Re: Commenting
A pretty rocky follow-up to a first week filled with commenter love and kudos. Thought we put out a lot of good stuff, but my execution was off. You know how a couple screwups create a rolling-thunder effect? Well, we had the problem with the modded Xbox controller publishing too early. Then I duped your Atari Catalog post and it stayed up. Then I boned it on the PS Store power outrage, gaffed the wording of a GTA IV poll and called it a day. Brian mentioned he gave me this job because he hates firing people. I hope he still feels that way.
Right now, I am going to go for a run and try to get my head on straight. All is not melancholy however. When I get back I'll be playing Bully and Ikaruga. And doing my taxes.
Here's some highlights from the weekend report:
NCSoft Shuts Down Illegal Servers
Live Gameplay Footage: Rufus, Street Fighter IV
How Are You Preparing for GTA IV's Arrival?
Understanding Free to Play
Super Smashing Proposal

Just one of those days.
Don't let it get to you, mate.
I'm with marioman on this one... you're doing fine, we all have some off days :) I've enjoyed the fresh perspective on the weekends (not that I don't love maggie's work... she always gets my thinking muscle working)
The site's still in one piece, so couldn't have been that bad. ;)
I'm sure even Brian didn't start at the top. Just make sure you learn from those missteps ;) .
No worries, we all have off days. I'll be honest and say that I didn't notice. :P
I think you're generally doing a great job. I find your posts compelling and outside of the norm. I look forward to seeing what you do next week = )
@Owen: Don't worry, we love you! I was tired of weekends getting kinda boring, and I feel like the little screw ups just make it that much more interesting.
It's all good. We've all been there a few times.
ahhh... taxes. Gotta love turbo tax online. Did mine in 40 minutes. As for deductions?... I had to get creative just to keep from paying this year. after software and processing fee, my federal refund is a cool $13. That's the price of procrastination folks :(
its alright man you did good..... heh that GTA4 post was Pretty confusing
Yea, don't worry about it, you'll get the hang of it! Take comfort in this: If we were going to lynch you, we probably already would have after today! ...And we didn't! ...OK, maybe that wasn't THAT comforting, but still. You've survived today, you'll be OK.
@slomo788: I'm sure he'll be quick to remind us that he is god here and he has been perfect since the beginning. I'm sure he'll claim himself to be the Chuck Noris of blogging: Brian doesn't make spelling mistakes but rather words are so afraid of him that they miss-spell themselves!
You're fine, man. Now I feel bad for mentioning the double-post.
If you wanna do some co-op on Ikaruga, my gamertag is listed in my profile. Send me a request with a message to remind me it's you and we'll get down on some dichromatic danmaku.
I've been checking more or less all day and didn't even notice anything was duped/screwed up so I think you're doing fine.
Dude, that's pretty much a normal day on Kotaku -- don't let it bother you. We're pretty used to duped stories, weird fudge up's, and the like. Overall, it was a pretty stellar weekend between you and Maggie!
@okenny :): Lol be careful, he might be listening...
Things happen, don't let it get you down.
I'll be playing Bully too, in between COD4 team deathmatches.
No worries Owen. Any mistakes you might have made were overshadowed by your enjoyable articles and writing style. Thanks for the work this weekend.
You've been doing a really nice job. It will take some time to get things down pat, it's only your second weekend with Kotaku. You had some good stuff going and that is all that matters.
Just look at it this way:
"At least I don't have explosive diarrhea."
Contrary to everyone else, I actually think your mistakes merited a release from the job. Such a glaring... OK, I can't keep this up. You have a game journalist's dream job and you worry about a few coding mistakes or whatever, bleh. We still love you.
Some of the editors mess up worse on a regular basis. ;) Hang in there, man. You're doing a great job.
Accidental reposts and the like are only important to the wet blankets out there; the kind of people who's only enjoyment in life is asking "how is this news?". I'll take a thousand of them over a slanted or badly written article, which I've seen none of yet.
So far it's all been quality work as far as I can tell.
We love you, Owen.
And besides, life is only fun when you're solving minor disasters. So if you're making your own, it's just keeping the site interesting.
Someone who cares about their mistakes should never be fired.
I'm enjoying your antics far more than the last intern, but don't tell anyone I said that.
P.S. you're genuinely a good writer whom I enjoy reading so those errors don't matter a pittance.
Doing your taxes AND playing Ikaruga?
Christ, getting fired would be a breeze compared to that.
@Samnub: Haha thanks, that made me laugh :).
Chin up. Next week will be a breeze. I think you've done a good job the last couple of weekends. Cheers.
Last minute taxes? Are there any other kind?
Don't worry about today. At least you didn't take down the whole site, yet.
Owen, you're doing great! The content this weekend has been varied and interesting. Don't let missing links or typos let you done, I'm sure your posts will be more refined next weekend!
If double-posts and miswordings are the worst you can do, you're not trying hard enough.
Dude, it's very obvious that you've been trying your absolute hardest on this gig. Why does a customer-oriented business scold or get rid of people? The people in question aren't serving the customers properly. But if Kotaku is a business of sorts and we are your customers, I don't hear anyone calling for you to be examined...I see you there scrambling out as many posts as you can on the weekends-not an easy task-and I appreciate it. So just quit feeling so pressured, eat some twizzlers and keep trying your best. Nobody's perfect, especially not in their opening weeks.
Hey Owen, no worries, I still think you've been a damn good editor thus far. Everyone makes screw ups, the important thing is your learning from there.
BTW you've probably got the superior sense of humor compared to all Kotaku editors
Yeah.....um Look...guy....this just isn't working out.... :-) No worries man, don't over analyze things, you're doing fine.
I take issue the talk-down-to-me language you use and your wonky, charmless lack of confidence.
But I know it's not an easy job, and you'll probably do better as you get a feel for it.
We mailed our taxes returns yesterday. Last year, I think we did it on the 15th, around 10pm. I thought I used to see dupes on this site all the time, but no one ever mentioned them in the comments. Maybe it was all in my imagination ...
I wouldn't worry about your performance. I just got my TA evaluations back last week, and the biggest complaint was that I was inexperienced! No shit! I told my students I don't know how many times that it was my first quarter teaching, ever. It got me thinking, either they wouldn't have noticed I was inexperienced if I hadn't said anything, or they didn't hear a word I said the whole quarter (one student admitted to this, and attributed it to my inexperience). Best suggestion ever? Don't teach until I learn to teach better! Awesome! Honorable Mention: bitching to me about course materials immediately after I told them not to (as if I could do anything about it).
YOu did well Owen *high five* Trust me your errors could never compare to mine. i always make a mistake but your mistakes are going to be more important then mine since you blog on KOTAKU! :D Either way good weekend. YOU TOO MAGGIE!
Yeah, what everybody else said.
It's kind of nice to see that Kotaku writers are falible, kind of makes you more relatable. I like you owen. Like, I LIKE you like you. >_>
: D
I thought you did fine. Loved seeing tons of new content on the weekends for once. Also enjoyed the Flash games getting posted. Keep up the good work!
For what it's worth, I was just thinking to myself earlier today how much better the weekend posts have been the past couple weeks. I think this weekend was just as good as the last.
You're just starting out :(
I laughed my ass off at all the mistakes I caught this weekend by I'm well aware you're noob. It wasn't that bad anyway.
Looking forward to more Kotaku weekends w/ Owen. Your last name is "Good" so it can't get to shitty. Right?
Owen, you're Good. (Pun most definitely intended) That's the last time you'll hear a name joke from me though, had to get it out of my system.
In other words, you'll get into the groove soon enough and all of us commenters are right here standing behind you!
And Maggie, your work has always been a good read.
Hey it's a blog, I don't think anyone expects perfection.
I got my eye on you Owen.
/Just said to even out the positive comments.
Ya did good, son.
But seriously, a few minor hitches is nothing to be too concerned about.
But tighten it up.
Nah, seriously, it's fine.
If you define "fine" as ridden with errors.
But really, nice job so far.
Owen Good, you're doing just fine.
@chrisagain:
*doing just fine.
I'm sure you're also fine as a person.
I didn't read Kotaku as much as usual this weekend, but I checked it out a few times.
I didn't even notice the errors. It all looked good to me, and I was impressed by the number of decent stories that were posted.
Owen, I was your biggest fan last week (I even emailed tips@kotaku praising your weekend work. But sorry but after the GTA4 poll I just can't see you writing here any longer.
Just pack your bags. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Next!
Owen, you fuck up!
Eh? I didn't notice any of that myself.
I'm calling for the immediate removal of Owen's head. I follow that motion with a request for the subsequent piking of said head, and display of the grisly trophy on the gates of Kotaku Tower in order to warn others of the punishment for typos on the internet.
Or, we can realize that shiat happens, and give the guy a break.
Naw, I like the pike thing better.
/any excuse for gratuitous violence
eheh just think of it this way owen...
even bush got two terms...i'm sure you couldn't have been any worse than THAT ;)
Taxes?
Who the hell does taxes?
My friend, you havent lived until you learn the meaning of Tax Evasion.
^_^ oh shi-
i think you did a fine job owen
I think you are doing a fine job Mr. Good. It's not like you accidentally banned every member of the site or something.
I went away for a weekend, and I came back to a single-comment multi-tap, and a previous entry about the death of intelligent discourse on Kotaku.
I have to ask, When are you going to lock the gates of this haunted house and start axing the brain-damaged teenagers?
The world needs more horror movie metaphors.
Owen, dude! No hanging of heads. Any job takes a while to start to click and hum smoothly, and better that you made a couple of minor (and largely unnoticed) gaffes in your second weekend than in your first, ya?
You (and Maggie, who always comes up with with really interesting and offbeat links) are already giving weekend Kotaku its very own special flavor. Chin up, chest out, soldier on! And no more fishing expeditions for compliments to soothe your frayed ego, you silly turd.
Remember these words from Batman Begins:
"Why do we fall down, sir? So that we might learn to pick ourselves up."
You're doing great... just stay away from any RE5 posts and you'll be fine.
Don't worry Owen, everyone has that bad day. We still love you
@code.monkey: Truer words haven't been spoken.
Nah man, you did a great job!
Bah, if Brian fires you, I will protest.
Like everyone else has said, it undoubtedly takes some time to get your groove workin.
Are you a little sensitive, Owen? :D
I haven't noticed any missteps or failed executions. From what I've seen you're rising to the top of the writing ranks. Keep it up!
I never would of noticed if you hadn't said anything.
As far as I'm concerned, you and Maggie are wonderful additions to the Kotaku Krack Writing Krew.
You're doing good; you fit in well with the Kotaku staff.
You worry too much, Owen! Things are still up and running fine at the ole kotaku-homestead, so don't beat yourself up about it!
