Grand Theft Auto IV has been on pre-order in my Amazon account ever since I got laid off last May and bought a lot of crap with my severance. The original release date was, what, October? At that time I thought I'd still be looking for work, and GTA is one of the great unemployed game franchises of all time. But fortunately (or not, if you have really distorted priorities) I have a job now.
So, I'm seriously considering taking a day off of work April 29, or whenever it gets here. I made an ultra-quick decision on a new apartment just so I could be fully moved in by the time it arrives. Ordinarily, I never leave a forwarding address, just to give bill collectors the slip. I will this time just in case it gets sent to my old address after I leave. And there are other little subtle things going on that, at root, are preparations for the arrival of this mammoth game.
I'm not a father and I'm about a thousand miles from even enjoying the essential act of that, lately. But it's rather like a young couple welcoming baby into their home. Except baby packs combat shotguns, rocket propelled grenades, brass knuckles, etc.
So what are you doing to prepare for Grand Theft Auto IV? Flaked on family plans? Ditching work? Are you revisiting earlier titles? Finishing up any side missions to get to 100 percent? Revisiting any street races? (That reminds me, I still haven't played "Beat the Cock" in San Andreas ...) Let us know in the comments.

Probably stocking up on Diet Pepsi and various snacks. Gonna be fun!
I'm thinking about other things, not being that enthusiastic about it. When I do get it I'm sure I'll be blown away. Same goes for MGS4. But right now I'm too busy playing Jet Set Radio ^_^
I can delightfully report that i have no urge to prepare for anything.
This game will be freely available eventually, at which point i will probably buy it.
I love GTA, but it's no religion, like Thief or Bioshock was for me.
I bought a psp and have been playing vcs and lcs. Expensive but I needed to satisfy the craving.
By playing Mario Kart Wii
I played through Vice City and San Andreas over the past 2 months.
Playing GTAIII. So when I get GTAIV I'll appreciate it even more. Plus I've been on the last mission since 2002 and I keep saying to myself. I'll get to it, but I just end up using codes to unlock all the weapons and seeing how long I can avade the cops.
Took the day off work. Not much else planned.
I'm making sure I've got plenty of coffee and energy drinks prepared, and that my 360 is actually working so that it doesn't red ring while playing GTA4. If it does, however, I am running out and buying it for my PS3. I'm prepared for anything.
I'll probably get a little crack rock, or some sherm ... that way I can stay up for 4 days straight to beat it.
Nothing!!!
I've never been a huge GTA fan. Played GTA3, VC and San Andreas a little bit, but never completed them.
Will be buying, but it's not a MGS4 or Halo title excitement for me!
Hope everyone else enjoys it though!
I'm preparing by not intending to buy it.
Might check out frontlines or conan.
I've been taking pictures of myself to give to family and friends, because when GTA comes out, they won't be seeing me for a long ass time.
I'm helping plan an indie comics festival here in Portland, Oregon the weekend before Mario Kart Wii and GTA hit, so I'll be socialized to death juuuust in time to spend the following week cocooned in a web of anti-social, stay-at-home-and-do-nothing-but-play-games-for-12-hours-straight goodness.
I have the 28th off to mentally prepare myself and stock up on essentials, (beer + snacks). I'll be there for the midnight release so I have the 29th off too. Then, just in case I'm exhausted from all the gaming, I booked the 30th off too. I've also convinced 2 other mates to do the same, so there'll be some serious 3up drivebys going on in liberty city those days.
My off-days from work are usually Sunday-Monday, so I had them moved to Tuesday-Wednesday. Rest assured, I will be at that damn GameStop at midnight.
Is it alright to say I'm doing nothing? And that in fact I'm not even considering buying it?
I played VC when it hit bargain bin, and it was fun to mess around with for a couple days, but overall nothing fantastic.
Maybe I'll rent IV for PS3 sometime, and if it's fun enough pick it up when it gets down in price.
Preparing for GTAIV?
Uh...right...I'm preparing by, um...waiting for the superior version to be released on PC in a few months from now. YEAH! YEAH!
Nice.
I'm taking a week off work i'll be stocking up on supplies the days before the 29th so i don't have to go to the shop. I'm actually working the 29th so i don't just sit at home waiting for the mailman.
Yes, i'm serious about this. Although i needed a week off work anyway.
I get Tuesdays off... which happens to work out just fine for me :p
Oddly I dreamt about it yesterday, and whereas before I was mildly hyped, I now can't wait for it.
Rockstar are invading our minds!
I already booked off June 12-13 from work so I can play MGS4. If Sony decides to bring the GTA4 PS3 bundle to North America then I'm going to see if I can book of April 29 as well. I sure hope this happens!
@theTOMSTA666: hahahaha
Well, i bought a 360 on april 1st, first time i ever bought a different console than a Nintendo one. I bought it so i could play GTA4.
What special preparations will i make??? Nothing new, just gonna go and buy it on the weekend or maybe on the weekdays, not sure. No preorder or anything, i know that if i walk to a Walmart, it is gonna be there xD
Shoot, preparing? I knew there was something else I was procrastinating other than schoolwork.
This is the first GTA I'll actually be purchasing. My preparation will be preordering the game today after work.
I'll be preparing for GTAIV by playing the hell out of Persona 3: FES, thus accomplishing my goal of ignoring GTAIV completely.
No prep needed. It will be months of great gaming at my pace.
A new GTA game is religious experience. First you hold the brand new game in your hands, feeling it's heft, studying every inch of the box while letting your imagination run wild considering the adventures in store. Then you open the box. The manual and map are the next items to receive close examination, as they often give hints to the true feel and tone of the game, which each GTA connoisseur knows can vary greatly.
Cardboard is placed in the windows to prevent that pesky sunlight from degrading your viewing experience. All forms of outside communication are severed. The sound is cranked up to unreasonable levels. It's time to pop that sucker in. The Rockstar logo pops up, and you know your friends and coworkers will most likely call you in as missing but you don't care. You can declare yourself un-dead after you hit 100%
I am preparing by waiting for the announcement of a PC version.
I'm gonna make sure I'm ready for the courier to arrive at my door and I'm gonna drop everything and dedicate the rest of the day to finishing the game as fast as possible.
I wanna get high on that "first to complete the game" list and get a key to the city. Rockstar are arseholes for doing that, God dammit. I'm tempted to buy the shitty censored Australian version just to get a couple of days headstart...
I don't prepare, I wait.
Ok, that was kind of lame. To be honest, I'm not much of a fan of Grand Theft Auto, anyways.
Im going to be doing the pose from Platoon when I find out the 360 version is "region locked" ;D
I have no urge to play GTA IV. I haven't liked a GTA game since III. It's been the same game all the time, but with more features added on.
I am feeling optimistic about GTA IV, but I am not inclined to play it.
Hi everyone. Longtime reader, first time poster. I'm taking the 30th off, especially since I'm planning to go to a midnight launch party and pick up my LE version of the game. I like the idea of stocking up on munchies and soda, gotta add that to the list.
I'm preparing for GTA IV by buying Persona 3 FES.
GTA just doesn't interest me that much.
Replayed through the missions I liked a lot in Saints Row and then picked up and played through Bully on 360 (Only one crash from beginning to end.)
I'll probably pick San Andreas up in the days just before the release.
@Sunjammer: Someone needed to say it.
Grand Theft Auto 4 will most likely be a fun game but it's not the "end of all games," as some people are painting it out to be.
I've completed my shrine recently, complete with all albums, posters, promotional posters, and GameStop exclusive posters (even the one that still has the October 2007 date), and all GTA games. Candles, incense, and mood music as well.
I have sanctioned off the 5 days following to dedicate to the game. I have begun my fasting cycle now, so on release day I will be more able to go hours (at least 12) without eating. I have also started to separate myself from terrestrial radio broadcasts to better ready myself for the comedic value of the GTA IV radio stations.
In addition I have also made my own personal "Do not cross, GTA IV in session" police tape to put around my house on release day. I have made sure that my unpaid phone bill remains unpaid so that I will not be interrupted by menial "life" happenings such as: death, bill collectors, the IRS, eating. If my phone is off, I have less need to call the pizza store to order, and by default have to move away from the game to get the pizza.
I have also started, with great fervor, to establish my ass groove on the carpet, couch, and wooden stool. Needless to say that the ass groove for the stool is the hardest one to accomplish. Nevertheless I will persevere. I have also began looking for black curtains to lessen the amount of sunlight entering the house. The only "life" I will have during the 5 days following the release will be the life of my character in GTA IV.
I have attempted, multiple times, to notify the police that I will have the volume on my sound system at ridiculous levels during those days. I tried to tell them that if they hear gunshots, moaning, curse words, and general wife/whore beating that it will simply be me enjoying my new life. I have been hung up on many times.
Having finished 100%ting vice city stories, ive finished all of them on 100% thus far...
But im in a rather bit of trouble since i dont own either an xbox360 or a ps3 and im trying to gather enough money for a ps3 or deciding to get an xbox...either way i already have the game preordered as a special edition ps3 so really i do need that ps3 but if i cant afford it ill have to wait, but ill have the game...oh gosh i wish i could find a backwards compatibly ps3...
I'm waiting a week after release so I can make an informed decision as to which console I'm buying it for.
probably take the day off work......it's also my bday so I probably would've done that anyways.
Taking the day off work, probably calling in sick to work the day after as well.
Absolutely nothing. I will continue to do what I do up to GTA IV's release.
I have the week booked off work, and im going to buy a gaming beanbag to plonk in front of the telly where I wont move
@WreckTheLaw: I found Saint's Row to be the buggiest game I have ever played. Still haven't finished it after getting annoyed at having to do the same missions over and over to fail every time because of pop ups or other random crap. Cool game but was just poorely made. Like my spelling. Hopefully they iron out any bugs in Saint's Row 2, would be a great side dish to GTAIV
@Thassodar:
I think we share similar views my friend.
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
I recognize the game for its advancement of the medium and innovative gameplay, but I didn't play the previous games, and I don't see myself playing this one, despite all the improvements and refinement being touted about it.
Not a hater, just got a sack full of other games to play and eagerly anticipating the fighting game deluge this year.
I've already told my boss that I'm taking the day off and he's a big GTA IV fan as well so he's cool with it. I had already planned on taking some time off this month so GTA being released only sweetens the deal.
Playing Mario Kart Wii
Playing Vice City Stories
Try and complete some games that need finishing.
thanks to the PS3 version of GTA, we had to wait til April 2008
