Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G continues to put a hurtin' on the competition, with the PSP expansion shipping close to another half million copies. Most impressive, Capcom. The week is surprisingly heavy in PlayStation family titles, with a quartet of Japanese franchise favorites securing the top half of the top ten chart, most likely helping Sony hardware. Wii Fit edges closer to the 2 million mark, which we expect it to hit mid-May, as Super Smash Bros. Brawl teeters near the end of the top ten. Hang in there, lil' guy!

Comments
What sony taking the top 7? Good week for them it seems. What is this Pro Yakyuu SPirits?
Hey, look! There's Echochrome!
@[KU]Shindokie: Wishes for a Star: I'm guessing it's a baseball game, from the title.
''Hey look! Animal Crossing Wild World and New Super Mario Bros. are still in the top thirty. Who doesn't have these games by now? Come on!''
I have neither...
Boo Hoo.
And I have never seen Monster Hunter in any of it's iterations in a game store, so why exactly is so incredibly popular?
Is it rated highly amongst reviewers here?
Good job Sony. Still the PS3 will have week sales this week (around 13K). They need to get some other SKU's over there. Ever since they got rid of the 20 and 60GB sales have dropped significantly. A hit game would help too
More like top 5, but good work nonetheless for Sony.
@Krondonian:
i guess they cant get enough of catching pocket monsters....
Sony owns the Top 5 and the Bottom 5. Good week for them. PSP hardware numbers should be crazy.
top 5 all playstation. damn it I want Star Ocean: The 2nd evolution!
I'm glad Star Ocean 2: Second Evolution is seeing a strong release! Even though we're still waiting for a release date on The First Departure, it's good to see tri-Ace doing well; wherever that might be is irrelevant to me.
"Hey look! Animal Crossing Wild World and New Super Mario Bros. are still in the top thirty. Who doesn't have these games by now? Come on!" I don't. the DS is my first Nintendo system since the N64.
@Krondonian: While I haven't personally played the game, from everything I've heard about it it's kind of like a single-player MMO about monster hunting. You learn all these trades and take lots of quests to hunt monsters, supply wood, cook food, and obtain herbs while progressing with your character. It's not especially popular among players or reviewers in America but it really appeals to Japanese audiences, sort of like how FPS games are much more popular in America and not very prominent at all in Japan.
Wow, Monster Hunter is guickly approaching Smash Bros in terms of total sales (In Japan).
dear square enix
release the psp versions of star ocean 1 and 2 in north America
- mossberg
I put together how much each one has sold and how much they each sold this week and concluded that Smash Bros. Brawl is not going to outsell Wii Fit. Ever. And I cried.
Bah, I hate Monster Hunter now. I picked up Monster Hunter Freedom for $10 at Gamestop just recently, and it's so frustrating.
Why can't I run in a town, huh? Why?!?!?!?!?!
@Nirolak: Your character never progresses. They just get better equipment. Equipment determines your stats entirely.
Top 5 on Sony platforms AND they've got a title up there desc "The Evil King Returns". How poetic!
@mossberg: Agreed.
Come on Square Enix, I need these Ttar Ocean remakes bad.
Good job for Sony this week.
@Magic Emperor Anima: Eh, STAR.
@Magic Emperor Anima: What? You can't even spell properly and you want a star?
That's pretty huaghty. At least I know I don't deserve a star because my spelling sucks.
Joking. But that's what I thought at first.
PLEASE localise Star Ocean! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! I loved it on the PS1 but a PAL copy of it was SO RARE!
Wii Fit should never outsell Brawl. :(
@Polywhirl: What the are you talking about? You can run in town.
@Polywhirl: Thats what you get for not researching a game before buying it. Nobody said it was an RPG mate. The character progression is YOUR OWN SKILL combined with the gear you wear. By far superior to false set of numbers deciding how GOOD you are at the game.
I want Deca Sports and I don't care who knows it!
well, PS3/PSP have been getting much love lately. God of War: CoO and Final Fantasy VII: CC are golden. Been playing MGS3, Shadow of the Colossus and Valkyrie Profile 2 on PS3 upscaled to 1080. then there's the usual Warhawk, UT3, Everyday Shooter and Super StarDustHD games. Never thought I'd say this but...I really don't need my 360 and my Wii at this point. Hell, as much as I love Ninja Gaiden, DS is getting the screw face in favor of PS3 and PSP love. I actually stopped playing Brawl.
It's going to be even worse when Wipeout HD and Metal Gear Solid IV are released. Good to see Sony fighting the good fight and gaining some ground. Nintendo is quickly becoming the company I want to see lose (Mario Baseball? C'mon dammit...didn't we do enough mario already?)
@Polywhirl: wow...just wow...you bought the game because the box looked pretty didn't you?
The Japanese gamers only buying Japanese products? That's something we've never seen before.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: Sales actually went up when they introduced the 40gb by over 100% for several months, but the sales have died back down now to what it was before the 40gb release. PS3 needs more games and cheaper for the JP market.
@Kyle81:
But after the 20 and 60 were discontinued they dropped even further. You can actually track it from the time they were discontinued to see the significant difference.
Brawl's still going strong.
@Witzbold:
I highly enjoyed the beta for monster hunter when it came to ps2.
was a bit repetitive though. kinda like pso....but a little more bad ass with the dragons and swords.
@Witzbold:
for sure. witz is right, Monster hunter is a skill based RPG, and you can run in town.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: Sales dropped due to people waiting for the 40gb. Same happened with the PSP before slim came out.
@ManjiKengo:
repetitive?? how far did you exactly get in the game?? I have 158 hours in Monster hunter 2 portable, I haven't beat the game yet.
@ManjiKengo: Yeah its basically one of those "social" action games thats just fun with friends. Or if you want to see what your limits are in an action game by taking on all the different monster types in game.
At least the PSP one is a bit more user friendly in terms of mechanics and controls than the PS2 one was.
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: Yes, because as we all know that people with multiple game systems shit all over the ones that dont get any play from them.
Something will come out for your xbox and you'll ignore the hell outta your ps3. I assure you.
Happens all the time with me and new games on my ps2, 360, pc and ds..
@idrisz: Beta.
l2read kthx.
@idrisz: I think he means the basic idea of the game which is town -> combat -> town -> combat -> town -> you get the picture.
Since not everyone finds the combat highly interesting if you know what I mean.
@ManjiKengo:
I played the beta. thx, I can read.
@Kyle81:
*sigh*
Do you even know when the 20 and 60 were discontinued? It was reported on January 8th 2008 that they were discontinued. The 40GB went on sale Nov 12th 2007. The two are not related.
You can see in the weeks after the 20 and 60GB SKU's are discontinued that sales drastically drop week by week until most of the supply is gone (I'm sure there's a few here and there). This isn't because of the demand for the 40GB, but because of the lack of the PS2 BC SKU's.
Obviously going from a 3 SKU market, to a 1 SKU market is going to decrease sales. Even with console sellers like Yakuza 3, the PS3 has barely sold well since the discontinuation.
@HateFate: Baseball sells in Japan? Hadn't expected that.
Anyway, I'm kind of underwhelmed by the Wii Fit sales.
@idrisz: certainly you didn't read what I said when you replied,
"repetitive?? how far did you exactly get in the game?? I have 158 hours in Monster hunter 2 portable, I haven't beat the game yet."
Certainly you don't think I can even finish the full game when it was a beta.
The beta was repetitive as hell. It was like the same 3 areas over and over again with the same bosses over and over again.
Don't misunderstand what I'm saying though. I had tons of fun playing it.
I got to f'in level 255 on PSO. I can deal with repetitive bullshit as long as it's fun.
That being said, I never bought the full version. I got the sony underground beta disk YEARS ago in the mail and I was all "LOLOLOLOL BETA FOR NEW GAME ILL TRY!"
@Candlejack: Yeah baseball is one of the major sports here. Where did you think Matsui, Nomo and Ichiro came from? ;D
The Pro Yakyu Spirits series is rather popular here and has been for quite some time.
@ManjiKengo: doubt it dude. My 360 has been sitting idle since January. I'm going back and playing the games on PS2 I missed and stilling playing the games on PS3 I'm into (some new CTF maps are up for UT3. Awesome stuff, Warhawk's new update is out in a couple of weeks too!) and FF VII:CC is better than I expected. I have so much to play in the Sony camp right now, I'm not playing much else. Playing Shadow of the Colossus and the other games I mentioned has shown me once again that the last generation ended too soon. Last gen consoles were producing some really great product towards the end. It's a shame we'll never see the full potential of those units.
Hey, you have to go with what works for you. Right now, PS3/PSP are working really well for me.
@Witzbold: Well to be honest, I don't know them :P I'm horrible at following sports but Baseball is impossible from the UK. I'm a fool :P
Then Sony should introduce some new SKU with BC there.
Or just kill the PS2 and then gamers will start to upgrade to the PS3.
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: Honestly, go back and check out the prototype cids for ff10. If only the ps2 could do such things.
Anyway since you're playing shadow of the colossus I suppose I can agree with you on your point of view.....FOR NOW!!!! Buwhahaa....... :(
Try out blood will tell. If you've got a bit of cash, a modded ps2 or a swap magic, import Berserk.
Personally I want to stay away from ffCC i don't care how good it is. I'm not interested in the retcons that may or may not be in the game.
I will say this though, Cissinei is f'in hot >.>;
@ManjiKengo: Vids not cids.
The top 5 are all PS games. Yet the PS sales have slowed down... huh?
Sony is gaining ground at least on it's direct competition (Microsoft) lately, and quite a lot actually. The lowered prices in europe didn't stop the gap from increasing there, while now the 360 is more or less table under the PS3 even in USA. I wonder what excuse will Microsoft invent this time (more shortages?) to try and hide the fact that they're loosing ground more or less everywhere.
@Asurastrike: PS3 sales are down, PS2 stales are not going anywhere, as most gamers have a PS2 already in Japan who want one. The PSP sales are up though.
@Witzbold: How do you run? My guy will only walk.
And I've got nothing against the equipment determining stats thingy. I'm completeley fine with that. I was just telling Nirolak, because he thought that your character levels up.
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: Actually, I bought it because of the excellent Japan sales numbers, and hearty recommendations from a number of my friends. Maybe I just haven't played it enough, though.
@Polywhirl: RTFM.
You bought the game didnt you?
Then read the bloody manual.
@Candlejack: Japan has cricket too but it just didnt catch on like baseball did.
At least Japan shares the same enthusias m with the British about football though.
are NPD's tonight?
@Witzbold: Thank god someone else realizes the importance of reading the
