Mandatory installs on the PS3. It's a new line over which you lot can divide yourselves into "for" and "not for" camps, but does it really have to be this way? No. It'd be a moot point if gamers were given the choice of an install, and while Capcom and SCE seem oblivious to this, Sega have at least taken note, offering anyone who picks up a copy of Valkyria Chronicles the choice between a 3.3GB install or fifteen second load times. Install, load times, install, load times, which will you choose?

if the game is any good, install.
Install. Also, I hope there's English menus/subtitles, I hate this thing called "waiting."
for example, install probably would have made mass effect much more enjoyable.
If I had a PS3, and over 15gigs of free space, you can bet I'd want an install. Seriously, load times bug the crap out of me.
i have like 60+gb left out of 80. install for me.
I wish every game had an install. Load times are getting out of control.
Holy shit a 3.3GB install? At least its not mandatory.
Anyways will be looking foward to my LE version that has a minature of the tank in the picture.
@Maldron: Doubt it.
I will install it.
I whine about laziness
but it's nice to have.
I'm going to have to buy a bigger HD. Either way i can't wait for this game. This game is going to be great. Well i hope. So yes install will be for me. :D
If I had a PS3, I'd probably take the time to install. A little patience now to save a lot of patience later.
I would hate for it to be mandatory, though... I really don't know why.
I'm going to shell out the 5-20 minutes of my life to install every game that will let me. I have 178 gigs free on my PS3 at the moment...
Well, I installed my last sega game (Ryu ga Gotoku: Kenzan)for minimal load times, so I'll do the same with this!
I'd install. A 60GB+ Hard Drive is a lot of space. Plus its upgradeable with cheap 160GB harddrives nowadays. I would install.
I'll be installing it, and getting a sandwich while I wait.
I'll always do the install for every game with it but I do believe it should be optional. Why you ask? So I don't have to hear people complain about it.
...would it work if you, say, do the optimal install, play through the game, and then delete the install while still being able to keep the save information?
Are there really no load times? I wish I had a bigger HDD and I also wish they implement a non mandatory install for 360 games too.
I've been looking through the data from my games and the majority of games save around 2-4gigs of data to the system. Most hide it though.
I'm not surprised to see everyone here saying install. It's easy to bitch and moan about installing a console game, but when it makes load times almost obsolete everyone will be praising them.
I would always take an install over load times any day.
@Witzbold: I think Kenzan's was like 5GB, and DMC4's was 4GB.
I'd check, but my PS3 is firmware updating atm.
I think that's all people wanted: A choice. Now I want to see more developers use cache when a hard drive is a available on the 360 (as oblivion and many other games like crackdown) rather than complaining about Microsoft not allowing them to do an install.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'll install for every game no matter what.
I hope future games make it optional too. I mean it's the perfect choice. Why should a developer force something like this on the consumer?
I would install. If I ever had a space problem, I can just delete it, no big deal.
Install it's not like i can't do anything during that time.
I guess the days of plug and play gameplay are going the way of the do-do. I just hope they improve load times in games in the future. Or else, what really makes having a console that much different from a PC? If every game is like this, its the same as buying a PC game and installing it. What do you guys think?
I would install for sure. I've been waiting months since I first saw this as god knows what name on Siliconera, and I'm going to be stuck waiting several more months after it releases in Japan. What difference is another 10-15 minutes.
@ChunkOFunk: Question, why do you want over 15 gig free for a 3 gig install?
The fact that we can display we stuff in Home that is saved to our HD kinda worries me with so many games asking for large installs. I see the point of wanting more free space just hoping I can really have all I want to decorate my HOME.
@NeVeRMoRe666: The reason why consoles are different is that it's the same system for everyone and games are optomized for them because of that reason. PC games have to take into account any number of things. Consoles also cost far less and tend to require upgrading far less often to play the newest games (read: once per generation rather than once every 2 or so years.)
@Witzbold: Deny me my dreams, will you, sir? *sigh*
@NeVeRMoRe666:
A moderate rig
costs about a grand. Consoles
are less than half that.
@Chuco: o.O even if you have a 20gb there should be room for a few megabytes of pictures. Unless you want to put some rediculously huge movie on your Home theater setup.
OR
Get a 360 or a Wii
Not saying the PS3 is bad just that BD seems kind of pointless if you are not going to fill it up, why not use DVDs in the meantime.
Install over Load times any day. Do it once, no more wait...hmm okay.
@PogiJet: Not no, just very little. Like 80% off.
@Hostile: People can't complain if they get the option. People just need something to hate about so they pick stuff that might just help the game. If people can decide, they're less prone to nitpick.
@NeVeRMoRe666: Video Game Systems have always been computers that were tailored to play games. Installations always let masses of data be used without slowdown. Why not impliment that technology into our current systems? It would kind of be like buying a PC Game and installing it, but then again: Most of the people cannot afford a PC that can run the same game that they can get by just buying a console and the game. It works out longer in the longrun because Developers develop for certain specs whereas PCs are boundless
Have you noticed with the option, people are still picking to install? Hmm... hypocrites (not saying the people that are insalling condemned it before, but look at the majority now.)
Some games SAVE (Yes, your precious saves and screenshots and scores) are huge as hell too.
IS MGS4 Going to have an installation? The world may never know (until its answered.)
Options! Wonderful. Thank you, Sega... now give us Yakuza 2 in English.
15 seconds is a long time? I could install but I don't mind load times. Unless the loading will wear out the disc drive. I didn't mind it for every other generation so I'll prolly just wait for the load times. Unless the game loads every 5 seconds. Then I'd have to install.
Installing for sure. If I ever run out of space (I probably will, seeing as I have a 40gb), I'll just buy a bigger hard drive.
@Dorphat the Insomniac: As an upfront cost. My game machine has stayed good game machine for years by occasionally replacing one or two parts and being careful about which parts I pick. My main computer has actually been continuously updated since I was in high school.
Installing the games ain't so bad! Makes the loading times pretty crisp!
And you know, I have a Macbook Pro filled with a half-dozen TV shows to catch up on, and a couple of guitars -- plenty of things to do while the game installs!
More to the point: I really want this game. I'm going to play it with the fury of a hundred hungry screeching hyenas!
I wish there was an online VS mode. Hell, maybe there is. Though either way, I will play For Great Justice.
When I played it at TGS last year my jaw figuratively dropped at how it's, you know, an Actual Game, and not just some pandering anime trash.
That said, even if it were pandering anime trash -- this is the type of anime I like!
And White Knight Story is the kind of anime I love. Man, maybe the Japanese 80s are on a comeback, too.
@AUAnonymous: It's not about filling it up...it's just that the read speed for the BD is ridiculously slow. Damn technical limitations.
I have a 250 gb in my PS3. Install is fine by me.
Install, I'm really looking forward to this game and want the best experience I can get, so if installing cuts down load times then I'm willing to give up 3.3 GB of space on my HDD.
Well, I think this is a sign I should look into upping my PS3's HD size...I'm not quite close to emptying out yet, but with MGS4 and the rest coming later this year, I could probably hit my barrier soon.
Well, it is optional.
If anyone is getting it, be sure to share some impressions, ya know?
I think I have about 30 gigs left, so I should be able to do it. I can't see myself tolerating 15 second load times, at least not if they happen often. I'll probably try playing without and then doing it if they annoy me enough.
I have no problems with a mandatory install since I've been a PC gamer for a long time. That said, I'd like to see some noticeable change for my time, and this sounds resonable. The Devil May Cry debacle was not of course.
Everybody who likes a game enough to buy it probably will do a HD install even if given the option anyway. People who bitched about mandatory installs before probably won't even get the game either way to begin with (or doesn't even have a PS3), and are just bitching for the sake of, bitching.
Install, if I buy it.
Install. Space or no space I would want to install.
