Fans of Afro Samurai have a treat headed their way in the form of a game based on the show about a renegade African american Samurai seeking revenge on the killers of his father. Armed with his father's trusty katana, he goes forth to slice and dice the evil doers.
In the build that I saw, the slicing and dicing was really the focus du jour. The game utilizes a dynamic cutting system that does away with the pre rendered cutting animations of past games. Wherever you cut your enemy, that's exactly where the body part gets lopped off. And there were plenty of body parts flying around believe you me.
The game itself was gorgeous to look at. The art style was an amazing homage to dark anime and manga. The textures were gorgeous and at times looked almost photographic with the exception of the tight, thin lines outlining every object and character. Close up looks at the characters showed a beautiful texturing that mimics the scratchy pen and ink line style of many mangas. The character's skin also had a texture applied that almost made them look like they were carved from a fine grain wood. Sometimes during certain scenes, the image would go split screen, showing approaching enemies and Afro Samurai at the same time in separate sections, adding to the overall anime/manga style of the graphics
Seeing as we just watched the fellow roam through a few of the levels laying waste to the many enemies, it was hard to get a real handle on the gameplay or running story. If the ending gameplay and story matches up to the beauty of the graphic treatment, Afro Samurai will be a game both fans and non-fans of the show will really enjoy when it hits sometime this fall.

Comments
Why are there no comments on this yet? This is awesome news, heathens.
Thats great, but is this based on the cartoon or a whole new story? Cause Afro's mini season was very VERY short.
This will be a day one buy for me. Hands down end of subject. Even if game play SUCKS, the screens look good enough to warrant a buy from me. Afro Samurai freaking rocks.
@Otacon91: Well he is going after the Number 1 headband so I'm guessing it's based off of the original story line.
"African American"?
Afro was American?
I love Afro Samurai. Can't wait for this game to come out, it looks awesome.
@Antlio:
Afro was Samuel Jacksonican
@SkutSkut:
because Flynn is just churning out his reports and news like this is getting buried.
@SkutSkut: It is indeed awesome.
sounds great, i have the dvd box set here and love the look, if the game comes close to that it could be really cool.
This and Ninja Gaiden will be blood heaven.
but will it be voiced by Sam Jackson?
This looks awesome. The footage I have seen of it looks pretty good too. I just hope they don't mess it up, as I liked the series quite a bit, even though it was short lived.
This does look really good, but I fera a shallow rental only title.
I would love for it to be more than that and will hold out a secret hope for such.
Also, if I can play as Geno, then fuck yes. Vengeance-fueled, Cyborg, Teddy Bear, Samurai FTMFW!
I hope it's better than the Samurai Champloo game..
*sits in a corner and weeps because there will never be a good Champloo game :(*
@Dauragon C. Mikado: Dont feel too bad, they eventually made a desent Naruto game now, im sure you will have your day as well.
@Balance_In_Life (PSN):
From what I read on Gamespot this game is based on the anime but will have new content. From the scene shots, hopefully this game'll be better then the Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and a few other really good anime series that ended up being crap in game form.
This looks cool! Real time body part removal FTW!
If all the original voice actors are in it too...I'm there
hell yea!
Absolutely loved the movies..hope the game is just as good!
wish they word "afro" was replaced by "way of the" and the entire followed by a "3" because i really want Way of the Samurai 3 for ps3 ='(
It was a terrible anime, and I'm sure the game will be just as good.
Yeah I said it!
I've never seen the show, but based on these images, I think it looks boss.
he's not African-American, but African-Japanese.
:)
I have never watched the anime or read the manga. I really do love games that involve sword play. This game looks great and i will pick it up if it is on the PS3.
Not a big fan of anime or manga, but if Samuel L. Jackson voices the main dude, it's a win for me.
LEAAVE AFFRROOO NINJA ALOOOONEE!!!
@TheCheese33: Thing is, Afro Samurai almost never says anything. The most you hear out of Samuel L is from Ninja Ninja, who is the annoying 'why won't someone kill him already?!' sidekick.
I liked it when Spike showed it in movie form, but not enough to excited over the game.
so...im guessing theres no wii version?
want on wii... :facesad:
Looks better than SFIV
This game looks beautiful, hopefully the gameplay holds up just as well. Only saw the first ep of the series myself, I thought it was decent, at the least it also looked awesome.
@pandafresh: I'm with ya on that one. The game they made after the second apparently sucked although it sounded cool (a samurai the old west, deflecting bullets with his sword). The problem is those games, despite doing ridiculously well in Japan, don't do well in America. And in my opinion they need to expand on the gameplay... which is already awesome, especially considering the billion swords available.
holy beautiful screens!
Woah. And I thought I was pretty much done being impressed with graphics.
I guess I'm not on a technical level, but that style is something else!
Man, these guys need to buy the Samurai Champloo so we can do some Mugen style breakdancing/ninja sword fighting.
Wow - this looks....impressive. Man, I'm loving this whole 'next gen thing'
please please PLEASE let the game play be good ('O_o )
@biznatch: Oh btw, there is a Samurai champloo game, available for the PS2, unfortunately I hear it's a bit sub-standard
Looks pretty nice, I must say. The graphics aren't as smooth as that new Naruto game, unfourtunately, but what it lacks in sheer polygons, it makes up for with style.
@Shin-Kaiser: The beats are terrible, the graphics are mediocre, and they got bad soundalikes to replace the anime's voice actors. Don't even look up videos of it on Youtube.
Also, that isn't a wood carving texture. It's the manga shading style.
Wow I cant they are actually putting effort into this. That makes me so happy!
The graphics are looking great. The show is great and i hope the game lives up and surpasses it. I can't wait for this game.
