Is Gamebryo the most powerful game engine available for the Wii? Polish developer Nibris seems to think so. They've tapped Gamebryo to power their upcoming black and white adventure game Sadness, and they're saying the engine lets them achieve the impossible on Nintendo's plucky little.
"Without a doubt, Gamebryo is the most powerful engine available for the Wii. After getting familiar with the engine several months ago we made the decision to choose Gamebryo. Since then, our team has been working on Sadness and we are quite impressed," said Tomasz Wisniowski, Project Manager of Nibris. "We will have quite a few graphical effects in our game, which some believe are impossible to attain on the Wii. Gamebryo helped make it possible. We are firmly convinced we made the right choice."So what exactly is impossible on the Wii? Well nothing now. Gamebryo has apparently ruined that for us, making it possible, therefor negating the whole impossible thing. Oh well, moving along.
Gamebryo Breathes Life Into Wii's First Black-And-White Horror TitleHighly-Anticipated Wii Game, Sadness, Chooses Emergent's Gamebryo
CALABASAS, Calif. (April XX, 2008) -Emergent Game Technologies announced today that the highly-anticipated psychological thriller Sadness for Wii™ is being built on the Gamebryo game development platform. The first Wii title to be presented entirely in black-and-white is in development by Poland-based game studio Nibris. Taking place prior to World War I, Sadness is a crime noir thriller with richly detailed characters and an engaging storyline.
We are firmly convinced we made the right choice."
"From the early stages of pre-production with Sadness, Nibris realized that they would need development technology that allowed for an extreme amount of flexibility in the creative process, which is a cornerstone of the Gamebryo framework," said Geoffrey Selzer, CEO of Emergent. "Sadness is designed to push the bounds of Wii technically and creatively. We are thrilled to be a part of Nibris' ground-breaking product. We're really looking forward to playing Sadness on Wii."
Gamebryo gives Nibris' developers a considerable head start by implementing numerous Wii development features that do not typically come with standard SDKs. Loaded with rendering and animation tools, a Wii-specific viewer, extensive libraries and APIs to simplify pipeline integration, Gamebryo provides Wii teams everything they need to optimize and deliver visually stunning games on time and on budget.
Sadness is a horror adventure game aimed at adults with strong nerves. Players will need to confront their greatest fears and protect themselves in hopes of not getting trapped inside the main character's nightmare. The game has eight different extreme endings each with their own premise, which are assigned to a player based on specific factors during the game. To compliment the intense gameplay, the Wii-mote and Wii Nunchuk control the main character's hands so players feel as though they are in the psychological thriller.

I'll believe it when I see it.
I thought this game became vaporware. I am hoping this game becomes awesome but, I won't hold my breath.
A likely story, Nibris.
Well FACTOR5 said that they engine was going to push the wii to its limits, lets see which one of these will win, and lets hope more devs puch the d@mn wii to the edge, its not going to break if they do it...
I'm really expecting some great stuff from this game. It's a must for me, right now... :D
So ... Sadness is real again?
No, really -- I keep hearing different things. It sounds interesting, so I am glad it's still moving forward.
Will Gamebryo bring competent online content to the Wii? That would be making the impossible possible.
Wow. The game I was hoping for from day one that disappeared forever. Maybe this will reinvigorate the library.
This game is going to be the most graphically amazing vaporware ever.
@karmaghost: I love your avatar, and the film that goes with it
I keep hoping this game will materialize. I guess we'll see. I'm also hoping to see what Factor 5 does with the Wii hardware. They managed to squeeze some amazing visuals out of the Gamecube and even though it's not 360 I'm sure with what little extra juice is in the Wii that Factor 5 can come up with something impressive.
What a strange press release. It sounds more like they're trying to plug Gamebryo than the actual game. Also, are we expected to believe that they can make a more graphically impressive game than Nintendo's own first-party games?
I see their marketing... don't show anything until the game is released! See: a lot of us are use to what a game looks like when it comes out.
Take Prey. They practically showed about 1/4 of the game in the demo/gameplay videos/screen shots. So then you knew what to do or what things would be like in certain point.
For once a game developer is doing something different to shock us when a game comes out.
"So what exactly is impossible on the Wii?"
Original games.
@karmaghost:
I second that statement.
I wonder if Sadness will get released on the Phantom as well...
Come to think of it, I wonder if Nibris is owned by Infinium Labs.
You can get away with visual fidelity by taking away elements of vision.
handling organic scenes:
* Modern 3D in color [F]
* Modern 3D in GoW filter [D]
* Modern 3D black&white [C]
* Modern 3D b/w + film grain filter [B+]
* Modern 3D in pure darkness [A+ uncanny valley crossed]
I'm happy to see people are making middle ware for the Wii. Hopefully the lesson in optimization in weaker hardware will yield even better performance on stronger ones.
If I can remember correctly, this is the first real news we've heard on the game in.... a year.
Thank God it's not dead yet.
I thought this game was canceled.. Nice to see it's not.
I like Mario and Link, but it will be cool to have a mature game on the Wii..
An "April XX" date on the press release, eh? Seems appropriate. While I'd like to believe this game will one day actually exist, my rational mind needs proof. "Our non-existent game makes the impossible possible!"
I bet without all those colors getting in the way they can really push those pixels!
(i am aware it makes no difference, best they could do is pump up the frame rate. Maybe an epic game of screenshots. Wii will never look AMAZING in 480p)
@lolgumshoe: i see wat u did thar
Pretty strong statement. I thought it would be something like Havok or FACTOR5's.
After hearing of the much delays I'm still a little interested to see where this game will ultimately go. Afterall they've spent a lot of time with the Wii and seem be the first company seriously at least TRYING to push the Wii to its limits.
I'll believe it when I see it. Or should I say IF. This game has like one trailer a couple of screens and the ability to have an on again off again relationship with the Wiintendo.
Nibris release anything in the past? Wiki doesn't give me answers
@jayntampa: I know right? I got a Wii just for it and Project HAMMER, HAMMERs dead and Sadness is the new DNF.
I was interested in this game when it was first announced, but like some of the others, I thought it had been canceled. It's nice to see some sort of news on it.
If sadness does come out, it should be awesome. I like the visual style, but haven't heard much else.
At least its in development though, right?
@SkutSkut:
except that this is more likely to come out before DNF
That game looks like it will be totally dank.
Black and white game? Color me interested!
you need a special kind of graphics engine to power a game that doesn't exist. it doesn't rely on pixels or shaders, but imagination!
Hey Nibris, where's "Raid Over the River"?
Wasn't it meant to be playable at E3 2006?
Oh, that's right... it was vapourware, just like everything else Nibris has promised.
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on Sadness, though. After all, they have claimed that a "major motion picture studio" has signed up to make a movie from their "epic script" for the game. So it must be real. No developer would be crazy enough to make claims like that if they weren't true.
I don't pretend to be a wiz when it comes to graphics, so I'm going to take this opportunity to ask a question that some of you might consider elementary.
Does rendering in a multitude of colours place extra burden on graphics cards? and if so, does that leave more graphics processing power in this game for other effects because this game is B&W?
My answer is probably not, since you are just displaying textures and not rendering in real time... is that assumption right?
Nibris is a tax scam.
Sounds interesting to say the least, from what I just read about it on Wikipedia. Def gotta check this game out when it's released.
"Gamebryo has apparently ruined that for us, making it possible, therefor negating the whole impossible thing. Oh well, moving along."
I've seen sadder. Posts.
The game is a lie
The game is a lie
The game is a lie
As long as it doesn't become a one word review.
This reminds me of a very bad PS2 game. I don't remember what it was called, but it was about a girl and a dog who ran away from scary stuff... that was it. You could try and fight back, but you would die 90% of the time. Anyone know what I am talking about? Well what ever, hopefully its not like that game, because that game really sucked and this game actually looks cool. Lets hope it doesn't suck! Yay for M-Rated games on the Wii! P.O.R. I did not buy the game, my friend made me play it.
Wow Nibris please quit lying to us and tell us you're full of shit, we can handle it :)
Fuckin right! Some sort of news!
This game will be diggity dankness.
Bullshit.
All Nibris has ever been, all it will ever be, is a river of fog, pure vapor. I don't know whose money they're pissing up the wall, but I sure as hell don't believe they're actually ever going to produce anything.
I look forward to playing Sadness on my Phantom.
@hotgarbage: Har har.
This does sound interesting, I hope something comes of it. We need more horror games on the Wii. How far off is the Fatal Frame game?
Can we start making bets on when (if ever) Sadness is released? XD
Seriously though, I hope that this title does finally make it to store shelves.
Wii has some mature games...
like...uh..Manhunt 2
and, uhm, No More Heroes...
and stuff like....METROID PRIME 3? Right? That's one, right?
Honestly, I had forgotten all about this. Of course, I do find it rather disturbing that they only just now acquired an engine for their game. Hopefully they can still put it together in a reasonable amount of time, otherwise may god have mercy on our souls.
Hmmm. Sounds mildly interesting, but somehow that press release did more to convince me that they have absolutely no clue what they're doing than the opposite.
Isn't Nibris working with CDProjekt(creators of Witcher) or I'm mistaking them for another Polish developer?
@CockroachMan: RE4 has women pinned to walls via pitch forks through the face.
I'm not really sure what more you want.
I really hope this game does some day come out some day. This idea for a game has almost been as long as DNF but not that long yet.
I do hope if it does come out it has some color like in Sin City. Like one of the guys shoes were red and the same with his car. That really helps make what the person making the game wanted you to look at.
This sucks that the game seems really interesting with a great idea. It is a shame that this game will probably never see the light of day.
That said it would be a great article to read in five years with the story of what ever happened to this game and why all the delays and empty promises.
Sadness is real?
Happiness...
@SilentPredator: Believe it or not that was completely unintentional lol
