Wage An Endless War Against This Warhammer 40K MMO Info

A two-year wait gives us plenty of time to read up on THQ's Warhammer 40K MMO, so you can take your time with this. A sentence a week should ration things out nicely. The latest issue of PC Gamer has some real, actual information on the project, including the fact there'll be large-scale combat, you can naturally form squads/chapters and that, according to creative director Joe Madureira, there'll be "tons of stuff hanging off your character, weapons, scrolls... we are going to have the coolest looking characters of any MMO, ever". Oh, and fans of Space Hulk, know that the game will feature, amongst stuff like crumbling cities and alien temples, the ability to explore space hulks.

  • I have an infinite amount more interest in a 40k mmo than the fantasy one. Hears hoping for a playable Tyranid race.

  • Hell yeah, it's about time!

  • Space hulk was such an insane game. So much fun. So... stacked against the humans.

  • Seems promising. I wouldn't mind an epic war MMO that didn't involve Elves. Hopefully combat will feel like REAL war and not just a small group thing like the others. Man this makes me wish someone would make an ALIENS MMO. Imagine massive marines invading a whole planet overrun by Aliens.

  • Years away....Dammit....

  • @Otacon91: Uh....it will involve Elves. Just...Elves in SPACE

  • @Luke Plunkett: they'll be badass, space marine suit wearing elves!!!

  • The Warhammer and Warhammer 40K MMOs both sound pretty interesting to me. Depending on how good they are and how much (or rather how little grinding) there is, I might consider getting back into playing an MMO for one or both of them.

  • I think it's PC Gamer US...

  • I really hope they don't decide to do 'Forces of Order' vs 'Forces of Disorder'. If they include all the races, then they should really have them interact in the way they are meant too. The idea of the Necrons or Tyranids fighting along side any other race is just stupid.

Looking in my mailbox every day!!!

  • Well to be honest I'm still skeptical about what the game entails. We've been hearing about its rumored development for a while now and some of the ideas seem pretty out there when compared to what's going to be available in Age of Conan and WAR.

It'd be interesting to see them pull off the space hulk exploration bits without using instance portals.

  • Though I have sworn off MMOs after kicking a crazy addiction to WoW, this is really, really tempting.

  • @Monger King: Amen.

That's the one thing about the fantasy thing that I can't suspend disbelief for: how you can look at the universe and pull this whole superfriends vs legion of doom dynamic out of your ass.

  • my life is officially over if this kicks off. I've been saying for years that the Fluff from warhammer 40k is the most insane and interesting stuff to come out of the sci fi realm ever.

how could starcraft exist without it?

  • @excel_excel: I always thought 40k elves were the Eldar. But oh god how i want me a Crisis Suit soooo bad.

  • Looks. So. Cool. Must wipe. Drool from. Face.

  • THQ has done a great job with the 40K DoW series IMO, I'm really interested to see how they put this together.

But not as interested as I am in the inevitable flame war when people start commenting "man, this looks a lot like Starcraft"...

  • Man I'm really dissapointed this isn't something akin to Planetside. I'm having a real hard time imagening WoW click combat being fun for 40k.

Well WoW started with 8 races, and I guess if you take out Grey Knights and Adepta Sororitas, you get 4 good and 5 bad. Although, I'm having a tough time imagening Space Marines allying with Tau AND Eldar unless there was some serious shit at stake. Same goes for Dark Eldar(who can barely ally with themselves according to a handy GW chart) and lord knows how Tyranids or Necron would factor in.

We're talkin' some serious fluff manipulation or some seriousley creative race/alliance design for the general scheme of things.

If they include the Guard without making me think, "how am I possibly owning a Chaos Marine with a lasgun," I'll be seriousley impressed.

  • I'm suitably impressed.

I don't even care if the game sucks, I'll play it. Just like I did with Star Wars galaxies.

But now I'm definitely wondering how getting new weapons and armor will be handled. Space Marines only have like 3 (or 4 depending) levels of armor - Scout, Tactical, *Assault*, and Terminator. And on top of that only First Squads of a Chapter usually have Termie armor...and what about guns? Bolters are pretty much it half the time...

  • I think the way to balance this is make it single player squad based - each player controls one hero unit, and then adds squad members for some in-game currency. That way, IG may be weak, but you can add 12 soldiers, while Tyranids can only add 2 or 3. Same way you balance the tabletop, or DoW.

I agree with a lot of the other posters, that "order vs. disorder" would be twisting the source and ruining the feel of the game. Hope they don't go in that direction.

  • @Garro: Please don't tell me it's turn based, clicky, autoattack nonsense instead of being realtime :(

mmo's need to get out of that boat, combat and killing stuff is the main focus of these games. Standard combat is just not as fun(especally when you do it 1000000000 times)and if you lose the fun out of combat and killing... Well it's just big cup of fail. :(

  • @Luke Plunkett: Fucking Elves.... There more contagious in MMO's than Aids.

  • @Lokku: "...the title's definitely an MMORPG as opposed to what could have been a Planetside-esque MMOFPS. But despite that it appears developer Vigil Games is aiming for a reasonably in-depth combat system, as it's orientated around cover, suppressive fire and flanking."

Sounds like a weird middle ground. Click systems with tactics... Who knows, it might work better than what we're thinking. I just firmly believe a real time system would be infinitely more entertaining and rife with possibility, though.

  • @Garro: Interesting, I would like to stay optimistic for I love 40k world and lore, I would of loved it if it was more FPS... Better wait and see then.

  • Here's hoping for more of a tactical MMO with most of the customizing and upgrading being via like talent or perk trees, and bolted on dangly/spiky bits.

As opposed to a constant item grind - "Oh look, an [Eldritch Tome of the Whale]" and upgrading to ever more doofy and mismatched armor and weapon pieces sets every few levels.

They'd really better have their stuff together; this is one of those properties where if you don't do it right you shouldn't even bother. Kinda close doesn't fly here. Some kind of convoluted ret-con (blood elves, I'm looking at you) to allow half these races to team up versus the other half just won't fly.

  • DEATH KORPS. Oh god please Death Korps of Krieg.

  • I hope that the universe, or the servers are balanced a little bit like the fluff in 40k. Well. Sort of.

I'm just not really looking forward to playing this game with 100,000 space wolf players. Because that's pretty much what it's going to come down to in the end, I'm afraid.

Chapters of space marines are limited to 1,000. They should cap the servers to actually limit the chapters to 1,000.

Besides, being a rogue trader would be where it's at.

  • @Karabiner98Kurz: Also, yes. You win.

  • oh god I want this so bad. This has been the one MMO I'm just itching to play since my 2 years of WoW.

  • @Lokku: The foolish man places his trust in luck, the wise man puts his trust in the Emperor.

@the-hypnotoad: Hope is the first step on the road to dissapointment. It would make a lot more sense to do a free for all with the races instead of alliances, and shift the focus towards combat and gaining/losing territory in persistant battlegrounds rather than looting for armor or guns... I mean honestly, finding a demon killing power sword from the Inquisition, okay that'd be a sweet reward, but bolters and lasguns... They don't speak of epic titles and effects to me.

  • I'd say City of Heroes has the coolest looking MMO characters ever, but superheroes, as much as I love them, cannot stand up to Warhammer 40k.

I want my Space Marine Commander on an attack motorcycle!

  • @Aleeightone: That's where linking to that one PA comic, repeatedly and consistently, should come in handy. How many 14yo idiots will want to take on their favorite comic? Or perhaps the cognitive dissonance will result in them spontaneously combusting, with the added side benefit that it will be possible to listen to Live without aural assault.

  • @Garro:
    @Aleeightone:

Well if you combine these two things it would work. That is as you "level up" you know get xp, credits whatever... you are able to control or recruit more NPC ai units of your faction.
Then the factions will fight in massive battles on different worlds (sorta like the islands on Planetside) the more worlds a faction controls the more xp or credits ect. each player of that faction will get. What I mean is that each faction will have a "home world" and when you log in you can chose to "transport" to the battle zones on other worlds. Maybe even be able to man persistant bases on 'fronts' on these worlds. These bases will allow the spawning of PCs and NPC AIs directly into the battle front.

Maybe to balance out the fun you could do something like have different ability trees for each type of PC.
    What I mean is this:
Say when you make a character you pick which TT based faction. Within that faction you pick a command style hero that you play as yourself.
For example if you pick Imperial Guard --> Commissar as your character.
Now each faction would have certain "specialties". Say the Marine faction will focus on very powerful PC character fighting ability. The Imperial guard will focus more on NPC AI troop supporting ability, base building, and vehicals.
As a PC of a certain 'level' you can spawn and command different types and numbers of troops.
So in the formentioned Commissar example. Say when the PC spawns into a raging battle front he can then go to the front's HQ for his side and select AI troops to command depending on his level or skill tree selections. For example you could spec in Imperial Guard regular troops alot and be able to field an assload of them at once and have support abillites such as my fav DOW one "Execute" :)
Or you could play a Space Marine commander and spec a lot in your own fighting ability and have some potential to spawn maybe a squad of SM badasses for support.

Also this game would just have to have highly persistent corpses on the battle field.

Can you imagine? Being a Commissar and you and your Imperial Guard brothers (PC and NPC alike, hundreds in all) holding the line vs a Greenskin horde that is clamoring over the bodies of the fallen in order to tear off your head? All in first person MMO style with the support of a few well designed "battle map" huds to command troops with.

I think I might have to clean up now.

  • @Dresarius: Why da puny humies wn youse can be da ORKS! WAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!

I cannot WAIT to see what Chaos look like.

  • I'd be a Commissar. Then I'd get to freely gank other players when they start to back off from a fight :P

  • Wow, joe madureira! Nobody asked him when the next issue of battle chasers is coming out?

  • I say "glory to the first man to die!"

I cant imagine how you would play Tyranid. This would be the only MMO id be willing to put my life into.

  • DREADNAUGHT!!!!!!!!!

  • @sh0tgunn0strils:

    C'tan!

  • ok so this is definitely different than Warhammer Online that's coming out later this year right? I mistook the other article for talking about warhammer online

  • I'd like to play Tao... Not bloodly likely as a starter race but I want Tao damn it.

  • *looks at the article*

It's not called lore! It's FLUFF!

Anyway, something that I'm speculating about:
We now know that the game will be an MMORPG, and the article also states plans are being made for larger battles than what Warhammer Online will feature. Well, normally, I think that the size of a battle would depend entirely on the number of players present, but I doubt this plan is flatout for more people to play 40k than Fantasy. With this in mind, what if "players will be able to form squads" actually means that a PLAYER CONTROLS AN ENTIRE SQUAD rather than just one character? Not only does this upsize the battlefield, but I think it could also serve as a method of balancing the different races. How could an Imperial Guard player possibly compare to a Space Marine player? By having four times more guys then he does! Also, along with squads, some people may control vehicles, instead. Sounds unlikely on being the correct interpretation of those words, sure, but I think it's at least a plausible idea.

    ...

Of course, what Impurethinker said could work, too... Something like your player character being a "sergeant" figure who would command AI subordinates, the precise number depending upon your level and race type.

  • I demand to be able to play a battle-hardened Sister.

  • I really hope this will be a game that plays like Planetside. I'm dying for a decent MMOFPS to come out. I hate SOE for ruining Planetside with their BFR crap.

  • @Yin: *smirks* there are so many responses to that sentence, I cannot say them all!

  • It they make this good, my social life is over.

  • I just hope they dont cop out and make it a T game. M rating in warhammer for the win.

And yea its warhammer so everyone vs everyone please. Warhammer online is a letdown really, NO NURGLE WTF!!!
