When the Wii finally launches in Korea next week, one of the games available will be Zack & Wiki. How do you sell a game like Zack & Wiki to the Korean market? With mousepads. Oh, and the promise of riches. Everyone who preorders the game will get two bits of merch: a mousepad and a small treasure chest filled with treasure-shaped candy. Except not all the chests contain candy. One hundred of them will contain a pearl necklace. A real, pearl necklace. This would be the part where I'd say I wished we could have gotten pearl necklaces with our preorders, but...hrm. I won't.

Yes, you would've looked stunning with your Zack and Wiki pre-order pearl necklace, Luke. And so would I. *sniff*
i still need to play this game.
but now i don't see it being worth my time without that necklace...
Must. Stave. Off. Obvious. Pearl. Necklace. Joke.
That was tough but I managed it, phew!
@Dannon: Hey, if I can do it, you lot can do it :)
I just want that damn treasure chest. Now THAT is cool.
@Luke Plunkett: As I was reading your article I was on the edge of my seat waiting for it but it never came
@Dannon: Gotta keep things CLASSY
Aaah, so unfair. I bought it when it came out, where's my free stuff :(
I'm guessing it's Capcom giving away the goodies. Or am I just being cynical because being in Europe I'm just used to Nintendo hating us.
An anagram of "Zack and Wiki" is "Wack Nazi Kid."
And I thought that the Okami preorder was cool...
Holy shite.
Great, they can use those mousepads when they're playing Starcraft.
Well, someone had to say it.
Hey i would love a pearl necklace. It would go well with my pink tutu and pink handbag.
@HateFate: So is Wack and Ziki. Albeit a less impressive anagram, but...shut up.
They have to go overboard to compete with PC Gaming in Korea. >.>
I guess them complaining about the game not doing well was a sham if they can afford this kind of stint.
haha clever stint.
Korean people love free shit.
I'm sure we could arrange one of these pearl necklaces for you Luke, if you want one so bad. Us commenters are nice like that! :P
@aelfin: ..........eeww.
@HateFate: Why didn't Yathzee pick up on that!
Sweet. Most likely everyone will get one pearl seeing how I never even knew more than 100 wii was sold in Korea.
Jewelry or not a treasure chest full of candy is awesome. I wouldn't know whether to eat it or not though.
@Clarke: I agree, I'm not especially concerned with whether or not I get a nice piece of jewelry with my video game, but whether or not I get some candy, because honestly, how can we go wrong with candy?
Either way as far as the game goes, I think the Zero Punctuation review of it was probably the best I read anywhere: [www.escapistmagazine.com]
The game isn't exactly my cup of tea, but the promise of a treasure chest full of candy and that very well could have been the possibility that sealed me owning, at least for a little while, this game.
Not read, but saw, foolish me.
That's not going overboard, really. This was an incredibly subtle game everywhere in the world and it is incredibly good too.
@juliopalio: Maybe it's an experiment - after everyone whined about how they didn't bother marketing it, they're making sure to make a proper effort in at least one territory and see if it helps.
Incidentally I don't think Capcom ever complained about Z&W sales - just folks like us. If I remember rightly, Capcom even confirmed a future sequel. It actually sold okay, just not what it deserves.
And yes the game was awesome, I'll be getting the sequel for sure. (Though um, I'm not going to fart around finding all the hidden treasure, thanks.)
I'll be honest, without some recommendations from here amongs a few other places I would have never tried this game. It's a shame it wasn't pushed more, it's not only interesting, funny, clever, and colorful but also makes use of the Wii controller like I thought more games would. In fact, the only thing I don't like about Zack and Wiki is the damn bell playing song/game. It's just annoying to me and I hate the guys "Noooo!" when you mess up. This game should have been pushed to the front of the Wii.
@MJDeviant:
Ditto. I was shocked when I finally bought it at how beautiful and fun it was. (Then again, multiple gaming sites had been begging everyone to check it out.) Compared to the utter trash that most "unknown" Wii games turn out to be, well, it's just a crime that it never really breached the pop culture barrier.
Even thought I bought it after Galaxy, I thought it was the best game on the Wii. It harkens back to the days of Loom...
If only they did that in America...
I didn't know Ron Jeremy was in Korea this month.
