Aus/NZ GTAIV Cut Due To "Weapon Being Inserted Into A Private Area"

Rockstar Australia have, against the wishes of just about everyone who's got the game pre-ordered locally, refused to disclose just what it was that's been cut from the local version of Grand Theft Auto IV. No matter. Publishers Take-Two may have been a little more forthcoming, with a call to the company's Australian customer service line apparently yielding the following response.

Okay guys, I have some news for you regarding what was edited from the AU release. I just gave Take2 a call (a friggin expensive 1902 number!) and this is exactly what I was told:

"Well in regards to what Rockstar have removed for the Australian release, as far as we're aware there was only one sexually violent cut-scene which Rockstar felt would cause the game to be Refused Classification. Unfortunately we're not able to go into specifics until after the game has been released but I can tell you that the scene involves a weapon being inserted into an enemies private area during a mission where Niko is taking revenge after one of his close friends was forced into sexual intercourse during his stay in prison."

Seriously I thought he was joking ....I was like LOL you're joking right? He says "No. This is what Rockstar felt needed to be removed from the game for it's Australian release. We were recently given permission to release this information because as we understand, Rockstar originally made a press release stating that the game would be released uncut world wide. We felt it would be misleading not to release the information".

Wait, that's not going into specifics?

  • one of a kind xD

  • The portions cut include:
    Anything remotely fun

  • Well...

One would guess after the Manhunt fiasco, Rockstars got a pretty good handle on what is/isn't allowed.

If I recall correctly, weapons+genetalia were one of the main concerns with Manhunt as well.

    Europe=Land of Sex
    America=Land of Violence
Australia=Dont you dare put the two of those together!

Please don't tell me your block or pixelating a weapon going into his butt and out his penis? Omg the pain... *cringes*

    Begin speculation:

    Oh man!

    I hope it's an anus!

    No, no -- I hope it's a pee-hole!

  • So any guesses on what the weapon is? I think the obvious choice might be a bat or a golf club but I wouldn't rule out a shotgun or an RPG either.

  • How not specific of them.

I wonder what details they'll give us when they are 'specific'.

  • Image of Cchrist Cchrist at 01:46 AM on 04/16/08 *

There's not much private area to insert it really.

  • @Komrade_Kayce: I don't think you would ever want to put those two together, cause then you would just have Violent Sex!

    ...

    ...
    ...

    ...
hmm...on second thought maybe that isn't such a bad mixture...

@psycoking: Two great tastes that taste great together.

  • why is this tagged as a rumour if "I just gave Take2 a call"

  • Rockstar are true rockstars. Only they could come up with something like this... *shakes head in amusement*

  • @allabouttrust: Because the "I" isn't me, that's a quote. Hence it being in, you know. BLockquotes.

  • ouch...sounds painful! so niko shoves a boobstick up someones ass?

  • Dammit. They promised violent gun rape and by George I want violent gun rape.

    ...Wait, that sounded kinda strange.

  • Are we going to get a minigame with this activity?

Tip: Move the left thumbstick up and down to...

    *ugh*

  • The pixelated picture looks like it's blocking out Niko's shlong...

  • $50 says the Housers were inspired by the Denzel Washington remake of Man on Fire. There's some explosive rectal action in that film as well.

  • I laughed out loud at that quote. I imagine the person on the phone giving the details in a staunch, emotionless, monotone voice.

"...the scene involves a weapon being inserted into an enemies private area during a mission where Niko is taking revenge after one of his close friends was forced into sexual intercourse during his stay in prison."

Ah man that made my night.

  • Yay for more crimes to be blamed on GTA4!

  • I'm guessing it's a nostril. Cause you can pick your friends and you can pick your nose. With a gun. But you can't pick your friend's nose with a gun. God no, that's private as hell.

  • @Komrade_Kayce: You really shouldn't sexualize violence. That's one of the big reasons why we have rape and other forms of sexual assault.

  • I get why they cut it for australia, but why do WE have to suffer? Not that I wanted to see someone get their crotch blown off or anything...

  • @munkah: Sorry pal, NZ's market isn't really big enough to warrant its own version. You get ours. Sorry.

  • So, I think Rockstar has gone too far. Art is one thing, but making a cutscene where Niko shoves a gun up someone's ass, literally? That's completely unnecessary and just tasteless. That's crossing the border of funny and just plain graphic, to a violent sex scene.

    That just sickens me.

And way to go Rockstar, we'll see how far Fox News takes this one.

  • it was -obviously- a tommy gun in a vagoo

should be quite the interesting scene!

  • Image of Cchrist Cchrist at 02:00 AM on 04/16/08 *

@allabouttrust: Because we can't be certain if he really did call or just make it up. Y'know "made a call in his head".

  • There was some "violent sex" in San Andreas too. Although it was always off-screen it was pretty disturbing nonetheless. I'm pretty sure the missions were story-missions as well (the part where you're running around with that chick from GTA3).

CJ doesn't sound like he's having a good time in that cabin.

  • Of course this flies in America but not other places. We have guns jammed in our wholes almost daily, sometimes twice a day. Hell, my sister has a gun wedged so far in her the doctors say they can't operate.

  • @JRONJR:

    ....Excuse me but, wtf?

  • So it was a hand-cannon up the wazoo? @JRONJR: Just tell her to take a salt tablet, the ultimate cure-all.

  • @monkeybars: @gravytoast: That's like saying "you shouldn't sensationalize violence", but that's precisely what this game and every other of its type does. That's what Jack Thompson always cries about, but we simply try to explain to him that movies are no different.

Something like this is no different than what you see in movies, so in its own strange way, it actually means that video games are maturing if they can start depicting these sort of things.

In Man on Fire, which I referenced earlier, Denzel's character shoves a C4 charge up someone's ass (in a hunt for revenge, just like this). After he got the answers he wanted from the guy, he still walked away without defusing the charge, letting it blow the guy apart from the inside while he cried out to him.

Needless to say, this is child's play by comparison.

  • @Komrade_Kayce: @psycoking:

    Or Sexy Violence!

  • @Luke Plunkett: We usually get the uncut UK version; that's how we got GTA 3/Vice City/San Andreas uncut.

  • @Zeliard:

Dude I wouldn't watch a movie if it had that in it.

Forgive me for not being as desensitized to perversion as the average joe, but I have my opinion.

I was going to get GTA IV but I doubt I'll be allowed to if my parents find out it has THIS in it.

And I never watched Man on Fire. Thanks for letting me know about that, now I won't.

As far as sexual content goes I just thought it had about the same as GTA3-San Andreas had. The masturbation/fellatio/intercourse option with the prostitutes...I thought I might be able to manage, but gunrape? Wtf. That's all I have to say. Wtf. If Fox News gets their grimy hands all over this story, I may never be able to purchase GTA IV.

  • @Luke Plunkett: First time it's happened. In the past NZ has always got the UK version when Australia threw a hissy-fit. Doesn't bother me though as I'm importing.

  • Reading about this made me want the game THAT much more. It's clear that Rockstar doesn't care about censors, parents, or bullshit politics; they just want to create compelling content. And for that, I applaud and support them.

  • @munkah: I was under the impression you got OUR versions. Both games were initially released uncensored in Aus, then later withdrawn and edited. You never had to edit them, so could keep selling the original editions.

    That sound right?

  • @Komrade_Kayce: Holy shit man I laughed like hell. Don't worry about the other PC thugs around here :) Maybe it's because I'm aussie ;)

  • Anyone who has an issue with this

I bring the case of Vito to the table, Season 6 of the Sopranos.

At least in Niko's case, his brand of justice seems a little more 'justified'. Vito got a pool cue up the ass and killed just for being a gay mobster.

  • Too Specific...

  • It's pointless trying to name movies or TV shows where this sort of thing has happened (I can name many); more relevant is whether games have done it before. And surely they must have!

That's assuming it's a bat/blade/gun up the arse. There are other ways to interpret the description, but Rockstar wouldn't be dumb enough to try them.

Oh well. It's not a dealbreaker of an edit.

  • I wonder if this is gonna be done with whatever clubbing weapon you have handy. Because I distinctly remember going around knocking people's heads with a dildo in GTA:SA.

  • @gravytoast: So then import the Australian version. Problem solved.

  • @Luke Plunkett: You're correct in regard to GTA III and San Andreas. They had changes made post-release. Vice City on the other hand was censored pre-release just like this. NZ still got the uncensored version then. Similarly the same thing has happened recently to Dark Sector which was originally banned in Australia but released unmodified in NZ.

  • Man on Fire is Denzel's best performance. So damn good movie.

  • makes me wonder what the specifics will be if that wasn't too specific itself. i'm sort of scared.

  • @frostcircus: I'm pretty sure that something like this is a video game first. At least, I can't recall it being in any other game. Nobody else has the balls to do something like this. Rockstar is far more heavily influenced by films and TV, rather than other games. That's why they're being brought up.

The Housers probably watched the entire series of The Sopranos, as well as films like Goodfellas and Eastern Promises, from beginning to end several times while writing the script for GTA4. You'll probably find countless references sprinkled all throughout.

There's supposedly an extended Heat-style shootout in one of the missions, which I must say has me rather excited, as that's arguably the greatest shootout in movie history.

  • @gravytoast: Agreed - well, not the parents bit, although I'm sure mine wouldn't be /stoked/ to see me buy a game with this sort of content.

It's just not to my taste - assuming that it's graphic enough to /require/ the cutting, and isn't just offscreen, it just seems to me to be needlessly violent and tasteless.
As others have pointed out - movies and such are already doing it. On the other hand, I don't watch those sort of movies.

It certainly sucks that fellow Aussies who /do/ want to see it won't be able to without importing, and I hope that we get a more appropriate rating system soon... but forgive me if I don't shed a tear because I can't see something repulsive. ;)

  • @Zeliard:

And pay close to $100 for a video game, that I can't play on my American 360? No thanks.

    @Achenar:

Well I can legally buy the game, although I live in their house. I figured it'd be easy to slip a game by, but they're Fox News addicts, and if this dilemma got out of hand, I probably wouldn't be able to purchase the game.

Also, for those who want the scene in the game, surely the scene will show up on the internet somehow, so how's it a big deal if you can watch it anyway? :P

  • @Luv2Hate:

If they didn't care, they wouldn't have removed it from their game.

  • @gravytoast: Also, for those who want the scene in the game, surely the scene will show up on the internet somehow, so how's it a big deal if you can watch it anyway?

I'm American, so I get the uncut version anyway, but come on man. People don't want that scene for the thrill of seeing it. They want it in because it's a part of the game and a part of the storyline. Seeing a clip of it of youtube wouldn't help. Context is everything.

  • @ gravytoast: just curious, if your parent's aren't going to let you get this game, are you actually old enough to have this game in the first place? Because whilst i don't find this to be too horrific (seen many worse things), having these ratings and following them is one of the few defenses that people will accept that allows to have violent games.

  • @Zeliard:

So your mad cause your not old enough to have a parent know there is such a scene like this in a game.

When you hit 18 your prospective is gonna change big time so in the mean time. While you complain about a scene your obviously not old enough to see. Think to yourself whose at fault here a kid to young (yourself). Or a game that is naturally violent and sexual. Hmmm

As for the change with AU version. I feel sorry for you all. Though I'm sure there will be alot of importing going around in AU mailing services.Who would even like the idea of a original scene being re edited.

  • @Cunder: Why the hell is that directed at me? You must be confused.

  • So the only thing cut is a cut..scene? ehh, I'm still importing the US version
