PS3 Siren Game Confirmed Early

Yup, just like we and pretty much everyone else thought, that blood red countdown clock was counting down to a PS3 Siren game. The upcoming issue of Japanese game magazine Famitsu confirms it. Dubbed Siren New Translation, the PLAYSTATION 3 survival horror title is currently 90 percent done and apparently a reworking of the first game. It will go on sale this summer on July 24th, and a demo will be released on April 24th. There's still 45 hours left on the blood red clock. So... Not much of a countdown, huh?

  • Yes. this is good. I needs more current-gen survival horror, even if i did sleep on the last game.

Yawning so hard my jaw is about to detach, over here.

The dialog will probably be 75% text, like with Ryu ga gotoku.

"There's still 45 hours left on the blood red clock. So... Not much of a countdown, huh?"

That's because Famitsu goes on sale on Friday, Bashcraft.

And sommmmme people get it on Wednesday. The special people.

Ahh, sweet Famitsu! It's so thick this week I could take a delicious bite of it!

  • Drop us a line when someone over at Tecmo hints at Fatal Frame for PS3. Thus will my knickers be properly bunched.

  • The countdown might be for another Siren game?

or I could just be pulling it out of my ass.

  • @108:
Yep, yep! That I know, that I know. Was being snide.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 02:14 AM on 04/16/08 *

@108: I had thought that the first Siren everything was pretty much voice?

I own the game but dont remember too well lol.

All I remember was there was a lot of VA in it.

@TheIrishNinja: Condemned 2's always available in the meantime. Just sayin', is all. ;-)

  • Every time I see that red Siren box sitting on the used game shelf for the PS2, I wonder if it would be worth trying.

  • Sounds pretty awesome to me, Its kinda hard to judge by those screens, but it looks at least "good" graphically.

Im ready for my horror fix :). Bring ze game to Europe Sony!

  • There are no surprises in the interwebs!

  • Image of Cchrist Cchrist at 02:21 AM on 04/16/08 *

I've never heard of this title before. How did the original play?

  • Man am I glad the stage for the story will be at the same place as part 1 and 2.
From the scan it says the game is not a "remake" or a "sequel", but a retelling of the events of part one coming from American's point of view.
Sounds promising and I'm totally importing this! =)

    @108:
All cut scenes in part 1 and 2 have full voice, so I don't see why this will be any different. Even in game there was only full voice when exchanging speeches, of short dialogs between characters and the moaning of the shibito's.

There is reading involved and it's part of the fun for the game as you collect old articles and tape & video recordings (these have full voice playbacks) and try to figure out WTF was actually going on.

  • @Sloopydrew: stoopid gamefly made me return it the other week, or id still be on it. but yes, good point sir, that's a solid one.

i just like having another option, what with alone in the dark delayed and no real concrete dates on SH5/RE5, you know?

  • @TheIrishNinja:

Whats a survival horrorist to do in times like these, non?

Seriously, what am I to do. Condemned 2 is the only scary game to come to mind thats been released in the last little while. We need a new Fear Effect or Fatal Frame or something.

  • Yeah I got this dvd from Japan called Siren with Sora Aoi. Hope this is better. Story was crap on the 'movie'

  • @Komrade_Kayce: never played a Fear Effect, were they good? and yeah, id love it but i wonder if id be brave enough for a Fatal Frame on 360/PS3. I still cant finish part 2, heh.

  • @Darcii:
I saw the Siren movie too and it wasn't that good since it really had nothing to do with the game, only the basic premise.
I didn't see Aoi Sora in the movie though, can't believe I'd miss her O_O
So is that a Porn version of Siren then? Guess I'll have to hunt that down too =)

@TheIrishNinja: Oh, trust me -- I'm with you 100%. I'm more forgiving toward survival horror games than any other. And while waiting for my Alone in the Dark/Silent Hill/Resident Evil fix, I'll settle for just about anything. I didn't even know you had Condemned 2. I haven't been on the 360 for a while.

  • Image of ShaggE ShaggE at 02:40 AM on 04/16/08 *

@TheIrishNinja: They *made* you return it? That's odd, they've never done that to me.

Speaking of GameFly/survival horror games, how good are Fatal Frame 1 and 2? I'm thinking about putting them in my queue, but only if they are genuinely scary.

  • @TheIrishNinja:

If you can find copies of FE 1 and 2 for the PS1 in a bin somewhere, hop on em. Because they used Cell Shading, they've aged pretty well with todays modern graphics.

I dont really know how to describe Fear Effect. They were pretty unique games. Multiple endings, one 'main' character but you switch characters based on plot points in the story... and a lot of asian devil/spirit mythology mixed in. Like the really fucked parts of mythology. Prostitutes with demon spirits cannibalizing people, your best friend is sacrificed, the guy you are working for turns out to be the devil sewing chaos on earth, you're travelling to hell and burning paper dolls to stay alive...

Yeah, see. Not really sure how to describe it. Kind of starts out as your typical third person solid snake female lead character infiltrate government building game, but quickly decends into the realm of madness. Pretty edgy stuff for the PS1 days.

  • @ShaggE:

Fatal Frame 1 is by far the scariest game I've ever played. I still have trouble picking it up and playing it at night.

Imagine a Resident Evil style 'solve these puzzles' maze mansion. Now picture it with japanese shit everywhere. Oh, and this mansion has ghosts in it. LOTS. Not the sort that go 'ooooooo' and jump out at you, but the sort that will quietly go through the walls of three rooms you've just walked through, stalking you, until they slip up behind you and kill you.

And oh yeah, all you've got to fight them is a camera.

  • Image of ShaggE ShaggE at 02:48 AM on 04/16/08 *

@Komrade_Kayce: Sounds good, then. I shall add it thusly.

Let's just hope the 360 emulates it well.

  • Image of Sloopydrew Sloopydrew at 02:49 AM on 04/16/08 *

@ShaggE: Fatal Frame = Two Words: Must Play Now I need to catch up on this Siren franchise. Somehow I never even heard of it until reading Ashcraft's post.

  • Was I the only one that found Siren a terribly hard horror game. Even among Fatal Frame, Clock Tower, and others I could never beat Siren even with a guide. Oh well, maybe I'll watch someone else beat this one for me. :D

    Laziness ftw~

  • The game was so bad I sold it about 24h after I bought it. Why remake such a crappy game when there is so much good stuff suffering from graphic aging (Silent Hill 1 anyone?)

  • @ShaggE: well, i kinda quit using their service (it was good, but i got enough games on deck right now) and you know, they wanted their shit back, which is kinda fair.

@Komrade_Kayce: shit, now im all sad i slept on that series in the day, i was somehow convinced it was just another action/platformer or something, odd.

say, did you dig fatal frame 1 more than 2? i kinda skipped 1.

  • Holy Shit....I am officially the happiest man in the world right now.

Call me crazy, but I thought the first one was one of the best games available on the PS2. To this day, I have yet to play a video game that tops it in sound design......awesome news.

  • @ironraiden:

Perhaps they are aware of the flaws of the first game and intend to address them?

Dont count your chickens before they hatch dude.

Besides the more horror games in this HD generation the better.

  • @108: If you go to the right shop, you can get Famitsu on Wednesday. Dont go to any major retailers.

  • @ironraiden:
Cuz the creators of Silent Hill One and members of Team Silent went off and formed Team Siren to make the Siren series, that's why Silent Hill went downhill after one =P

  • @Cchrist:

Pretty badly apparently. But Siren 2 improved alot of features and gameplay from its predecessor.

I hope that we should expect Team Siren to know what they're doing.

  • @Dir_en_grey: Silent Hill 2 would like to have a word with you, sir.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 03:20 AM on 04/16/08 *

@Dir_en_grey: I do you hope you meant after 2. Since by far 2 has the best story ever. 3 would have been ok if they didnt rush the story and taken more time to make it more developed. Lets not even talk about 4 and the psp one.

  • @TheIrishNinja:

I did dig FF 1 more than 2, but 2 was also really good. I have this really strange mentality about sequels. Theres not much logic to the way I think, but generally if I play a sequel my brain seems to instinctively feel like 'okay, this was pretty fucked the first time, it can't get much worse'.

Silent Hill 2, funny you should mention it, was the first Silent Hill game I played. Same thing happened with all the Silent Hill's after it. James' journey was so hardcore that everything else seemed to just be weaksauce.

Something about FF1, because its 'new' to the main character, scares me a little bit more.

And yeah. Dont feel bad about missing out on the Fear Effects. Lots and lots of people did. Plus, unless you actually sit your butt down to play the game, it does seem action/platformer for the first few levels. Its only once you start seeing demons tear people apart from the inside, and start having to show your naked body to guards to distract them (seriously, lol) that you start finding this wonderful world within.

  • @Witzbold: Best Story ever is an understatement, if that's even possible.
    fav game

  • @Witzbold:

Wasn't there two PSP ones so far? The recent game and the 'interactive story'?

I heard the story one was pretty damn good actually, for just being a novel of sorts.

  • Image of ShaggE ShaggE at 03:27 AM on 04/16/08 *

@Witzbold: Aye. Silent Hill 2 is one of my favorite games ever. (except for the ridiculously long walk at the beginning)

I liked 3 almost as much, even though the enemies and overall plot were pretty uninspired. I think what redeems it in my eyes is that it has the best soundtrack of the series, in my opinion. Only Room Of Angel from SH4 tops it.

  • @ShaggE:

The opening cinematic theme to SH2 is still on my ipod.

Music is probably one of the most integral parts to a survival horror game. Knowing when to have it, what type to have, and when to cut it out can make or break a game for me.

Example of Failure: Resident Evil. Lucky for RE, the gameplay, zombies and cheesy B Story kicked serious ass. But the music? Entirely forgettable, except for two pieces, the precinct theme from 2, and the mansion theme from 1. (*winces, waiting for RE-fanboy flames*)

  • Man i loved Siren 2. Dunno much about the first one as a GAME, but both of them have totally terrified me. Using video for face textures is pure genius.

  • Image of ShaggE ShaggE at 03:39 AM on 04/16/08 *

@Komrade_Kayce: Agreed. I can barely remember any of the music from RE, except a slight bit from RE2.

In contrast, I often have trouble getting Silent Hill music out of my head. (the only other game that does that to me is Rise Of The Triad. Best MIDI soundtrack ever.)

  • @ShaggE: If you bought the collectors edition back in the day, they explain why the walk is so god-damn long.

it is so the player feels really segregated from the outside world.

  • Image of ShaggE ShaggE at 03:56 AM on 04/16/08 *

@mescalineeyes: Makes sense. But still sucks when you want to replay it.

I'll admit that it is awesome the first time, though, since you keep expecting something to happen.

Damn, now I want to play it again...

  • @ShaggE:

Heres a surefire sign of where the quality of the series went.

    Used SH4 at EB Games - 2.99
    Used SH2 Platinum Hits - 11.99

I bought SH4 a few months back cause it was the only SH I recalled throwing down in disgust.

I did the same thing again. :( Except with a copy that cost me less than five dollars this time.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 04:01 AM on 04/16/08 *

Well RE is a different genre of horror than SH really.

If we were to say with movies for example RE = Dawn of the Dead

    SH = Jacobs Ladder

  • @ShaggE: Nothing about SH2 sucks, no matter how many times you replay it ;)

  • Image of ShaggE ShaggE at 04:12 AM on 04/16/08 *

    @Komrade_Kayce: Wow. That's... wow.

But I have to say that I still liked SH4. Just not nearly as much as the first three. Great premise, mediocre execution.

@Witzbold: And there's it's downfall, in my opinion.
RE is great in small doses, but jump scares get tiresome after awhile, and the infamous acting eliminates any sense of foreboding it tries to build up.

Silent Hill, on the other hand, relies on atmosphere and unrelenting nihilism, which causes it to be far scarier and more appealing. (I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I can't help but ramble when it comes to horror :P)
