According to CVG's recent GTA IV Collector's Edition magazine, the Xbox 360's downloadable content could be even bigger than anyone has made it out to be. It could be a whole new city.
Of course, to call games as vastly ambitious as Vice City or San Andreas mere 'expansion packs' seems childish, but nevertheless, the downloadable content (DLC) coming for the Xbox 360 version of IV has repositioned those games in just this way. DLC so far has meant the odd new car, jumper of bit of horse armour...CVG continued:
...but GTA IV is set to completely redefine the idea with expansions that are to GTA IV what Vice City or San Andreas were GTA III. Yes, Rockstar is clearly hinting at new downloadable cities; and the chances of them being London, Vice City or SA again are slim to none. So that's new as in brand new. GTA IV's Liberty City is the beginning. Think about that and be excited.The only problem we see with this scenario is that new cities can't just be generated with the flip of a switch. They require meticulous, intelligent design so they stream appropriately, and a ton of playtesting to sort the bugs.
So while it's certainly not impossible for Rockstar to cook up more cities for GTA IV's expansion packs, it's a difficult enough proposition that this rumor comes off as a bit tough to swallow (though, hey, we sure do hope that it's true).
Rumour - GTA IV DLC Will Be New Cities?!?! [GamerVision] [image]

Somehow, this makes DLC "worth it" in my mind...
Holy crap-balls. I was in the air about PS3/360 version but now I'm sold.
If it's entire cities it'll be a fenitie blow to the ps3...
alright have fun paying 45 dollars per DLC xbox owners!
I don't see it personally.
I CAN'T WAIT! Ahhhh
@Godluvsugly:
Are you trying to tell me that if the DLC option came to the PS3, an entire new city for you to explore and rip to shreds, you wouldn't drop some cash on it? Please...
I'm assuming they'd charge near the same price as a whole game?
And what about people who want to just play in the one city, I mean you did not have to buy GTA3 to play San Andreas...
I don't know what I think about this.
HOLY SHIT! that is awesome.
Now that that's out of the way... I am extremely doubtful of this.
@Godluvsugly: If it is in fact whole new cities, I will sir.
@Godluvsugly: we will, and have fun with an incomplete game PS3 owners
well... there goes the PS3 as we know it...
@Lazlo: I think that was the whole Idea of this story--
I 'm buying it for the PS3 and giving the format I have always played GTA on benefit of the doubt
@Godluvsugly:
Have fun not having whole new cities, PS3 owners!
Jeez, the game is released in less than 2 weeks and MS still hasn't announced what the DLC will include not to mention market it.
One word: AWESOME!
Yep, the 360 version of GTA IV is definitely the version to get.
great, I dont plan on getting a 360 and have a PS3...
So you mean to tell me if they decide DLC will be new cities, they will shaft me and everyone else who has the PS3 version? fuck that they better bring extra cities to people who have PS3s too!
Lol be prepared to pay $30+ for these new cities, IF they happen.
A new damn city? Really? I can't believe so many people are so easily buying into this. Unsubstantiated rumors are enough to sway people's fair weather opinions eh?
makes me regret not having a 360, then again, i wouldnt have bought it
Damn that is a bit crap if it is true. Hopefully the ps3 does get some of this action eventually.
@almattitude_v1: Please stop trolling, it is certainly a point against the PS3 but i hate it when people make rash judgements like this. Please leave the fanboy attitude at the door.
So this is why Peter Moore inked his arm with the GTA4 logo, it might have been that big a deal.
the 360 has a lock on DLC... nothing would stop Rockstarr from selling disk versions of the new cities for the PS3.
If this was true... isn't this going to be a rather large file to download? seems kinda big for DLC.
Something also tells me that if EA gets their hands on Rockstar that the exclusive DLC won't be too exclusive anymore lol.
That sounds like a mighty large download. Certainly larger than a memory card, but I guess MS will make the exception for GTA.
I think that if something that huge was planned, it would have been announced before now.
A part of me is thinking that this is an planted rumor meant to make people select the 360 to play GTA on.
Seems very unlikely. Why would they want to limit the audience that much when Vice City and San Andreas sold 15+ million each.
This is nonsense and just a rouse because Microsoft is afraid, that more people will buy the PS3 version.
First the 360 doesn't have enough HDD capacity to have multiple cities.
Second Take Two would rather sell a new city as a new game, because people would buy it.
I think they may roll out the long-hinted-at Carson City as a DLC pack. That would be amazing. There's references to it in San Andreas and (I think) in Vice City, so that would be sweet.
I literally cannot wait for this one. GTA IV, Saints Row 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Gears of War 2 -- the year of the awesome sequels!
Ah hello speculation my old friend.
I don't think they'd need to charge the full price of a new game ... it'll probably be the cost of an expansion $20-$30, or so ... if it's really that large.
The reason I think it'll be around that price is because the development costs have already been covered, they don't have to pay for physical reproduction, no cost for shipping, and they've already been subsidized to the tune of $50 million by Microsoft.
Now, these numbers mean nothing, but say you sell it for $20 ... you spend $2 million in development costs (because, as Mark pointed out, cities take a lot of work), and you then sell 2.5 million downloads. Even with MS's cut, you're talking an awesome return.
This is where I think MS was brilliant -- if they new the DLC was going to be that major, they're going to make back that $50 million investment easily.
@segamanxero:
Don't worry I seriously doubt the dlc will be entire cities. Maybe just large but not massive new areas of the map. Anyways If you're seriously concerned over not getting dlc, you better get a 360, because the first two packs aren't coming to the PS3.
So if they said the PS3 will still get DLC, wonder what it would be? horse armor?
I still intend to get it on my ps3 just cause well.. online is free. and well, my ps3 hasnt been known to red ring during long play sessions or eat disks like my 360 does... bad 360 bad! So anyone know of a place that sells 360 dvd rom drives? *grumble* pos microsoft hardware *grumble grumble* shouldnt have to engineer it for them *grumble*
well damn, way to make my 20GB HDD cry Rockstar.... I don't think he can take WHOLE cities....
@Lazlo: i thought so too until i thought of the lack of a decent sized hdd in my 360. *sigh* choices, choices
GTA: Hong Kong plz
@jayntampa: knew=new ... but, I'm sure you knew that.
Whole new cities? And how many gigs is this DLC going to take up? I don't see it happening at all.
perhaps the new 'cities' are just expansions to the game metro area... any bets on them being named Black hills, Zonkers and Fort Bee?
If the DLC is this large, there's no way Microsoft has permanent ownership of them, or that Sony and Rockstar don't have plans to give the PS3 version some of its own DLC.
I also love how this apparently destroys the PS3. I guess if this DLC does remain exclusive and the PS3 doesn't get any of its own DLC, then that's what, 5 360 exclusives worth getting this year (because you could definitely count a new city as a new game)? Great job!
In other news, I guess that $50 million is being well-spent, assuming this rumor is true.
Are we even sure that this DLC isn't just a timed exclusive like the previous GTA's were for the PS3?
Why do you do this to me Kotaku, the two week wait for the actual title to drop, is hard enough.
Now you throw ideas of new cities to be the DLC into my head and I am giddy with excitement and the possibilities. I don't know if I can take it much longer... Just, wow, I can't even put my mind around that sort of DLC. Even if its only half of your speculation it will be amazing new content. Mmmmhhmm, I need this title pronto.
God the extremes people go to when stories are printed. Relax.
All it would be is a glorified expansion pack to GTA IV, pretty much like Shivering Isles was to Oblivion. And yeah, if it really is a new city, I'd imagine it would be right around that $30 price tag.
And while I'm sure PS3 owners would be upset that they aren't getting it, it's not like this is going to cripple the industry or anything. Geez some of you treat it like an extra city for Grand Theft Auto IV will shake the very foundation of the console war forever. Relax, please.
I seriously can't believe how much people totally over-react on the Internet. These people either A) just act overly dramatic because they don't have to be accountable for what they say, or B) really are this insane, and are the same people who hang out around the cash register at Gamestop for an hour and a half.
All of this stuff? It's not that important.
First off all i can say is WOW if it is true. If this is not true then it would be such a let down. But a nice possible DLC form would be to add on a couple of new districts that are based off of the older GTA's then I could see that happening.
I'm not buying it (the idea, not the game) Rockstar has stated pretty definitively that the DLC will be in the form of more missions to do in Liberty. Doesn't mean I wouldn't want to get it on 360, though...
@ShirtGuyDom: Yea, I'm sure us ps3 people will get totally screwed with our better framerate and more graphical stability.
MMMMM think about it people. Rockstar THEMSELVES has already admitted that GTA IV is SMALLER than San Andreas.
So you're telling me that even though THE ACTUAL GAME is smaller than San Andreas, somehow magically the DLC will be BIGGER than San Andreas and thus BIGGER then the actual, core GTA IV game? Uhhh I don't think so.
Also, looks like this "special" issue of CVG may have been sponsored by Microsoft. Which would explain a lot. Take a look:
[www.playthree.net]
@Godluvsugly:
I love playing pointless speculation!
I doubt the MS payoff would be enough to cover the potential loss in revenue of the development costs of creating an entirely new city and making it a 360 exclusive.
That being said, I'm still getting the PS3 version, but if this rumor should turn out to be true and definitely consider purchasing a 360 along with an extra GTAIV just to get it.
@uppitycracker: It's not an "incomplete game". Add-ons add to a "complete" game.
But building an entirely new city along with all the missions and storyline needed by this fall? Seems pretty fast to me.
I'll file this one under the 'wait and see' rumours.
Hmm, interesting. Wasn't expecting a new city, but it could happen.
Do I think it makes sense? No. They can just go the Vice City/San Andreas way and put out a new game for each city, but built off the GTA IV Engine. If EA gets their hands on Take Two, that can pretty much happen.
Plus, wasn't it mentioned somewhere that the first DLC was 10 hours long or something like that?
Oh well. Have fun with your DLC, 360 dudes. You earned it, so you better buy it.
360 vs PS3 war is done and over folks.
360 wins!
^_^
Interesting though, I wounder why kind of bang MS $120 will buy in exclusive DLC.
@Lazlo: I'm inclined to agree, a whole city worth of downloadable content? I'm sold, I'm so very sold.
@TitillatedOcelot:
Wouldn't be so bad, Shivering Isles hit consoles remember.
Well, if this turns out to be fact then I wouldn't mind paying for this.
Now this is how DLC should be done. (if this turns out to be true)
The only problem we see with this scenario is that new cities can't just be generated with the flip of a switch. They require meticulous, intelligent design so they stream appropriately, and a ton of playtesting to sort the bugs.
.... unless the game is designed from the ground up to accomodate such structure, i.e. there's already a framework in place such that the designer just has to drop in content as its developed.
Which is what we've been led to believe is the case with GTAIV, so the concept of "new cities" -- or at least new areas -- may not be as far-fetched as you're coloring it, guys...
@klashawnd: When they say "smaller," they're talking about the in-game size of the cities, not the out-of-game size in terms of many gb's it takes up on a disc/hard drive.
San Andreas may be a bigger game in terms of city-size, but obviously GTA IV takes up more space on a disc because the texture/graphic detail is higher.
With graphics improvement comes the need for more space on a disc. It doesn't have to do with the actual size of the city in the game.
Morrowind was "bigger" than Oblivion, but do you think Morrowind took up more space on a DVD?
[www.playthree.net]
@exkon: Uh oh, don't rock the boat.
@ParaParaKing: @3xch4ng3: it seems it was pointed out before i posted. as mentioned above, i don't want the constant loading to shred my disc on teh treeshickstee like it already has on mass effect. plus, the only friend i have that owns a current gen console will be getting it for his ps3. b-b-b-ut whole cities! argh...
Love how folks assume truth (on the internet), when it's a rumor. Just because microsoft paid 50 million for dlc, doesn't make this a reasonable conclusion.
$50 million dollars... you think it's a gift from them? They want it back, and they'll get it back from you. The content is coming in the fall, so they have enough time to see how much they'll have to charge to get it, and a significant profit, back.
What you "enjoy your incomplete games" folks don't realize... is that microsoft didn't pay them to not release content on the PS3. They paid them not to release the 360 content on it. The PS3 may get something completely different.
Nothing pisses off fanboy more than someone else getting exclusive content, for a game they bought on another console. The fact that you'll be paying for microsofts "exclusivity" might even sting a little more.
I call bullshit.
