because of the ways they changed up the kombat.
Deadly Alliance saw the inclusion of 3 different fighting styles for each kombatant, including a weapon-based fighting style. The fighting styles looked realistic, and the combos had distinct animations. Plus, with many of the characters, you could impale your opponent with your weapon, causing them to bleed out during the match.
Did that sink in? YOU COULD IMPALE YOUR OPPONENT (SEMI-PERMANENTLY) WITH YOUR WEAPON. So cool!
I'm guessing the feature got taken out of the next game because of balance issues, but I'm not the kind of guy who plays fighting games in competitions and tries to find the perfect strategies and studies frame data, etc.
Deception added deathtraps (meh) and powerful weapons on some stages (meh), and combo breakers (yay!).
Anyways, this post is getting ridiculously long so I'll just say that theses games were at least decent. IMO, more than decent. And this idea of crossing over into the DC universe? DEFINITELY late to the party. By now, I expect game premises to make more sense. Marvel vs Capcom sure was cool back in the day, but I wouldn't be impressed if the idea sprung up now. The lack of fatalities is a huge bummer. As has been stated, that's one of the main things that makes Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat. Well I guess the characters have existed for long enough now that they're icons for MK, but they lose so much awesomeness when stripped of their fatalities!
goodnight, Kotakuland.
@ArmyofJuan: I agree with you, a actual DC game would make sense, I have no idea why they decided to do the crossover thing.
@MeleeKirby:
Haha true that, but thats why you need all three consoles =D
ugh, so much good information popped up in other komments, er, comments as i typed that behemoth. should pay more attention to the RUMOR tag, and also check out the website for more info before i type up an essay.
My interest peaked at the thought of an unlikely crossover with the MK vs DC fighting game. My interest sunk at the loss of what made Mortal Kombat, Mooooooooortal Kombat!!!
DC characters are kind of gay looking and probably won't fit in very well into the atmosphere of MK but I'd probably get it just because there are barely any fighting games out
@Ignorance's Enemy: I own a Wii and a 360. Most games on PS3 you can get on the 360 also.
I would still like to see just one, normal, next-gen Mortal Kombat, with blood, fatalities, the works, and that the game would also be available on the Wii, with pretty decent graphics (If they're making a PS2 version of this game also then I'm pretty sure the Wii game will look just as ugly, though..)
I could never pull off the fatalities, and blood has always been a secondary draw. I loved doing Reptile's acid orb attacks, spitting acid in peoples faces, and maybe pulling off a teleport or invisibility. I loved rapid punches, uppercuts, sweep kicks, damn near at the speed of light. I loved the personality each character had. I loved the fact that the characters were pretty much filmed actors.
Then they introduced fighting styles, weapons, slowed combat to a crawl, converted it to 3d...
Sigh.
It's okay MK fans, we'll always have MK2.
@MeleeKirby:
My ps3 is currently sitting in its box with all my iphone, xbox, wii, stereo system, and car manuals and whatnot sitting on top of it haha. it only comes out when i get a blu-ray movie or something. But rather than that, i just bought it for MGS4.
But i see where you're coming from, its just probably a matter of nintendo going back into that grove or if they just wanna stick to what they have been doing since the launch of the wii which is keeping things more kiddie oriented
So this is more of a DC game than a MK game?
Worst... idea... EVER.
A game with shitty controls like MK without blood as a "redeaming" factor sounds bad, really bad.
I'm still waiting for actual confimation on this one.
GET OVER HERE...and...umm...give me a hug?
If this is true, that trailer we see tomorrow better make me shit lollipops, because right now, things are NOT looking good for the MK franchise.
So it bothers people that there's no blood but the fact that Johny Cage could fight Superman on equal grounds is ok?
I wonder what superman would do if we had fatalities.
A MK without blood is like Mario without mustache... meh
@Garo: umm I mean without fatalities...
Raiden is an immortal god. So I don't see how the other characters being able to fight him is any different than them being able to fight Superman.
I can sort of see the thinking behind this, seeing as how you can't kill batman and all.
why dont they just make a current Marvel V.s. DC ...
to hell with MK .. that game is sooo played out
From a business perspective, I think Midway had to go this route. Jeff Gerstmann and Ryan Davis were talking a few weeks ago about Soul Calibur IV and the state of the fighting genre. Fighting games have been sinking into obscurity for years now, except for the Smash Brothers series. Everyone else is hoping to cash in with what Smash has got that can get them great sales like that. FAN SERVICE.
So Star Wars characters are prominently featured in Soul Calibur IV, on the covers of the game and in every trailer for it. Mortal Kombat throws in DC characters to sell games to DC's fanbase. Virtua Fighter 6 will inevitably include Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. Fan service fan service fan service. It's the last hope of the fighting game developer today.
TOASTY.
Hope I'm not too late to make that joke.
Mortal Kombat team lost their minds right after 3, which is still in some parts of the US the equivalent of the SF3, with MK 2 being SF. Many a day making $5 a match at Pinball Pete's with a nice Scorpion air toss, teleport, spear, upper cut combo.
@OneManFreakShow: It's never too late for a "Toastyyyy!!"
@Antihippy:
CIVILITY
Honestly, this is probably more of a mistake by DC than by Midway. Mortal Kombat is just pathetic next to street fighter and SNK/Capcom these days.
DC's brand wouldn't mesh with MK's, because DC's is GOOD.
@frostcircus:
Street Fighter Vs Mortal Kombat ... hey! that would be awesome!!
This actually gives me hope, maybe they will focus more on the gameplay and less on the 90's gimmicks.
@Crawl to China: The impaling really imbalanced the gameplay something horrid though. You could impale someone and just turtle the whole way through.
And the gameplay is bad enough as it is already.
@zerojad: Only if Capcom makes it.
