In Miyamoto's Mind, Wii Fit Is A Video Game

Wii Fit is not a game. Well, that is, unless you consider doing homework and mowing the lawn games. Don't tell that to Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto. Dude so thinks Wii Fit is a game. According to Miyamoto:

Well, yes, in my mind, I would say it is a video game.

Makes sense. He can't very well go around and call it "It Prints Money, Part 2." That'd confuse the housewives.

  • Yes but we all know in Miyamotos mind, he is really a small blonde haired boy with a liking for pointy green hats.

  • George Takai there probably came up with the WiiFit idea after eating that box full of shit to keep fit.

  • If the game's Wii FIT, then why is he holding pastries of some sort?

  • Well since Miyamoto said it it must be true.

  • In that Pic Miyamoto seems like the type of dude that also believes in santa claus, Easter Bunny, Annoying talking sprites that constantly yell out "hey", and true love. Oh Miyamoto, you silly, silly man.

  • wii fit says you gain wait.

Isn't Wii Fit a minigame compilation that uses the balance board as a controller?

I'm pretty sure that qualifies as a video game.

I really don't know what to think of this. Wii Fit isn't a video game. At least not a video game to because yeah. It's interactive sure but doesn't mean its a game no no its not!

  • @Hilikus Penguin: He needs to get back those calories he's using up somehow. Otherwise you'd lose body mass and be screwed in the event of a famine.

  • But what does your "Heart" tell you Mr. Miyamoto?

Everyones mind is different i suppose.
Wait has anyone WiiFited at a party? How was it?

  • I'd personally call WiiFit a simulation of real exercise.

  • SAT Question 46:
WiiFit is to video game as:
    a) tree is to forest
    b) tomato is to fruit
    c) motorcycle is to Mario Kart Wii
    d) yoga is to excercise

  • @Gomerboy:
    uhh.....uhhhhh A!

  • If you have fun while using Wii Fit, could you make the generalization that it is indeed a game?

Jumping rope can be a game, or an exercise for example.

  • Video Game - electronic apparel with a input device + tv on-screen feedback of a interactive software that provides, among other things or not, fun.

So, it is... am I mistaken? Am I crazy? Those wierd DVD-video that had some (horrible, but some) games are video games are they not?

...sigh, I don´t know why people are debating this. Is this suppoused to be news? The creator of videogames that breaks paradigms about the genre telling people obvious stuff? We really are that close-minded in order to make only Kratos, Snake and friends as "video games"?

Wii Fit is that different from DDR?
    Geez.

Miyamoto reminds me of a Japanese Mr. Rogers :) I wonder how many Nintendo fanboys would love to play in HIS neighborhood hoping to meat Mr. McFeelie ;)
    ...
I think it's a good thing that he remains true to what he wants to do which is to make a game. I think it's foolish when people say that they'll exercise once they get Wii Fit as if that was the only thing holding them back.

  • Yes yes Miyamoto

    You're crazy, we know that.

  • Talking about wii fit and ironically holding a box of sweets =P

  • And just to clarify stuff I checked up those 2 links and I still don´t see how this "news" about Mr. Myamoto´s oppinion is a subject to debate:

    [en.wikipedia.org]

    and

    [en.wikipedia.org]

  • @Mikazukinoyaiba:
I´m crazy too. I think that the sky is blue. mhwahwaha.. lock me up now...!

  • Wii Fit is most certainly not a video game; its a gimmick to help Nintendo print more money :P

  • Oh, you silly Miyamoto.

  • Wii Fit is a video game.

    Let's proceed.

  • Man, when Miyamoto announced games like Twilight Princess, people would be speculating for months afterward.

It's interesting to see a game like Wii Fit in the sense that no one really cares about the details. I do believe it's the first Miyamoto game that didn't have rampant discussions on forums.

That said, is anyone actually GENUINELY interested in this *game* ?

  • @LeLoi: Actually, thats quite true. Nintendo is actually giving you a very advanced star trek style replicator in the Wii Fit. By exercising on it, it captures the energy to generate money which is then sent via a transporter powered by captured kinetic energy as well to the Nintendo headquarters. If anybody tries to open it though it will fry itself and and look like a bunch of plastic with some chips. Quite ingenious.

If they made it so they could control a robotic arm with a sword using a Wiimote, how long before they get the Wii fit to control a robot... or some sort of golem?

  • Wii fit is a video game.

  • Just adding my voice to the small chorus in the back of the room singing "Er, it is a game." The Yoga positions game barely qualifies, but there's a whole pack of other games (such as the soccer heading game) that are pretty much undeniably games. The wii fit board is your controller. You control with body shifts. There is a video of a character performing an action, you affect the action through controls connected to the system and you gain points through increased proficiency. You can play head to head. It is as much a game as Guitar Hero and probably slightly more of a game than half the war simulators out there.

I wouldn't eat a raw lemon or add it to a fruit salad, but that doesn't change its status as a fruit. You may not like Wii Fit, or think it would be fun, or even envision yourself playing it with your family like the ludicrously animated wii people, but none of that makes it not a game. It records health statistics, weight etc, and if that was all it did it *probably* wouldn't be a game. But there are "things you play for amusement" in Wii Fit, so it is, by extension, a game.

Now before you say "Ah, Ego, but Wii Fit merely *contains* games, since there are aspects that are not game-like in any degree" I would like to remind you that all games have non-gamelike elements. Most RPGs consist primarily of reading descriptions and dialogue--that doesn't make them books. They are games because you play them. You can also play Wii Fit. In fact, there's not a lot else you can do with Wii Fit apart from play it. It's a game.

  • By the way, if you say a word enough times in a single sentence I guess it makes the statement true? I really ought to stay away from the awkward prose pills before I post.

  • Yes, a game that cost almost 1/3 the price of the console you need to play it on, have to weigh 300lb or less, and play physically inept. Then again, it's Nintendo and now they're banking on Fat America to squeeze out the hordes of cash from the crevices of their body right into the palms of their hands, just so they can laugh at how much money they make off of how foolish we look. Playing their oddly entertaining ideas they seem to almost always get right, but to more importantly see how many more times they can make a profit off of it, which they always do.

To you sir Mr. Miyamoto I agree, it is a game... a game indeed. I just won't get Wii Fit, give me Mario Kart Wii.

  • Image of Anemone Anemone at 12:05 AM on 04/18/08 *

@Wyld: Welcome to a place where videogame players who aren't playing videogames at the time come to talk. You won't find more pointless musings short of a wandering into a group of Chinese academics arguing whether Chairman Mao was 60% good and 40% bad or 40% good and 60% bad.

  • Miyamoto is a genius... and totally bat shit insane.

But this is why we love him!

  • Image of Sailorcancer Sailorcancer at 12:42 AM on 04/18/08 *

    Mario Horse Riding Adventure CONFIRMED.

  • @Kprimed: You mean they're not?

    :'(

    Life seems so... shallow now.

    THANK YOU FOR THAT.

  • I don't see any reason, why WiiFit isn't a game.
Rolling balls into holes and headbutting balls back certainly is.

Everybody, who thinks WiiFit isn't a game, should think again and/or check his brains.

  • @ParaParaKing:

checked, nope still not a game.

  • I think it's a game.

  • Image of deathbunny deathbunny at 01:01 AM on 04/18/08 *

    @DanteODiabo: *wipes away tear*

    so perfect.

  • @Wyld:

Yes, Wii Fit is that different from DDR. In DDR, you can play with both the controller or the dance pad. You are judged on your ability to read the chart and keep rhythm according to a piece of music.

By your logic, Wii Fit is equal to Rock Band and Guitar Hero as well.

  • Funny choice of picture there, having Miyamoto offering you some sugary cake treats for an article revolving around a "video game" aimed to keep you fit.

The cake is a lie once again!

  • @MeleeKirby: I should've looked closer, I thought those were mini-cakes but they're nicely colored chocolates or candy of some sort.. my bad.

    Still, odd picture choice.

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 01:52 AM on 04/18/08 *

Ah, Miyamoto. A living testament to the effects early-onset senility can have on a human being.

I kid, I kid. The man's a genius, but I find more and more often as of late that I disagree wholeheartedly with his views and his design choices. Maybe I've grown up too fast, or he hasn't grown up enough, but our views just don't mesh anymore. It's kinda sad to think about, really.

  • Damn... he's happy!

  • EyeToy: Kinetic quitely sobs in a corner somewhere, repeating to itself, "I'm not a physical exercise tool, I'm a VIDEO GAME."

  • @Bashcraft: The combination of the title and that picture made me laugh, and simultaniously feel bad for him!

  • so does everyone hate the wii board?

it seems like a pretty badass idea. especially when more game come out for it.

  • Someone needs to expand their perception of what a game can be. Not enough alien shootan for ya?

  • Technically, anything can be a fun video game as long as you provide a challenge and get the effort/reward balance right.

  • ITT, hardcore gamers think they can second guess a man who knows better then they do.

It's a game folks. I know your asses hurt something bad because you don't think so, but it's a video game. Open your hardcore addled brains, you might just also wake up to the fact that your fast becoming the crazy men screaming "Get off my lawn." in gaming.

@Archaotic:I think you nailed it. You've grown up, he has not. It's not uncommon among creative masters like himself, some part of their mental makeup will always remain young, it's what lets him create.

@Ichidou: I am because it's going to prove so many people wrong and prove the crazy old men-aka the hardcore gamers once again are so far out of touch as to need the men in white trucks with nets to come round them up.

  • GTFO you koopa troopa looking mutha fucker!! wii fit is not a game (YET)

  • @burningranger01:Please use your brain in the future when making comments and not the part you use for playing Halo 3 on Live. Thank you.

  • well, you could call it a game, but it is primarily an exercise device that prints tons of money.

  • It's so amusing that by being successful again, Nintendo has gone from Kotaku's Messiah to its Anti-Christ. How quickly the fandom turns when they realize they were into something that was actually *popular*.

I don't even want Wii Fit (too damn expensive!), and I still wouldn't be blind enough to say it's not a game just because I don't like it. Does this mean that any game I don't like can be removed from its very medium just by the sheer will of my dislike? Oh, the possibilities.

  • This "casual" vs. "hardcore" gamer is a really dumb, arbitrary labeling system that videogame "journalism" has tried to dump on buyers. Please stop. VIDEOGAMES are VIDEOGAMES.

  • i'm sorry, but if Work Time Fun for the PSP is a game, then so is Wii Fit.

  • kotaku has the BEST miyamoto pictures.

  • It is a game.

  • It occurs to me a lot of things may be true in Miyamoto's mind that aren't universal truths ...

  • @GhaleonUnlimited:They wouldn't be able to dump it on gamers with such ease if so many of them didn't run to grab the 'hardcore' label, a soap box and then act just like the typical unwashed 'hardcore' in any fandom does towards those not as much.
