The latest chapter in the ever-expanding Lord of the Rings Online introduces Forochel, a new region which lies in the far, frozen north of Eriador, which gives players their very first chance to see the ocean in the game. It's funny how you don't notice such a thing missing until it's pointed out to you. Along with giant patches of water, Book 13: Doom of the Last-king promises new cold-based terrain effects. What that means exactly I have no idea. Perhaps slippery patches of ice? It's about time for an MMO to introduce slippery patches of ice. Failing that, some really well-crafted fjords. Turbine promises more info on the next free expansion shortly. For now, it's LotRO on ice!

city of heroes has had slippery patches of ice for years now :P
Based on one of the recent interviews, I'd guess "cold based terrain effects" means damage over time for being in icy water.
LOTRO does so many things right and so many things so, so, so wrong.
@Mohican: Do we have any examples?
Everquest 1 had slippery ice, and a slippery patch of slimy ground in a dungeon.. that was at release 8 years ago.
@Rathus: Was just about to point that out... Guk for the slimy ground and Permafrost for the ice.
Every bit of ground in Vanguard was slippery. Yes, I sadly played it at one point in my life. And yes I sadly enjoyed bits of it. I'll cry in the corner now.
Also, supposedly DOTs for being in the wilderness too long, and possibly for being stuck in a snow storm.
Not to split hairs (or hares), City of Heroes had slippery ice long ago.
Does anyone know if previous games had slippery ice? Having a pretty rough time trying to find out.
Mario Bros 2 had slippery ice!
@Yahto: Yeah me too - let me know if you can dig up anything on it.
Everquest started with slippery ice in permafrost and guk, and then the later expansions included segments of similar terrain (including a hair-thin icy walkway over the top of Velketor's Lab)
Yeppers EQ had slippery ice AND slime!
Very nice Hitchhikers' reference. We all love well crafted fjords.
I feel like a putz now for reading the article and thinking, "Hey! EVERQUEST HAD SLIPPERY ICE. I OUGHT TO COMMENT and enlighten the masses."
I think I'm going to have to dig up my LoTRO account and check this out. Battle Wooly Mammoths? Hell. Yes.
LotRO on Ice?
I do not need to see Aragorn in a leotard.
I keep meaning to try this game out again. I was always such a big fan of LOTR in my youth and I remember being excited for this MMO. When it was released I could just never justify the monthly fee though.
I figured way more WoW burnouts would be playing LOTRO by now.. it's a really well done game, and very similar in setup and play to WoW. Also, the free content they've released since launch is nothing short of spectacular.. WoW fans get a few new dungeons with each patch, but LOTRO fans get a freakin' OCEAN.
Lotro is a breath of fresh air...from an avid WOW player...I enjoy them both...for different reasons. I hope Lotro continues to grow...Turbine has done such a wonderful job!
So wait, it's called "Doom of the Last-king" and located in the "far, frozen north"?
Dare I point out the resemblance to WoW's expansion, "Wrath of the Lich King"?
@Vorpal: There are already Mammoths to fight up in the Misty Mountains, so get to it!
@Reilaos~: It's not whether you need to see him; you want to see him.
Yup EQ was the First MMO I can think of with ice.... NOW if LOTRO wants to be the first to have boot attachments such as climbing spikes or snowshoes to negate that negate that slip. Then that would be something
