Back in February, Id Software and IGA announced Quake Live, a browser-based 'freemium' multiplayer version of the classic shooter. Now that they've wet our whistles with a couple of teaser screenshots, their ready to get our hands dirty. Quakelive.com is now accepting email addresses for the upcoming beta test of the game. Remember folks, beta testing isn't all fun and games.
Beta testers are given early access to the QUAKE LIVE website and game, and will help us test all of the game's features and functionality while offering feedback and suggestions.Exactly. So if you get accepted into the beta, remember to keep a pad and paper next to you at all times so you can write down your helpful comments for the developers. You're just going to have fun shooting people, aren't you? Me too.

Browser based spawn camping, I can't wait.
This is not going to be good for my work productivity.
They've had this beta up for almost 2 months now...
Here's a suggestion: Better character design
Lol, a web based FPS of a classic. How brilliant is this! Man, I'm not going to get any work done with this in the back of my head. Awesomness
@HibikiRush: Agreed, this isn't anything new.
Hell yes! Still play Action Quake 2 and Rocket Arena 3 regularly.
Well not the beta but the sign up is what I meant. Anyway I signed up with 2 different emails and haven't heard anything back. I actually didn't know this was browser-based until now though. We'll see how it is. I did love Quake 3 even though my main experience with it was on Dreamcast...
This looks like fun, sign me up!
Might not be new but I was not aware of it. So thanks Mike !
And Kotaku is not only meant as a way to get the freshest news. That's why I am using it.
If it's anything remotely like Quakeworld, yay. But I don't have my hopes up.
Bring in Quake1 models/etc and we have a winner
@spartansCreed: Usually I wouldn't look at this TOO much, but you've gotta point. That character really looks ugly and out of place.
Hells to the yeah.
No love for Visor on this crowd, I see...

Dont mind me, I always play the Doom Marine...
I don't know how many beta testers actually jot down little issues, but they usually do end up getting reported because it is, in some way, pissing somebody off. Things like exploits are usually quickly discovered because someone takes advantage of them and someone else reports them. And that's how I believe bugs are found in beta! :P
@HibikiRush: This is Kotaku.
Will the PS3 or Wii Browser support it I wonder... most likely not.
Still awesome. Will make long lecture classes more interesting.
This is great news!. Quake live and Tribe Browser; al la Fallen Empires.
Pick your poison for work
Here's a bit of trivia for everyone. Avatar (AKA Macky Mccandlish) of Irrational Games got his start with Rocket Arena and Quake Map packs included in PC Gamer Magazine.
Hooray for College friends.
the character looks fine - it's quake. perhaps you've never played a quake game before?
I believe the community features are all browser based and the game is launched from there. There was talk of being able to play in a browser window, but for all intents and purposes the game will download and run like any other exe, not java/flash-esque platform independant.
I think initial support is for Mac/PC, given id's history that means Linux too.
Game is based on Quake 3 and they're not looking to make many drastic changes from that in either engine capability or game design.
Some leaked vid and pics appear to be genuine and show the stock Q3 maps are being tweaked to some degree.
For all those who've signed up already or are now. The beta hasn't started yet so don't worry you've not heard anything. There has however been a private beta going on for some months. id has said they need to meet some milestones before they open up the wider beta phase but that hopefully won't be much longer now.
There are several threads running over at [www.esreality.com] if you want more information, id's SyncError and Method post updates and questions there.
I can see it now...
"Deer ID,
The gaym coud us otto-aming
Timmy, age 21 (reely!)."
Linux plz? I hate having to reboot into Windows for something non-essential...
What's the difference between this and playing Quake 3: Arena? Someone educate me.
Are there going to be global stats tracking or something?
I get getting to play anywhere off a browser, but don't you still need a good video card?
@DataScream: Have you even heard of Quake before?
omg i used to play this among others like DOOM when i was younger.!
@ceokhan: Damn I am old. Doom came out when I was 7, Tribes hit when I was in Highschool.
It boggles me when I ask people their birthday and its in the 90's now.
Any word on browser support? I'll run it in Firefox if I have to, but I wonder if it will support IE, FF, and Safari or just FF, etc.
Looks like a fun diversion while we wait for that first ID Tech 5 game though ;)
@Fyren:
Pshh, youngster. I was like 11 when Doom was released.
@Maximus9: This will be free, I'm pretty sure. In game advertising, but free. I believe that's the major difference, that and it being web based although now after reading some comments not sure if it'll be a separate exe or not. I'm still holding out hope for it being all in a browser.
@Fyren:
Doom came out when I was 15. And Tribes came out when I was 22. Christ and you were 7 in 1993? Now I know I am old. Thanks!
So Mike, This the new game to kill work productivity instead of Duel Mail?
Is there not already a java based quake 2? I believe I've played it... it ran like sexy butter on the shittyist computer I could find. I don't see why it can't be completely browser based.
I signed up for this a while ago, never heard back from them. Oh and they ran an ad about this in the Montreal subway... 2 months ago.
I had my fill of Quake 3 by early 2000, thanks.
I wonder if this is using the new Java 6 beta with hardware (DirectX) support...I guess that wouldn't make it too fast on OSX, though.
From [java.sun.com] :
Hardware acceleration support: Java SE 6 Update 10 Beta introduces a fully hardware accelerated graphics pipeline based on the Microsoft Direct3D 9 API, translating into improved rendering of Swing applications which rely on translucency, gradients, arbitrary transformations, and other more advanced 2D operations.
Ok, anyone know if this is going to be run wholly in browser, or if this is going to be single platform...
