Maybe Def Leppard don't know their downloadable content from their full-price retail products. Few weeks back they told a radio show that three of their songs would be appearing in Guitar Hero IV. And hey, they still might, but the timing of that interview and today's announcement that three of their songs would be appearing as DLC for Guitar Hero III has me thinking they're not as up-to-speed on their roman numerals as they are on the whole rock n' roll business. On April 24 (May 8 for Europe), the Def Leppard songs Photograph and Rock of Ages will be made available as DLC, along with new single Nine Lives. This last one's interesting because the song will be debuting in the game. Not on radio, not on TV, not even as a ringtone, but as a playable track in a videogame. Looking at that, you could say all kinds of things about the music business, but I'm just going to say it's pretty neat.

I believe the title of the song is "9 Arms"
Well if they do that for Guitar Hero and having the first peak at the song then i want Axl Rose to put his whole Album on Rock Band. Maybe that's why Harmonix is taking its time, for when his CD comes out, I guess another 2 years for DL albums then :(
Video games didn't kill the music industry. The music industry is a dying dinosaur, clinging to it's outdated ways. To continue my obtuse metaphors, the ship is sinking*, and the people are jumping onto anything that might save them, or is making money.
Hence, video games. Video games are making a profit. Crappy bands and delivery systems aren't. Which do you think the musicians want to associate with?
*It's a dinosaur ship, okay? Or just a pretty lame metaphor. But you get my point.
This is pretty cool to hear, though I won't be indulging myself in it (I don't have to funds to constantly buy tracks and buy games :/).
Though, what would be fabulous is if a whole soundtrack debuted for a game, say a "Halo" or something like that. Movies have done that, so you figure it's only a little while until games do.
@male roof blower:
If that comment is in jest...
You sir just won a gold star!
If only Guitar Hero 3 was..............you know............actually a mediocre game, this announcement would be somewhat exciting...
@chiablo: I don't get why that would be a joke. It's a song about a squid.
@Polywhirl:
Ironically, this involves both a crappy band and a crappy delivery system.
@male roof blower: HAHAHA ahh dry humor is always welcome.
@male roof blower: Maybe it was innocent, but I'm pretty sure you know that the drummer only has one arm.
That's insensitive.
thats cool but ill probably be able to play the drum part with one hand :) ...i couldn't help it
First of all, I'm quite utterly surprised to hear that Def Leppard are still going.
Second of all, I think it's great that video games are now popular enough to be seen as a viable platform to debut new material. (I know Metallica plan to debut the first single off their new album on Rock Band, as well.)
@smuckersisgood: You forgot to tie the joke into the article. Sheesh. Had this been a Rock Band track, it may have worked, but would have required a little bit more wit, such as when Jason Chen said on Gizmodo that he had hoped this was a track for Rock Band because he has lost one of his sticks.
To be slightly more serious than the previous posters, this does represent good news for the video game industry. Like the band or not, they have name recognition. May set a precedent before Metallica gets there new stuff out there.
And personally, I think games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero have huge potential to bring new and old music that gamers may have never heard back into the "mainstream."
The radio playing Rock Band only songs is a good example, and I personally have discovered some incredible music from those two games, Coheed & Cambria as well as Rush being notable examples.
Ugh. Guitar Hero deserves everything they get if they take in Def Leppard. Though the question remains... If they were in Rock Band too, would you have to drum with only one arm?
@2NinjasTapedTogether: I would assume if the drum chart were accurate, it would be totally possible with one arm. That being said, this guy is pretty damn good and most of us would probably have to resort to two-armed drumming like the posers we are.
This may be the first time I get DLC for GH.
def leppard are still around? :?
who cares...they suck balls. Besides that anyone that liked them is probably dead or has alzheimers
um...I work at a radio station and we've had that on-hand as an official release for about a month already. not playing it, what with the "special appearance" by Tim McGraw sucking it up and all...but it's FAR from debuting with GH3
@Polywhirl: Lighten up, Francis.
Hey, what has nine arms and sucks?
Well, its a buck per song on most conventional sites, Most which will rarely see 500K+sale. The Artists/Masters probably gets the same amount of royalty from GH/RB, if not more, but with already 2+million fanbase+quarantined market+locked down source of income=Better survival rate. I mean, didn't GH:Aerosmith say it all?, I would love to see is some hard data on cashflow from that game.
@FTANK: Screw you, they've got a shitload of awesome songs in their catalogue: Animal, Rocket, Hysteria, Let's Get Rocked, Heaven Is... all awesome 80's style glam rock. They're a perfect fit for Guitar Hero.
Didn't the earlier news say that Animal was going to be one of the tracks too? I hope they haven't dropped it, I freaking love that song.
It's pretty fascinating the whole Guitar Hero phenomenon. It's really taken a life of it's own, but it looks like this is just the beginning. What with Aerosmith getting it's own Guitar Hero game and now it's rumored that the Beatles and Guns N Roses and slew of other bands want to get in on the act, with their own GH games. It could change how music is marketed to our youth.
Def Leppard? Really?
If they released the thing for free then maybe it would take off, but who's going to drop £3.50 on a new Def Leppard single, even if it's attached to two 'classics'
And where's 'Animal' or 'Let's Get Rocked' or are they out of the question?
Is that the infamous one-armed drummer on the far right?
@inphanta: I think it's the guy in the light blue shirt.
Man, that's a terrible idea. Having to pay just to hear the song, not even knowing whether you like it or not? God, that's just so dumb.
"Nine Lives" is Def Leppard's new single from their album "Songs from the Sparkle Lounge", and it is a collaboration between them and Tim McGraw.
And... um... It's actually already being played on radios and such, and is pretty kicking. You can go ahead and listen to it on Youtube already.
+ Watch video
Plus, that's Rick Allen on the right, in the gray shirt, very PRE accident.
@PropCulture: Actually, I think you meant to ask, "what has nine arms and rocks?" ;)
Gotta mention, dude on the far left just looks hilarious.
@Polywhirl:
Sad, but true. That being said, if you're a pirate, you really should pay for your music.
I recently bought Guitar Hero 3....and I kinda like Rock Band alot better...
Not trying to start a fight or anything...
But the models in guitar hero, when they sing, their mouth flap...and scare me.....
Whoa, awesome, that one guy's wearing a WYSP shirt. Philadelphia represent,hahah!
that sounds very cool and nifty and all that stuff,
but it doesn't change the music industry (riaa.)
if they cared about the artists they represent or the consumers they sell to,
one would already be able to fill up a media playing device at best buy or fye.
luckily, they've failed miserably at quashing these new formats;
in the process they've loosened their grip over popular music as a whole.
@eclipsegryph: You're right, that's not bad. Joe Elliot's voice sounds a little shot though. I suppose thirty years of performing entitles it to a little creakiness...
@freakout: and now I realise it's not even Joe Elliot's voice. duh.
@Vecha: I remember saying that here in another Guitar Hero related post. Except it freaked out my mother.
