Americans More Offended by Sex, Gay Kissing Than Severed Heads

Offensive_poll.jpg A recent poll on parenting game guide What They Play, asks this:

As a parent, which would you find most offensive in a video game?

The most offensive? A man and woman having sex. Second most? Two men kissing. Third was a graphically severed human head. Always found it odd that violence is okay, but sex is a no-no — especially in the US. Guess that's what happens when your country's founded by Puritans!

  • Two gay graphically severed heads having sex and cussing. 100%

  • Wow...

    Just, wow...

  • Image of Eltigro Eltigro at 04:16 AM on 04/11/08 *

Stuff like this always makes me wonder how our population keeps increasing...

  • Does that worry anyone? The general opinion of Americans is that images of Gay men are on par with cutting someones head off...

  • I've been saying this. We'd rather have people dead than have teenage pregnancies and population increases... =/ Guess nobody noticed until a survey was actually put out. We take offense to Sex yet didn't notice the violence on the same level(GTA: SA).

  • A man and woman having sex...NO

    -Dad can i get gta4??
    -Sure son,here 60bucks...
And finish condemned before u play it...

  • Dear God! A cylinder's landed on the house.

  • It is weird but violence has always been more 'tolerable' than sex in society - I don't know why, maybe it has something to do with religion.

  • But where does two hot girls making out rank?

  • @ReignFury:

And with society, you mean America.
This poll would look extremely different in Europe, especially Germany where I come from.

  • I'm almost surprised that "two guys kissing" wasn't ranked above "a man and woman having sex."

  • Seriously, two hot girls making out is a-okay according to the parents taking this poll.

  • I actually would've suspected the gay option to be considered more offensive than the straight sex option.

I think it's underlying that excessive violence is something parents disconnect from, while sexual arousement is a very real and close threat and no matter how much of an angel your kid is, one day it'll be wanting to have sex, outside of marriage and disgrace the whole family in front of god. Just an idea i find interesting of course, I never really understood the logic of it.

  • @maxax:

    agreed.

Many places in Europe have pioneered sex education in schools, revealing an embarrassing lack of understanding in other regions [UK and US mostly.]

  • @maxax:

Very true. Though people are still scared of sex over this side of the pond, just not as much as America it seems :P

I find it silly that people try really hard to hide sex from their kids, but dont mind them decapitating someone in a game.

  • @Eltigro: because many parents don't "sheild" there kids from sexual content, and don't educate them properly, imo.

  • Only in America.

  • @maxax: I guess, but I was thinking more of the UK (where I'm from) as I can't see this poll producing much different results over here.

  • @Ahsayuni: whoops, ment DO sheild.

  • This headline isn't correct, by the way (though it's probably true). The site's not just for Americans, and the voters weren't ranking the options in order of offensiveness. They only got to pick one.

  • As a Franco-American I'm saddened that i'm part of two cultures that are polar opposites.

  • God I hate old people & idiots.

I'm all over some getting their "Fucking head cut off" but you better not think about making sex with a woman or kissing another man.

America is so damn ass backwards. I'm moving to Canada.

  • @GOD: terrifying.

When I see polls like this, I'd like to think that they're based out of asscrack-nowhere in the midwest but sadly I know better...

  • It's not as ridiculous as people always make it out to be. Is a kid more likely to cut their friend's head off with a katana or go get their girlfriend pregnant before either one is in high school? Parents are more sensitive to things they think could actually influence their child in some way, and their child probably isn't going to blow someone to bits with a rocket launcher.

  • This is a good website, by the way. Despite the silliness of the poll results, I hope parents know about it.

It's also what happens when the country is run by right wing Christian hypocrites. Find me a conservative Bible-thumping xenophobic gay-basher that hasn't had at least one heterosexual or homosexual "encounter" out of wedlock and I'll sell you the Golden Gate Bridge.

Anyway, this isn't exactly a huge revelation. The New Testament teaches that sexual "indecency" is wrong but it's just fucking fine to stone people to death. This is the result of such backwards idiocy.

    Most people are fucking idiots.

  • @ZenGaijin: "America is so damn ass backwards. I'm moving to Canada."

[stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com] #75: Threatening to Move to Canada

    I lol'd.

  • @Giolon:

    Only thing is, I'm Black!

    C C C C COMBO BREAKER!!!

  • To: the rest of the world: From: An American who is unfortunately not surprised by this result. Please do not think we're all as stupid as that poll sugggests. Thanks you. @Zeliard: My thoughts exactly...

  • Seeing men kiss doesn't bother me in the least bit, but hearing kids toss words like "fuck" and "cunt" thrice in every second really annoys me. The only series I know of that does this is GTA, but the atmosphere is usually intended to be silly so it doesn't bother me.

Also, I don't know of any game that has men kissing to serve any purpose beyond humor.

  • First up - this stuff is always funny yet scary

@Mienvard: interesting. Good point. Parents seeing the cut heads as OTT and unreal, but the threat of their kid growing up and having sex is a more real one.

also, in terms of knee-jerk game ignorance - the thought that little timmy might "turn gay" over a video game is another entertaining spectacle. The violence *may* desensitise him to cutting heads off and the gay kiss *may* show him the possibility that you can kiss a guy - but as a knee-jerk reacting middle class parent, which of these two would you rather your kid experminted with? He's not going to "turn gay" if he wasn't already, but he may like the sensation of cutting off heads!

  • @brianewing:
If some male teen wants to have sex, or kiss a guy, then he's gonna have sex. Or kiss a guy. Or both.

And he's not going to do it because he saw it in the movies and thinks it might be cool.

The reason guys kissing and hetereosexual sex is ranked above graphic decapitation is due to a mix of prudishness and bigotry.

  • @brianewing: A lot of that has to do with the reluctance to teach children ANYTHING about the consequences of sex until long after they started having it. (Sex ed at my school was 10th grade. A classmate of mine had miscarried twice by then.)

  • Have the Americans seen Torchwood yet? they'll have a field day with that.

  • @Giolon: As did I

  • For their next poll: Do women prefer pissing standing up or sitting down?

I mean our country was founded by prudes what do you expect.

  • More men kissing in games please, thanks.

  • Well in Europe it's the other way around. Show as much sex as you like but just spill one drop of blood and you are screwed.

  • That doesn't surprise me. This whole country is sexually a repressed people who can't deal with the thought of sex. I would have more of a problem with my kid seeing violence than sex in a movie. At least sex is natural and the kid shouldn't be ashamed of something natural.

  • I suppose I'm lucky I live in the UK where they aren't as crazy :P

  • How utterly strange. I guess this explains why I was robbed of my wild sex orgies in Mass Effect.

  • gg religion. gg.

  • It's kind of disturbing that violence is more accepted than sex and homosexuality.

  • Image of Atheist Jew Atheist Jew at 05:07 AM on 04/11/08 *

This reminds me very much of the opening sequence of the Mike Judge flick Idiocracy.

  • @ZenGaijin: :( I miss Killer Instinct. More SEX, Less Violence (Just a lil bit less...)

  • How would having sex with a severed head rank?

  • Haha! A head severed from the neck with the death and the stiff eyes and the lifeless separated body and the pool of blood usually accompanying such a separation is better than two men putting their faces against each other? Really?

    No, really?

@brianewing: Yes, I can see how you'd be more worried about a pregnant teenager, when you live in a country where 7 year olds stab their siblings to death when they lose at Halo?

Pregnant teenagers aren't caused by the media these kids consume, it's because they're too stupid to use condoms. Teenagers have sex because they're programmed to start looking for it once they go live...down there. That can never be stopped. Yes, you can make them afraid of sex by demonizing it but that basic human programming will remain no matter what. Parents should educate them and placate them with tales of true love and shit and promises of white weddings and 50 year anniversaries. That's may work in the interim.

  • @exolstice:
That would be ranked as less offensive than two males having sex.

  • Well duh. What do you expect from a country where lying about Monica Lewinsky is considered worse than lying about weapons of mass destruction.

  • @Sollus: Are you saying violence isn't natural? Because humanity has been violent since the beginning of time. Animals also naturally exhibit violence. Violence is natural, so is sex and so is homosexuality. I'm not bothered about the study because it considers violence more acceptable than sex/gays but because it shows Americans are out of touch with reality. All three are natural, if you look at history and biology.

  • Poor old F-Bomb... look at it, such a low score... F***!

  • @Garo: Must not have many highschool massacres, then? Oh well.

  • What is so suprising?

The difference between an A rated game and an M rated game is sex not violence. The point that sex in media has more of an effect on the society than violence is worth considering.

Seeing sex in a movie was way more interesting than explicit violence. Sex is much more of a motivating factor.

And as stupid as many Americans might be, in terms of censorship and tolerance overall, it's pretty open.

At least Puritans don't censor their porn Bashcraft...which has had an entirely different effect on Japan

  • @cakester: I do believe I'll have to vote for this one as well. 100%

  • If it were possible, I would head-to-desk so hard that my desk would splinter into a thousand pieces.

I can't even begin to imagine how stupidly inane it is to think that sex somehow is more offensive than violence!

God, if we were this stuffed-shirt about sex back when our population was very low, (say, after the bubonic plague?) humanity might as well have just called it quits and abstained until we became a paintsmear on Earth's road of history.

    Un-fucking-believable...

  • Yeah we americans think that if you're going to have sex...get a room. Do it in the privacy of your home instead of letting your flabby ass hangs out in public. That is disgusting. Now if it were too hot chicks making out...well that's a whole different story. Sex...private.

Severed head, hell you must have done something wrong and deserved to be severed...so that's not offensive. There you have it.

  • They should have switched the question to which they found the most offensive in REAL LIFE. I guess the context would be different. I mean, I see men kissing each other on the street, and I can't see how a normal parent could find that more offensive than a real live decapitation. In a video game though, decapitation is the norm.

  • @Soldrak: Violence isn't indicative of the animal kingdom. Animals don't inflict violence on one another for the same reason humans do. When a lion eats a horse it's only causing violence because it's stronger and needs to survive, not because it found out the horse was having sex with its wife. When you cut someone's head off or blow up an orphanage you're doing it because you choose to do it. Violence as a means of survival is natural, any other form is "unnatural".

  • This is what I want in a game.

A man and a woman having sex, then another man comes in and cuts off the womans head. Then the two guys start kissing for no reason. Then they pull away and start using the F-Word as many times as they can.

    That's what I call a game.
