No Bringing Down Of The Sky For PC Mass Effect

The PC version of Mass Effect gets shinier graphics, better load times, less pop-up and a fancy new HUD. It's got the 360 one beat, hands down. Oh, except for "Bring Down The Sky". That won't be shipping with the PC version. Before you stab madly at the "publish comment" button, though, bear in mind that BioWare's Matt Atwood says in the interview with IGN that an announcement regarding additional PC content - ie something like Bring Down The Sky, but free - will be made "soon".

  • Bethesda, please take notes. This is how you port to the PC.

I didn't buy Bring Down The Sky - had already completed the game by the time it came out. Am I the only one who loses interest in replaying story-heavy games like Mass Effect? Even though you can alter the way it flows it still follows the same basic outline and loses a lot of the excitement.

  • Never played the game but can't wait. Quick question, what is this "Bring down the sky."?

  • @Balance_In_Life (PSN): Yeah, what is it? I wanna get the PC version.

  • "Brining Down The Sky" is the first DLC expansion for Mass Effect.

Its quite short and not even that great for a DLC; you guys aren't missing out.

  • PC is the shit. Too bad pirates are KILLING EVERYTHING!!! >.<

  • @Fyren: Cool thanks.

  • @rich8606:
Bringing Down The Sky is a piece of downloadable content for the game. It adds a new planet (it's not what it sounds like) and sub-plot. It's nothing terribly substantial. I bought it and played through it and it was fun, but it should hardly be considered a deciding factor, particularly when the PC is apparently getting free DLC.

  • @Zeliard: What, you need to pay for the 360 DLC?

  • @rich8606:
Hence why the PC version isn't getting it.
I just can't see PC gamers paying for DLC.

  • In my country, original R6 VEGAS PC version is 10$ and PS3 version is 150$ :D

XBOX doesnt even sell here as a choice of Microsoft :(

So PC will always rock! Fuck pirates! No one will pirate if the prices are as low as 10-20$!

Mass Effect PC is going to be awesome by the way, even without any DLC.

  • @rich8606:
Yeah, heh. You have to pay for nearly every piece of DLC on XBL.

I'm glad Bioware is releasing Mass Effect DLC on the PC for free, though I'm sure it's mostly because they realize that nobody would buy it if it wasn't. PC gamers are not accustomed to paying money for DLC, particularly when we get so many free mods from the community.

  • PC's are more powerfull that consoles. Is natural that will get better resolution/textures/sounds. Also hable for a more complex interface, so could provide a elegant solution for something that is ankward with a pad.

  • I guess I'll buy it for the PC...

  • @K-Squad! (Badass Edition):
Arrrr! Don't be dragging us into this.

  • One of the things I loved about Mass effect on the 360 was the HUD, I found it clean and easy to navigate.

  • @Zeliard: Yes, because nobody would buy any Neverwinter Nights DLC, right?

  • Wait, are the guys in the screenshot from the story real? They look pretty bad. Like, regular human body with OH MY GOD INSECT HEAD~~~!

  • Another reason I don't miss my dead 360 - all of it's best games/exclusives end up on the (my) PC which is substantially faster and the games cost half as much.

At least with my PS3 there's not much chance of it's 'exclusives' ending up on the PC.

PCs do indeed rock, but consoles rock too any keen gamer knows it's best to have both a top PC and a console. As for mac? Fuck 'em.

  • @uzivatel:
Those were much closer to expansion packs than DLC. Bringing Down The Sky is nothing compared to them. I don't consider those DLC.

Bioware wouldn't have very much success if they sold "Bringing Down The Sky" to the PC crowd.

  • @Zeliard: Premium modules were more expensive as well ... maybe consoles are better to sell small pieces of DLC than PCs as the interface makes it almost too easy to spend your virtual money.

  • Argh... I can't decide now, Pc or 360? I have the PC to handle it ... but then the achievement whore in me wants more points.

  • Makes sense... They couldn't charge for something on the xbox and keep it free on the PC. Xbox owners would go berzerk. That or they would realise that microtransactions suck...

  • @uzivatel:
Yeah, it's actually pretty frightening. Microsoft's usage of "points" instead of dollars, combined with how incredibly easy it is to buy more points, is deadly. At least it is to idiots like me who spend more money than they should in general.

But I think the biggest reason DLC is generally sold on consoles and not PC is that PC gamers are long used to things like free mods (some of which can be quite significant) and large, free patches for their games (like that really sweet one coming up for The Witcher that fixes and adds numerous things), so we wouldn't necessarily pay for something like "Bringing Down The Sky" if it was released on PC since it's essentially the equivalent of a mod in terms of size and scale.

PC gamers are just accustomed to it, and trying to change it would be hell. Just look at Microsoft trying to introduce Games for Windows Live, their XBL knock-off for the PC. That failed pretty much as badly as something can fail. With XBL, you have to pay $50/year for P2P. PC gamers know that's ridiculous and would never do that to play PC games online (with the exception of MMO's). So maybe part of it is preying on the relative ignorance of the general console crowd. Of course, Microsoft of all companies would never do such a thing.....

  • Uh... what were the Specs and System requirements? I think I'm going to be sad if it's another Assassin's creed blowout.

  • @ph15h:
They haven't released the specs yet, but one of the Bioware guys recently had this to say in an IGN interview:

IGN: Can you talk about system specifications yet?

Matt Atwood: We're just waiting on one last approval, we'll have them shortly. What we've been saying is that it'll work well on a machine that's two years old or newer, so it's a very broad market. The goal is to appeal to a broad market. We will be giving out specs soon, though.

  • Great game, glad the 360 haters will get a chance to experience this master piece. I would haveliked to check out bringing down the sky, but I just don't have time.

Curse you Lost Odyssey and your hidden treasure.

  • What I'm looking for is making addons for Mass effect. Think how easy it would be to create a new planet (or modify an existing one you cannot already land on), create the land by algorithm, then add thinks like buildings, rock formations etc etc.

All the places in Mass Effect are distinctly cookie-cutter anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem.

  • Got the game for the 360. I've been playing it a lot since I got my 360 3 weeks ago.

That said...I'll probably be getting the PC version for the enhanced UI and such. If I like it I'll probably sell my 360 version back to gamestop.

I got Bringing Down the Sky...and it's okay...nothing spectacular. I won't miss it on the PC. If it were something on the order of Noveria or Feros...that might be different, but it's not. It's not much bigger than a few random side missions put together on one world.

Seriously PC people (I'm normally a PC Gamer)...you're not missing much...don't get bent out of shape over it.

Why did I get it on the 360 if I knew it was coming out on the PC? Well...I wanted to play the game...and I don't know how well it'll run on my PC, which is a little dated.

  • @Zeliard: Halo 3's maps are free now, lots of content is free..

  • @Zeliard: DLC is used because it's easier for consoles, the distribution is easier and installation of add-on packs a la PC is harder when some of the audience doesn't have the ability to install anything.

PC games have had multiple add-on packs per game in some cases, so to say similar things don't exist for PC is barmy.

I'm not sure why Kotaku is mentioning how the PC version has the 360 one beat, when this game isn't out yet and the 360 has had this title for what, half a year? The visuals are already great and I didn't have to wait all that time.

  • Couldn't see the point of buying the DLC after I finished the game. Then again I don't see the point of replaying the whole game just for a few technical tweaks. Just give me Mass Effect 2 already!

  • @Zeliard: Live is not supported here and we dont use dollars anyway, which means I am pretty happy with points.

I dont think, its just about console crowd x PC gamers, since some of them are in fact the same people...

  • No no no... don't do this Bioware. Give the PC gamers Bringing Down the Sky, and give 360 gamers whatever you have in store for PC. Don't be jerks.

  • I'm quite happy with the 360 version and considering my PC probably couldn't even run the PC version, i'd hardly say the PC version has it beat =p. Not to mention the hud on 360 is designed for console ease. Its like comparing apples to oranges.

I've not personally bought the Brining down the Sky DLC. Though, if PC owners get the same content free, they better make it free on Xbox as well, i consider it a major slap in the face to all their fan base who have supported Mass Effect on 360 and have also bought the DLC, to then just give PC gamers it free. My opinion of Bioware will go down a lot, otherwise.

  • My PC sucks too so I'm glad I already played it on the 360. Honestly, this game frakking rocks and was one of my favorite games to come out of last year.

  • @Spew: The moment I read "It's got the 360 one beat, hands down" I knew it was Luke "PC-only Syndicate sequel" Plunkett. Then again it should not be a surprise that Mass Effect PC will receive some additional polish - it's coming out half a year after the X360 version.

  • Bringing down the Sky was a waste of five dollars.

I could have bought half a martini for that.

  • @freakout: Actually, I quite enjoy games like this. My friend and I were talking about it, him getting all pissed off 'cause I killed a guy in the story because I thought he was a danger to everyone. Turns out, we can converse on what we did differently within these big ol' games with many outcomes to the same story.

Oh yeah, Free sorta Bringing Down the Sky! w00t!

  • do Not DOWNLOAD IT, IT SUCK

  • that's what they did with KotOR PC port too. Not a surprise they do it here too.

  • @Demaar:

Hahah Im hoping my laughter is justifiied because Im hoping that was sarcasm XD

Agh this is the same reason why I havent bougth the COD4 map pack. As a PC gamer I ask myself:

    WHO PAYS FOR MAPS?
