Just a reminder, the Playstation Network Store will be down from 8 am to 9 pm US Pacific Time (11 am to midnight, US Eastern, and 9 am to 10 pm Crecente). This is for the widely anticipated update to the Playstation Store.
So all you unemployed gamers and kids playing hooky, don't start raining ZOMG WAT HAPPEND TO PSN messages on us. Besides, everyone should be doing their taxes.
How much worse can I fuck things up this weekend ...
As Playstation's ever-helpful Knowledge Center dryly describes the power outrage:
During this time, the new PLAYSTATION®Store upgrade will be taking place. As a result access to the PLAYSTATION Network will be restricted, including:* No access to the PLAYSTATION®Store
Oh. Is ... that all?

Aaand Europe?
Does that mean online play as well? DAMMIT! I was going to play Resistance all day.
You forgot Central time.
If you're unemployed, doing your taxes should be pretty darn easy.
yea taxes, that's what ill be doing...
@Amazon_Chris: The store should not affect online game play.
Uhh... The way I read the article, it looks like only the PLAYSTATION Store is going to be down... as it specifically states "Other PLAYSTATION Network features should not be affected"
my ps3 is broken this morning, no audio and video just HD spinning. Darn it it's not even 2 years yet
Outrage is probably the most appropriate misspell for outage in this case ever.
i did my taxes ages ago
@Amazon_Chris: You're good for online play. In fact, PSN isn't down at all, that article title is extremely misleading. The Playstation Store won't be available tomorrow and that's the only thing that's happening.
Okay. Good.
sigh ... fixing :(
@Playstation: You should try plugging it with the AV cables. You might have put the default settings back while turning it off last time you used it.
So I guess this means the store will be up and running everywhere on tuesday. I like this move because should anything go wrong it'll give Sony a day or two to fix before the regular thursday update.
@Owen Good: It's ok you're just starting ;)
@slomo788:
You can also hold down the power when you turn the system on. It will revert to the default resolution settings. My launch system bit it a few months after I got it. The second system I got has been going strong since.
Make sure you back up your saves and stuff every once in a while. You can redownload games, but you can't get saved games back if they send you a new system.
@Owen Good: We love you anyway, Owen!
@CaptLtrl:But if you turn it on with your controller the settings will stay default. This happened to me earlier this week actually.
lol but that "outrage" is there on purpose? I'm sorry if I'm making your big vein pop, Owen.
oh geez this couldn't have come sooner.... I hate the current store. I have a HD tv and I can't read anything on it...
Does that mean that the new firmware/store update is going to go live at 12:01am EST on Tuesday morning?
I can't imagine they would schedule downtime for the store all day Monday and then bring it back up in the early hours of Tuesday morning with the old store interface. Looks like I might be staying up late Monday.
@WickedOrange: OK good, I'm not alone. I know my glasses need better lenses, but... DAMN! That print is tiny!
This update is well overdue. Looks good in motion, but I can't wait to test drive it myself.
Wait no online tomorrow.... well since its the 1st day after spring break ill have tons of homework.....
Did my taxes almost a month ago.
Never see what the big deal is anyway, put all your T4 info into the tax program forms, skip the N/A stuff, print and enjoy a beer.
Course I'm in Canada, I think we probably don't have to declare half the stuff you Americans do...
@IntelSilver: On purpose. My dad says it all the time.
Also calls Chap-Stik "Lip Blam."
I already spent all my tax money a few weeks back.
Hmm CMT = Crecente Mean Time
finally ps store gets more like 360 and wii. Bout time.
Wait... no access until the 17th? FUCK! I guess I'll have to get that thing I was saving for immeadletly instead of tomorrow...
Owen.
You're doing agreat job. After a week of asshattery in Kotaku, you managed to post a few articles that had some good conversations going, I found the whole discussion that stemmed from the issue of colourblind gamers to be the most informative thing I've read here in a while.
And now you've got people discussing the merits of René Magritte.
Taxes? I spent my refund months ago...
@LedRush: touche! I doubt I used that right.
Do they really have to restrict access to the PSN for a Store Update? I need my daily Warhawk fix!
@dry-roasted-peanuts: I spent mine so fast, it was like it didn't even exist in the first place.
@Playstation:
Check your cables -- the A/V gets loose if you have small animals including children chewing/tripping over cords. Also set your monitor to the correct input. This is why HDMI rules. One cable with a much better physical interface too. 1080p with better color is nice too. ;)
@Owen Good: With practice, we'll start calling you Owen Great.
@slomo788:
Oh I forgot to mention *how to people that don't read manuals in my post.
You can't see video output and you want to shutdown:
Shutdown the running console by pressing over the power button on front of the console. It's optical just hold your finger over the symbol it doesn't depress. After a few seconds it'll power down.
*Never just flip the switch in the back -- you'll possibly corrupt your HDD if you do it enough.
Booting up with A/V 'reset':
* Press the optical power button and continue to press until you hear a beep. A/V will be reset to both HDMI and Composite ( yellow plug ). You can now adjust your input from either of those.
eg If you use Component set it up from Composite now, etc. If you have the option switch to HDMI you can get cables for as cheap as $5, and SONY branded cables are only $15-$20 if you must have a pretty one with matched colors. The color quality is better, and you get better resolution in some cases.
@TheCheese33:
Just remember all the newer content will be the 17th,but the store goes live the 15th.Nothing really changes on the content front.
@Playstation:
My friends BluRay drive crapped out on him. Even though it was a used one from eBay, Sony took it back free of charge and sent out a new one. The only they charged him for was for the original cables that came with it (he had lost them when he moved). So it only cost him about $12.
Just call them up, you'd be surprised what they'll replacde for you.
sweet I wonder if we will get anything (like a gift lol i would love a gift)but then again we are getting a new PSN store so that should be more than enough
I got to ask how often do ps3 crap out like whats the percentage such as 5 percent out of 100?? Been hearing thats the ratio from numerous sites and even from playstation.
@Owen Good: Things will get better some day :)
@Amazon_Chris: Online will be fine, its just the store.
not complaining at all, but how can a small upgrade take about 9 hours?
I hope this doesn't wipe my achievements!!!
@GregoriRasputin:
It's very low..Nothing like what a lot of rumors are going around..Maybe like 5 out of 500 if anything.
@superaktieboy:
It's not a small upgrade,new art assets,move all the content over,update prices,changes..put video previews up on each link,test,etc
I don't mind it. It's about time they start improving things.
I did my taxes in Feb. and got my money in mid March. And besides who the fuck goes to the PS store?
@Sailorcancer:
People who buy Rock Band songs? (before they added an in-game store)
People who download trailers and demos?
People who download free themes and wallpapers?
People who're generally interested in DLC?
Yay! A new store! But it still won't have any content!
C'mon Sony! Get with the program DL media is where it's at. Sony could beat the XBox on this if only they got aff their asses. I DL movies on the 360 2-3 weekends a month. I would absolutely use my PS3 for this if only they would offer 1080P downloads, and option to own instead of rent. Honestly, the 360 has the PS3 beat on anything and everything online related, which is why my PS3 is STILL just a blu-ray player.
Owen - it's like they hired the new guy, said "we're going out of town for the weekend" and left you the keys.
So don't sweat the small stuff. You're doing just fine, with a record number of posts in a row. Nicely done. Really, GREAT job so far. I'm enjoying the stories you're posting.
Hmm...maybe it's time to pull ol' Bernie out of the closet for the weekend! Party at Kotaku!
:)
That Sony Knowledge thing is really helpful ^_^
