MSNBC has a feature up: The top 5 games to play before you go to bed. This means PSP and DS games, mostly, unless you pass out on the couch after a marathon session on your console. They seem to be looking for mental challenges to tucker your brain out so you go straight to slumberland.
The games: Brain Age 2 (DS), Me & My Katamari (PSP), Clubhouse Games (DS), Lumines II (PSP) and Nintendogs (DS). All cute, all wuvable, all games a corporate media company can recommend kids play under the covers without their parents going blasto and writing the government.
MSNBC wants readers to comment, but I'll totally bigfoot that and pop the question here: What's your favorite game to play before you go to bed? Console or handheld. I like to cuddle up with Manhunt 2. Sweet dreams.
Top 5 Games to Play in Bed [MSNBC]

Comments
You like Manhunt 2 for sweet dreams, I like Leisure Suit Larry for wet dreams.
I've been playing Picross DS nearly every night before I go to sleep since the game came out late last summer.
I love that game so much.
Chances are, I'm usually playing the game I last bought before I go to bed. Though I have to say, that wasn't such a good idea when the last game I had bought was Resident Evil 4.
Those Regenerators? Couldn't sleep for a week.
Lately my "before bed" gaming has gone to 'Advance Wars: Days of Ruin'.
New York Times crosswords. It makes me feel smart.
I own all of those games on that list, except any form of Lumines (which has been on my "to get" list).
And yet, I sleep horribly at night.
MSNBC IS A PACK OF LIES.
Tetris DS for me.
I like to slap an episode or two of Family Guy on my DS and watch that.
Reading. The best bedtime game ever.
I've been recently playing Vice City Stories before going to bed. It's made for quite the interesting dream line-up.
I don't know why, but I have violent, bizarre dreams whenever I sleep after a light game like MSNBC's picks and rhythm games keep me up, so I guess violence is the key. I still think Halo is my most calming game, with most Caslevania games in second.
Does Porno count? LOl Actually I PLay CS Source till I get so fed up by hackers I go to bed pissd.
I have all those games at the moment...except for Nintendogs. Too much daily play needed.
I have a Sudoku game for my DS. That's been a big go-to before beddy-bye time for me. :)
I refrain from puzzle games before bed. Those sessions sometimes go for longer than intended. Ever have a surprisingly good game of Lumines? Who wants to stop after that?
I'll usually pop in something more finite. There was a stretch of time when King of Fighters XI and Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum were my sleep aids. Also, any of the Gundam vs. games out there. Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam would be limited to something like two or three scenarios in UC Mode, or I would just play through an arcade scenario on Zaft vs. Union II.
Truth be told, none of these should actually be played before bed if you're trying to relax. If you've been in bed for a while but can't sleep, then it's advisable to read a book (or play a short game) for about 15-20 minutes.
I do a bit of Crisis Core right before bed. Handhelds are fun just before crashing, or when you can seem to go to sleep.
Haven't played it before bed yet, but I always enjoy fl0w to chill out and de-stress. Nearly all my other video games are skill intensive to some degree, so having a simple, pressure-free and frankly visually and aurally gorgeous game is a wonderful thing.
Ooh, Tetris DS would definitely be pretty kickass. For me though, there are two games.
Sonic 2K6, which bores and frustrates me to the point that I get exhausted, especially since I've been going through Silver's game lately.
Or Team Fortress 2, which I just stay up playing 'til 7 in the morning.
One's more fun, one's more effective.
It varies, but I'll usually play a fighting game before I go to bed. One I can finish in half an hour, like Marvel vs. Street Fighter or MK: Deception, is perfect.
I've yet to try Lumines 2 but loved the first. Should I check it out?
@rbelmont000: I totally agree. Picross DS is damn near perfect for pre-sleep. Also, even though it's not Me & My Katamari, I play the original Katamari a lot before bed. The music...the music!
@KrsJin: Double post. I'm surprised fl0w wouldn't be a top 5. If I had to choose a game to play in order to relax and prep for bed, it would bet hat.
I used to play Clubhouse Games before bed, but now it is Picross DS all the way. I start off with a Normal puzzle and then usually doze off trying to solve a Free puzzle.
Animal Crossing lately. At night, there's really only so much you can do, so I don't get involved in the game and end up playing it for 5 hours.
@amadeus3000:
I agree with you there. I <3 reading.
for me silent hill Origins is the best bedtime story of all.
play it all dark and some kikc ass headphones and you'll see what i mean
I agree, games like Brain Age 2 (DS), Clubhouse Games (DS, and Nintendogs (DS) will all definitely put me to sleep.
I usually play Audiosurf before going to sleep because it's just too awesome, which is funny because it has a disclaimer that says specifically not to play when drowsy.
ha sorry for the typo!
@Edwinik: Exactly the reason why I won't be playing it before bedtime. Those horror games always get to me. :-D
Its usually w/e game I currently am playing or recently bought. So for me, its Crisis Core or Ninja Gaiden DS right now...
Books, or Castlevania: Circle Of the Moon on the Advance, usually books.
I'm there with Scazza, I play the most recent games I have bought, so for me it is Crisis Core, GoW:CoO and Patapon
@Spoiler Duck: Fl0w would be an awesome game to play before bed. I tend to almost fall asleep while playing it alone. The music is so calm, a long with the gameplay. Cept when it's multiplayer, then it gets intense.
Before bed, I tend to read a book, or play a nice few rounds of pokemon
@Scazza: - "Its usually w/e game I currently am playing or recently bought."
The same goes for me.
I play Animal Crossing when I'm insomniac.
I play call of duty online until I pass out... almost every night too
There's nothing like a good round or two of Team Fortress 2 before bed.
I generally play my DS just before going to sleep. Right now it's "Front Mission DS". I spend time upgrading, doing fights, and messing around in the arena for cash. Right when I realize I'm sleepy and before I convince myself to push past it to keep playing I just send the DS to "sleep", which I immediately follow.
GoW is a good option too.
but 0rigins is still my No. 1 pick
@dead_red_eyes, amadeus3000: I stopped reading before bed after I dreamt having sex with Nessus from Ringworld. *shudder* I only read during the day now.
Poor Meteos, it didn't make the list while Lumines did. I personally find myself playing that game before I fall sleep all the time. Such an addicting game, and to an extent, it's relaxing to mercilessly beat the computer right before bed time!
The list seems as though it is a good one, but I personally don't want to be "Training my Brain" before I fall asleep. The last thing I want to do after a long day of school or work is play Brain Training. That's okay, I train my brain long enough during the day.
no silent hill origins?
I try to avoid playing games before sleep. I find that my brain keeps working after playing a game and I can't fall asleep. Usually I try watching some TV or reading a little before bed, which are more passive activities.
Gotta agree with whoever said flOw, it has that really relaxing atmosphere about it and is a great de-stresser.
these are my top five:
Assassins Creed
Gears of War
God of War
Ninja Gaiden
Condemned
Jet Set Radio Future, because it's easy enough to play when tired, but difficult enough to tire you out further. Plus, it's all so laid back and relaxing. The music puts me to sleep.
Lately it's been a few mission in Crisis Core for me.
for me it was always JSRF and Katamari and Pokemon
When I got the Phoenix Wright games, I would play them in bed till I got tired, closed it up and went to sleep. Shame the ride is over. :/ Need to get Apollo soon.
@Erwin:
Hahaha!
DUDE! OWEN! SERIOUSLY!
I totally couldn't f'n sleep last night, so I was like, shnike, what do I do to fall asleep??
I picked up my PSP for a round or two of Patapon, when I felt I was satisfied, I put it back down, and went straight to sleep!
So creepily odd that I find this post upon waking....
Animal Crossing: Wild World is the ultimate cure for insomnia. It works for me every time, when I'm tucked into bed with the lights off.
DJ Max Portable for me.
Sadly however it keep me up instead of helping me sleep.
It used to be Animal Crossing on the GC for me.. but now I rarely play anythng before I go to bed apart from the most recent game I bought
generally I read, but for a while i was playing phoenix wright games right before bed because it mostly felt like i was reading!
@LedRush: try any of the Silent Hill games before going to bed.
