Play As Vader, Magic-Strangle Wookies

The above clip features not only the announcement that Darth Vader will be playable in the opening level of Lucasart's Force Unleashed, but also word that via the powers of the force you'll be able to pick a wookie up off the ground and wring his garbling, furry neck. Which should be the clip's highlight, but no! That honour goes to Force Unleashed's project lead, Hayden Blackman, who manages to keep the PR team happy by saying that your force powers are "amped up, over the top and in some cases totally out of control" while somehow keeping a straight face. Well done, Hayden.

  • I saw this during the Spike TV Starwars marathon last night.
Seems like it'll be Assassin's Creed style where you get all your powers in the first level taken away from you and slowly earned back throughout the game.

Fanboys rejoice at the ability to play the first level over and over.

"For every video game system out there."

Virtual Boy and Game.com ports CONFIRMED!

  • YEAH! 'bout bloody time. I'll get my cape out :)

  • There's a masturbation joke in there somewhere, but I'm too exhausted to uncover it. This game's looking awesome, but the storyline is still something I'm not looking forward to. Maybe playing as the dark Lord of the Sith will help ease my fanboy rage, but there will still be rage.

  • I hate how the lightsaber just sort of "hits" the Wookies. Should be lopping arms off.

  • *Head Explodes*

    X_X

  • It's WOOKIEES, Di'kutla chakaar!

Apprentice who? I can't wait for this game. This will be my first star wars game. I want to get the lego saga but don't know. Any advice with that people?

  • @TheEngineer: They couldn't procedurally flail if they lost their limbs. A side effect of the Euphoria engine.

  • @[KU]Shindokie: Wishes for a Star: If you can find a little kid to play with, pick up both of them for $40. It's worth it. Otherwise, you'll feel like an idiot for playing it alone.

  • That kinda gives the game away though.

I dont really care about playing as Vader as much as I want to scrunch up ATST's like an aluminum can.

  • There better be an unlockable Darth Vader mode so you can play through the entire game as him. That wouldn't be too hard to put in.

    @Polywhirl:
I had heard the reason for the lack of dismemberment was specifically because LucasArts is shooting for a T rating, and dismemberments, even bloodless ones, would bump it up into M territory. Sad.

The game looks pretty awesome though, I'll have to at least rent it, if not buy it.

  • Do want!
I'm still torn though, get the Wii version for gimmicky controls or the PC version for spiffy graphics....

  • @KreacherOfBloodandRank: Spoiling the first level? Game demos and reviews tend to do that anyway...

  • Despite never seeing any of the Star Wars films, (Yes I know, I'm probably the only person in the world that has never seen any of the series before) I'm really excited for this game.

Maybe, just maybe I'll watch Star Wars someday.... Or I could just remain the single and only person in the entire world of my kind.

    I'll think on that one...

    soooooo

i don't remember "darth vader's secret apprentice" from episodes iv-vi

does that mean he dies at the end of the game?

how ever will mainstream american videogaming kids react to this revelation???

or maybe by the end your dude will SEE THE LIGHT SIDE of the force and escape.

  • @[KU]Shindokie: Wishes for a Star: Yes, pick up Star Wars the complete saga. Very fun game. And you don't need a little kid to play the game with. If you like Star Wars and/or like Legos, you will enjoy the game.

It is amazing how well they tell the story with no actual dialogue. The context of all the scenes does an excellent job of conveying the story.

    @108:

also, i refuse to say "SOLD" until they confirm the BATTLE OF HOTH

    (joke)

  • Image of 108 108 at 10:47 PM on 04/07/08 *

    @108:

also i hope that on friday they reveal that by beating the game i'll be able to control a wookiee in the first level, and be strangled by darth vader

really, as is, the game is only fully appealing to sadists :-/

  • I just can't get excited about murdering Wookies. I just can't embrace my inner dark side like that.

p.s. I hope they get rid of some of those framerate hiccups.

  • @TheEngineer: They want to keep their "T" rating, is what I've heard. There should be a cheat code that unlocks dismemberment like in one of the Jedi Knight games on PC.

  • @Archaotic: Funny because every actual Star Wars movie is loaded to the brim with dismemberments and I believe they all range between "PG" and "PG13". Another case of video games getting the shaft from ridiculous idiots inside and outside the joke that is the ESRB.

  • Must brush up on my Darth Vader voice then. Only if I was taller I would buy a Vader costume to wear it while play for the ultimate experience.

  • @Bluecell: gaaah, I always hate games like that. It's infuriating. It's like climaxing first and then having to go through the foreplay. Or... uh.... so I've been told.

@108: I bet it'll turn out that you pull a big 'ol switcheroo and take Vader's place, effectively confirming that everything in IV-VI was a lie. That'll give Lucas an excuse to go and re-re-master the series, adding even more effects, 20.3 surround sound, and a few more racially stereotypical characters.

  • What kind of sick bastard would want to force choke a Wookiee?!

    Ewoks on the other hand...

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 10:52 PM on 04/07/08 *

    @dowingba:
Not to mention the Jedi Knight series had dismemberments aplenty with that cheat code. I'm sure it'll be either a code or an unlockable mode. You have to think they wouldn't be stupid enough to leave it out...would they?

  • POWER.......UNLIMITED POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

This game keeps looking more and more awesome. Too bad that when it comes out I'll be too entrenched in Spore to care.

  • this makes up for SW: ep 3 movie because i wanted to see more of Vader than ending movie like that. so its worth playing.

  • @Figroti: I actually find that interesting. I'd suggest never seeing it. Might break some records or something

The game appears to be pretty solid although a little over-the-top. I like the aspect of controlling Vader at the first level although it looked weird seeing him do those quick action moves, uncanny maybe? Probably because we never really saw him in action in the movies besides gently tap sabers with Obi-wan and Luke. I'd imagine him just walking around with his hands on his belt pwning everyone with his mind.

  • @Archaotic:
That's fine, but it shouldn't feel like an impact when the saber hits. It looks so different in the movies. The wielder doesn't feel any resistance, and it sounds like a real laser sword cutting through flesh. There's certainly no 1/10th second pause every time it makes contact with anything!

  • Also, magic strangle?

  • @J-Fro:
Arg...why did you have to remind me! I'd gone so long ignoring their existence, they always made me feel like George Lucas was too lazy to create a compelling character so he just picked up a teddy bear and put it on camera for laughs and ended up sticking with it.

Now I really hope this game has an Ewok genocide level.

  • Everything I've seen so far has made me want this more! I'm definitely going to get this on 360/PS3, but the 'historical' recreations on the PSP are so tempting... I might have to get that as well.

@TheEngineer, Polywhirl, Archaotic: I'd also love to see dismemberment amidst any lightsaber action. Hopefully there are some of those elements against droids - more than just crumbling upon impact.

@trigger2: Seeing as how it's currently slated for a September release date, there's bound to be performance improvement by then.

  • @The-Blur:
I'd rather he be too lazy than try hard and Jar-Jar. I mean fail. I use those two words interchangeably sometimes.

  • @ShaggE: I thought I was the only person who remembered Game.coms, never actually played one that didn't have that light up game that came with it though.

  • @108: Secret apprentice. Keyword secret... Its far fetched though. Even with Lucas's approval i think its a bit retarded that he would have a apprentice that was never ever mentioned until now.

  • If he's on Kashyyyk then this probably takes place during the novel "The Rise of Darth Vader" since that's the only time he is mentioned to be on Kashyyyk. I wonder how they'll pull off this off without contradicting the novel.

  • Ha, this is kind of funny. It's like the opposite of MGS2.

  • @Okari:
    2 Y's wasn't enough for them huh?

  • Image of jayntampa jayntampa at 11:10 PM on 04/07/08 *

"So, The Force Unleashed ... what does that name mean?"

Worst interview question ever ... I mean, come on. It's obvious this is just an ad for the game, so why try and fake the whole journalist interviewing the game designer thing. I don't mean to rant about it ... but, geez ...

The game, however, looks like a blast! I can't wait to try it out.

  • @Detre: Well, in the universe of Star Wars, the Emperor had a secret left hand that one never knew about (Mara Jade) until all the books came forward. While not the same, it's not all that retarded of a concept for the video game.

As it is, I've really been looking forward to this game. It's been a while since Star Wars has given me something to get excited about like I am for this.

But....I don't know if I have the heart to take out a Wookiee. Chewie created a great big fuzzy spot in my heart for the big guys.

  • Been looking forward to this game for a very long time...and they just keep coming with awesome content. Vader as a character running a muck in Kasheek? WOW I'm so excited!

  • Image of 108 108 at 11:24 PM on 04/07/08 *

@MisterSleep: Oh man! That'd be awesome!

You know what would be even more awesome, though -- and this is me being dead serious -- is if, in that duel at the end of the first stage, Vader vs. Secret Apprentice, suddenly and sharply the action snaps, and WHOA!! Now you're controlling the Kid, and not Vader!

Hit Vader a couple times, and then he does a final Force Push / Choke, and cue cut scene with Vader asking you to join the Dark Side.

    Man!

Someone should pay me to design videogames!

  • @DeRangedKaos: Yeah, I find the thought of choking them kind of disturbing. Still, the fans seem to approve.

  • @The-Blur: Then your choice is already made. No PC version

  • I have a Vader helmet somewhere, I think it's time to get that puppy out!

  • @Spoit:
Really??? Thats very disappointing. Oh well, it looks like I'll be wagging my wiimote around in crudy graphics then.
    Thanks for the heads up.

  • Heh, they talk about George Lucas being involved like it's a god thing.

  • "Every video game system out there"?! I wanna see some Nes screens!
