Well no wonder we've not seen a press release for Spider-Man: Web of Shadows! Yahoo! has the exclusive details on the new game, including the announcement trailer and a few choice pieces of concept art. Web of Shadows, developed by Shaba and Treyarch, the game features the same free-roaming gameplay we've come to be cautiously optimistic about, with a dark twist. New York City has been invaded by something horrible, the city leaders have declared martial law, and Spidey's friends and foes alike are struggling to handle the situation. You'll work aside friends like S.H.I.E.L.D. and Luke Cage, as well as enemies like The Kingpin. Choice plays a big part in the game, with gameplay decisions having effect on how the public views you as well as which allies join you for the final battle. Choice even factors into the marketing, as you can now sign up at the official website, where you'll be able to vote on which features get revealed and where the next trailer takes place.
It's far too early to tell if the game will be any better than the last two bombs, but I like the direction they're heading in. Darker is better.

Now if only that was an ingame shot... heh.
What's with the paper-thin eyes? It's such a small difference...but it bothers me so much!
Last two bombs? Spiderman 2 video game was a big hit and one of the best marvel video games in past years.
Last time we had "darker and edgier" Spider-man, he was sporting an emo haircut and cutting disco moves.
Cautiosly optimistic is a bit generous.
@Kyle81:
Does Friend or Foe count?
@Kyle81: I think he's talking about the shitty team-up game that came out. I can't think of the name.
I lost all hope in the Spider-Man games after Spider-Man 3. That game blew hard.
@Kyle81: True that, in fact Im struggling to find any other bad spiderman game besides #3
even the cartoony one featuring venom was darn fun
Am I the only one who actually really enjoyed Ultimate Spider-man? Or are you referring to 3 and Friend or Foe as the last two?
I'm liking the art direction, but will it play good?
Heh. Darker Parker.
Whenever I play Crackdown, I feel like it'd be an excellent engine for a Spiderman game. Just need to throw in the web-slinging.
Really, Crackdown could serve as a great engine for any superhero game.
@QualityJeverage: he's squinting...squinting at the evil that surrounds him.
@ bangbangblah
He's probably referring to those as the last two since they were, you know, the last two.
@Hauler: Remember though, the problem with Spider-man 3 (And Spider-man 2 for that matter) is that it was a movie-based game. So, as always, it's development time was severely restricted.
This one isn't tied to any movie, which means (Hopefully) they can take all the time they need to make it awesome.
I hope they discuss this at the Activision panel at the New York Comicon on Sunday.
From the description it seems like a less-cartoony more serious version of Spiderman: Friend or Foe only with an added kick. Also, the way the public views you depending on what you do sounds like something they took straight out of Naruto: Rise of a Ninja (360).
@QualityJeverage: I hadn't noticed this until you said it... but now it's bothering me as well.
As for the game I'm all for the last sentence Fahey wrote: "Darker is better." Anytime a normally 'castrated' videogame breaks free of those who would pacify it--it becomes a great thing. (Usually.)
This kinda brings to mind kind of a silent hill/parasite eve feeling about the game where the town is overrun by some form of evil.
Though I'm not a big fan of 'choice' games, as no system is complex and dynamic enough to handle every choice you make affecting the ending in a specific way, I do believe that choices which open and close doors to partners is always fun.
Sounds decent so far, we'll have to wait on more news.
As long as this isn't anything like Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, I'm up for it. I wanted the Spider-Man games to change up a bit, but after seeing that crap from a friend, I welcome the lack of change from an already successful formula.
@Truvill: That is so true.. That film was a disaster!
will Parker dance on the sidewalk?
@QualityJeverage: I actually enjoyed Spider-Man 2 and consider it the best of the bunch.
Friend or Foe and Ultimate Spider-Man weren't tied to a movie either and they were definitely not "great games". Decent, but not great.
It looks like those snake fireworks that you light and they grow for a few seconds lol.
@ZeroGinc: Maybe it'll be based off of that episode of South Park.
Hey, I'm alright with this Spidey look. It has a retro feel to it.
@DataScream: Oh, now that was just uncalled for. :(
@QualityJeverage: Ah, why did you have to say that? Now that I see it it looks freaky.
@DataScream: Am I the only one who liked that scene? I thought it was hilarious.
Make it good. Real good. Else I'll send a very angry Spidey fan after you. He's out to kill, to skin the devs alive, cuss, or worse. Yea I'm talking about me in the third person ^_^
This seems like a mix of Spider-Man 2 and the original Spider-Man for the PS1 to me. I played both of those games to death and I'd be one happy gamer if this one was like either one.
I never bothered with 3 so I wouldn't know how that was. Still had fun with Ultimate though...
@Candlejack: You get 10 points for having such an obscure reference as a username :P
Gogo Freakazoid.
Ultimate Spider-Man was great. Spider-Man 3 and Friend or Foe made me want to hang myself.
So this game is way off my radar until we know more about it.
Hmm, I tolerated Spiderman 2, but and a little prude about this game. I'll wait till it has come out, and read reviews, before I play it....
Spider Man 2 was a fun game to move around in. Playing, you actually felt like you were controlling Spider-man. It had its problems (repetition, no difficulty curve, poor bosses, poor interior camerawork) but the the webslinging was fun.
Fix what's broken in Spider-man 2, and the sequel could be tons of fun.
Ultimate Spider-Man broke the webslinging. He uses one hand, and jumps between swings. It's ridiculous. And the Venom scenes are just plain bad. Venom plays like the Incredible Hulk on an off-day. Much of that comes from the Ultimate version of Venom being an incredible clod.
@SlamDancinMoogle: Why thank you! "What's for dinner, mum?" "10 Kotaku points!" :D Heh, joking. Much appreciated. I watched Freakazoid back when I was younger.
@QualityJeverage: Alex Ross draws spiderman like that.@SlamDancinMoogle: you must be new here.@Candlejack: After the horse shit that is one more day, I wouldn't doubt it.
Personally, from the trailer, it looks good.
Just hope the symbiote wars shit isn't too stupid.
@BlackDove: I wasn't totally paying attention and I thought it was for a second before the entire thing loaded.
I'll be trading in my copy of Spider-Man 3 for this if it turns out well...
@QualityJeverage: They looks like classic eyes. [www.dvdinmypants.com]
S.H.I.E.L.D.?
Don't you mean Nick Fury? Or Maria Hill, depending on what they're basing the story on...
[l.yimg.com]
what's wrong with spiderman's hand in this picture???
Darker is better?
Shadow the Hedgehog was awesome, right?
DAMN!
those eyes remind me of Spiderman Circa 1960s 1970s.. im liking the angle they are taking with this... fingers crossed :)
Hopefully they expand on the gameplay elements of Ultimate Spider-Man, just without the gang gauntlets and bring back two handed swinging.
It looks like Ryoichi Ikegami did that drawing. He is famous for "Crying Freeman" and also did the Spider-Man manga(the actual Japanese one, not the American Mangaverse crap).
Yahoo! doesn't have exclusive details - IGN has pretty much the same details as well.
It immediatly grabbed my attention when i saw the words Luke and Cage side by side....
Throw In Deadpool and i will be first in line when this game is released....
blah blah blah symbiotes invade new york blah blah blah black suit blah blah carnage hinted at blah
The trailer looks good, i like the ruined city...for the first time a spidey game has a decent envirioment...
im waiting for a planet of simboints game...that would be the best
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino: Make it a classic power man costume and throw in Iron Fist and I'll be all over this game.
Cloak and Dagger would be awesome too.
@Dave Silva: I think it's gonna be Nick Fury, unless they're staying close to whatever is happening in the marvel U right now. It's nice of them to put Luke Cage in though.
@ManjiKengo: That's not Alex Ross, that's Gabriele Dell'otto, an Italian comic painter best known for the Secret War mini-series from 2004/5.
Spiderman 2 was great, but 3 was nonfunctional garbage. I have little hope for this game, but really really wish it would be good.
mmm, squintyman, you bring your squinty eyes into my life once more
Spidey 2: The Movie: The Game... The thing... is one of my favorite games. I loved the controls, too bad they completely dumbed it down for Ultimate and Spidey 3 was crap as well.
It looks like maybe the aliens from Venom's home planet have invaded, that would be cool.
Wow, one of the trailers is going to be set in Harlem. If I was Spider-man I would rather fight the Sinister Six than be in Harlem after midnight. But he IS wearing both red and blue so he might be safe.
