Zero Punctuation Relishes No More Heroes

While Yahtzee was a little bit late to squeeze into our No More Heroes Frankenreview, he still offers a pretty enjoyable review of the game, likening the experience to, among countless other colorful, non sequitur metaphors, Branston Pickle. Having never consumed Branston Pickle, I can only assume that this review is absolutely, utterly false in its conclusion. And as I don't plan on visiting Branston's home in England any time in the near future to try it (or even going to the shelf in any large chain store to buy it), I should live a life of blissful ignorance for some time.

  • I throughly enjoyed No More Heroes. I hope Suda51 makes another one!

  • I have this game but still haven't booted it up yet, so many games to play lately. If anyone was curious there are no spoilers in this episode.

  • Branston pickle is NOT flawed.

  • Never thought I'd hear him use the word 'bellend'.

    I love you Yahtzee.

  • The bit at the beginning with the Strangler's No More Heroes playing made me lol quite a bit.

I've actually played this game and loved it, my favorited Wii game to date. (Yes, fuck your Super Smash Bros Brawl)

  • That Branston pickle must be some tasty stuff.

  • I couldn't buy the game based only on the fact that the hero's name is Travis Touchdown.

    Travis. Touchdown.

  • NMH is my fave Wii game right now, and the best M title since RE4.

Some of the dialogue is so harsh and violent that it makes you go "Oh no you di'n't!"

    Well something.

  • I love how Yahtzee seems to get it right every time.

    (I want a Yahtzee poster)

  • Glad to see Yahtzee enjoyed it. It wasn't a perfect game by any means, but if you own a Wii I'd say it's worth trying out. Definitely an experience.

  • Fuck you Yahtzee, now I want Branston pickle and cheese, and I can't have them, so fuck you, fuck you very much.

I had fun with the game ... but, I think he's pretty much spot on with the critiques.

  • I empathize completely with the phenomenon that is getting the bonus reels after killing the last guy in the room.

That was probably the one thing I hated about NMH...
getting worked over by chance is just annoying.

  • Completely agree with the review, oh and as you can probably tell I loved Killer7 too.

  • While I agree with some of his criticisms I also agree with him that the game is still incredibly fun. The grinding (especially near the end) does get boring near the end, but the characters and storytelling more than make up for it.

  • Very enjoyable game, the story being so out there it's definitely a rent at the very least, though repetitiveness was a tad lacking...I still loved it!

  • The "choking on his own head" bit was absolutely genius.

  • Ah, that reminds me; I still have halfway to go on NMH.

...So many games, so little time...

  • @Ryumeka: Yes he does tend to do that a lot...what to do what to do...

  • "It's open mic night in hell old man; you can sing all you want down there."

No More Heroes fills with you a God Hand-ian level of awe. If you've not played it, go now and do so! Go!

Now only if Suda51 hadnt gimped the Japanese version with censorship and left all the blood in as a big fuck you to all the babies who wanted it censored in the first place. :x

  • His voice thick like sarcastic Marmite. Damn this guy knows how to turn a phrase.

  • Oh yes, Yes, YES!

'Glowing Dragonball Z hair, menacing the walls'. Awesome.

  • I don't have No More Heroes yet, but I do have Branston pickle.... so I'm off to make myself a butty.

  • @Samnub:
You know what? Travis Touchdown is a fucking awesome name.

Naming next character I ever draw Sammy Slapshot.

  • Yahtzee FTW. Too bad I won't a Wii and will never get one.

  • That was actually a very good review. I can't really disagree with anything he said. Still have to say that I like Killer7 more. Anyway, here's to hoping for a No More Heroes 2.

  • Relishes. I get it.

  • Altough there's so much bad things to hate about Nintendo's library of games. Yathzee often ends by admitting the games are fun ! Which doesn't happen often with the competition !

  • What did Limp Bizkit do? Besides fall off the map...

  • @dowingba:
    oh how witty! haha

  • I had fun with the game. For about 2 weeks. Then the constant "grind to fight" formula annoyed me so much I sold the game. The fighting was fun as hell, and the story was really quirky and fun, but everything else ruined it for me. I really tried to force myself to finish it, but after a couple of assinations the game lost its luster for me. I'm pretty sure I'm in a very small minority though, as most people love this game.

  • Thought the game was shit, just like Killer 7. Shitty game with pretentious presentation to make it seem hip and cool. Yea, the game still played like ass.

  • Just like Killer 7, this is one of the greatest games I have ever played in my life! Suda 51 is a genius!

The choice to remove all blood and slashed bodies from he European version, however, was NOT genius...

  • @Kyle81: /agree

And the best part of this review was the end music. Start being funny, damn it.

  • When Yahztee likes a game his reviews tend to be less entertaining, but not so in this case. That was a gooder.

I also found that half the time I got one of the uber-powerups in No More Heroes, it happened when I killed the last guy in the area. Maybe it really is semi-deliberate?

  • Sometimes Yahtzee seems like he is stretching to find reasons not to like a game (I thought his review of uncharted was a bit jaded). But this was PERFECT. The liquid pretentiousness bit was the best in the beginning.

  • Hmmm, well I haven't actually played the game, but I'm reticent to believe that it's anything other than complete shit based on the gameplay videos I've seen...

  • Best closing statement ever.

  • NMH is definitely on the short list of games I intend to get sometime down the road when the Wii craze has died down and the system's price is more palatable.

  • I've played it and I think the game was created with the sole intention of bringing the word over and the word rated together so they could join in unholy union.

This game is excellent, flawed but so creative it overcomes the flaws and is still fun, a state Yahtzee captures well in this review.

Suda51 is rapidly becoming the David Lynch of video game creators, either you love his absurdist and abstract creations and find deeper meaning in them or they fly completely over your head, there is pretty much no in-between position ;)

  • I have to wait till I get home to see this, but...goddamn I hated this game >.<

It's got style, yes, but beyond that, what does it have? Some neat boss fights, and...well, I can't really think of anything else good.

As for why I don't like it, well, it's the chores. Yes, chores. From the moment I started punching on a tree to get some coconuts, I wasn't too ecstatic. Before I knew it, I was freaking mowing grass. Reapeatedly, just to make enough money to fight another person in the game slightly worth a damn.

Sure, there are bounties too, but that brings up another point. Would it have been so hard to get some sort of variety into the mindless people you kill over and over again? You have like...I don't know, 5 or so different enemies, with each looking essentially the same except for what weapon they're holding, until you get to a new boss area, where their skin is replaced so that the Guys A-F that were guards are now freaking baseball players.

The combat, to me, was repetitive and boring, except in the times I got an interesting slot ability, which wasn't often enough to keep me interested. Even the boss fights felt like a long ass quiz on how you fight. Dodge, dodge, dodge, attack during the opening in their defense. Repeat 80 times until they die, and enjoy the one interesting bit in the game, the cinematics.

Personally, I ended up stopping playing after Destroyman, and sold it to a friend. If I want to pick up garbarge and mow lawns, I'll do it where I can actually make money, and don't have to use nasty controls doing so.

As a side note, I am very against selling/trading in my games. With No More Heros, I was hesitant, for about...30 seconds, before putting it in the case and handing it over. I can get more enjoyment out of it by watching a playthrough on YouTube.

Also, is that the European Box Art? I think I like it better than the one we got ;)

  • Mr Wilson you sir, and I say this with greatest respect, are a fool. Branston Pickle, as one of the finest examples of sandwich pickle, is the key to truly great sandwich. You americans can take your PBJ's so beloved by Elvis. For once you have tasted the nirvanic heights of mature chedder and branston pickle combined in the glory of a Cheese and Pickle Sandwich, you my friend have found heaven

  • either you love his absurdist and abstract creations and find deeper meaning in them or they fly completely over your head, there is pretty much no in-between position ;)

Shit, so that's why I didn't like, I'm not as clever as you...

  • "... And it would be AWESOME" I love that line.

  • I disagree with yahtzee this time. I thought this game was terrible.

  • I don't get the part where he forgives the game's flaws for it for being a satire. If NMH didn't satirize other games, would that just make this a bad game? Then again, I like Tarrantino films, and they're all taken from some other genre flick, so I guess I just answered my own question.

Anyway, I can only praise Suda51 (for having a cool name) and Nintendo for taking the chance of releasing this game...in the US...with blood.

  • @Cruithne: Yeah that must be it, I don't understand it. Understanding it must make the gameplay radically change. damn, I wish I would have known.

  • @Kyle81: I love how people automatically label a game as pretentious when they've got nothing else use after playing the "the game was shit" card.

The game was hardly pretentious. The story was highly unrealistic and the only real satire was the slight jab at Western otaku. The game wasn't some grand veiled commentary on the current affairs in the Middle East or culturally and morally bankrupt world we live in. It's the story of a greedy, lecherous, dumbass.

Develop some real opinions for yourself.

  • @Spaz569: Actually meant to reply to the original poster, the italics guy.

  • He's right as (mostly) always.

The only thing really wrong w/ it is the horrible GTA-clone map. The gameplay isn't the best thing ever but it's way more worth playing than almost all the same-same garbage on the market right now.

  • Melted cheese on an Oatcake. With Branston.....

    MMMMMmmmmmmmmmm....

  • Yahtzee wins for using Assassin by Muse for the closing song :). It's good to see that his reviews for liking a game are just as funny.

  • I LIKE IN BRANSTON ENGLAND!!!!! Wow the only thing special is the pickle doesnt say much really. But im glad Yahtzee likes and everyone should try it, perfect add on to a great cheese sandwich!

  • am i the only dude in the universe that didn't like no more heroes? it was ok [jobs were boring and the fights were always repedative and frustrating] but not godlike to the point people put it.

  • Oh how I love NMH... it's really the best original (and new IP) Wii game on the platform as of now. But good thing Yahtzee got alot of it right... but GTA clone? Really... the main map is just a hub.

  • No More Heroes is probably one of the best video game experiences I've had in recent months. Flaws (which I believe are small) aside, it's a great title.

  • Yep, loved the game as well.
Second favorite Wii game for me (SSBB #1), sure hope for a sequel, it's been selling good in the US and Europe I believe, just finished it on bitter last week, got all the cards, I'm just missing 3 T-shirts.
Oh and for anyone in Mexico, you can find at Gameplanet for just 500 pesos, sweet deal if you ask me.

  • I still don't believe that it's a fun game. Every video I've seen of it just looks so unenjoyable.

  • What griding? You end each boss fight with about half the cash you need to enter the next one. You go do the day job that opened up (once, maybe twice if you suck and didn't get gold the 1st time) and that opens up 2 assination missions and a free fight. Go do those, and you've got your entry fee. Now, if you want to buy all the in-game clothes and extras, then it's gonna cost you more, but that's all optional.
