European 360 Sales "More Than Doubled" After Price Cut

That price cut seems to have done the trick. Microsoft are reporting that, in the weeks since they slashed the prices on all three 360 models, the console's sales have doubled. Sorry, "more than doubled". I'd just love to tell you how many consoles that actually equates to, but this being Europe, sales data trackers ChartTrack don't think you need that kind of information, so a "more than doubled" statement is all we're going to get. And while we can assume the console has indeed sold in healthy numbers, without real numbers to back that up, or to show how many it was selling before the cuts (and how many the PS3 and Wii are selling), it's all a bit pointless, isn't it? A celebratory presser entirely devoid of hard sales data follows.

LONDON - Thursday 17th April, 2008- The momentum behind Xbox 360 continues to grow, as Microsoft today announced that European sales have more than doubled in the wake of recent adjustments of the estimated retail price (ERP), solidifying its leadership position as the number one next-generation console in Europe and significantly broadening the console's audience.

"Xbox 360 is truly the next-generation console of choice among consumers, and today's numbers are proof that we are delivering on our commitment to achieve critical mass in Europe," said Chris Lewis, Vice President, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Europe. "The highly competitive ERP, coupled with entertainment content that's appealing to everyone in the home, makes Xbox 360 the ultimate high-definition entertainment choice, and it's clear that we're already seeing this resonate with consumers."

Xbox 360 is the number one next-gen console in EMEA, owning 42% of the market in terms of life-to-date revenue. Xbox 360 continues to enjoy the highest software attach rate of any game console in Europe with more than 7.0 games sold per console (PS3: 3.8; Wii 3.5) after 27 months on the market.

On Friday, 14th March, Microsoft lowered the ERP for its Xbox 360™ family of consoles in Europe. Now with an entry-level ERP of £159.99, Xbox 360 is a video game and entertainment system that is appealing to an even broader audience. Upcoming releases of blockbuster games such as "Grand Theft Auto IV," "Rock Band," "Lego Indiana Jones" and "Ninja Gaiden 2," will continue this momentum and give consumers even more reasons to buy Xbox 360.

  • I don't believe it, and citing "Rock Band" as an upcoming blockbuster is just bad :p

  • @Ragarnok: I'm fairly certain Rock Band hasn't been released in Europe, so it's an upcoming blockbuster for them.

  • 360 FTW!

  • Is this any surprise? Cheaper than a Wii, remember. That's just... insane.

  • If you need revenue and attach rates to demonstrate your success, you're in trouble.
Cold hard unit sales numbers is what counts - as it has always been and should be.

  • Why haven't they released sales figures?

    Double of what?

I wonder how many PS3 units GTA4 shifted with their bundle...would be interesting to see.

  • In other news, Europe will attack SCEE and Konami headquarters putting aside hundreds of years history in order to get their MGO2 beta.

  • @TOWER_JUNKIE:

I think he was referring to the Rock Band pricing debacle.

Regardless, I'm just here to see people argue on behalf of multibilliondollar corporations as if they're friends, saying that company A loves them more than that shitty company B.

It'll all start with an RRoD mention, or maybe that's too creative. We could just go with something along the lines of 'SONY SUCKS' or 'nintendo is for casuals!!!!!' and it's the proverbial pistol shot into the air for hordes upon hordes of loyal consumers to defend businesses instead of seeing pros and cons in all consoles, of realizing that this competition is the best goddamn part of this industry.

Or maybe we'll all just realize the 360 is the best console out right now and move on.

  • Double zero is still zero..

Still, it would appear the 360's "I HAVE EXPLOSIONS IN ALL MY GAMES" attitude isn't doing so great in any country that isn't America, perhaps thats a sign..

  • its doing all right in UK too apparently...@ryivanV2:

  • Doubled from what?

On another note I wonder exactly how they calculate those attach-rate numbers. Because it's no secret non-gamers buy PS3's for the media, mainly BD, functions. They're probably not going to buy many games.

  • Update your map, it still has Yugoslavia on it.

  • Missile lock on Poland.

  • Without any actual figures this doesnt mean anything..Yes,lowering price sells consoles.Life to date revenue should be more if the console has been out before Nintendo/Sony's console, right? It's good they are doing better than expected though.

  • @elevenoverzero: Jeez, we don't even have official XBL over here and now they want to nuke us? Bastards.

  • The attach rate is the most stupid win-argument ever since you can't compare the consoles on that front. 360 sells a lot of games, you have to give them that - good for them. But when they first started using attach rate boasting that theirs is twice as high as Wii's or PS3's they neglected to mention that their console had been on the market for twice the time so having a higher attach rate is the most natural thing in the world and doesn't say much about the console.

If they lead with these attach rate ratios in 2-3 years, then it's reason to boast. Not now.

  • I know lots of people here in the UK that have a 360. Also the attach rate is what is making the system a success. Lots of PS3 owners by 3 games a year. 360 Owners may buy double that.

  • Double sales should put the 360 over the PS3 again (they've been rather close the past year, taking turns being on top, but the blu-ray victory put the PS3 on a clear advantage), but still not reach the Wii... which is probably why they don't post any numbers. Being beaten by Nintendo's "toy" is probably too much for Microsoft to handle.

I really hope Sony responds to MS' price cut soon, since Europe (Scandinavian countries above all), Australia and NZ really, really deserves a more fair pricing. That os for the Wii as well... though seeing how well that sells I doubt that will happen soon.

  • lol just PR spins...
and if it selling more than the other systems they would just tell itinstead of staying only with the"biggest revenue untill now..."
    0_o
u released first u have more revenue until now...
Seems desperate, after a ps3 pricedrop and maybe a wii the 360 says bye and to the Eu after japan

  • Rockband won't be the so called 'blockbuster' if they stick with their current price plan of £180 including game and instruments. That's for sure! Though GTA IV & Ninja Gaiden 2 are must buys.

  • Funny thing is, that the PS3 sales also doubled after the 360 price drop, because it was around easter.

  • This is spin if I've ever read spin. Key thing they leave out is whether they doubled their CONSOLE sales after the price reduction. I suspect they didn't. So they are pimping this notion of doubling ALL sales of all things XBOX across the board. I'm sure they have sold more consoles than before and thus, have sold more software as well. But if the PS3 is still outselling them in total console sales week after week even AFTER the price drop, then their prospects overseas are dwindling. Leaving out any hard numbers only leads me to suspect that the hard numbers sing a different tune.

  • Hey Microsoft, numbers or GTFO

  • I can't believe so many people are making stupid remarks about the attach rate of consoles. This is very important to the likes of Capcom, Rockstar, Ubisoft and so on.

In january 2006 the 360 had an attach rate of 4.3. By the start of 2008 it has risen to 7. For the PS3 the attach rate has risen from around 1 at launch to 3.5.

The fact there is a one year gap between the release of the 360 and PS3/Wii shows that not only is Microsoft in second place on hardware, it is number one in software. With a gigantic fucking gap over the Wii and PS3.

Despite enormous success of Wii 1st party games and being number one in hardware sales. The total number number of games sold on the 360 is over twice as much as the Wii and PS3 together.

It is obvious to most that in terms of consoles sold the 360 will probably be a close 3rd. Although stupid Sony fanboys will use this to claim victory. Developers won't care, they know better.

Unless the hardware gap between the 3 machines can negate the number of games sold per console, the 360 will continue to have the best games and the largest and most diverse software catologue available.

  • These kind of reports are prime bait for fanboys of all different consoles.

As for which console is "winning" - no idea - but out of everyone I know there's 1 person with a PS3, 4 or 5 with a Wii and about 10-12 with an Xbox 360 (and I don't mean people on my XBL friends list!)

Oh, and quite a few people have PS3s and Xbox 360s on their wish-list, but nobody I know wants a Wii who doesn't already have one.

  • I'm so jerking it to fanboy squabbles right now.

  • @El-Suave: If I was a publisher the higher attach rate would definitely sway me towards developing for the 360 rather than PS3 if I could only choose one. And it's not just because the console has been out longer, the attach rate has been high since launch and multi-platform games consistently sell more on the 360 than on other platforms. Considering that attach rate is going to keep attracting developers to the 360 I would say it is a pretty good "win-argument" considering it will keep the system flush with new games for the next few years.

  • knowing what they're gaining/ losing from the reduced sales prices would be pretty entertaining to know too, if you're pretty sad- like myself.

  • So they doubled their sales, but are still getting outsold by the Wii and PS3 in Europe. Impressive...

  • Believable

  • The 360 doubling numbers makes things interesting. Oh, sweet joy, I can't wait for more PS3 v. 360 E-chest thumping.

With GTA5:prologue selling well over a million copies shortly after launch in Europe, I can't help but think that at least some of those people were new PS3 owners. Those are good numbers for a "demo", as some people call it. We won't find out about March and April for a while, though. :(

  • @Kingsgoon: How do you know they're being outsold by PS3? You fanboys are funny...

  • @Kingsgoon: I would doubt they get beaten by the PS3. I know that even before the price drop, the PS3 could not compete with 360 sales in Sweden and probably the rest of scandinavia, and I've hear reports of UK sales being solid for the 360 as well compared to the PS3. Here in Sweden, the 360 sells way more than the PS3, especially after the price drop which helps putting even the 20GB model close to half the price of the PS3 that is overpriced compared to all other consoles in Scandinava (with an 12.5% extra fee compared to the rest of Europe that just can't be explained). While the 360 sells poor in the mediterranean areas, Northern Euroe has a pretty strong 360 foothold... son on average, this wold put them between the PS3 and Wii... and as said before, failing to reach the Wii is probably the largest reason to not disclose sales numbers.

  • @flukielukie:

    Is that true?
I bought 3 times that already this year

  • In terms of the PS3, how many Blu-ray movies are being sold strictly to PS3 owners? Since the PS3 is the leading Blu-ray player, one could surmise that the majority of Blu-ray discs are being sold to PS3 owners, right?

With this in mind... I can hear the spin from Sony now.

"The PS3 DOUBLED their sales of ALL entertainment property pertaining to the PS3. The PS3 is the number one high definition next-gen media and gaming console in the world!"

See how easy it is to spin things your way?

  • @The Whaleman:
The only thing I could find is that Sony is poised to overtake the 360 in all Pal territories by the summer and for a period of time they were outselling them 3:1.What can you believe??

But,nothing concrete on actual numbers.I would like to see what the actual sales and what it is showing.I think it's far far closer than what you'll hear.

Sony and MS/Nintendo will continue to compete in Europe and NA.It's over for MS in Japan,so that has Nintendo and Sony there..No surprise really.

Then it's NA where no doubt MS has a nice lead and over course Nintendos casual gaming juggernaut.Sony should make a very strong showing 3rd Qtr with their nice selection of titles/features coming.Looks much stronger for Sony than MS that time of the year. We'll see.

  • @Wizzard: Not cheaper than the Wii the same price. Which means if the Wii's are out and Jimmy C wants one of them Wii's he'll have to make do with the 360 arcade....
and then he'll cry for a long while

  • @Vistrix: Being an European all my lfie (true!), when questionign them about this, they just keep teellings "Were using the Jack Nickolson Clause"

Thats right, we europeans just "can't handle the truth!". It's very exciting when leaked numbers show up around the web.

  • @enewtabie: I don't doubt that the PS3 will overtake the 360 soon enough... as I said, the Blu-Ray win really gave them an advantage, and in the mediterranean areas they have probably sold 3:1 since launch. But if the 360 sales really went up now, the European victory of the PS3 will probably be delayed a bit. Unless Sony does an equal price drop and then we'll see them past the 360 before summer is over.

However, the beautiful thing about these "statistics" is that if you're not precise, you're not lying.. so stating 3:1 sales in PAL regions could mean Italy alone (since you're not saying all PAL regions combined). In the same manner, MS could be talking about UK, German and Scandinavian sales alone, since they're all European sales... just not all European sales.

Europe is a large and diverse area.. and in places like Sweden where the PS3 is overpriced beyond sane measurements (only to be topped by the upcoming Rock Band release) I honestly only know one person for sure that owns a PS3, and an insane amount of Xbox 360s and a fair amount of Wiis. I do know a fair number of people wanting to buy a PS3 though... including myself... but Sony has to drop their 12.5% unexplainable scandinavian fee first. I could honestly get it for 25% less if I imported it from the UK... but then I'd be screwed on warranties.

  • Sony has shaved enough costs of Ps3 production to drop the price 50US and still break even. If they lower the price 100US together with this year games, Ps3 could even surpass the 360 in cumulative sales.

  • @excel_excel: Cheaper than the Wii. The 360 Arcade is €199/£159 while the Wii is €249/€£179.

  • It would be more significant if they said 'outselling PS3' but even then I'm sure most of the 360 sales have came from the UK anyway.

  • what about those "shortages"... none of this matters though. MGS4 anyone?

  • @Xerious:

What does MGS4 have to do with anything in this thread?

  • Image of okenny :) okenny :) at 07:33 AM on 04/17/08 *

@ParaParaKing: I'm not a big fan of referencing VGChartz The 360 seems to have staved of the ground it was loosing to the PS3 with the Price Drop. Lets not forget one of the biggest reasons for loyalty to the Playstation brand in the EU was due to it's long history of being affordable in addition to good games. Microsoft just has to fit that bill better for a longer time to become just as relevant.

  • I can predict Sony's respond to this already and it starts with three letters

    M G S

    ring a bell??

  • It's hard to say with no numbers and no data we can't believe anyone.
