Sit down folks, Square Enix has announced a new mobile cell phone game called ELLARK. It's a "free online RPG" and is launching in Japan this June on all three major Japanese carriers. Not many details, but we're betting nice hairdos are involved.

I love Square Enix titles, but I must assert that they new some fresh new concepts.. Character's are so homegenuous (sans The World Ends with You).. Stories are usually quite cliched (than again, what Japanese RPG's aren't). I have faith in this company to produce quality titles, but I think come next-generation, they need a new future roadmap to keep us veteran gamers interests. Final Fantasy XX might just not do it anymore.. But I could be wrong. After all, it's worked on me so many (many many) times before.
Wonder how similar it'll be to FFXI, since that is Square Enix's only other MMO endeavor?
I feel like I'm forgetting one...
they have been pretty quiet this year...whatever they got coming will be big.
No more mobile games SE for the love of god.
If you want to make $$$ put it on one of the handhelds instead.
@adventchild08: I'd reckon that any made on a cell phone wouldn't be to great. Certainly there are good time killers on a phone, but I've yet to have played anything close to memorable or what I'd deem very good. I think of cell-phone games as more novelty than anything else.. Don't want to knock on the medium, but the platform itself (being a cellular phone) really bogs down the experience. Controls (not withstanding other areas as well) are comprimised.
I do recall Sega making a great online RPG for the N-GAGE (based on reviews).. Can't recall the name on top of my head, but it certainly looked promising. Hopefully this can be a change of things, but something about that "free to play" feature has me smelling some foul.
Until they re-title it "Final Fantasy Wanderers: Ellark", this thing doesn't even show up on this hardcore gamer's radar!
("Wanderers" -- get it? You play the game on the go. Man, I should get a job in marketing.)
As expected of Squaresoft...a kikass logo. I wanna play this just cuz of that logo design.
I heard mobile game sell pretty well.
This is not cool. A cell phone is not an appreciable media.
MMObile. Spend all your time on the phone without actually talking to anyone.
@Witzbold: agreed.
and howabout that game called um........ FFXIII? let's hear about that one please. thx
@108: It's not really going to be on the screen until we hear about a US release. I know Japanese phones are all advanced, but I'm packing a pretty damned nice smartphone. SHOW US SOME LOVE!
Wow, "New Square Enix Mobile Game, Role Playing Involved" may be the funniest title ive ever seen.
@Erwos: Square Enix HATE US, but thats okay cause my barely able to display colour mobile couldn't play this....*sniff*
And Square Enix publishes another mobile title, which will either pass under most gamer's radars, or will elicit numerous "Square Enix would make so much more money if they released this for the DS!!"
I don't have the details on Square's mobile sales, but I do know that there are more DoCoMo iMode-ready subscribers in Japan than there are DS users worldwide...
@Vorpal: Fantasy Earth with by Squeeny too
@黒天使: damn it : was*
Okay, reading/translating the story... Actually has a pretty awesome premise, IMO.
Life across the world began to cease, and a massive airship, the "Ark", was modeled in the image of an ancient dragon... and, basically, the MMORPG is set atop this indescribably massive airship.
Where have these been? The RPG element on the mobile phone seems like a no brainer. You have very limited controls on the phone. Directionals and a few buttons. This lends it self very well to your standard RPG.
We're seeing a retro revival with XBLA, PSN and the Wii, (not to mention entire games on the DS. ) A low tech top down RPG with 2d graphics would be perfect given the phone's limits and short game life. An
I always thought role playing is almost none existent in Square Enix games...
I'm loving the (seemingly true) character design.
Anything without cooker-cutter Nomura design is fine with me though.
