Hulk Wii Screens - No Comment

First I said that I thought the Xbox 360 screenshots for Sega's game of the upcoming The Incredible Hulk film were pretty, and people bitched. Then I opined that the 360 trailer Sega released had completely failed to generate any excitement for the game, and people bitched some more. Now Sega has released screenshots for the Wii version of the game, and I hesitate to say anything. I could piss off Wii fans by complaining about the blocky scenery, blotchy textures and overall lack of detail, but I won't do that, because I don't want to piss anyone off. If Sega wants Wii Hulk's skin to look like a green corpse with similarly verdant blood-marbling, then more power to them. Go Sega go!

  • I don't know for a Wii game it doesn't look bad at all - of course you can't compare it to the 360 and PS3 level a graphics - but for the Wii I think it does the job.

No one buys Wii games for graphics -

  • I am still waiting to hear what people (and by "people" I mean the mainstream gaming press) think is an appropriate graphical level for a Wii title.

  • Is this a VC game?

  • they could've done much much better.. but what did you expect? no one (apart from nintendo themselves) will use the full power of the wii until the ps2 is dead and buried.. we could be seeing a lot of games with graphical quality close to SMG if developers weren't just lazy couch potatoes..

  • Current gen looks awfully last gen. I don't think pretending the Wiimote is a tank's gunbarrel and twirling around my apartment is going to make up for it, either.

  • You 100% sure this is not the PS2 version? ;)

I agree blocky, and a bit washed out, but I think it looks as good/better then H:UD did/does.

  • The monster thingy in the 8th picture is pretty dumb. It's almost as if he's doing the "I can't see you so you can't see me" thing we learned doesn't work in kindergarten while leaving his genitalia completely exposed for attack from that giant thing in the Hulk's hand which I can only guess is a telephone pole.

  • Look at the detail of the sky. It's so.........blue....

  • @roland13x: Appropriate graphical level for a Wii title? Something better than the Gamecube would be nice. How come only Nintendo know how to make games that look better than Gamecube graphics?

The problem is, for some ridiculous reason, alot of people think the Wii is less powerful than a friggin' PS2, and so cheap developers don't have very high standards to live up to.

In actual fact, it is considerably more powerful than an Xbox. And since it uses almost the exact same architecture of the Gamecube, it shouldn't be taking anyone any time at all to "figure out" the hardware and be able to push it. We should already be seeing better than Resident Evil 4 graphics on a regular basis. You remember Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on the Xbox? Yeah, that should be about the bottom limit for Wii graphics.

  • Is that Snake Hulk has grabbed in the 3rd picture? o_O

  • That guy Hulk is punching looks like Goro from Mortal Kombat.

  • @dowingba: Don't blame the developers. I work at a studio that has a handful of Wii titles on our plate, and it's the publishers that are limiting what the developers can do. You want to know why Nintendo makes good Wii games and third party publishers seemingly can't? Time and money. Nintendo gives their devs both.

  • ... Cue news ticker sound...

THIS JUST IN: Fahey states graphical prowess of Wii inferior to PS3 and 360, noone in Kotakuland surprised by results
FROM OUR NEW YORK OFFICE: Fires break out throughout the whole of the internet after Kotaku article reaches Nintendo fansite stronholds, Wii zealots blamed for the violence
BREAKING NEWS: Sky is blue, fanboys are jackasses

  • @dowingba: completely agree! the problem is that they're just porting PS2 games to the Wii and, like i said, we're only going to see 3rd party titles that look almost as good as the first batch of *Nintendo* Wii titles when the PS2 dies! porting saves money and that's how it goes..

  • I could bitch about this article and it's interesting style of humor, but I won't.

  • This doesn't even look half as good as spiderman 2 for ps2/gcn/xbox

this a poor excuse for a game.

  • I could piss off Wii fans by complaining about the blocky scenery, blotchy textures and overall lack of detail, but I won't do that, because I don't want to piss anyone off.

Does anyone have a "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" banner?

  • Ugly graphics on the Wii? No. Say it isn't so!

@dowingba, roland13x: Part of the "problem," I think, is that graphics aren't the premium in this generation. With the last set of consoles, graphics were a very large part of what sold your software. This time around, graphics have been replaced with control schemes as the prime motivation for sale, so devs who are more stingy will de-emphasize graphics over doing stuff with the Wii controls. Graphics don't sell the way they used to, so they're not the focus anymore.

This doesn't explain lazy devs, of course, but every console has more than their share of those.

  • @dowingba:

What you've said is so true.
People keep on blaming Nintendo for the lack of graphically pleasing games, but as with the Gamecube, it's the lazy developers who are to blame.

Look at what Factor 5 did with the Gamecube, and also later on with Capcom and Resident Evil 4....

Just like PCs, as the hardware grows faster and faster, it seems like a majority of developers are getting lazier and lazier....and it's the rare ones, that truly develop something amazing.

  • and ppl want to consider the wii a next gen console...
Because nintendo re-released an improved gamecube with new controllers is not classified as next gen.
N just released their console the same time with the others...

  • @roland13x:
With reference to my above comment.

You have a good point that developers can have their hands tied too.

  • What an horror. o.O

  • They aren't too bad but they are certainly not anything to gaze at.

  • So who decided that the best way to defeat a guy who turns into a big green monster when angry is to shoot streams of piss at him?

  • ignore the bitching, fahey. we as a free society feel the need to freely bitch. dang the bitchered bitches. omg, i'm bitching

  • @steliosco:
And you want to consider a Xbox360 or PS3 a next gen console...

Because it released an improved Xbox/PS with old controllers...is not classified as next gen.

    Oh wait....

  • @Fnor: While I think focusing on "gameplay over graphics" this generation is definitely the right way to go (even in the case of the 360 and PS3), because this generation is sort of an "in-between" gen where even graphically games aren't making much of a leap (in comparison to say, the N64 gen where obviously there was a ridiculous leap in graphics).

This is why, even though Forza 2's graphics are a serious failure in my mind I still think the game was a step in the right direction because dammit it plays so much better than Forza 1. Plus it's online functionality is miles ahead of any of the competition.

And this is why, in my eyes, Rock Band is the most "next gen experience" so far this generation. It's one of the only games I can think of that wasn't possible last generation (with it's ridiculously robust online functionality and it's first-ever-good-use of downloadable content)

But when people pump out these bad looking games, it's only a microcosm of the effort they're putting forth into the titles. If they truly cared about making a AAA title for the system, they'd try to make the game look appealing as well as play well.

Say what you will about the importance of good graphics, but they are important. If this Hulk game ends up being the most fun game ever with the best controls and best storyline and everything, it'd still get a less-than-perfect score simply because of the graphics. Sorry but that's life, publishers!

  • So, what I'm hearing is that no opinion is a good opinion.

  • Ugh. Somehow this looks worse than Ultimate Destruction.

  • Uh, when people bitch, aren't you supposed to just ban them?

  • hahaha how embarassing

    [kotaku.com]

hulk's thumb is clipping through the beam he is carrying!

  • What is the big deal? This is the best looking DS game I've seen yet.

  • The graphics remind me of Counter-Strike circa 10 years ago.

  • The quality of games coming out for the Wii make me angry... you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

  • This is the kind of thing that makes me wish that the Wiimote was just an add-on for the Gamecube and that Nintendo had gone all out in the graphics department.

Admittedly, graphics are not the most important part of the game but when you compare what a Wii game looks like that of a 360/PS3 game, it's almost embarassing.

    Atleast SSBB is fun!

  • sad...the wii can do much better than this.

  • @Uglysad: Sadly, I don't even think you could say that!

Save for a few must-haves (which I believe are all first-party), Nintendo(well really, their 3rd party support, but what's new?) has really disappointed me this generation. After Mario Kart, I'm not quite sure what I have to look forward to on my little white box.

  • I thought they stopped making dreamcast games?

  • @dowingba: Devs don't focus on graphics for business reasons and because of where nintendo placed its console in the market. No matter how hard a developer tried, its graphics would pale in comparision to the PS3 and 360. So why should they make that attempt when 70% of Wii owners bought the console for the controls and won't give a damn what the graphics look like. Welcome to the reality of the Wii.

  • Given the screen shot you have heading this article, yeah, that looks quite ugly. But the others? I don't know - everyone ought to take a really good, long look at Ultimate Destruction. Was it really that great looking? I remember it being quite repetitive and it was difficult to tell one part of the city from another.

  • Wow, more bitching about the Wii being a "casual gaming" system AND the graphics. Don't you guys ever get bored saying the same comments over and over again?

  • @Uglysad: LOL

Games like this is why i own 6 360 games and 1 Wii game.

  • I might be able to run this on my 64

  • Wow. Ugly. Waggle, waggle.

That forst pic in the second row makes it look like the hulk is fighting a student of Mr. Miagi. Where else would he learn the "Crane technique"....

@Mr.SithNinja: ....and WTF is with the bad guy having 2 faces?? Do you have to punch them both to defeat him???

  • I could mention that the whole "wii graphics are teh suxors" articles are played, but I won't.

  • @roland13x:
Since it is often touted as having twice the graphical power of the XBox, I expect to see twice the graphical power of the XBox in the games. There are a few games that have been at the appropriate level, Mario Galaxy comes to mind, but they really should be doing better. Keep in mind that some of the early GameCube games had great graphics. I am still playing last gen, and will for a while, and it is disappointing that some of my Wii games don't live up to PS2 level graphics.

Lazy graphics often are an indicator of lazy development overall. If you saw a rust bucket drive up, you won't expect the inner works to be running perfectly. My old Cutlass looked awful and was awful on the inside. Shoddy graphics are often an indicator that they haven't really tried with anything in the game, so it will lack a lot of polish. Most people would agree that the polish is what can set a good game apart from a great game. Think of the original Halo at E3 compared to what was eventually released. (Probably a mistake to use this example given the large amount of Halo hate.)

  • @keiichimorisato:
i dont know about the xbox, with games that look similar with xbox game(ninja gaiden,halo3) but get a ps3 and tell me if gt5 and ratchet were capable in a ps2.
and i want to play god of war 3 in this gen...

  • I could model this shit and I can't even get a job as a junior. Maybe I should apply for a senior position at Sega?
