PlayStation Games To Be Ported To The PC?

gt5pc.jpg Maybe. Maybe. Speaking with Austrian site derStandard, Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has hinted that in order to take some money from the Chinese market, Sony may look at...unique ways of releasing GT:

Es ist sehr sehr unwahrscheinlich, dass GT auf einer anderen Konsole herauskommt. Aber vielleicht kommt es auf den PC. Vor allem am chinesischen Markt könnten wir so die Verbreitung fördern. [It's very, very unlikely that GT will be appearing on another console. But maybe it'll be released on PC. Particularly for the Chinese market.]
PC, huh? Good for them. Maybe on PC the online would actually work!

  • They will totally just pirate it

  • When can I expect COD4 ported to the pc?

    Oh...nm.

  • I didn't even notice the translation until I pasted it into Google Translate. rofl.

Sony is makes Computer Enteratainment, I always wondered why none of their games went to Vaios or just any Old PC... Wait, that means it could go to the 360 too.

  • While it could work, I would think it would be ripped to shreds by other larger, more feature filled racing games on the PC (where mods and such are in full force). I mean, hell, it could work, but I doubt it. And also, I never really thought of China as a big racing sim game type of people. I don't see how releasing it in China on the PC would help much. Meh...whatever, at least I'll be able to get it on my PS3, that's all I care about.

  • "But maybe it'll be released on PC. Particularly for the Chinese market."

What? Really? That doesn't sound like a good business move.

It'd be like opening a bank in the middle of Pirate-infested seas.

  • I doubt we're going to start seeing actual PS3 releases on PC from Sony.

  • when was the last time sony made a game for PC? I'd like to see SOCOM for PC.

  • Online doesn't work? And here I thought I'd be able to actually race against other people.

    ....

    I can?

  • At this rate, the PC version could be released before the PS3 version... with damage.

  • @Belldandy-fan:
see Sony Online Entertainment to answer that question.

PC games in China = Pirated Games in China. at least copied ps3 games are unplayable (i think) at the moment .

  • Wait, that means it could go to the 360 too.

Yeah, because MS requires any publisher that releases PC versions of games to have a version for their console. Even a competitor like Sony will be obliged to release their flagship series on the 360.

  • forget Microsoft and making money, realese it on MAC :)

  • Sure, the PC version will come out right after they release the PSP version. Which will come out after they release the non-demo, full version GT5. Which will come out after they patch GT5 Prologue with crash damage. Which will come out after they release a patch for improving the multiplayer experience for GT5 Prologue.

  • "Very unlikely" to see GT on another console? So that means it's mildly likely? What?!

  • Well, the big problem I see with this is that any game on Vista is pretty much unplayable, and XP is being discontinued. Based on my bitter experience (and I am a broken-hearted Windows fanboy), I can't see how the PC can keep on much longer for games of any kind.

  • @SG79: I said could... not saying it is an obligation just an abstract idea.

Sony can just go slick and call it Playstation on Windows and not Games for Windows (Live if ur Microsoft). Aww shiet.

  • I don't understand why they say "Very very unlikely." Sony owns Polyphony Digital, last I Checked. What in the world would possibly cause them to publish the game for any other console?

Well why not. If GT5 comes out on the PC, it will either crash and burn and won't be attempted again, thus stay PS3 exclusive, or it will be a success and people playing both platforms will enjoy it.

To me, it doesn't matter - GT5 might be a huge game and a selling point but to those that it is, I don't think they'll want to substitute the according console that can play it flawlessly with a PC that they need to build, maintain, upgrade and so on and forth.

  • same goes for xbox games being ported to windows computers.

  • I, for one, would be fucking shocked. But the siren's song of cross-platform revenue has proved me wrong before ...

  • i would actually like to see what they do to convert the Cell processor computations to a dual core system and oh wait what about the whole Blu-Ray thingy..lol I guess it'll be on multiple DVDs. The PC game that I own look soooo much better on my PC over 360 but it really comes down to the controller in which most modern PC ports support the 360 controller. I love Assasin's Creed on the PC more also Bioshock, Gears of War and GTA San Abdreas. It's possable I welcome and PC version of some SONY exclusives.

  • It's so going to be so pirated! What the hell is Sony thinking? Leave it on the PS3, then it might be pirated for the PS3 lol!

  • @ph15h: Sony is makes Computer Enteratainment, I always wondered why none of their games went to Vaios or just any Old PC... Wait, that means it could go to the 360 too.

SOE have already released a bunch of of games on PC, and The Agency is also going to be a PS3/PC release.

@SG79: Yeah, because MS requires any publisher that releases PC versions of games to have a version for their console. Even a competitor like Sony will be obliged to release their flagship series on the 360.

I'm guessing that's sarcasm (it doesn't always carry that well over the intertubes). But I'm guessing it's the other way around for their big titles. Halo 3 and Gears 2 are sure to come out for Vista at some stage to try and push their PoS O/S.

  • Gran Turismo has always done just fine on console. Am I wrong? Sales for PC games are no doubt not what they used to be, take that into account, Sony. GT sells systems. There's nowhere else you can get the game. Do they want to give gamers a reason not to buy a ps3? We all know it'll just end up being downloaded anyway.
@ Belldandy-fan: MMOs Everquest and The Agency. Not much, eh?

  • I don't know much about computer hardware, so I'll ask you people: How good would a computer need to be to run GT5? Would a "Crysis" computer do it?

I sometimes wonder what type of computer would each console compare to. I guess it's hard to compare though. I know consoles are relatively weak compared to high end PCs, but they seem to put out a lot when asked to.

  • @ph15h:

"Could" doesn't even apply here as long as Sony and MS are competitors on the console front, that's the point.

    @Doshu:

Yes, that was sarcasm. It's inevitable for any big MS published 360 game to see a PC release. There will be exceptions like JPN ones, like NGII etc.

  • No one remembers Bleem?

  • Wasn't GT2 released on the PC?

  • yeah, what the hell are they thinking over there at SCE? you can't expect to make money on pc games ESPECIALLY in the land of China where everything and yes, I really mean EVERYTHING is pirated and sold widely for cheap! I hope this is not the sign of desperation at SCE for more sales at the time where the good news about PS3 are flowing from every angle of the world even at their away turf of NA. GT series had been a great success on PS machines and so will GT5 on PS3.

  • Gran Turismo on the PC = Orgasmic. The community would make it the greatest game ever.

  • As many posters have previously mentioned, due to continuing piracy issues in China I fail to see the logic of GT being released on PC's as opposed to "on another console."

I suppose they're doing this just to spite Microsoft, but they shouldn't pretend releasing this on the PC in China is going to make any money unless they're going to go for a World of Warcraft model where people need unique CD keys to play online versus other players.

But last I checked there's a world of difference between the two games, I would think that most people would want to play GT with their friends and not online with random people. It's just too different from WoW to work on the same revenue model.

  • @psychicfriend:
What?!? I play games on vista on a daily basis. You either have problems with your installation, your drivers, or you just want to make a big deal out of nothing.

And yea, GT5 on PC would be great. I'd love to see how it'd stack up against GTR:Evolution and GRID, which are both pretty high on my wanted list.

  • I'd love to see what this game would look on my PC with my 8800GTX and monitor's native resolution of 1920x1200. The game looks great on the PS3, but it could definitely use some antialiasing.

  • china doesn't seem like a very lucrative market to me, unless they make it subscription based. it'll just sell a few thousand copies and then millions of pirated copies.

  • Der Standard is an Austrian newspaper, not German.

  • @SG79: why isn't that illegal?

  • @SG79: fuck man! Your sarcasm sucks ass. Way to make me sound like a dope.

I thought you were serious. Still that does sound like something MS would do with their OS. I saw the history of the internet thing on science channel and MS was about to sue the crap off of Netscape and got hit themselves with a suit for monopoly practices. Ah the good ol days when you had to pay per minute to use the internet.

anyway, I hope MS doesn't pull off something similar to that crap. Bad enough that they want to connect their passport system to everything and make you use gamertags and crap. I know that's optional but ...still.

  • It's funny though, you can dig up quotes of Yamauchi saying the exact same thing about GT3 and GT4. It's just not gonna happen.

It would actually be sort of awesome if they made a free MMO with microtransactions a la Battlefield Heroes... kind of like the spiritual successor of that Motor City Online game EA put out a few years ago. If there is any franchise built for this sort of thing its Gran Turismo. Of course, judging by how long PD takes to build their games, I shouldn't expect anything soon...

  • Playstation Games? Oh it's only about GT5!
Come on Luke this title is totally misleading...

  • Eh, I just want to stress this point again; Just because a console game will/might appear on the PC, it's not something average joe is going to pick up and just play. GT5 is kind of heavy on the visuals, and the price for a computer that can run this shit far exceeds the price of a PS3. Sure you can use the PC for emailing your friends and watch pictures of lolcats and read Fox News. But a Quad Core, Geforce 9800 GTX and 4gb of DDR3 is hardly needed for this, so don't bring up this argument anymore plzkthx.

Chantastic: They actually did just that. It was proposed that GT5 would ship as a basic, free title and then you would buy all the cars with microtransactions. The would roared at the mere idea and it was put to rest. Don't color me surprised if we'll see something similar anyway.

  • The world*

  • As for the "news" I don't see it happening. As for the last line of the post... face palm.

  • @mescalineeyes: At least someone noted. I currently study in Austria and a little advice: Change that. Those Austrians are proud of there country and certainly don't want to be counted as Germans. Thank you ;-)

  • Sony should be careful of what gossip is passed about from it's developers. As it stands at the moment, one intrinsic plus point to many PS3 owners (me included; i'm also a fast PC owner) is that in general the PS3's exclusives can not and will not be available elsewhere, while the Xbox360 is ever more shedding it's exclusives to PC for which it makes less sense to own if you have a fast PC (I also had a 360 until I had enough of it dying).

So, basically even though this isn't even a rumour, more a 'what if?' scenario, they should make sure they send out a clear message that PS3 games mean PS3 only, that's what most borderline console purchasers believe now (it tipped me over the edge + blu ray winning) so for them to give up one of their main strengths would be pretty stupid.

Fact is that the 360 now has barely ANY exclusives worth getting a system for if you have a fast PC because they are all either on it or will be on it soon enough, yet people assume PS3 exclusives (sony games mainly) will stay firmly on the PS3 and I believe they should too otherwise most people who own both PC/PS3 will buy it in the much cheaper PC format (no doubt with improved res/AA/effects of a GF8+ GPU).

  • austrian

  • other (german) interview with some gt5 news:

  • Yea ok. That would mean Sony committing scuicide. Polyphony themselves can't do it as Sony owns them and GT. Sony would never make their exclusive system seller go on another platform.

  • HELLOOO!!

the game is liscenced by Sony. it's up to them. why would they port a PS3 exclusive game, that shows off the PS3 just a bit to the PC? this isn't Microsoft... unlike MS, Sony does work..
