Sony's new PlayStation Store launched this week with a few hiccups like broken images and long load times. And while all of us expect the service to smooth out soon, Sony has addressed the issues on their forums.
We are aware that many of you have experienced delays whilst the PS Store's thumbnail icons are being downloaded. This is a temporary consequence of a new system implementation and high global traffic levels, and will be resolved within the next few days.I think the big mistake was not including the basic thumbnails in the firmware update, forcing users to download them in real time ala any normal web page getting slammed. But I think I can speak for everyone here when I say, broken or not, it's still loads better than the old store.

Slow loading times. Better store look. I guess you can't have all the things you want.
either way i love the new style!
now about them movies! :D
I'm just glad that O takes you back to the previous screen instead of trying to close the store.
Haven't had any problems myself.
Yeah, the new store kicks the shit out of the web based one. So much better. And yeah, how about those movies!
But I think I can speak for everyone here when I say, broken or not, it's still loads better than the old store.
Ain't that the truth.
New store is awesome, much more intuitive.
Even though it was a bit slow, it's so much better than the old one that I can forgive them for that.
And when this get fixed, it'll be even better !! Looks better and way much easier to navigate.
Hehe I agree----hiccups don't change the fact this store rules! Can't wait for more stuff--rather have PSN cards than movies tho hehe---so much to download so little funds :-(
It's slow?
I like it and it doesn't seem that slow on my connection
@male roof blower: Yeah, that was a serious annoyance. Glad they changed that!
@male roof blower: A frickin MEN.
New store works great!
It's not the store that's slow, it's certain thumbnails that take forever to load.
That said, I love the new store to death. The old one was hideously annoying compared to this one.
I don't think this is as big as a problem as people are making it out to be. Just some out-of-the-gate hitches is all. I mean, the store is so fast and seamless now, it's really nothing to complain about. I'm sure past this week, they'll have it all ironed out.
They better be studying what's happening. just imagine how it will look like every thursday if something big drops ;(
They could not incorporate all the icons. Theres hundreds, and more to be added all the time. The store is part of the firmware, not the content.
agreed mark. LOADS better. i gave this a run through late last night and was full of glee (despite the issues, which i consider minor)
I logged in last night and it was already very zippy. A page of icons loads in about 1-2 seconds. I am sure by tomorrow and this weekend, it will be nearly instnat.
The speed of the image loading for me has been dreadful and I'm on 20mb connection. Hopefully it'll be sorted soon.
Generally the new store is really impressive from a usability and design standpoint. I doubted Sony's ability to get their act together in a previous comment. Congratulations to Sony for making a silk purse out of a sow's ear and creating a viable competitor to XB Marketplace.
I just really wish they'd get more content up on the PAL store...
"I think the big mistake was not including the basic thumbnails in the firmware update, forcing users to download them in real time ala any normal web page getting slammed."
so what? a firmware update every week to add new pictures haha
the icons load insanely slow for me. the interface is really speed, and my downloads are relatively speedy, but late last night, the icons were taking over a minute to load all of them on a single page. i could jump around and read the descriptions, but no icon images for a good while.
I'm glad they are resolving this soon. I can't see myself hanging around for 10 minutes to see what new games I should buy, I'll just go elsewhere. This could mean a lot less traffic and purchases from the store if it persists more than a few days.
it's not that bad for me. maybe it's just the volume of people on at once. i know i checked the store a few times because thought about looking for something just to see how much easier it is.
tomorrow is new warhawk stuff. sweet.
One big thing they could do to improve the speed is to cache the background for the icons so that if you go to another section (e.g. Video, Demos) you aren't loading a completely different instance of the same icon. Just slap the appropriate packaging on it (the overlay of "Demo", "Video", "Psp") and you've shaved seconds off of your time right there.
Shit, I can live with it, for the money we pay for it, it's a bargain.
My favourite thing is definately the ability to use red circle as a back button. Funny how the little things please us so much.
The icon images load slowly, not the content itself. You can still scroll through the store and read the description of the content a la Xbox Live. Plus afterwards the images save to the systems cache. We'll have to see how the store holds up tomorrow but as of now it's pretty damned solid.
yeah icons loaded slowly for me last night but meh, i can still move the cursor over top of the icon and read what it's for, so no big deal
but yes way better than the old store
now for the rockband store to update with missed tracks and let's hope they improved the rockshop/ps3 store annoyance, i hated having to buy one track at a time and keep going back to get another, they should just let you put it in your cart till you're done shopping
yes, the New Playstation Store kicks ass. and a HUGE improvement from the last (read: lame) model.
Problems you say, Tomfoolery I say!
I was even able to redownload the Cash Guns Chaos demo from my download history list! The demo disappeared from the store some time ago lol, and I had reformatted my system.
I can't see why they can't cache the icons between sessions in the store. It's not as though they are particularly big or likely to change much.
Sooooo much better now on navigating back/out/around.
Now, where are the CoD4 maps?
By the time IW releases them, I'll be up to no good on GTA4...
@JimmyHACK: I do believe by "basic icons" he's referring to the "Racing", "Adventure", "Family" type icons, which I fully agree should have been part of the update itself.
Imagine the extra load those silly icons are adding to their servers - say there are about 10 of them, multiplied by a couple of thousand people downloading them at any one time - bandwidth and resources much better spent on actual useful information.
love the new store! i have no problem waiting for them to iron out some of the loading flaws! either way it's smoother, better looking, and much easier to navigate Good job Sony, and THANKS!
then again the store was supposed to launch tomm. so i would guess by the end of the week they will iron out all the little kinks. i'll prob download it tomm along with mgo beta. and all the new goodies on psn store [^_^]
It's really slick and nice, the navigating and all. But without icons that load fast enough, it's pretty much useless and a pain.
So with that out of the way, the store should be superb. Better than expected.
Well, the icon thing is the only issue I have with the store. What I would like is for it to download all icons it uses on your HDD. They mustn't take up much space, so why not? Then, when there's new updates, download those in real time but keep them in the HDD while still not taking enough space. That would be amazing as then, the icons would load instantly. Anyway, the info after you scroll is still given, so it's not impossible to navigate. I agree, it still beats the hell out of the old store.
Still no simple "because our content servers are in Japan" answer?
I was a bit dissapointed to see the slow tumbnails, but really (for me at least) it is pretty much just as fast as the XBLM, except with XBLM you can't even read the descriptions until it finishes loading.
@sUKi:
like thursday, metal gear online beta? lol.. uh oh >_<
@Albanian_Killa: That's actually a great idea. There is no reason they shouldn't be caching the thumbnails on each PS3. It would definitely speed up loading, both in that you are not pulling down images and they are saving bandwidth by not having to have every person pull down the same images every time they visit the store or hit new areas.
If they keep updating the store only once a week, most people will visit it that very day and they should ALWAYS experience slow speeds, shouldn't they?
@stargateheaven: Metal Gear Online Beta is not on the PSN store. You would know this if you were in the Beta. You get the Beta outside of the store.
The issues weren't really bad last night except for later on when I kept seeing connection timed out,but this is to be expected with a new store rollout.Tomorrow is going to be bad too unfortunately.
@jackal888:
It will be on the Pal store tomorrow..
@stargateheaven:
Actually you can go get it right now, I did, took bout 2 hours.
The new store is far better but I think the generic icons and perhaps even the most popular items should be permanently cached once they are downloaded. There also needs to be some indicator to say an icon is being downloaded rather than just leaving it blank.
The EU store also needs to be better organised such as have an A-Z index. This isn't a fault of the UI since the US store manages it. I wonder if it has something to with localization - things like A-Z directory would have to be correctly sorted in each locale for the EU.
@DrXym:
Very true!
internet speed is far better in some parts asia, for us we get lozzy speeds.

@Wolf_Dog:
35% in 6 mins...hehe
@El-Suave:
Yeah,that's not going to change..It's still going to be Thursdays,but it'll get tuned up pretty quick I imagine
@SigmundTheSeaMonster:
Doubt it's going to be this week.
Hmm, I think the new store is pretty nifty. I'm sure in time it will become more stable. It's also a good thing that they're releasing those cards soon.
Seems like they're really aiming to improve their online features within the next few months. I'm all for it.
