The official Grand Theft Auto IV site just updated with another wealth of information including details on four new multiplayer modes.
The new modes, all described in detail on the jump, include Team Mafiaya Work, Team Car Jack City, Turf War and Race.
Hit the jump for a run down of the ones we already have heard about as well.
Newly Detailed Modes
Team Mafiaya Work: (2 to 8 teams) You're a member of a crew doing contract work for the mafiya—including such plum gigs as escorting wanted men, picking up MacGuffins and stealing cars. Work as a team to complete contracts before the time period ends and get the rewards. You'll probably want to do your best to scupper the other crew's work as well. Each contract you complete gives your team cash, and the crew with the most cash at the end of the round wins.
Team Car Jack City: (2 - 8 teams) Cars spawn parked around the map and the teams must steal then and take them to a drop off point. Teh cash teams get for dropping of stolen vehicles depends on their condition—teams get less cash the more damaged they are. The exception to this are special bonus cars, stuffed with drugs, which five a set amount of cash on delivery no matter how damaged they are. Your crew has to get hold of whatever vehicles the boss wants. Whichever crew makes the most money wins. Simple.
Turf War: (2 teams only) A timed capture-the-base mode. There are a number of bases around the map that you have to take by stand on on them for a short period of time. The more players that are on a base, the faster it can be captures. The more bases that your team owns, the faster your team's cash score increases. If the rival gang is on or near a base, you won't be be able to take control of it—so do what you can to try and... displace them. The team with the most cash at the end of the round wins.
Race: Race to the finish through each checkpoint in order. If you take a wrong turn or mess up in some way, you can respawn your vehicle on the last checkpoint you passed. There is a large selection of races for cars, boats , and helicopters—you can choose laps and vehicle class/type. This mode has two sub-modes: Free Race and Cannonball Run.
Free race are point-to-point races. First one to reach the end point inws.
Cannonball Run are races where you have to reaverse several checkpoints any way you can.
Modes we knew about
GTA Race: Rockstar North's twist on the concept of a race. Host selects vehicle type (each racer selects his or her specific vehicle after that), race, number of laps, and time limit. Despite ordered checkpoints, players can go anywhere in the city at any time. Do you want a straightforward race from start to finish or do you want to create a roadblock and shoot rockets at your fellow racers? The choice is yours - each player does it slightly differently. 16 players max.
Cops N Crooks: 2 teams, 2 vastly different goals. The cops can see the crooks on their radar but the the crooks can only see the escape point making this the ultimate cat and mouse situation. For the first time, players can get a chance to be on the other side of the law in a Grand Theft Auto with Cops n' Crooks. A team of "crooks" need to get their boss to safety, as the team of "cops" pulls out every trick in the book to try and stop this from happening. Again, 16 players max.
Hangman's NOOSE: Co-op in Grand theft Auto IV is a 4 person affair. Each mode is a short, story-based mission you must complete with your friends. In Hangman's NOOSE you must get crime boss to an extraction point alive. First, several of Liberty City's finest need to be dealt with and then transport must be secured. Will you take Kenny to safety in an armored car? How about a motorcycle or attack chopper? The choice is all yours.
Team Deathmatch: Classic deathmatch done Grand Theft Auto style. Go anywhere, do anything: the whole city is yours. 16 players max, teams can be made in any configuration. Weapons on the ground can be configured by the host. Capitalism rules here: the team with the most money in the end is the winner.

Comments
Whatever happened to "Free Mode"? It was talked about in the new OXM.
Good times will be had.
Mafiaya Work sounds kind of boring, but the rest sound really fun. As if I needed another reason to buy GTAIV anyway. The MP modes are just an added bonus.
yep just read this on the official website... can't wait!
It is amazing that I would have been completely content without Multiplayer. But the mere fact that they're adding a crapload of it just makes me respect these guys even more.
The first two mentioned sound great. I really like the sound of Car Jack City.
I've never been one for a mignight release but for this game I am surely going to give it a go. I can't wait to try out Cops N crooks.
My god is this going to be the best game ever?
Wow, I've always found the single player game in GTA to get boring really fast, but some of these multiplayer modes sound pretty fun. Hmm....
Looking at the player names has me wondering: How SDTV friendly will the game be? Seems like that text would be hella hard to read on a standard-def set.
One month from now ... will we ever look back and think: "Damn, I wish I still had a life"?
@Allcars:
Nope!
When it comes out, GTA London will be the best game ever!
Errite guvna!
It's all about Cops 'N Crooks. The premise is unbelievably brilliant for a GTA game. That could be the only multiplayer mode and it would be all that's needed. Everything else is just gravy on top of an enormous, stuffed turkey with a massive side of delicious mashed potatoes.
By the way, is GTA4 the single greatest value since the Orange Box, the latter of which is the greatest value ever? I submit that yes, yes it is.
Im literally drooling right now...I dont think ive ever been excited for a game this much. Sad? Maybe. But I dont care :D
Nice - like the sound of a domination-style match.
There is a God.
Damn you GTA IV, stop making me want to drop $60 on you! My wallet can't take it...
Geez ... these are sounding more and more fun. I wonder how well they'll run over the network? Team Car Jack City sounds pretty fun ... several of the modes sound great. I'll have to play them before I know if it'll be a time-drainer or not, but I like the effort I'm seeing!
Sounds good! Is it the 29th yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is the maximum amount of days that it is acceptable to take off of work after a game release before it's considered "extreme"? :)
Like has been said previously, I would have been happy with just the single player GTA IV. This is just icing... really really really good icing!
So sad I don't own a console. This is really going to be something.
The 29th can't come sooner.
I can't get anymore excited guys, so please don't even try anymore... There is a thing as something being TOO good... :|
I'm sad there's no coop dickin' around mode. I know comparing GTA to Crackdown is getting pretty played, but dang. Just dickin' around in Crackdown was a fine old time. I'd LOVE to see it in more (or all!) sandbox games.
I'm gonna play this till I vaporize and become part of millions GTA4 pixels
The mafiya one isn't new, I saw it in this months Edge magazine.
@will: The first thing that came to mind when you said this was, "How many stars will you get for not paying the congestion charge?"
I'm not even a GTA fan, and I'm buying this game at midnight - it sounds like a ridiculously good game.
I can't wait!
*goes off to build time machine*
Was the grammar and spelling that bad on the Rockstar page intentionally?
@Habits:
I remember having Hilary Goldstein from IGN mention that Rockstar said in an interview that they wouldn't of had made multiplayer if there wasn't a multiplayer free-roam mode, so it's gotta be there somewhere. It's probably just not been announced officially or anything.
@jayntampa: @jayntampa:
GTA Race is another gem. It's hilarious too, when you think about it, because it's pure GTA.
You figure, well, GTA Race you probably just race around a set route in cars. But since it's GTA and not some racing game, the goal is simply to pass the checkpoints and get to the end. Period. And not necessarily in a car, either, but using any methods than you can think of.
Hijack another player's car? Yes. Sneak into the backseat of a player's car and hitch a free ride without them noticing? Sure. Forget about the racing path and go off to the next checkpoint and set up a roadblock, walk away and hide behind something, observe the impending crash while chuckling to yourself, and then shoot an RPG into the mix while running off to the next checkpoint? Yes, you can do these things. I certainly will be.
sweetness. can't wait for GTA IV.
I must say though myself I'm sorta gearing myself to not expect this to be as "OMG OWNAGE!" as most people expected. GTA madness was fun, but the likes of Crackdown allowing you to jump 20 feet and chucking cars about made that madness even better.
The multiplayer is nothing new it was fun back on LCS on the PSP, except this time it has online.
Something just tells me its gonna be great... but it won't be regarded in 10 years time as a classic, and Vice City will still be remembered most.
@Habits:
There is a "co-op dicking around mode". It's called Free Mode, and it does exactly what you'd expect. Just lets you and 15 others go on a rampage all over Liberty City and do whatever you want.
@Habits:
There is. It is called Free Mode. You and your pals can all pile into a big sedan and just roll around town listing to the radio and looking for trouble.
How could anyone think this isn't going to be the best game ever?
Mafiaya! i was like wtf? haha
This is kinda like if a beautiful woman came to your house and asked if you can lotion her up, and then she brought all of her friends along for additional lotioning.
I'm a Cannonballer.
18 days ... 18 days
Spell check ftl. C'mon Crecente, I know those beautiful locks of your can't be obscureing the keyboard/screen THAT much. :P
I don't know how much more hype I can take. I'm already totally stoked to get this game, but each tidbit I read keeps making me want it even more. Is it possible to want a game too much?
@KnightRider: I think the answer would be the number of days until you don't have a job to come go to.
Turf War sounds like Domination aka Battlefield. Awesome.
@Zeliard: That's what I am looking forward to the most. Me and a bunch of friends just wreaking havok all over the city. Did anyone else notice the tag on the main page for GTA4? "Liberty City - At Least We're Not As Racist As The Midwest." I thought that was pretty funny given whats been going on round these parts recently.
Sweet baby jeebus. Will this game dethrone COD4 on Xbox Live?
I gotta say that I'm most excited for the Co-Op missions. I'm hoping for something like the GRAW Co-Op missions, I had a blast playing those, I hope GTA 4's are something like that.
Now, I know I am in the minority here... but are they going to have any local multiplayer? maybe a bit better than what they did with GTA SA. I mean... online is great and all, but i like to socialize with my friends in person.
Is there split screen? or same screen multiplayer?...
@mottom22:
Yea I'm the same way...maybe I'm just not as introverted as the stereotypical gamer?
@Communist_Gamer:
GTA4 seems to improve on Vice City in every way imaginable, so I don't see how that's the case.
GTA4 is easily going to best the others, especially since it's so much more technologically advanced than the earlier ones, and that was one of their biggest issues. And also, of course, because of the multiplayer. GTA4 will hold up for longer, so it'll be remembered longer.
If you listen to the recent IGN Three Red Lights podcast, Hilary Goldstein pretty much acts like GTA4 is the greatest game ever. Literally, he creams himself on tape, go listen to it. And he's played both single and multiplayer.
wow, this game can't come fast enough
@Struct09: I doubt it, because the real draw of COD4 is, specifically, the multiplayer. I don't think there are as many people who will buy this game solely for the MP as there were for COD4.
I cannot wait for this game.. The singleplayer alone is gonna rock and last an age...And now with all these multiplayer modes...DAMN!
You guys have to check out the website update. Hilarious.
