Games for Windows: The Official Magazine (formerly known as Computer Gaming World) has announced that the publication is pulling from the printed market to be hosted at 1UP.com. Games for Windows itself only made it through 17 issues before ceasing traditional publication.
Despite knowing that my own place of work is part of the cause greater, the death of so many print publications is unfortunate. So in the midst of all the "great opportunity" euphemisms, it's refreshing to see editor-in-chief Jeff Green liken the experience to " the passing of a loved one" with unrestrained melodrama. Those with standing subscriptions will be contacted shortly.
Games For Windows Magazine Moves Online [1UP]

Comments
I listen to their podcast religiously.
The reason games for Windows died was because it was a blatant Microsoft shill.
Every game- 10/10! Buy it for Windows!
Reminds me of when NOM changed to ONM. Terrible times.
@Polywhirl: No it wasn't. They were pretty clear that they wouldn't do that.
Perhaps it's all the free subscriptions. I never paid for it but I've been getting it for a year now. Nice magazine though...I canceled my PC Gamer subscription a few months back (after like 15 years) and this held me over.
It's true, Mark - Kotaku has played a large part in the death of print. But it was inevitable - if it wasn't you it would have been someone else.
@Polywhirl: Obviously you never read the magazine or listened to their podcast.
@Polywhirl:
It was the only blatant shill rag our there too! right?
Video game magazines, especially PC games one, are so lame. They "pre-view" games that are 2-3 years away from release, and "review" games that have been out for months. The best part is when they have a cover story talking about a game, and we know that the plug has already been pulled on it!
Sorry, no tears being shed here.
/surprised?
@Polywhirl: You are a troll with a small penis.
@Polywhirl:
Wow okay, you have obviously never read the magazine. They are possibly the most truthful publication I've read in some time... and they're not afraid to say that GfW LIVE sucks.
@Polywhirl: You never read the magazine it seems. It was probably the best Windows PC gaming magazine out there and you the straight shit on what's going on in the PC gaming world. Grognards will never die!
@Polywhirl: If you had read it, you would know that they were some of the hardest reviewers around. 3s and 4s out of 10 werent uncommon for major games.
The name on the magazine was more akin to your local ballpark having HPs name on it or something. The team is still just a team.
I really don't understand how America with a population over 5 times that of Britain, is losing magazines so fast where if anything (at least to me) Britain seems to have a new one every so often.
Jesus, this now seems more of a "hate Polywhirl" affair than anything else. I'm sad to see the magazine die, but it's not like it's actually gone. We'll still read it. :)
I'm just glad to see that they're not completely gone. I'm a big fan of the crew, and love reading their work.
Sad news, hopefully they won't get read of Jeff or Shown. I don't play PC games but I love their podcast (is hilarious).
And Polywhirl: You couldn't be more wrong.
Disappointing. GFW was a great magazine, but I suspected things were going bad when the latest issue (The Sims 3) was billed as a combo April/May issue.
I signed myself up, my brothers up, and like three or four of my friends up when they had a free subscription thing going on somewhere. Had to wonder how that worked for them.
@Polywhirl: You're inferior to Polywrath!
Stage 1 Pokemon hate aside, I did like print magazines, if only because of the countless times they kept me occupied in an airport, or in a long car trip...at one point I Had this gigantic stack of demo discs from PC Gamer. I didn't even know what half the games were, I just loved free stuff!
That's too bad ... I hate seeing print die off like this. I've really enjoyed the magazine quite a bit. There were a couple columns I read every single month.
I guess I better start demanding a refund for my free subscription :P
Unfortunate, but the new format could never seem to decide which audience it should cater toward: the vapid internet crowd or the PC gaming veterans. It was nice to see a magazine willing to review non-mainstream games, but to review them in 1 or 2 paragraphs nullified the afore mentioned service.
Not saying it was a total bomb, of course, because it wasn't. I just looked forward to each new issue with less and less anticipation.
And who knows, perhaps online they will be able to expand their articles without having to defend themselves so much (PS3 adverts, the Microsoft "advertorials," et cetera).
The problem is it's a 2 way street. They could have gone with more ads but would have ended up like PC Gamer/Cell Phone Gaming Monthly.
I wrote a post when I canceled that subscription, but I do realize how hard the print industry is getting nevertheless.

@vizruy1: It's REALLY unlikely that they'll be fired, might decide themselves to leave (but it's not that likely atm either).
And GFW is certainly one of the best gaming podcasts there is.
@Polywhirl: Excuse me?!? Care to give an example?
If you had read their magazine or listened to any of their podcasts you'd see that they are always critising Microsoft, pointing out how much better Steam is.
Next Banhammer Day,
Polywhirl is gone.
You know, this reminds me how much I miss PC Accelerator too. :(
I was never a grognard but I always appreciated their games and attention to detail.
As PC game retail space and publication shrinks, I fondly remember years gone by. Wing Commander III, Sierra adventure games, X-Wing, Master of Orion, Star Control II, Aces of Europe.
Sometimes I wish it were 1997 again.
I love their podcast it's really a great listen. Although this is kind of the eventuality of print magazines, I think the last time I looked at a game magazine was a few months ago but thats only because a friend of mine actually has a subscription to EGM. Other then that I haven't looked at a magazine since I was 13. I don't think it's cause the magazine was bad but the fact that you could get the information from the internet easily really makes it difficult for the magazine to keep people interested. I'm glad to know that the editors are gonna work on the PC end of 1UP since that is really lacking.
Damn, it was great bathroom reading material. I'm not surprised though. Giving out free subscriptions, plus the fact that they're inherently a month+ behind anything that's online makes it even less beneficial to subscribe to.
Damnit. Some good people writing over there.
I love magazines, no matter who writes them. It's sad that it's going online. I prefer print that I can hold.
Damn. That's one of the few print magazines I read religiously. Moving it to 1UP.com pretty much guarantees I'll never read anything from GFW ever again. I'll have to subscribe to some other PC-centric gaming magazine.
Now, if it had been EGM, that would've been no great loss.
Pretty sure my subscription to GFW wasn't set to run out until 2020.
Well damn. I signed up for the 2 year subscription when it switched to GFW... I wonder what they'll offer me for compensaton since I already subscribe to their sister mag EGM.
You'll be missed GFW.
I miss the old PCXL
I was one of the one that got the free subscription and the magazine was great, I love their tech section and the section about indies games and such. I was going to order a 2 years subsription but too late now, guess I'll order a renew of onion news instead.
ROFL, I went to 1up About the merge and the first thing I get is an advertisement to subscribe to Games for Windows. I thought that was hilarious!
I love the writing for GFW--it has alot of what made CGW great, and I can't wait to see if they'll make it work. Magazines are, on the whole, on the way out--especially with the proliferation of portable devices and WiFi, and it's good that they're trying to make the transition. It would suck if they couldn't keep the staff together and ended up scattered to various projects. One of the things that always depressed me about Erik Wolpaw as that I loved his writing, but he didn't have a steady outlet for me to enjoy his work, after OMM froze.
Go GFW!
and screw EGM. I just feel it's important to throw that in there.
@Sullyville:
So someone that has a opinion that is different from yours they should be banned?
@deathbunny: egm rocks you fool
and you
@Spoony Bard: u are a troll, ever read the mag? ever listen to their podcasts? DO U EVEN KNOW WHAT GAMES FOR WINDOWS MAGAZINE IS?! and ur name is gay, Lyrai said it, Polywrath is much better
as others said their podcast is awesome. Despite the point its in theory with games for windows focus they have a great mix of covering all platforms and then also bringing in some fun distracting offtopic elements. I hope they will continue it for a long time because its a joy each week. Also as said by others its the nature of the beast that print mags go down and i myself haven´t bought a mag for quite a while, i think the same will happen to pretty much all mags with time and the ones who switch over to the web earlier are maybe actually in better shape later.
What went down as print mag can become very popular on the web, me for example i never saw the gfw mag (since it didn´t come out here ever) and i discovered 1up and the podcast on the net and since then listen to it each week, also read the 1up pages often and watch the 1up show each week,too.
So yeah, i´m sure the gfw guys are all a bit sad now, don´t worry guys, there are many who like what you do and you will probably gain way more fans on the web with time.
Everyone should check out the 1up show
[www.1up.com]
and the 1up podcasts
[www.1up.com]
I can especially recommend 1up Yours and GFW.
Keep it up there Jeff, Shawn and all the crew there, you do great stuff.
I always thought it was amusing that Games for Windows magazine was less 'Yay Microsoft!' and 'Wow Vista is awesome you should upgrade like right now 'kay!' than PC Gamer.
Bah, I'm actually going to miss them. They'll probably replace my subscription with EGM then. Yech.
Unfortunate, for a magazine branded with a Windows logo they were pretty straightforward with their coverage, from what I could tell.
However, if/when its big brother magazine EGM goes plop, I will dance on the fucking grave. EGM is horrid.
Nooooo! WHAT THE HELL?! This sucks. I loved that magazine even when it became GFW. Damn.
Well maybe now EGM will finally get PC reviews. I honestly believe the only reason it didnt have PC game coverage and reviews was because of CGW/GFW being on the same little network of magazines. Ziff davis didnt want to cannibalize it.
@Polywhirl:
Games for Windows was the former Computer Gaming World, and in no form did they ever shill for Microsoft. You've never read this magazine.
Wow, one person (PolyWhirl) gives his opinion and everyone else jumps on him. And someone called for him to be BANNED?
From what I'm reading, most of the people who are insulting a guy for giving his OPINION should be banned for flaming.
Either way, RIP GFW mag.
A completely uninformed and hateful opinion?
@Providence: He shouldnt be banned, that is ridiculous, but he isnt really giving a fair opinion. He is trolling more than anything.
He clearly knows nothing about the magazine, so i dont know why he even feels compelled to say anything bad about it.
@Providence: He didn't state an opinion, he blatantly lied. Probably due to the fact he hates Microsoft (speculation). I don't think he should be banned though.
I loved GFW magazine, too bad it's out of print.
Really, he's just unfortunate to be the second comment. And I don't see why Polywhirl should care about any of these responses, but I do agree we certainly don't need any more of them.
Well shit, I loved that magazine. Started getting it after the exclusive for WoW before it even came out. What the hell is going to hold me over during school now? Work!?
^@providence

If there's one thing Kotaku needs; it's an edit button...
