Want to know what your $89.99 purchase of Wii Fit is going to secure you in the box art department? Now you know! Featuring a frighteningly monolithic Wii Balance Board about to crush an unsuspecting Wii Fit yoga fan and a Touch! Generations badge—Wii Fit is the third Wii title to do so—it's certainly more vibrant than its Japanese counterpart. The back is a multi-ethnic, multi-generational feel-good product photo fest.

Look how handsome everyone is, after just a few moments with Wii Fit. Where can I score some of that sterile Wii Fit brand workout gear, Nintendo? I want a total Wii Fit lifestyle too!

  • Does it come with the uniforms? 'Cause if it does, I am all over that fuckin shit.

  • Mmm green. Why does bright green things always look tasty? (Antifreeze)

  • TOUCH GENERATIONS!?
    REALLY?!

    I CAN TOUCH IT TOO?!

    Plain box is plain.
Needs more fit people in the front to capture attention.

  • And so the Nintendo take over begins....

Uh. Uh. *shudder*. GO AWAY, WiiFit! I don't want you, you work of the devil! Mainstream games devil!

Just kidding. I really don't like it though. Whoever does, well, have fun with it.

  • First Mario Kart, now this.
I don't like where this is going.

  • i'd hit it.

  • *shudder* The old guy doing an Iron Mike is giving me basic training flashbacks...

  • Nintendos box art is getting rather boring recently. Mario karts was empty and bland, just like this.

I really do want this though for some reason. But I can't figure out why. But at £70 in the UK, no purchase until a significant price drop.

  • Neon green? Who thought that was popular?

  • It looks like an Xbox product with that color scheme.

  • Yay for the glorified scale and mini game machine!

  • is that white duder playing some sort of boxing!? I love WiiBoxing. I need more of it's sweat inducing goodness to beat my drunken friends into virtual pulp.

MMM boxing with steps, zomg! Can we get a patch for victorious boxers to use the board pleasE? no? ok then I'm not buying :(

  • Needs more lies to sell more.

  • Remember that time Miyamoto told us Wii Fit isn't actually designed to make you ...fit? I think I'll just save my $90, thanks Nintendo. Maybe I'll decide to spend it when you don't "casualize" your franchises and start releasing some much-needed VC goodness.

  • @Derigor: Says Aerobics at the bottom

  • @Derigor:

I think you'll just see a punching bag in this one, and some swaying mini-games when the bag goes back and forth.

  • @Klaymen: He did say that, but it's been proven you can lose weight with it if you use it daily.

  • Image of Pezdispenser Pezdispenser at 03:48 PM on 04/15/08 *

Why is it that this instantly reminded me of Rod and Todd Flanders?

"I'm a Surfer! Look Daddy, I'm king of the mountain!"

  • haha i still can't wait for the lawsuits to nintendo claiming it didn't make them thin cause of the word FIT

  • @aden.exe: boring? bland? no. It's casual; older folks and soccer Moms love white voids

  • @Okari:

Wow, proven?? You don't say! I could prove any random thing helps me lose weight. My computer speakers for instance. Or my television because it had an exercise infomercial on every night and I lost 3 pounds because of it.

  • Sweet I love posts about hard plastic objects...... D:

  • @LittleBigPlaneteer: well it's not proven proven, like scientifically or anything, but there has been some apparent success in losing weight from daily use as documented by Vinnk of 4 color rebellion

  • even if the wii fit board is expensive, it seems worth it.
they integrated the board with that ski game, so i'm sure games down the road will use it's possibilities.

  • @LittleBigPlaneteer:
You lost 3lbs from watching an infomercial? I need to find this infomercial.

Yes, those things can help you lose weight, but from what I assumed he was implying was that it doesn't help you become fit at all, but it does.

  • it seems like you have to be fit just to own one.

  • I want those clothes.

  • Image of ca$h ca$h at 04:01 PM on 04/15/08 *

    @El Patricko:
    That's what I was thinking...

  • @Okari:

My point was that anything that can actually induce some sort of physical activity on a daily basis will likely increase the chances of you losing weight.

I just feel like many people may be buying into this thing as if it's a groundbreaking exercise equipment (the name Wii Fit does not help at all), when really it's more or less another mini-game accessory/scale.

I have serious doubts that this thing costs anything near 89.99 to make and I feel like Nintendo can and will easily get away with charging whatever they want because of the hype surrounding this accessory. I'd be more supportive of the thing if it was like 30-40 less

  • I'm actually excited about it! Thinking that it'd make a cool (and totally not cheesy) gifts for girlfriends!

  • @JediTilo: Not really.. She could think you're calling her fat :P

And those clothes should come with the game!

  • What in the THX1138 have they created???

Every morning when I step on it will it ask me how I am feeling?

  • @CockroachMan: Yeah, if someone gave me that (without me asking first), my immediate reaction would be "So you think I need to shape up, huh? Gee, thanks honey, I love being told I'm a pig."

  • Image of jayntampa jayntampa at 04:33 PM on 04/15/08 *

@Evil Tortie's Mom: I do need to shape up, that's why I'm getting it for myself :D

I think anyone that thinks WiiFit will get them in shape is fooling themselves ... I do think it's a good way to start getting people moving again. I'm hoping it will help to motivate me.

Plus, I'm thinking about all the cool games this board could be used for.

  • @Evil Tortie's Mom: Maybe you actually do need it. And I find it so stupid that women take gifts out of context.

  • I hope after using Wii Fit I can score with the ladies.

  • Mock Conversation between me and my girlfriend:

"Are you still playing those videogames?"

"Naaa, Babe this is WiiFit, you should play with me"

    "Are you calling me fat."

    "Oh..shhii"

  • Wow, that looks...lame.

  • "Hey babe what you playin?"

"Wii Fit, Do you want to play?"

    "Are you calling me fat?"

"Oh, No baby I didnt mean it like that."

...be careful when asking your girl to play this...

  • @ShirtGuyDom: Let's see who thinks neon green is popular after we see the sales figures, shall we?

(Green is the colour scheme in the game, right? So it makes sense to have it on the box, and the clothes with green bits are pretty nice. Overall, not exactly surprising but another decent design job, as you'd expect.)

@LittleBigPlaneteer: Yeah, exactly - it's about encouraging you to do some exercise regularly (not about turning muscle-bound gym-haunting imbeciles into even more muscle-bound stay-at-home imbeciles). Make you fit as in 'to join the Marines', no, make you fit as in 'regular exercise is better for you than no exercise whatsoever', sure.

Basically I think with Animal Crossing Nintendo realised they had 'game that nags you to play it regularly' down pat, so if they can apply that to exercise, it's a good thing.

(For the record, I won't be getting it.)

  • hummm i'm undecided about this one. it seems interesting enough i'm just worried about the weight limit... I'm 268lbs right now. i'm not fat but not fit either. I used to work out alot then got a desk job and i'm chubby now 6'4" btw. if i buy it and this damn thing snaps in half i'll be pissed. i mainly want it so i can have better balance. i know it sounds stupid but i skate on the weekends and this might help with me falling on my ass when i try to grind.

  • The Wii is not a gaming system anymore. It is a way of life.

I am enjoying how everyone seems to think that the word fit automatically means they will lose weight.

    fit 1 |fit|
    adjective ( fitter , fittest )
1 [ predic. ] (of a thing) of a suitable quality, standard, or type to meet the required purpose : the meat is fit for human consumption | [with infinitive ] is the water clean and fit to drink?
    • (of a person) having the requisite qualities or skills to undertake something competently : he felt himself quite fit for battle | [with infinitive ] Ted was ghastly pale and fit to do no more than switch channels.
    • Biology possessing or conferring the ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment : survival of the fittest.
    • suitable and correct according to accepted social standards : a fit subject on which to correspond.
    • [with infinitive ] informal (of a person or thing) having reached such an extreme condition as to be on the point of doing the thing specified : he baited even his close companions until they were fit to kill him.
    • informal ready : well, are you fit?
2 in good health, esp. because of regular physical exercise : I swim regularly to keep fit | figurative the measures would ensure a leaner, fitter company.
    • Brit., informal sexually attractive; good-looking.

Its not Wii Skinny. Or Wii Weight Loss. It is Wii Fit. The definition for that is so broad that there is nothing wrong with its usage here. Regardless, we already know that games like DDR can help you lose weight. Wii Sports and its clones are already shown to aid in health and rehabilitation in various applications. Why shouldnt Wii Fit be the same?

Anything that promotes physical activity and exercise is going to help your health unless there is an injury you are aggravating. I shouldnt expect this much of Kotaku readers to understand this. Or really gamers in general. The only thing fit about most of you is probably your thumbs... I kid, I kid.

As an exercise device this has potential to achieve great results. If the games it uses are fun and addictive then people will indeed become fitter. Get ready for round two of the the mainstream media's love affair with all things Wii.

  • Nintendo: Now You're (Not) Playing With Power!

  • Somebody hack this sh*t.

  • @AnonAMoose: Weight limit's 330lbs. You'll be fine, just don't jump on it with cleats.

Wait a minute, the WiiFit interface (green) doesn't match the Wii's (blue). Well crap.

And you know, I have a feeling someone's going to mod this thing to be more realistic with the snowboarding/surfing games. Just standing still and wobbling back and forth isn't going to be enough. They'll probably tape it to a balance barrel or something.

  • @JediTilo:

WHAT?!? DO YOU THINK IM FAT?!?!

Ummm...maybe you should reconsider that JediTilo....

  • That boxing guy is hot.

On topic though, while I doubt anyone is going to get fit and/or lose weight alone, I could see it providing much needed motivation and structure to people who'd like to live a little healthier lifestyle and just need a kickstart.

  • @AnonAMoose: I'm not trying to be hateful but unless most of your weight is muscle, even at 6'4", you're pushing obese. (according to BMI)

But don't worry, 62% of America is overweight and 27% of America is so far overweight they're considered obese. This was back in 2000 though, so the percentages should be even higher.

This all leads to America's distorted sense of correct proportions, and the obesity epidemic. Just a wake up call if you want to live pass 70.

  • @El Patricko:

    The uniform crack was awesome..

I am so buying this. I don't care if it makes me lose weight or not.

As long as I have an outlet to feel active whe
