Alright, well, this had me last night, but now I am not so sure. And while I was dithering over whether the video here is in fact real, or a fake, I missed out on an actual leak of an actual trailer for the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars. And it was taken down from YouTube before I could save the video.
But this has been up for a solid two days, Rockstar hasn't demanded it be taken down (could they? I dunno) and the comments on its YouTube page point out a zillion problems with it. But what do they know? It is time for Kotakopolis to pass judgment: Is this real or is this fake? You make the call! Vote after the jump.
Arguments Pro:
It's got a case!
Immigrant's Guide to Liberty City
I WANT TO BELIEVE
Arguments Con:
Convenient transition right as 360 boots
Gameplay or it's fake
Music sucks
Rockstar hasn't bothered to get YouTube to take it down

It's look legit to me, but I'm not sure how he/she got a copy.
Real.
Is the GTA IV Intro Video Real or Fake?
Yes or No? I think the poll should be reworded. ;P
its real their really is no point faking the intro is their?
2006 Rockstar Games Inc @ 3:17 ? lol
lol all i can say the music better not suck that badly.
I say real. I don't think it's a transition so much as he turns on a light. I could be wrong though.
it looks real enough, but wow thats dull
I don't think someone would put THAT much effort into a faked GATIV intro, so I say it's real.
it's real, guys.
That's real, but a poor choice of music for the opening.
@TheCheese33: LoZ spoof movie...?
the creator of this movie has confirmed that it's fake on gtaforums
I would believe it's real if the guy recording freaking let us see what was beyond that load bar.
it's too elaborate to be fake.
I think its fake. Has it even gone gold yet?
i want to see gameplay, why stop when its almost done loading. enough with intros we want to see gameplay. gameplay or didnt happen. lol
It might be real, but its very boring. Reasons to think its fake are the gray strip on the bottom of the screen and the fact that it is playing on a PC monitor. Also do the European discs not have the clear part in the center?
It's fake, albeit a great fake.
The disc has no hologram in the middle, like every 360 disc has.

Also, on the side of the box case, you can notice that he basically slipped the title in. It's almost impossible to notice in the video, but noticeably when paused:

What this intro is in reality is a modified version of the San Andreas intro running off a DVD, right down to the loading bar at the end.

[gamerush.zoomshare.com]
"After an unnecessary cut to the camera pointing at the screen, the intro itself contained an odd choice of music. Moreover, all of the pictures are from previously shown artwork, while official GTA intros contain cinematic scenes, like San Andreas.
All that, coupled with the fact that the person who made and posted the video on YouTube claimed to withhold any gameplay footage so that it wouldn't "ruin the game for you," is all we need to know."
Also:
"First of all, the credits. The crew is EXACTLY the same as that from the introduction to San Andreas. I can imagine Rockstar is a relatively tight-knit family, and who would give up what for many developers would the dream job of working for them? But things change, San Andreas is four years old and I doubt there is a company on the planet that hasn't changed just a little in the last 4 years.
Secondly, the style is exactly the same as that of San Andreas. The only difference is the artwork used; this video uses still images as opposed to the video clips in the SA intro. Furthermore, all the images included are from the already available promotional artwork, are Rockstar really cheap enough to recycle all that old imagery?
Third, the video refuses to show any gameplay footage. Anyone with the time and effort to waste could produce an authentic-ish looking introduction movie to the game, but the gameplay is one thing that would take some real skill to fake, so why bother? If I had the game and the will to spoil it for everyone, I would at least let my character spawn for a brief second before cutting the video.
And finally, the most obvious one. There's no Xbox 360 security hologram (example) on the disc the camera man shows so proudly. The hologram is present on every 360 game disc to show the buyer they have purchased an authentic copy of a game, meaning the copy shown in this video is fake beyond any doubt.
There's always the chance that all this is ruse from Rockstar, nothing gets the gaming community more excited than leaked info. In which case I am just a pawn in Rockstar's game of marketing chess."
I'm saying fake on account of the Spine of the case. All Rockstar games have a designed spine, rather than plain writing.
oh and you can see that the silver Xbox ring is missing on the disc. (you know, the one around the hole)
Sorry if I ruined everything this Kotaku entry with that post, btw. :P
A couple things to note:
He doesn't have his gamer tag loaded. Fine and all, probably doesn't want a lot of messages and friend requests, but then there's this:
"He doesn't actually have it. His Gamertag is Toasty411. Same as his YouTube account. It doesn't show him playing GTA4 on his previously played games list. This is just a well created fake."
Considering there's only one profile on that 360, well, *shrug*
Scratch "everything" in my last post. Damn Kotaku and its lack of an edit button!
a) I liked the song.
b) The disc has no hologram around it's center, therefor it's not a retail copy like the guy wants us to believe.
Also, they're obviously going to make the intro different than the last 3 games in the series. For the number of times they've said that GTAIV is trying to separate itself from it's past iterations, they're not going to make it look exactly like the last 3 intros.
@i_lie_to_fit_in:
Actually it's exactly elaborate enough to be a fake. The slow lingering box shots but not quite showing the back details, or manual. The hacked San Andreas loading screen and the loading bar tease.
If you look really carefully, some of the images used during the opening had promotional text still on them. ie. These were taken from the internet.
I'm calling fake on this, it's an elaborate fake, but a fake none-the-less.
Well I do know one thing Xbox360 fans have small TVs, has anyone noticed? That everytime you see a Xbox vid its on a small tv when ever you see a PS3 vid its on a flatscreen or on some projector.
The fact that it booted up right away. Made a alarm in my head start up. FAKE. Sorry but it really is
That is a well done fake. He put a lot of time into that for a few hits on youtube.
@Soy Bob:
To be fair, while this is fake, I believe that PAL games have that same sort of plain writing on the side.
He only really made a couple of mistakes, but they were enough.
Its probably real it would be that hard to get a copy if you worked for gamestop or any other retailer. Especially if you were like the manager or something but from that small tv he probably stole it.
Fake, I shall list why.
1. The box, the boxes now on the right side don't say Xbox Live anymore, they just say Live.
2. The disc, the discs also have changed, they say Xbox 360 Live instead of Xbox 360 and Xbox Live divided by a line.
3. The disc again, it doesn't have the silver ring around the hole in the center with the Xbox logo, definite fake disc.
4. The binding? At least make it black, we aren't stupid.
Aside from everything said above, the game is out in about 2 weeks, it's perfectly feasible for some store clerk to take one home early.
Heck, I took home Halo 3 about a week and a half early to finish the campaign with a friend. If I didn't quit last September after Halo came out, I probably would take this bad boy home as well.
what a cheap ass, that taint no GTA4 intro. Poorly done. And the case and disc are pretty fake.
"4. The binding? At least make it black, we aren't stupid."
To be fair as well, the disc art and cover slip were made from the PAL version, their box art isn't always the same as the NTSC versions.
... I liked the music...
*shrugs*
REAL STAMP OF APPROVAL
some retail stockboy.
@Owen Good:
Just ask Crecente?
Fake. 360 game disks don't have labels which goto the center (well they don't in North America, do they in Europe?)
Fake. Y'know why? Every BBFC 18 rated game in the UK in recent years has had a MASSIVE 18 logo in the bottom left corner, look at Bioshock and GTA: SA for proof. The 18 on that box is tiny, and of all the games that'd have the big 18 logo on the front of the box, it'd be GTA IV.
Yeah, that did bother me a bit. The music, while not the best choice, wasn't that terrible. What would you consider a good intro song?
Hey Owen. This what you were looking for? [www.liveleak.com]
Real and its the eurpoean version. Note the disc says 18 on it which is the euro age to play.
Also why wouldnt it be real? Its not like games havent been leak two weeks early before.
Though i would have liked some game play, but again thats alot of effort to go into faken something that everyone will see in two weeks
Why don't people ever talk during these unboxings and such? The fact that only their breathing is audible makes it seem really creepy, like stalker-creepy.
No security hologram on disk...
I'm calling fake. If this was a legit copy of the game, he'd be retarded not to show actual gameplay. ...And if it's not a fake: GTA4: $50 GTA4 2 weeks early: $50 + Risk of losing job, getting sued, etc. GTA4 2 weeks early and playing on a tiny SDTV: Priceless
@ gamedismantler: Exactly what i was thinking..... plus knowing RockStar they would choose a way better song than that i mean come on......plus has anyone ever seen Actual ingame like walking around and such yet? i haven't
Does anyone find it weird that TakeTwo's logo didn't show up at all?
Sadly... fake. After much examination... there's just too much done wrong for it to be "real". And too many "convenient" things left out. Such as... not actually getting a good look at that manual... not getting a REALLY good look at the case artwork, the lack of a silver ring, etc. All of that is missing. So... yeah. Fake.
I'm a little confused on what to vote for.
The question is, "Is the trailer real?"
But one of the answers is "Yes, it's fake as hell"
@okenny :): Not when you realize it's fake.
@jynxycat: But to be consistent with the rest of the box why would they make ONLY the binding of the case white?
Bravo kid you made the internet squirm.
Too fake to be real ^^
@Schoolimangooli: Lol, that's what my post was going to say. He got a hands on with the game (lucky guy).
This is most definitely fake and already proven to be fake but it was neat to see nonetheless.
@Candlejack: I can understand what you've just wrote.
There's no hologram on the game disc.
IT'S FAKE!
the first thing I noticed was that the booklet in the gamecase was just one slip of paper. If the game is as huge as rockstar claims it is, then everyone knows the manual will be huge because they have to explain to the children how to virtually kill people and tell them to try it in real life so jack thompson can get more air time on Fox News. What? Thats what Jack and Fox seem to believe...
I imagine the poll will be off a ways. At first, comment said real or fake ... then it asked if it was real. With the option of "Yes" being "Fake as hell". Seems like it was just changed to Fake. :/
I call shenanigans. I don't know much about box art and holograms, I'm just basing this off the fact that it's too lame to be real.
Pause @ 25 seconds and you'll get a clear view of the LACK OF THE HOLOGRAM ON EVERY XBOX 360 GAME TO PROVE ITS AUTHENTICITY.
Fail. LOL
@Erwin: Whoops, wrong link. I'll find the one I meant to soon. I hope.
The poll options don't make sense at all. Owen must be smoking some good hashish, over there.
the question is wrong when have to vote.
When already voted the question appears right ¬¬
Is the GTA IV Intro Video Real?
yes / no
Is the GTA IV Intro Video Fake?
yes% / no%
@Schoolimangooli: I'm sorry, the formatting got screwed up. No idea why. Let me try again. I hope it works this time. ...And if it's not a fake: GTA4: $50 GTA4, 2 weeks early: $50, risk of losing job, getting sued GTA4, 2 weeks early and playing on a tiny SDTV: Priceless
