When gamers think "Halo," do they think Microsoft, Xbox 360 or Bungie? That's a question Bungie faces going into the future with its umbilical cord severed from the Microsoft machine—especially when accounting for the millions in branding dollars that tied the Halo franchise so closely to entities other than the developer. Bungie Community Lead Brian Jarrard voiced such concerns to Edge:
Not everyone that buys Halo knows what Bungie is...We want to convert Halo fans into Bungie fans and so we'll take them with us when we do the next game.And while we feel for Bungie's situation, really, they're probably the most recognized developer in the US outside of Nintendo...to a pretty large and loyal fanbase, at least.

What's Halo?
I think Bungie! I absolutely love Bungie.net! Being able to see every little detail of your matches is fantastic.
Just slap a "from the makers of Halo" label on everything they make from now on and they will be fine.
Well, being a life-long Mac user (well, post-Commodore 64 anyway) I'm very familiar with Bungie. I'll happily follow wherever they lead.
While I won't deny Halo to be overhyped, I've had a very positive experience with the franchise and would likely buy another game from Bungie.
Marathon...
i will at least check out what the new game maybe i wont be first in line at midnight waiting at gamestop for it but i will at least give a rental matbe a buy if it seems interesting.
@Derigor: From the Makers of ONI.
Most people, before Halo, never even heard of Bungie.
I will be buying whatever else they come out with.
Sounds like they are trying to go for the 'Rare' approach. Whenever I saw that 'R' emblem on a game, I bought it because regardless of what any reviewer thought of it, I bought it and enjoyed the hell out of it(with the exception of Rare's Xbox outing with that lame ghoul game).
Personally, I think Bungie is talented enough to pull it off. I am not a fan of the Halo series, but the design choices they made in it definitely makes them stand tall. Chances are if they created a new adventure IP or something to that effect, it would be a day one purchase for me.
The only other arguably better-known developer is probably Blizzard for their somewhat popular "World of Warcraft", "Starcraft" and "Diablo" franchises.

I'm old enough that I think of Bungie, I still associate it with Marathon and Myth.
Bungie.
Halo will be an underground game soon enough, but Bungie FTW.
@Rybanis: lol.. When I read the name "Bungie", Marathon is the first game that comes to my mind :P
@Caduceus: And when I read "Blizzard" I think of Lost Vikings..
I'm getting old.. -_-
Like SquareSoft, but I'm not familiar with Bungie yet.
@PhantomVI, ph15h: Exactly, for those of us who've been Apple users since well before 1999 we were always just Bungie fans, I'd even venture to say the vast majority of hardcore "Bungie Fans", you know people who actually know WTF Pathways into Darkness was about, or even more so Minotaur (damn I wish I could find that disc, that and Pax Imperia).
They're gonna need a new, compelling IP to help win them more new fans though, I think the vast majority of people who've played Halo aren't going to be swayed much one way or another at this point; their minds are made up.
Bungie is awesome. Looking forward to the next game,E3 is a possibility of the reveal right?
When I think Halo, I think Luke Smith.
Remember in the Halo 3 beta how the loading screen would say "Love, from Bungie".
That made an impression on me, I love that company.
This is interesting and I honestly wonder how they can actually go about this without having to put "From the makers of Halo!" on every game they make from here on out.
I'm a fan of Halo, but I'd find it very difficult to name 2 other games Bungie has made.
@Derigor:
I don't think Bungie can legally do that since Microsoft owns the rights to Halo, and I doubt MS would want to see that phrase slapped on a PS3 box.
@PhantomVI: @DaiMacculate: @ph15h: Oh God, yes. There have been very few games that have sucked me into the entire game world like Marathon. Flashback, Out of This World, to name a few, but Bungie = Marathon for me. That's the storytelling that I feel was missing from Halo.
@Derigor: When I think of Bungie my first thought is usually Oni... then Halo.
They should be okay, unless they take the Showgirls route to separate themselves from the Bungie from the Halo franchise.
I still assosciate Bungie and Rockstar with Oni. Loved that game.
@ManjiKengo: @ekkobi: Dang, beat me to it.
I think what Bungie should worry about is converting NON halo fans into Bungie fans. All they have to do is make another awesome game/series that people can't put down.
the bottom line is halo has nowhere else to go, so it seems fair for bungie to make sure their fans stick with them, but they have nothing to worry about, people who know halo, know bungie
I'd really love to see ONI 2 from them. Too bad, it's no longer their franchise...
I'm one of those dorks who gets the Marathon references too. I think Bungie is in a fine spot, but I can see where their concerns lie.
I don't think Bungie should be as worried as they are. They have plenty of fan support and will do quite well post-Halo by name alone. Will they post up another 8+ million seller? That's debatable, but for the foreseeable future everything they put out will be highly profitable.
@DaiMacculate: Agreed!
In fact I think they need to start to distance themselves from Halo slightly. I'm not saying ignore the fan base they have built up or piss them off, but the hardcore Halo players were FPS players and prolly never heard of Bungie before Halo.
If they can develop a new IP and make it compelling to the mass audience then I don't think they will have post-microsoft problems.
I'd say I'm in the opposite position of what they're worried about. I have very mixed feelings about the Halo franchise yet I have mounds of respect for Bungie as a development team.
Of course had they not sold-out to Microsoft before the first halo was completed, they wouldn't have had this problem. I'm still bitter about that.
...Sounds like genocide to me... The want to "convert" Halo fans...
But yeah, I'm a FAN of Bungie, but in my opinion, the Halo series wasn't really that great.
make an Oni sequel and they'll be remembered again
I'll buy whatever they come up with next. Bungie.net is an amazing achievement.
@CockroachMan:
For me, I think Myth when I hear bungie and blackthorne when I hear blizzard. Man both companies used to be so cool.
@DaiMacculate: I'd even venture to say the vast majority of hardcore "Bungie Fans",
I was going somewhere with that but I had infant-related computer interference ;)
I was going to say I'd venture most of those people either find Halo to be just OK or like me play it mostly because we still feel like we should give Bungie money for past greatness and have a bunch of RL friends who play ;)
@PissedPS3Fan: I still miss the days when beleaguered Mac users could claim that shining beacon of gaming as their own. Alas...
I'm an old school Mac guy so I always associated Bungie with Apple Computers. Marathon was like the only dope game on the Mac and it was so well made for its time. By now, I'm sure they're pretty much a completely different company since Teh Haloz, but I still have that old happynerd feeling when I see that Bungie logo that takes me back to death matches in the "Mac Lab" at science camp.
@StopTheOncoming: Wow. You blew my mind. That was one original and insightful comment you posted. Thank you. On topic, I like Bungie, they treat us Halo fans right, from the community they've built on their site (7th column), to filesharing, to Bungie fanfests, and free maps (if you are patient). However, I haven't been a fan of any of their other games. They don't appeal to me. For instance, if Bungie's next project was a turn-based RPG, I most definitely wouldn't buy it. Would this lessen my admiration for Bungie? Hardly.
If you guys would have actually *Finished* the Fight like you promised, then perhaps we could all move on to other things together. Instead, your storyline (can we still call it that?) left me confused and disheartened with that itchy feeling that always screams, "Come back and bring some more money!" Kind of like LOST.
TO THE GRAVE! Bungie net has changed the way I play FPS.
I think Bungie has nothing to worry about. They are great because they are so involved with their fan base, it's ridiculous. Bungie had me at hello. ;)
@trelantana,alb1221: What's crazy is that we all love bungie, and don't think Halo is their best game or series...yet for most developers just one game as polished as Halo would be their crowning accomplishment.
I am surprised to see all the Oni love...its not that I hated that game, but its such a pale shell of what it could have and would have been had the MS deal never occurred. Knowing bungie that means it might have taken until the last 2 years to release, but OMFG what an amazing title that would have been. I like Halo but I'd trade every thrill I've gotten from that series for a worthy Oni game.
I try not to hold grudges for too long, bad for the heart, but I'm still bitter about that deal...heck I'm still bitter about Square doing FF7 on the PSX, not because it was such a bad game (or worse than it would have been on the n64, even the most hardcore Nintendo fan knows they made the right call going to CDs for those games) but because of the directions it has taken (if not forced) not just the FF franchise but all subsequent J-RPGs games to follow. FMV cutscenes being the very least of those issues for me ;)
Anyway yeah, I hope their next game is awesome, not an FPS (unless its got Durandal in it, then I'm good), and does expand their fanbase, because in general they do deserve it.
Oh yeah Bungie.. weren't those the guys that were going to originally release Halo on the PC and Mac and then pulled a switch-a-roo resulting in us PC gaming saps getting a shitty port 2 years after it was released on the Xbox?
Yeah, I love those guys
;)

@Dauragon C. Mikado: And when I think Luke Smith I think of this guy who lived in my dorm named Luke Smith...
@RogerWilco:
word.
I've been a Bungie fan since Myth. Man was that a great game, same with the sequel. I also love the Halo series. Oni was OK and I never played much Marathon as I was staunchly anti-mac back then. Looking forward to hearing about what their new projects are.
I'm a Bungie fan, and every time I think Halo, I think of them. But seriously, if they release another great game and the PC demographic gets short-changed AGAIN (I'm looking at YOU, Halo 2!!), then they're going to lose my support mighty quickly. I'm hoping that the whole Halo 2/3 thing was Microsoft's fault.
Isn't it quite simple? "[Game name] from BUNGIE, the creators of HALO" Just like "TOM CLANCYS splinter cell"
Bungie will always have my love.
I have been a Bungie fan for a very long time. I can't wait to see what is next.
