Ultima and Tabula Rasa creator Richard Garriott loves two things: Space and rattails. Man not only has his own sputnik, but his own rattails. This October, Garriott and his flowing locks will be blasting off to the International Space Station. He plans on making a spacewalk, which would make him the first civilian with rattails to do so. Historic! To commemorate the event, Seiko is creating a titanium spring-powered "Spring Drive Spacewalk" watch, which will be limited to 99 pieces only — at a price! But really, can you put a price tag on a Richard Garriott watch? Yes, yes you can.

I like him and appreciate the small place in history he will be occupying, but that's a bit too expensive, isn't it?
Ha, I typed that wrong. Can we delete our own comments? I'm sure it will be too expensive. Heck, things limited to 500 units are usually too rich for my blood. :)
OMG, who needs that? The watch doesn't even look good...
@eastx: Nope... you must live with what you said. TRUST ME... it's bitten everyone thats been here a while at least once or twice. Me? Yeah the non edit function has gotten me more then I'm willing to admit.
ON TOPIC: Lucky bastard. Able to sport a rattail. Damn lucky bastard. :D
This is one cool watch. Not only does it have Seiko's fairly new (and expensive) 5R86 spring drive movement, it also only weighs 92 grams despite its massive size (53mm) and titanium case.
Another interesting feature: the watch crown is at 12 o'clock, which is something you don't see too often on wristwatches.
I'd love one (to go with my other Seiko mechanical watches). But I'm probably just as likely to be able to afford a trip into space as this watch.
@amadeus3000: Actually with a gunmetal band that watch would look sick. I'm not a fan of cloth or rubber bands. Speaking of watches... I need to head over to Tokyo Flash. I need a new watch to feed my fetish.
Richard Garriott is one lucky bastard.
Beautiful watch.
People that looks at it and immediately dismisses it should take a look at it again.
Its the same people that will see a patek phillipe and just thinks its ugly when they have no clue.
I have my own sputnik, too. She's amazing, and even cooks for me. Also, she doesn't mind me playing video games, except Dead Rising because "it's boring watching you smash a bunch of zombies that look the same." I love my sputnik; my vozlubleni, vechni sputnik.
@Balance_In_Life (PSN):
I'm sure they chose the cloth band for its functionality, rather than its looks. I mean, this is a watch that is reportedly designed to be worn along with space gloves (the watch is actually designed to be able to survive direct exposure to space).
A light, flexible, adjustable band is just what is needed.
@Marlor:
Saying that though, he's going on a fucking spacewalk... if being able to tell the time is his main concern then I think we need to find someone else!
(I suggest Crecente...)
@Northernsky:
Actually, before I come off sounding like a douche who doesn't appreciate fine watches, let it be known that I do... it was ingrained in me by my parents growing up. I've still got a thing for Chopard watches...
@Marlor: Yeah... but come on. What chance would I have going into space? I mean it's about the same chances of Shindokie getting laid.
Just saying. IF I managed to get my grubby little hands on one of these bad boys... I'd change the band.
@Balance_In_Life (PSN):
If it was a normal watch, I probably would change the band too... but really, the whole point for people buying this limited edition watch is for them to have an "authentic space watch". The band adds to that authenticity.
It's certainly not a watch that you would wear every day. Hell, I even act overprotective when I wear my $300 Seiko Spirit. If I had a $10,000+ limited-edition watch, I'd want to keep it as authentic and pristine as possible.
@Marlor: Don't get me wrong. I see every angle you are coming from. Just I have never enjoyed a watch with that kinda of band. GRANTED this watch CLEARLY wasn't designed with the 25 year old, less then 50k a year crowd.
@Balance_In_Life (PSN):
I see where you are coming from too... I usually put leather bands on all my watches, because metal bracelets and cloth bands just don't suit me.
But I really think the cloth band is part of the appeal of this watch. It's been designed for a purpose, and the band suits that purpose. It also helps keep the weight down to its ridiculously low 92 grams. That's less than most 36mm mechanical watches, and this thing is 53mm.
This is one special watch, and I really admire the thought process that went into every little detail. But I'd never be able to afford to buy one, and even if I could, I'd never dare to wear it.
Why the pic of Chris Eliott?
@Marlor: Yeah, don't get me wrong the watch is a piece of art. But if you were to buy it you'd have to wear it! That's like buying a 250,000 dollar sports car and keeping it parked so it won't get hurt. Gotta show it off man! I'd wear this everywhere! Shit, I'd even drive my sports car to the super market just to show it off.
But you are right. It's clearly an aspect of the watch that's been thought out. You are almost talking me into liking the cloth band! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!! /cry
That is a badass watch.
@Fyren: Sorry, but I think "badass watch" applies more to something from Lange&Söhne.
