Interplay Entertainment sure is making a come back. Late last year they were talking about securing cash for their proposed Fallout MMO, then they set up a sexy new website and now they're gushing about their 520 percent jump in revenue and churning out sequels.
During their annual earnings report the company said that their net revenue for last year was just over $6 million, with a net income of $5.86 million, most of which came from the sale of the Fallout IP.
The company also went over what they called a two-pronged strategy for 2008. Prong one: Secure loads of money to turn Fallout into a money-printing MMO. Prong two: create sequels, lots of sequels.
At the same time, the company will leverage its portfolio of gaming properties by creating sequels to some of its most successful games, including Earthworm Jim, Dark Alliance, Descent, and MDK.
Interplay says they want to do all of this in-house and is currently on a hiring binge.
Massively Multiplayer Online Game, Sequels Seen as Key to Resurgence
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., April 8, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Interplay Entertainment Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: IPLY - News) recently announced its earnings for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2007, and its plan for the company going forward.
Net revenues for the year ended December 31, 2007 were $6,001,000, an increase of 520 percent compared to the same period in 2006.
The Company reported net income of $5.86 million, or $.059 per basic share and $.057 per diluted share, compared to net income of $3.08 million, or $.032 per basic and diluted share, in the same period last year. The net income reported in the twelve-month period of this year was primarily the result of the recording of $5,750,000 in income from recognition of the sale of the "Fallout" intellectual property.
In addition to reporting the annual results, the company also pointed to its two-pronged growth strategy. First, management is working to secure funding for the development of a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) based on the popular "Fallout" franchise. Interplay sold "Fallout" in 2007 while obtaining a license back, under certain conditions, to create and develop a "Fallout" MMOG.
At the same time, the company will leverage its portfolio of gaming properties by creating sequels to some of its most successful games, including Earthworm Jim, Dark Alliance, Descent, and MDK.
The company has recently reinitiated its in-house game development studio, and is hiring game developers.
Interplay Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Herve Caen said, "2007 set the foundation for our growth strategy. Going forward, we have the vision, unique intellectual property, and low debt and operational costs to help us pursue financing for our various projects. Our new Website will streamline our ability to communicate development progress with the public, share brand information with the fans and support our customers."

OMG Decent Freespace: re-made would me amazing.com
Descent??? OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Oh hell yes! Please let this be true. It would be highly win to see EWJ and MDK be brought back from the grave.
The will fuck it up. I just feel it. They are just raiding the family catacombs for old corpses to loot.
Dying to see more of the Decent Freespace series >< the best space shotter simulator there ever was.
Hey, look at that, Interplay remembered they made the Clayfighter games!
@Dakobah:
please excuse my misspellings, i was to excited to check what i had typed.

"OMG descent Freespace remade would be amazing.com"
@Witzbold: well, if you are into necrofilia... godspeed!
EWJ FTW!!
Dark Alliance can stay dead though. ;D
Hope it's better than EWJ3D...that thing stunk to high heaven.
Here's hoping for a new Clay Fighter...that was Interplay, right?
Hell yes! More Earthworm Jim, more MDK, more Dark Alliance! This can only be a good thing!
EWJ and Descent...whoot! MDK was a game I always wanted to try but never did. Looks like I'll have to hunt it down to give it a go.
Earthworm Jim!!! when can we expect them? in 2-3 years? I'll wait!
I would love to see a sequel to Descent!!!
I loved the originals on the Playstation.
@Witzbold: You speak false sir! All hail Dark Alliance!
OMG, I will poo myself if a new Descent game comes out!! Those games (the originals and Freespace) totally rocked! Been playing since '94 :)
Fallout MMO would be full of awesome.
Earthworm Jim = awesome
MDK = mega super cannot even describe how awesome...
@Witzbold: Here here.
Actually, scratch that. Fallout *anything* would be full of awesome.
Descent and MDK sequels... in the same sentence...
/falloutofchair
@PapaBear434:
Seconded.
I loved EWJ and MDK I'd love to see them brought back!
Bring IT!!!!
I hope they realize that game design counts ... they can't just throw sequels out there and expect money to roll in, especially since some of those properties haven't seen the light in a gaming eternity.
I really, really want them to be sucessful, though ... some of those properties are awesome -- I'd love a next-gen Descent, among other things. It would be nice to see another publisher be successful.
Personally, if they want to get a cash infusion, they should do what Capcom is doing -- take the original Earthworm Jim and put it into an updated 3D engine with great graphics ... but keep the gameplay 2D.
YAAAAAAY MDK!!!!!!
Okay, MDK was one of my favorite games along with Earthworm Jim but why couldn't they finish the sequels for Oddworld and make it like the one for PSone and not that crap they made on the xbox.
For the love of god... i hope descent includes freespace >.
New MDK! YESSSS!
Jim? JIM?!? Praise the Lord, my prayers have been answered.
Witz! MDK! HAHAH Oh man. What about DRAGON WARS??????? Where's my modern remake? I want to wrestle Enkidu in all his half naked 3d glory.
See avatar: /cheer
/facepalm at hopeful fanboism
Since we are on the Nostailga train with interplay i would like to see Battle Chess remade on XBLA/PSN/VC or ported with extra features like multiplayer over network or something.
Also Descent 1 was the first game i did modem to modem connection to play online with someone. It was also the first game i played where i could make levels for it, add enimies, powerups.
oh the memories of descent, we laughed and cried together.
Awesome! I want all those games to come back.
Yes please! Hopefully they don't make EWJ into 3D - unless they can pull it off that is.
For some reason I thought Atari owned Earthworm Jim.
Still, I have to admit that I'm skeptical about this news. Interplay went under for a reason: the guys running the show made some truly abysmal business decisions. Maybe they've learned their lesson since then, but after their fuckups the first time caused Black Isle Studios to shut down, they've got a lot left to prove for me, personally.
BTW.... someone explain to my ignorant self what MDK is, please.
Oooh! New MDK! Been wanting one of those for years!
I loved the first on Playstation and the second on Dreamcast.
My local GameStop has MDK 2 the PS2 version for like 2 or 3 dollars. Anybody played that version? Is it good?
What about Out Of This World?! BAH!
Descent! Give me a new Descent, for the love of God!
@blackadvent: If you're asking what MDK stands for, there's some confusion over that. It's most commonly known as Murder Death Kill, but it goes by a slew of other names as well. The official name for the game and what appears on the box is MDK, so technically it doesn't stand for anything, and it stands for lots of things.
EARTHWORM JIM?! /faint
[en.wikipedia.org]
That is all. One 3.5 inch disk. 16 colors on your 386. Animated Gif battles. I need to find a way to emulate it for my Dual Core. I don't think it'll work for Dragon Wars the way it did for Rise of the Triads.
A new Earthworm Jim + the cartoons + an archive collection of all the old games in one package would make me totally happy.
Hell, just make Earthworm Jim DS. It's a perfect game for the DS. I can just imagine the great control with the touchpad.
I still want my Wild 9 sequel
Please let them get hilarious writers for Earthworm Jim, and keep the gameplay 2D (DS game plz). I would be all over that.
Oh and, keep the difficulty up, none of that super easy die-two-or-three-times-on-a-few-bosses-but-everything-else-is-easy stuff.

YAY for the material defender! 16 player descent matches on Live plz (not asking for 32 player matches on my PC - no chance what I have now could run a new Descent game)
april 1st was a week ago.
Earthworm Jim was some of the funniest, weirdest gaming I ever experienced. I hope they can pull off a sequel after all these years (was the N64 game any good???).
Earthworm Jim needs to be put on the XBLA.
Earthworm jim?! wow all i can say is...........
grooovy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@mangajunky: Yeah that would be awesome or even to put the cartoons on a extra DVD. well they did if for Sam & Max iam sure they can do it for EWJ.
