The Sims: 100 Million Served

Hey, you like [insert your favourite franchise here]? Well, [insert your favourite franchise here] don't mean shit. Not next to the might of The Sims. Anyone who doubted Maxis and EA for releasing a game which simulated the more mundane aspects of everyday life, threw in some fashion design and amateur architecture then pumped out 1,543,769 expansion packs was going to succeed, boy, you backed the wrong horse. EA's Rod Humble has today announced that the series has sold over 100,000,000 units worldwide. That's one. Hundred. Million. And how are they celebrating? Why, with a free, exclusive outfit for your Sims, of course. No point straying from the course now, eh?

Meh, you're just hating on [insert my favourite franchise here] because it's popular.

Ontopic: Sweet. Merciful. Crap. That's a lot of copies.

  • I can't stop thinking 'bullshit'
But then again, who HASN'T at least tried a sims game?

  • @scotty: They're counting the expansions, which I'd say would account for a sizeable number of that 100,000,000

  • Just goes to show how a simple thing like having a game women like to play, increases sales.

  • Has EA released a "Sims 2 Complete Collection" yet?

Id give the expansions a go if I didn't have to buy 8 of them separately.

  • @Cruithne: My chick loves this game. Sucks I am usually on the PC playing something or working. I need to get her a laptop. I got to get back into playing the Sims again.

  • Oooooh, its like Mad Libs! Let me try!

Hey, you like Chex Quest? Well, Chex Quest don't mean shit.

:(. That wasn't very nice Luke. I thought it was a pretty decent Doom clone, myself.

@Komrade_Kayce: That game OWNED. The spinny-sporky thing was one of my favorite weapons ever.

  • "Hey, you like [insert your favourite franchise here]? Well, [insert your favourite franchise here] don't mean shit."

I inserted both Mario and Pokemon and both beat Sims!

  • I think you're missing out on the bigger story here. EA has an employee named Rod Humble!

  • Ummmmm, that many copies sold means how much money for EA? And we get an outfit? are you, serious? I mean wow.... They could at least act like they appreciate it. but then again 100 million copies sold, they really can't afford to give out much more than a sweater that says 100 million sold.

I assume by outfit they mean clothing...

  • @xBETAx:
By outfit they mean a downloadable item of clothing to add to your game for your Sims to wear.

  • @scotty: Me.

It's so stupid to waste time on checking others life, specially on virtual ones. (yup, not even have had a Tamagotchi)
Also, c'mon, is an EA game.

Finally an official Sims 2 nud patch to let my Sims party the proper way.

    What? No nude? Dammit!

  • Does that include all the expansions, stuff packs, repackaged bundles, and console and portable games? I'd think one person buying every The Sims release should account for about 50,000,000 units right there.

  • Pretty amazing.

I think it just goes to show you that humans are programmed to find other humans and humanity interesting above all; the constant chase of trying to understand, reinvent and control ourselves is part of what keeps us evolving mentally.

That said, it's very sad to hear stories of other talented Maxis and EA employees pulled off of other projects and shoehorned into The Sims games. And, as a big fan of Sim City, I have no doubt that game series has suffered in the shadow of it's more popular brother.

  • @Komrade_Kayce: +3, Chex Quest rocked, I loved that game, and the electrospork was great ,and so was the cannon *gets lost in childhood memories*

  • @Komrade_Kayce: Wow, this comment has so much win in it. I remmeber getting that and being so excited to play it. Pretty decent indeed.

  • Quite possibly the most freakishly addicting game ever... Then again, maybe it's because I'm female.

  • @Radiogaga: thats what I thought. None of you find this as an insult eh? I take it as EA calling us all suckers. Prolly took whoever made the shirt under 5 minutes to make it. I'm not saying we deserve a totally free expansion.

But to me, I take it like EA is throwing a huge party and basically told us we could watch it from a distance.

  • I never understood the appeal of The Sims. I play games to experience things that I would never be able to do in real life e.g. score the winning goal in the World Cup, fly a jet fighter etc. With the Sims you get to have a job and go to the toilet....

  • Well, I'm one of them. Got The Sims a few years back to see what the hubbub was.

    Did not like it.

  • When they have 468 'different' games in the franchise it's not as overwhelming...

  • @Malidictus: You said it perfectly right there. I honestly have NO idea how people like this game.

  • @Malidictus: Well, apparently you never played house as a kid. The Sims is pretty much that, in electronic form, if you think about it. What was really fun was being a part of The Sime Online where you play "neighbourhood"!

  • You hear that sound? That's Will Wright laughing as he swims through his piles of money.

  • @Bam345:
That's basically what I thought. I love the core game of the Sims, I've been playing since the original was released but I'm just burnt out with playing the constant here's our new expansion pack game and I find it insulting that they try to milk us with the Stuff packs in between.

They say that a lot of players only play the Sims and that's why they believe they'll be prepared to sink so much money into one franchise, which of course a lot of players do so they keep on making them. :-/

    @goonface:
I think to really get into the game you need to jump into the community behind it. That's half the fun right there, sharing stories, houses you've made, downloading objects and clothes other people have made. Joining in challenges put up in various forums.

If it was just the game then I don't think it would have lasted as long but there are many facets to the game that keep people hooked.
Of course the console games have none of these things which is personally why I steer clear of those.

  • they r making the sims 3..i played it

  • notice they say "the sims" and not specifically whether its the original or Sims 2. I'm guessing they added up the numbers for all versions and all expansions going back 8 years or so. but as a sucker who bought the original and all expansions, and 2 and most expansions and even the complete shams of the object packs i can see how they have reached this high a number. people who don't get it don't get it. people who do get it get it in spades. i'm out hundreds of dollars to EA over the years for this one game alone. and so are many others.
