Kaplan, the makers of all those test preparation books, is teaming with Aspyr Media to create an SAT prep program for the Nintendo DS. Sure, the same title will also be made available for the PC and Mac (probably just like the stuff we've seen for years), but the flashcard form factor of the DS version makes it incredibly appealing.
If high school didn't represent some of the most stressful and awkward years of my life, I'd go back in a flash to play this SAT game on my DS! Think of it as Brain Age with a real tangible result. Would you be more likely to prep for the SATs on your DS than through a book or browser?
SAT Prep Game Coming to DS [GamelLife]

What's sad is that all this stuff people are doing with the DS could already have been done on Palm's. The DS really isn't anything new. It's too bad Palm didn't manage to tap into this. They used to be a decent company.
I know I would have used it.
At first my brain thought Perrin Kaplan. Now, if only I wasn't in college already that game could be of some use.
I don't see the DS as a strong SAT prep platform. The SAT is pretty heavy study based material. My brother's boy did prep online though. I think he used Boston Test Prep.
Wish this was around three years ago.
I think I'll get this, if enough people say it helps.
It would be useful for the vocabulary prep if nothing else. When I was preparing the GRE (SAT for grad school), for vocab studying, the choice was between a thick, awkward book and a pile of easy-to-lose, awkward flashcards. I definitely would have paid to have that all compacted onto my DS.
That's a pretty good idea, actually. With the popularity of DSes in high schools, it could definitely work - I know I could probably convince my parents to buy me a test prep-related game.
The problem is there are far more appealing things to do with a DS. Namely, play a different game.
It'd probably get to the younger kiddies. It won't affect many I bet, though.
I really hope that's a screen shot from the game : ) Maybe the SATs have gotten dumbed down since I was in high school!
Although in my job I OFTEN see people misspell their own names, so maybe it's for the best.
i would have used it, if this was out when i was in high school.
and in the long run, i think the DS being used for uses other than gaming (in-seat menu at the Mariners' home games, Map system for Disneyworld) has hit a high point being used for the SATs, of all things.
can't wait to see if this game actually helps people or not. probably will.
I used Kaplan's Schweser study notes when I was studying for my CFA charter. That would be (would have been) totally sweet to have that stuff in DS form.
Math GRE gets my vote, too.
I could see a lazy techie/gamer going to school, showing it off to his classmates, and using it as an excuse to not do his classwork, but after class he will go home and play something else.
I took the SAT in october, I regret not practicing as much as I should have, got a 780 on math, 620 verbal
If it comes out soon enough i will definitely pick these up for my sat practice.
When I was getting ready for college admissions tests, I had to practice on shovel with a piece of coal.
You damn kids with your Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots.
Can't wait to tell my kids "When I was your age, we had to read books and create our own flash cards in order to study!"
Flash cards!? you mean scans/word docs with font sizes of 2 torn up and placed in my shirt pocket to read while i rest my head on my hand during a test...errr
I mean study! yea we used to study!
@Hubert Humphrey Methadone: practice on *a* shovel...
And yet somehow I managed to graduate from Northwestern University, the preceding may be evidence of why I was a credit shy of an English minor. Me still don't speak it good.
Pfftt, everyone knows it's A for Answer.
@frank0127: in-seat menu? no shit? that'd be insanely wicked. damn seattleans! not sure i'd study using a DS. maybe if it were fully certified and whatnot.. i'd be afraid deviating from the tried-and-true (text, specific PC program) would bite me in the ass. however, can't wait to check out the german DS tutor when it comes out, mostly because it doesn't determine what college i get into.
OMG the SATs...at least I'm done with them now!! I'll be in college next year. BYEBYE HIGH SCHOOL!!!
SATs don't even matter that much.
@Struct09: Yep, me too. There weren't any SAT preps except for books of old tests.
This should be great for people who want to be extra sure that they get through high school without ever having sex.
I took my SATs Drunk. Take that, eugenics-esque standardized testing!
You know when I was taking....oh wait, I never took the SATs
Huh, Well either way this can be a good thing for those kids who just need to play games 24/7
@Mr. Fap☆Fap!:
Says the man with the hentai avatar
Call me back when they come out with a Graphing Calculator for the DS. It would have certainly come in handy during Algebra 2...
I'd be curious to see how they compare with traditional prep methods in terms of score increases.
It's a good sign to see bigger companies jumping on the success and embedded market of the DS.
There might even be a chance at a bigger deal complete with an ad campaign and a bundle pack (yeah right).
Screw test prep. The most prep I did was the PSAT and a Kaplan test (both twice- once a year). And nothing else, besides not becoming stupid....
1560's decent enough.
This probably will end up being a lot more popular than other electronic versions they've published in previous years, even though it will end up having less content, almost assuredly. I'm figuring that vocabulary and math would be the highlights of the cart, while there's things that I can't really see working too well (such as comprehension and any kind of essay questions). Still, this would be an effective and relatively inexpensive method of improving at least part of a person's SAT score, and the method of doing so should be more enjoyable, more productive, and less mentally tiring. At least if they produce the cart correctly.
I wonder what good ole' Doc Kawashima over at Tohoku U. is thinking of this? Probably "THIS IS NOT STUDYING!! STUDYING SHOULD NOT BE FUN!!!!"
I guess I'm old fashioned, but I always thought the best way to get better at a standardized test was to take available tests, with studying in between. I did that for the SAT, AP exams, Physics GRE (the general exam is a joke; easier than the SAT), and even the horribly unstandard qual exams in my graduate program (admittedly, taking old qual exams is mostly unhelpful). The hardest thing about exams is figuring out what the questions are asking, which is why reading a book is rarely helpful. I've never used flashcards for studying, regardless, so I guess I'm not really the target demographic anyway.
goddammit that was my idea!!
*sigh*
I don't recall ever studying for the SAT, but I think I came out with a 1410...
I actually applied for a job at Kaplan once. My wife used to work as a tutor there.
@Cathaoir: I only got a 1300.
How do I reach these keeeds?
We need a test like this for Japanese students (the dictionaries out there are OK, but they lack hyperlinks for words that I don't understand in the definition).
Nintendo should think of it as an investment...
@sanjiyan:
Um, make that a DS tester, not a test. I got plenty of those already...
One with grammar testing and listening tests too...with downloadable content...
