It's not on the scale of the dreaded (do you dare speak its name?) RROD, but lately, some attention's been focused on PS3 owners getting an error message which reads "An error occurred during the start operation. 80010514". Not as catchy as "Red Ring Of Death" then, either. Do you know what it means? I don't. The crew at GameRevolver reckon it's one of two things: a problem with your HDD, or the result of a faulty software installation. We'd now normally use this part to tell you what Sony think it is, but they haven't the foggiest, an SCEE rep telling Eurogamer "they aren't aware of this issue with the PS3". Man, those SCEE repair guys are laaaiiiddd back. That or, you know. There is no 80010514 [cue X-Files theme....]

Maybe it's a Guru Meditation code :)
never seen this before...wow i feel almost as bad as the guy who has the 360 thats never gotten a RROD and finds out it happens and is like what?
The bad thing about this is that it's jumping from blog to blog and site to site and you see very little in the way of complaints about this code,if any except for a website posting about it.But,I'm sure it will be drummed up.
i don't think SCEE is getting any of the memos
Well, someone has to know!
How do they not know something they labeled as 80010514?
@BigChiefSmokem:
They're busy putting the new cover sheets on all the TPS reports.
Is Boolosif any catchier???
This story originated from a TEAM XBOX article. They started a story about PS3's suffering massive failures and that SONY is trying to cover up. Gamerevolver is simply posting up a copy of the supposed news, and now Kotaku....
Team Xbox creates a story with no evidence and the blogs follow suit....
Sounds like an ASP error code. A long string of numbers, with absolutely no helpful information... good times.
This is news to me. I haven't the slightest clue what it could mean.
Wellll, as long as they say it's not an issue!
Can't you still reformat the HDD though? I mean yeah it would suck to lose everything but it's still better then having to send you system in. Not only that, I KNOW I'm outside of my warranty. I hope this doesn't become a larger problem.
1 - 800 - DEAD - PS3
@dragonfang18: firmware install error code? Did someone shut their PS3 down while trying to install a firmware update..come on fess up.
80010514 = boolosla in 1337 5p34kz
New lottery ticket numbers! Ever since i used 4 18 15 16 23 42 I've been having some bad luck.....
@Kyle81: That sounds more probable than anything.Yes,you have defects in any hardware,but not a high percentage in the PS3s. Now someone try to find a post in a forum about this code who has had it show up.
is it like the network error code that pops up on the psp every now and then? or does most of sony error code begins with 8? that's what it looks like to me
@Clarke: "we're sorry, you have dialed a number that cannot be reached from your calling area"
=(
Can't wait to see this turn into a flaming post with hundreds of comments.
This is a disc read error that very few people are experiencing. There seems to be links between people getting this and updating firmware so it may not be completely harware base
From my own observations, I see that many of the people who reported this did so because they tried playing COD4. Maybe just a coincidence
80010514
booLOSIR
@LittleBigPlaneteer:
hardware based*
something smells fishy :P if it's an error code, then clearly they know what it should be~ error codes dont just pop up at random :P least not as a constant random (80010514)
Sounds like some people are trying to make this and "issue" when it's not.
"Those in Glass Houses shouldn't cast stones" is the term your going to want to remember in these comments.
What a trash article. Keep my connection high/clean the dust off the PS3...what?
? Never heard of it till now.
Must be some error they thought was rare, and doubted would ever happen, so the information on it wasn't widely distributed.
Or its a trap.
Hmmm, I wonder what could cause it...
I'm lucky, launch 360 no RROD, but I did have a faulty launch PS3. It had a bad AV output. Second PS3 is going strong, but doesn't get that much use. My situation is very backwards compared to most. I hope this error code isn't contagious.

I know 7 people with PS3s, not a single one has mentioned a problem. Although I do not know anyone who has a 20/40/80Gig PS3. I'd like to know if this is an issue with new models.
Does this code mean the entire system is useless like rrod? Does it fix by restart? I was thinking about buying this system but not until i learn more about this..
@ese_incoherent: It would be "backwards compared to most" if you were on your 3rd or 4th PS3 and your 1st 360. Right now I think you're pretty golden.
@iRloading:
Well that's what you get when you generalize a whole company to a PR who likely doesn't have an engineering degree. Sony's technicians surely know what this is, and they work for Sony.
But I digress, it makes for a good title eh? :)
This actually happened to me a few times hasnt happened again for a while though guess I'll go disconnect my PS3 from the Ethernet Cable now :(
@RonMaverick: It's starting to sound like a myth.You'll be safe in purchasing one as it's nooo where near anything like the RROD situation.
@Koztah: Apparently, they didn't get the memo on this error.
Hmmm my friend had one odd error in which he called Sony for support but there was no solution, but to return the PS3 for a new one. Something happened with the OS system locking up on him after he decided to reformat the HDD. Probably this is one of those OS problems??
This is not a common problem at all... this is be blowing out of proportion...
I've never heard of this error til now..
Someone't trying to give Sony bad press and its sad Kotaku posted this story..
Interesting, how wide spread are the reports?
On a side note: my 360 RROD's a few days ago and I just sent it off on its way today.
(*~*)
@yashichi8bit:
Not widespread at all. Earlier when i googled it there were like 11,000 hits but many of those are news sites/blogs who are jumping on the bandwagaon as if this is Sony's RROD. Now the hit number is 12,200 sites and it will keep baloooning.
If you visit the top hits and see the threads only like 4 or 5 people in those threads have had this error, so it's not widespread at all. Again from my observation, almost all of them were playing COD4 at the time. A strange coincidence I say
From what I hear from forums, it's not related to the hard drive since the thing that stops working is the BLURAY DRIVE.
If Sony doesn't know what the error codes mean who put them in there? Did someone misplace the service manual??
something smells fishy..
@Kyoseki: I think I'm the only one that caught the Faxanadu reference.
@dragonfang18:
How do they not know something they labeled as 80010514?
Give them a break. If they have a number like 80010514, that just means they have at least 80010513 other codes too. That's a lot of page flipping through your handy error book.
Never heard of this issue before. From the article:
"Although this error occurs less frequently than a southern Alabama church revival..."
Also from the article:
"By following these simple steps, you can prolongue the life of your PS3 indefinitely. To sum things up, the error is not hardware releated. Unfortunately, it is occuring through the corruption of firmware. Restoring you PS3 will not roll back the firmware, and unfortunately will not fix the issue 9 times out of 10. If you are receiving this error, contact Sony for a replacement unit. They are very fast when it comes to servicing/replacing as we had our 60Gb (the one that is in shortage ya know) back in about 2 1/2 weeks. Not bad."
This is not an issue. Move along people.
I think I've gotten this before. It was an error while trying to connect to the network and a power cycle cleared it. I said I think because it could have been any error that started with an 8. But I think this is definitely being blown out of proportion
Its code for... STEALING YOUR INTERNETS!!!!!
This sounds completely ridiculous. Looking at the dates of posting this, Team X-Box seems to be the first ones to report on this. Almost everyone else linked to them, or they were linking to someone who they themselves are linking to Team X-Box.
It looks like it's a hoax. Sony's gaining momentum, and people are not just making jokes about how it's a failure anymore. People actually want one, and are excited about the games. And I think this is someone's idiotic attempt to make an isolated incident into something of an analog for Microsoft's epic failure rates.
They (being Team X-Box) are likely trying to put the breaks on Sony's new found buzz.
@PapaBear434:
Man you might be right, one of the first places I remember reading about this was on Team Xbox. As ironic as it is for them to be covering Sony PS3 errors. I'm not saying I doubt the existence of the error code, but it's been blown up so huge when there's just a handful of cases.
