Mario Kart Wii comes with one pack-in Wii Wheel. But what if you'd like to get some 2 player Wii Wheeling on, that means an extra purchase. For those who don't want to shell out US $9.99 for another Wii Wheel, a Japanese blogger has an economical solution. That, after the jump.
Unfortunately, it's not perfect as the B button's a little hard to reach.

LAWLS! PERFECT!
GYAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Why would anyone want to use the wheel in the first place? I've heard bad things about it, and people getting better of using the wiimote alone.
Erm....Lol?
That's greatness.
After reading the article, I was expecting duct tape. This is better.
Surprisingly, this was a prototype Nintendo came up with.
@OtakuFille:
I dont know. It sucks because I like the idea of the wii wheel. You buy a regular controller and then a cheap add on that gives you the experience of a steering wheel, gun, etc...too bad they couldnt pull it off.
The Wii wheel isn't actually THAT bad in my opinion. I tried it out at the Mario Kart Grand Wii tournament. I don't know what everyone complains about XD
That is exactly why the Wii Wheel is a piece of shit, I'll be using wavebirds thank you!
I sense a contest. Make a mario kart wii steering wheel using every day items found around the house.
dibs on a clock
Waste of tape and 5 seconds.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Thats some funny shit their
@NightMystic: Then you could make sure you have your hands at "ten and two."
I was expecting the steering wheel from a 80s Cadillac Seville..
@Eltigro: See it teaches kids how to drive properly. For does that thought gaming was a waste of time HA! Videogames teach us things.....like how to make makeshift driving wheels for mario kart which in fact will teach us how to drive properly.
@OtakuFille: the wii wheel is actually quite good. I am very impressed after playing a couple hours with it tonight.
You guys have absaloutley no idea how glad i am that there isn't any of this shit for my Sixaxis...
"Out of the sea of need rises the light of innovation" or "shit floats"
Aren't there more buttons on the Wii Wheel? So it's more like just playing with the wiimote sideways with a somewhat kinda sorta wheel that's actually just a cylindrical metal...thing.
What is that thing?
@OtakuFille: Where have you heard these things? I've heard nothing but excellent things... from like, everyone and their mother. Seems like the other controller options have been "gimped."
@Eltigro:
Nintendo needs wii wheel driving instructors to yell at you while you try to learn how to use it.
@JGab: It's a cover for a cooking pot, also packing tape. :D
At first it seemed really gimmicky to me...
But I'm with damatman and TT, I used it at the Grand Wii event and was pretty comfy, especially the B button - it seems to be angled pretty well...
I might get a second one tomorrow but don't know how much £s to expect...
Speaking of the Grand Wii event - I was 1st place in Edinburgh at around 14:30 but didn't win - gutted! :(
@LionheartAce: Aw man...I was hoping it'd be something wackier. Like a...flag pole holder...that's fairly small...for fairly small flags...
Lack of resources sparks creativity.
That is definitely from a pot specifically designed for cooking noodles.
Awesome.
That's the proof that some games are much better with pot...
Honestly this one looks higher quality than the Nintendo one...
Yay! Now you can eat your pie, and use the dish too!
can't reach the B button, eh? cut the tape in half!
bah, nevermind, was thinking of the 1 & 2 buttons...
LOL
Also, you'd think nobody's ever played Excitetruck.
Use a margarine pot's lid instead. Pierce four holes in it, and tie the wiimote with a rope. Done well this should free up the buttons that are hidden by the tape.
@Billkwando:
No kidding! If it has the same learning curve as Excite Truck, it'll take a bit of time to "get" the motion controls down pat, but once you do, it's very, very intuitive. I thought Excite Truck was a freaking blast, and I don't know anyone who bothered using the Ubisoft wheel or anything; there's simply no need. Unbelievably fast and visceral, especially in Super Excite mode.
As for the wheel, while I do wonder why so many prototypes had to be created by the Big N, I also wonder what people expect from a plastic wheel that does exactly what you'd need it to do.
Excite Truck was awesome. Pure and simple.
Been playing it this morning an the wheel just adds to the game! the pan lid however...
I have been playing Mario Kart Wii all day (mostly. Stopped for lunch....) and the wheel really does work. I think its the extra weight in the middle section, which help you work out where the "pivot" is.
"shell out 9$" my god americans are insanely cheap
Can confirm that the wheel feels great. Much better than I had dared to hope. Yay!
(We only had one wheel, and pretty much fought over who would be using it.)
DO A BARREL ROLL....
Wait... pot lid...
never mind.
More of a jab at Nintendo than a Wii wheel. Credit for that.
@pangbulle: you would be too if you were going through a recession.
I love how everyone is bagging on the wheel and saying that "everyone says it sucks" based on that one German review.
*Sigh*'
I have no idea if it sucks or not, but neither do the vast majority of people bashing it.
grovberg, why do you even care? it's a 10 dollar plastic wheel you stick a controller in that people are bagging on. whoopdedoo. did you personally make the wheel? i mean, i'm sure the game controls decently with the wheel. they wouldn't go with the idea if it didn't work at least a little bit...but you can't argue against the fact that an analog stick will always be more precise than...uh...floating...air...twisting. that's why it gets made fun of. also for that one rumor that analog controllers will be gimped in some fashion as opposed to the wheel. you know, nintendo's way of promoting the wheel even more. if anyone can sell a dumbass a plastic white wheel for 10 dollars, it's nintendo.
It's a shame how gimmicky they've turned this game series.
But then the Chickens' gunna get cold... =(
Hey wait what? That's like cheap ripoff of this one that i made. :O

Frisbees work best. In fact, Nintendo should've just gave out a MK Wii Frisbee with ducktape.
Just buy one of those $5 steering wheel covers and tie the Wii-mote to the insert. it. Boom, authentic wheel.
always a pleasure to see those hard working efforts around the internets.
I seriously doubt I'll be picking this game up now that we now nintendo has fucked with it as much as they have, but I think I'll just head to a 99 cent store, pick up a frisbee and cut it to the shape I want.
Of course, if a wheel is necessary to even make controlling the game feel comfortable in your hands, Nintendo has failed miserably.
@Furysetzer: I agree it's really terrible the way they are sticking all these gimmicks in Mario Kart. Next thing we know they'll be putting gimmicks into the actual gameplay too - probably stupid things like bananas you can drop that make people skid out, or attacking other people with turtle shells. It started with the wheel but when they finish, you mark my words, this game will be so full of gimmicks you'll think the gimmicky control method is insignificant! ...oh
